I miss a built-in streaming functionality, firefox streaming is choppy and the other option requires another app? If you were to build that functionality into the app it would be very useful to me.
Also the design etc looks good, simple and functional.
Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, I used the feature of YouTube playing in the background on a daily basis.
On Android I start playing a news clip or song then tab out to my web browser or stop watch, or any other app, and the media goes off.
How do I keep YouTube playing the background ?
The only way on YouTube app is by having YouTube Red subscription. It's a feature for red on Android. Others could point something out but from what I've checked and seen when using YouTube is by YouTube Red.

Not sure that its possible without root and xposed. Xposed hasn't been updated to work with Nougat yet though and that could still be some time away unfortunately. Might just have to live with it as is for the time being.
Thanks for the replies. I recall on previous Android phones that are rooted I used that Xposed module. But Xposed isn't compatible with Android N and the S8+ is locked down no root anyways for me.
Dang, that's unfortunate. YouTube Red might be your best bet then. Depends on how much you want it and whether you're willing to pay a monthly subscription to get it I suppose.
Sometimes I use the multi window feature to watch YouTube videos while using another app. It is a bit of a pain though if you just want audio as the minimum window size is still 1/3 of the screen.
I've tried a few apps that claim to play YouTube videos in the background but none of them worked very well.
There a app call OG YouTube somewhere in xda that have playback.
Try swapping top corning down to make the screen smaller. You can still hear and see the video and also move the smaller screen anywhere you want.
Use Firefox browser. It let's you play YouTube in background or screen off

Can you explain how it works on iOS? It seems crazy to me that YouTube requires you to pay a monthly subscription fee for background play on Android, but offers it for free on iOS.
If you mean playing within a web browser, and then going to another tab of the browser, I think Firefox for Android allows you to do that. If, instead, you mean the YouTube app itself, then you need YouTube red or some other (probably unsanctioned) method.

On my iPhone 7 Plus, I was using some program called 'ProTube' on stock iOS, not jailbreak or anything;
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/protube-for-youtube/id931201696?mt=8
I could start a video, and then move to do something else, and it would remain playing in the background until I manually closed it down. I get so used to it, and really liked it, now it's a shock not to have something like it on Android.

Yep you have to download the APK. They stopped support so the latest APK would be the last one you can use.
So you have to search XDA as the website took down the download links for OGYoutube.
The app still works without problems and should be a while until YouTube updates something to make it obsolete.
The lat update is OGYoutube 3.5.
Only thing is that you won't have the crop to fit. If in case you used it.

I couldn't get it to work at first either. Try going to options in Firefox and check "Request desktop site". After doing that I was able to return to the home screen with the audio still playing in the background. It seems to work with the screen off as well! :good:
Go to Youtube app, play video then turn off screen with the power button (just a click). Video will pause. Click on power button again and youll see time on top. Swipe the time left or right and youll see the youtube play button . Click play and it should work. It will not work any other way if you want to text or call or be on your phone but it will if you want to hear music and conserve battery. This is on my S8+ .....PS make sure your Pandora or any other music app is off.

You can't do this on snapdragon versions, which is what op has.
You have to choose desktop mode in the Firefox browser. I know how you feel I switched from iPhone as well
og youtube works like a charm
Last week I owned a pixel XL and I got pip to work with Google maps...
But my new pixel2 does not pip.?. I just get Google assistant asking me "how can i help?"
I tried using maps, Netflix, YouTube ,Google movies (even tried chrome streaming YouTube, because I live in the UK) all failed!?
Each app settings say pip is enabled
I've also enabled settings->Apps & notification -> special app access
What am I missing?
Any idea why?
I am not sure why this would happen exactly, but I wanted to let you know that picture-in-picture works correctly for Google Maps on my Pixel 2 - I am running Android 8.1 Developer Preview 1. What OS version are you running on your phone?
Its not working for me as well i even tryed uninstalling youtube and clearing cache
My version is the normal oreo 8.0 ! Has anyone got chrome or google-movies to work?
Has anyone been able to get PIP to work on this device? According to Sony (https://support.sonymobile.com/sg/xperiaxa2ultra/kb/8019307455ff6184015e92f63324005926/#gref) it should work out of box but it doesn't. At least not on mine.

It only works on apps like youtube or if you video call someone, you can use chrome while maintaining the video call. Same with youtube, you can watch a video while doing something else.
From my understanding, this feature is specific to Android Oreo 8.0 and higher, which means it should work on any device that has Android 8.0+

I wonder if you have tried it yourself because, as I said in the original post, it does not work. For example when I play a video in chrome and make it full screen and then hit the home button (these are Sony's instructions) the picture in picture doesn't happen. In case of YouTube it isn't supposed to happen anyway because it requires a premium subscription.

Yes I have tried it. It's especially useful during video calls, but it also works with youtube Vanced (which is basically hacked youtube.
It does indeed work I use it almost everyday in fact.
Also, if you have GPS navigation going, it'll keep a small window open while you do other things

Do you have Google apps installed? Just install in playstore the Google play app, that's enough.

You need this app
I am able to install it in play store but I cannot add a google account. Looks like I need to redo the GMS Method again.
