[Q] Is there any way of creating a Wifi HotSpot from the GALAXY TAB 2 WIFI version?

I have just got a Galaxy Tab 2... been playing with it for a few hours now and I have to say I am impressed!!
One thing I would like to be able to do is create a Wifi Hotspot so that I can connect some mobile phones to it to play games with my mates. I cannot seem to find any option to setup the Portable Hotspot though in the settings menus?
I don't need an active data connection, just the ability to effectively use the Tab 2 as a router so it creates a wireless network. Is this possible in any way?

I forgot to mention that my tab is the 3100 (3G version....)

I have the GT-P3110 version... this may be why then. Your model number shows as the 3G version.
I get the same screen layout as 'klausdieter79' above
So does this mean it cannot be done?

You are asking how to turn the WIFI only version of the tab into a hotspot so other devices can connect to the WIFI as well?
Am I missing the obvious here?

I think that it should not be so difficult for samsung to provide this option to the wifi version.....pitty!!

I dont think this is possible. Wifi tethering serves to share a internet connection. I get what you want to do - you want to create a network so that people can play over a network. But i think they did not include this feature on the wifi version of the TAB 2, since it would not make sense sharing internet through wifi if your device ony has wifi.

Imagine you are in a hotel and you have to pay for the wlan key for ANY device you want to use and you doesn't have a device with root priveleges so can't see the key in /data/misc/wifi. I'm in such a hotel right now!

Please be polite,if you want help in this forum,or keep your mouth shut.For me it's a non-sense to use a wifi device to be a hotspot to another wifi device,but if you are so cheap and can't afford to spend a few bucks on a hotel wifi services,maybe you can build yourself a rom for your device,to enable that functionality you need it.Cheers!

Do you think 50€ for one week is a good price to use wlan in a hotel? I don't think so. That's why it is no non-sense to me.

Why don't you just get one of your friends to create a hotspot and connect to their network?

In a word: no.
You need two radios to bridge and create a hotspot. This is why you can bridge a GSM or CDMA radio to WLan.
Commercial WLan bridges use two separate radio chips to accomplish what you want to do.
I carry both a small DLink portable router/WiFi that allows me to share a wired connection to a bunch of wireless devices and I have a small cheapo netbook that has an extra USB WiFi connection so I can create a WLan bridge.
Or, you can buy and carry a commercial or consumer WiFi bridge that can accomplish the same thing.
So, for the time being, either suck it up and pay the cost or bring the proper equipment. Sorry for being crass, but the tablet can't do it if it's a WiFi only unit.

You haven't understood the original question mate. I want to use the Galaxy Tab 2 as a router.
I didn't mention anything about having a data connection to share... I just want it to act as a central hub to connect other devices to so that gaming can be done across that 'network' NO DATA NEEDED!!

I can create a WLAN bridge with my home router that only has one radio in it (as far as I know anyway). You don't need two radios, but you need drivers that are setup to do what they want, and I doubt you'll find many consumer devices meant to act as a router. Maybe you could setup an adhoc network, but turning the tablet into a true router won't work without a lot of hacking.

There are other reasons to want to use the Tab 2 as a Wifi hotspot:
I want to use the Tab 2 as a touch controller for the Ableton Live DAW. The Android controller app that I want to use requires the tablet to be a hot spot.
Is there a way to setup the Tab 2 as an adhoc network?

I know this is an old thread but I do have a solution..
I use this app called " software data cable "
It creates a wifi hotspot to connect between devices.. Even on a wifi only galaxy tab 2
Here's is how you do it
Install the app "software data cable"
Click on" sync phone" tab
Click on "connect with friends" button
On the pop up - select " create direct push network "
You'll get a message "tethering / wifi hotspot active "
I believe this will solve all your problems.

[Q] Wifi Issues

I've had this amazing tablet for 2 weeks now but sadly I seem to have an infuriating Wi Fi issue.
It connects fine
The reception is excellent
When I download large files (ie the data for a game), the network just drops out and reconnects. When I'm not downloading anything sizeable, it's fine.
Any ideas?

Is "Power Saving" on? If so, turn it off. Other than that, maybe it's your router? I haven't had the same issue with my Note 10.1, either at home or on the road.

Try changing the channel on your router. Usually 1 and 6 are the best.

Thanks for both of your replies.
So - it continues - I've tried all the channels on my router now (BT Home Hub 3) and it still disconnects when downloading large files only. Power saving is off also!
I phoned Samsung - they didn't know and said that it was mostly likely a rare faulty unit. So - I've taken it back to the shop and I've just been given a brand new one.
Guess what. SAME THING! Grrr. So it can't be the device, it must just be a weird incompatibility with my router? Any other ideas or know of any apps that might help me resolve this?
The only other thing is to wait for the JB upgrade and hope that fixes it :/

Right further developments - when I connect to a hotspot like starbucks (where the connection speed is limited), I can download HUGE files and it never disconnects.
So therefore either the Note 10.1 doesn't like an 85mb connection or it's the only device in my house that hates my router....
Annoying though! Still would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

Get a different router...sorry, someone had to say it.

Useful.
I've actually slowed the router down from wifi b/g/n to just b/g and now the tablet works perfectly fine.
So obviously there's an issue with the wireless-n on the note because all my other devices work fine at this rate.
I hope JB will fix that.

I have no issues with the Wi-Fi on this tablet, I'm quite pleased with the dual band.

Since you are the only one to have this problem it's obviously not an issue with the note.

Yeah, sounds like something with the N implementation of your router not getting along with the Note. I have a Netgear N300 router I bought in the spring, and the Note has no problems running on it in N. I get blazing fast speeds, and haven't had problems with file transfers of any size (I've moved a few 1.5GB movies over the network to it).
Is your current router an older model? Many of them were labelled "draft-N", and the implementation may not be totally correct for N devices. Also, try updating your router firmware if possible, and if that doesn't work give one of the alternative router firmwares (Tomato or DD-WRT for example) a try.

Thanks - well this is the funny thing. When N is on, it connects perfectly and until it 'conks out' it downloads at an incredible speed. Then reconnects!
The router is a British Telecom special and sadly I'm kind of locked to it as it's not a standard ADSL model, rather a fibre optic one and they don't come easily in the UK (afaik). It's not draft-N either...it's just a final implementation of N!
The wireless has a 40Mhz option with N but that seemed to do the same. It's only when I knock N out it's alright.

Exact Same Issue
I have the exact same issue. Only drops out at N speeds with large file transfer. Starts off fine, getting great speeds of almost 4 mb / s, but then just stops.
If I switch n file transfer off, it works fine, but at much slower speeds around 1 mb / s
I am using a zoom 5350 cable modem / router - the firmware is updated by the cable supplier which is Comcast.
Anyone have any ideas here? I also returned my first note to as I thought this was a hardware flaw, but new one I got yesterday does the same.

Update - shockingly, unplugging the cable modem / router and powering it back up now has transfers working at full n speed with no dropouts. Software glitch with the cable companies firmware update perhaps that reset??
Anyway, after having a good 25 attempts drop out before this, every attempt has worked fine since power on/off of modem/router.

No way! That's bizarre!! Good to know it's not just me.....I will try a full reset of my modem/router and see what happens.
If this fixes it, I will kiss your face.

Not finding 5ghz Wifi Signal

Is anyone else having issues with their Nexus 5 not finding their 5ghz Wifi network?
My N7 does have some issues however if I toggle the airplane mode on it, it will find and connect the 5ghz network.
However, on the N5 toggling airplane mode, restarting the phone, nothing seems to find it.
The network is not hidden, though did try just entering the WiFi information to the phone to give it a try and it still didn't find or connect.
I downloaded Wifi analyzer and it won't find the network either.

My N5 wouldn't detect my wifi signal at home. I changed the wifi channel on the router from 13 to 11, then the phone could see it fine.
After doing this, I recall having exactly the same problem last year with the N4 (before I sent it back).
I use channel 13 normally because there's less interference from surrounding wifi routers in my street, but for some reason Nexus phones don't like it :-/

Using channel 13 is a big no, no as it will cause interference in 2,483.5–2,500 MHz which is highly restricted by the FCC.
Also, using channel 13 does not negate co-channel interference from channels 9, 10, 11, 12, either.
The only channels you should ever use for 802.11 2.4GHz band should be 1, 6, 11 - In other markets, channel 14.
I'd recommend the app called wifi analyzer and find the channel that has the highest dBm rating out of 1, 6 and 11 and use it.

I know you said it is not hidden but - sometimes the SOHO devices will seperate the SSID's 802.11N between the 2.4 and 5 band in the settings so I'd say double check them. Also, the wifi analzyer will not pick up a network unless it is sending SSID beacons.

The 20 and 40mhz is the bandwidth you'll use - the 20 will be the slower one as you have less RF to pass data over.

You're not alone. Mine doesn't see my 5GHz network either, just my 2.4GHz. I've restarted router, restarted phone, no avail. I have my channels set to automatic.

Same here. The phone initially saw the 5GHz WiFi upon the first start up, but after the initial update, it cant see it anymore.
EDIT: So I loaded WiFi Analyzer and went into settings. I noticed that the some "available" 5 GHz channels were selected: 36, 40, 44, and 48. I set my router to channel 44 (5220 MHz), lower channel extension, dynamic channel width, N/A mixed and the phone can see it again. However, there is only one bar (it's always low on this router anyway).

I only get 1 or 2 bars on 5ghz vs 4 on 2.4ghz

As of now, it looks like it won't connect to UNII-2 5GHz channels (channels 52-140), which require the use of DFS. Can anyone see if they can use UNII-3 Channels? 149-165?
Is ANYONE having success connecting to any channels 52-165??? I'm curious if this is a SW or HW related issue.

For what it's worth, I set my TPLINK TL-WDR3600 v1 w/ DD-WRT 5GHz radio to Channel 149 (5745 MHz), N/A Mixed, Dynamic width, upper extension channel and I was *successful* seeing and connecting to the AP.

So, my next thing to find out.
Does a client (The broadcom) chip have the ability to see if DFS is used or not used? If so, the device may not allow you to use it since those channels on UNII-2 are supposed to be limited to only using those channels if it is used.
This may be what is to come due to the FCC coming down on 802.11AC and mimo as of late.
I guess the next question is. Does anyone have DFS on their 5Ghz capable home router device? If you turn it on, I believe you may be able to use those channels. (Theory)

Again for what it's worth, I enabled "radar detection" in the advanced settings of the 5GHz radio in dd-wrt for my router and set the frequency to auto. It settled on channel 36 and I did connect.
I don't know if the router is DFS enabled and if dd-wrt properly enabled it. Is there a way of prompting the radar detection to force a channel change?

I read up on the settings - Enable radar and auto channel for DD WRT - Now is there a way to force it to change? If you had another device capable of broadcasting on 5Ghz, I imagine it may be possible.

<grin> I thought of that. I have another 5GHz access point and tried to bump out the DFS(?) router. I set the same frequency on the interfering AP and then re-applied the first radio's settings. The first AP settled on a different frequency. I tried bumping it again, and it *appears* as if it settled back to the original frequency. However, I can reapply the settings without changes and I don't always return to the same frequency. Also, my Nexus 5 can't find it when it's on 36 (where it settled) so I'm back on 149 fixed for now.
Update - Turns out that my second AP auto-selected 36 which explained why it masked the first AP's signal. Now they are both happily separate (36 and 149).
Hope this helps, but it's not terribly scientific.

I decided to keep playing around with the settings and apparently putting the WiFi on channel 161 seems to have done the trick.

So I got my setup working. I've got two routers and offset them with channels 161 and 165. I'll have to see how this shakes out over the next week to see if I'm dropping connections on any of the devices...

Hey guys,
by all accounts it appears as a new SW restriction as of Lollipop official release, since my n5 could connect to any channel in 5GHz band (EU regulatory domain, so only channels 36,40,44,48,52,56,60,64,100,104,108,112,120,128,132,136,140) on every 4.4.x release and on first 5.0 dev preview (i didn't try installing any other builds). 20mhz/40mhz/80mhz wide, does not matter, all were working just fine (nexus5 is 40mhz capable though). Right after flashing release version of 5.0 posted on google images I am not seeing any DFS channels anymore, so only 36,40,44,48 are there, since I'm in Europe. But that explains why some of you see 149-165 channels in US for example, since they do not require DFS scanning. Enabling DFS scanning for testing purposes on those lower channels (36-48 for ex) makes no sense, since there are no military or weather radars in this space and regulatory bodies do not require it anyway.
This is a pretty bad move from the google side, since while home users don't really care about switching their home routers back to non-DFS channels, in the enterprise world those phones are going to use 2.4Ghz primarily, since nobody is going to adjust the network when someone decides to block a spectrum on some clients. Now considering the fact that 802.11ac is 5GHz only, why would you buy a phone 802.11ac capable that doesn't support most of the 5GHz spectrum?
Hope to see the change in the upcoming update if any.

Nexus 5 won't work with my WiFi network

Nexus won't connect to my WiFi network , I was using my nexus 5 without issues but today we upgraded the internet speed , and to be able to do it ,we had to get a new modem (besides the new data plan ) , the thing is now I can't get internet on my phone while connected to the WiFi , it connects but I can't do do anything , when I open the browser I get this message :

I can use WiFi with my laptop , and I tried everything I could ,I reset the modem , made a new network with new password etc , I changed the configuration of the router so that the network won't have WPS , I set the DNS values to the "Google ones " 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 , I don't know what do to do anymore :'(

That was also an issue ,if I connect the modem to the router where it should go ( and were it was before we upgraded the modem) , the hole says "internet " then I don't get internet , only when I put it in a "normal LAN hole"is that I get internet :/

Check Modem or Router settings for MAC filtering.

It's got to go in the int port or you won't have a dhcp server and only 1 device well be able to connect.
Wire it up correctly then turn both the modem and router off for a minute, then turn back on the modem and wait a couple of minutes or until the lights confirm it's connected, then turn on your router and wait a minute, then try connecting to it.

OK I put the modem cable in the "internet port " on the router , now I get no internet at all :/
Another question , should I put my second cable ( the one that goes to my roomate's laptop ) on the router or on the modem ?

if your modem has LAN ports then it's likely an all in one router/modem.. for basic setup just use that one
it gets complicated after that as how to set two up as you only want one to be serving ideally, and the 2nd as a wireless access point or client repeater..

Disable MAC filtering if you have it enabled or add your Nexus 5 and other wireless devices MAC address to allowed section.

What?
Ok first shut down the modem and the router. Plug in the cable from the modem into the "internet" port on the router. Turn on everything and you should be all good.
Your roomtates laptop should be plugged into one of the LAN (the other 4 ports) on the router.

Go to your Nexus 5 Settings, look under WiFi for your router - are the settings correct & matched to those of your (new) router? What are they? Do you have another smartphone or tablet or wireless PC - connecting & working with this new router?
You might want to power down your router/modem, wait 5 or 10 minutes - then reboot it & wait for it to resync (DHCP or static IP) with all the network devices, including the N5? Make sure you have the SSID and security key or password saved or copied down first in case you have to restore them, including DNS settings.
Seeing that your location is Berlin - check to make sure your WiFi band(s) are set correctly on this new router.
Can you disable temporary your wireless security & connect openly with the N5?
Most modem/router can be reset to its factory default settings - read your manual & do it as a kind of last resort ... copy & save your current settings. Do these troubleshooting steps-by-steps & don't overlook the obvious - google/download/install/run "inSSIDer 3" by MetaGeek on a laptop or desktop with wireless access, it's a very user-friendly & useful diagnostic tool to analyze and troubleshoot network signals, etc.

Hey , no need to be sorry , you guys are bringing me in the right direction ... Sooo I checked my old modem and yeah it has a USB port, 2 telephone ports and a port named "Ethernet" whereas my new modem has just 2 telephone ports and 5 "LAN ports " , our internet company just gives a modem and if we want to have WiFi then we need to pay 2 euros more , my roommate had always used a modem +router combo but it looks like that won't work with this modem anymore , maybe the company got this new modem to make the set up process easier for people and of course to prevent people like us from getting WiFi with our own methods :/

So you, like you said, I have to use the new modem I got , I can't plug in a router, now checking my Provider's website I realise that there's two different devices, the one I have Hitron cve-30360 ( I assume is a model specifically built for my provider - Kabel Deutschland- is a "Cable-router and WLAN-Router" and there's another (more expensive) device homebox fritz box 6360, which is a "Modem, WLAN-Router, Server and Telephone System" so what's basically the difference between this two devices? To be honest I thought the device I had was a modem and it turns out it's a "Cable-router"

I had a read up, unfortunately most info is in German for me, but the info on the main site is indeed confusing
it does appear to be an all in one cable modem wifi router, check the features page, euro docsys3.0 compliant.. also the picture of the back shows a cable connector, so it has to be.
You should be able to connect everything to that wirelessly and wired.. you should of been supplied an ssid and password
edit, unless your cable company turned off the wireless and locked you out of the settings on the new device.. in that case connect the second router via the LAN and turn off the dhcp server in its settings.. edit...or set wireless access point, if it has it

[Q] Wifi Disconnects when bluetooth device is connected

I have had my note pro wifi model connected to both a 2.4g & 5g dual band wifi router and while using the tablet I have a strong consistent connection. I recently bought the samsung mouse & keyboard. I have noticed that anytime I connect either device to my tablet via bluetooth, within about 30 seconds my wifi connection drops everytime. I have had my phone, along with my note 8 connected to the same wifi to confirm that my router is working fine. I am using a stock (non-rooted) note pro, updated to the most recent 4.4.2 that samsung has made available. As soon I turn off my bluetooth connected devices, my wifi signal doesn't drop connection and works perfect. Has anyone else had any issues and know of anything that could be done to fix the problem I am having? Thanks

I've noticed my WiFi dropping and then reconnecting (at least getting those pop-ups at the bottom of the screen alerting you to the WiFi cycling) for some time and I've always used the Logitech Pro bluetooth keyboard.
I hadn't considered that it might be related to this as it's always been in the mix. I'll try it without it for a bit to see if WiFi just stays on.

I just received the Samsung Keyboard yesterday, and immediately noticed my wifi dropping off. Weird, and a total bummer. Up until this issue, I have been completely in love with this device, not finding any shortcomings from what I expected. Hopefully an update fixes this.

I'd be curious to know the specifics of the devices and networks to see if there's a correlation. Things like exact model of the note pro, kernel version and build number in addition to make and model of wifi router/ap and type of encryption used. It's more likely an issue on the tablet side than the type of network but still possibly helpful. The thing is, with no development activity for these tablets here its doubtful anyone can fix the issue. Perhaps by drawing some correlations though better info could be given to Samsung.
I don't frequently use a BT keyboard but on my SM-P900 (kernel version 3.4.39-1182544, build KOT49H.P900UEU1ANC5) I'm getting stable wifi on both 2.4Ghz band and 5Ghz band while using my Logitech BT Keyboard. Network is an ASUS R6300 router using WPA2 encryption.

I have the Att Note Pro 12.2" SM907-A with Samsungs S Mouse ET-MP900D and Logitech Pro Keyboard. Since I have an AT&T version it allows me to turn off WIFI and use LTE to eliminate issues. I went to an AT&T store and should the onsite staff the issue. They were amazed and did tell me I wasnt crazy. My WIFI issues happen every where. I travel for work so its alot of hotels, AT&T wifi spots and also a work location. No Matter the WIFI with Bluetooth it cuts in an out.
My next step was to reset the Note Pro and add the bluetoth items back in.

I can happily say my P905 does not have this issue.
I'm using the Logitech K810. Spend last night typing about 80 pages worth of text on it whilst playing the Emmy awards livestream over WiFi, it didn't drop once.
Tested it again just now, 5 minutes, 4 pages and TuneIn, no drop. Speedtest does this:

It does appear to be capped at 65Mbps, instead of the 120Mbps my laptop gets. But I've always seen Android devices do that.

Mine only seems to drop wifi when I take the tablet off the bluetooth keyboard, walk to another room and use the tablet without the keyboard. If I leave the tablet sitting on the Samsung keyboard and use the bluetooth S-Mouse as well, my wifi seems fine. I used the tablet with the keyboard and mouse last night for about an hour, no issues with wifi. This morning I took the tablet off the keyboard to read the news while drinking my coffee at the kitchen counter, wifi was dropping in and out non-stop. Turned bluetooth off, the issue goes away. Weird and frustrating.

I need to use wifi with bluetooth as i only have a 2 gig plan. why would a top of the line tablet have a lame issue like this? I constantley bork up important password entries that lock me out after 3 attempts. Not a professional level tablet with this problem by all means. I notice the bluetooth keyboard and mouse disconnecting constantley, as well as the wifi. Very pissed as I just spent about a grand on this crap setup. Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2... lol need to bust out my windows 8.1 tablet so everything works i guess.

This is beginning to annoy me quite a bit now as well. There needs to be an update for this but it appears no such hardware update is forthcoming. Our only hope may be Lollipop.

Will we be getting a lollipop on this eventually?

Apparently this is an Android issue that has been around since 4.2 on the Nexus 4. It also seems to happen on CM and other customROMS. Since it wasn't fixed in 4.3 nor 4.4, I have little hope 5 will fix the problem.
I still don't have the issue though, I'm currently typing this on my K810 whilst playing music through TuneIn over my JBL Charge 2... No disconnects, no drops.

I suspect there will be SOME means of getting it even if it's unofficial. I sure as heck will be looking to that path. As is, I love and hate the tablet now over this. I cannot believe Samsung has no answer for it.

I just spent an hour on the phone with Samsung going over this and got connected to their Advanced Support team who, after trying to resolve it, will now be looking into this more deeply. They say they'll call me back. Their initial thought is that it's the router. It isn't because I've had the problem on every router I've ever connected with and with every bluetooth device.
However, since we now have someone looking at this it might help to a) call them as well to add to the weight and b) list here the routers and devices we've tried.
I my case:
Samsung BT keyboard
Logitech BT keyboard (both for this device)
Plantronics BT headset
Sixaxis controller.
Router:
Asus Blackbird RT-AC66U.

Try connecting a Bluetooth mouse at the same time with the Bluetooth keyboard..then it should happen..

I use the Wi-Fi tether on my rooted beans 4.3 galaxy s3. Haven't really tried it on another WiFi connection.. I'll try tonight over at my moms. I don't think its a router problem..but who knows. What's the number you called to report? I will give the a call to because this is ridiculous.. The tablet seems to be faster off WiFi to..all around snappier.

I don't have one, sadly. I use my Logitech M705 with nano receiver over USB OTG.
I already have both a bluetooth keyboard and a bluetooth speaker connected, so in theory if multiple bluetooth devices caused this, I should already be experiencing the issue.
As it said in the Google Support thread as well, there is no clear indication as to why some devices are affected and others are not.

Well..mine works fine like that to..I believe its a tablet issue. Bluetooth Mouse keyboard combination..

I use the 810 keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. It drops Wi-Fi whenever I have both connected.

I guess to be clear, when using WiFi, a bluetooth mouse, and a bluetooth keyboard, I get WiFi drops, and bluetooth disconnects, not just wifi. Very frustrating. When I turn off WiFi, bluetooth mouse and keyboard work rock solid. The way I can tell, is the mouse will lag, and the keyboard will ghost type, making for a dangerous situation on password protected sites that have limits on sign in attempts. Almost got locked out of my State mainframe site.. not cool.

It doesn't drop when I just have just the keyboard connected. I'll test some with just the mouse.
