looking for insight regarding currently available ROM's that would offer the closest thing to CM9 (from what I’ve read CM9 is only available on Tegra3 handsets)? Looking for a 'stock android experience' or AOSP based build... your suggestions are much appreciated.
currently unlocked, running 1.85FW, with CWT recovery...

The closest thing available right now would probably be CleanROM Dev edition 2.0. Check it out in the development section.
CleanROM DE 2 is what I'm running and it's great. It's pretty clean.

The change log listed for CleanRom v2.2. does not give any indication that carrierIQ has been removed (which is another huge disappointment for this ROM)

Clean ROM DE is different from what you are running. Check the dev section. As for an AOSP ROM...who knows. There are a lot of factors involved.

If I understand correctly, you'll have to wait until we get S-Off so we can flash boot.img. Once that's achieved, it will be possible to flash full ROM's. But there are still a lot of things that need to be figured out, like getting the camera working, Wifi, GPS, data, etc.
Maybe the Cyanogenmod developers will get lucky and it'll work out of the box.

That's not correct. We can flash boot images just fine through fastboot now. Just need s-off to flash kernels through recovery. Once HTC releases the source for our phone more ROMs will follow, including AOSP ROMs I'm sure. Source is needed to help create custom kernels.
I've never understood that rationale, buy an HTC phone that you know will be packed with sense etc then go back in time to bare bones android. Why not save your money and buy something like a Samsung, Motorola, LG, etc. With a barebones android os? Lol my rant

Because the only device running stock Android 4.0 is the Galaxy Nexus. I've gone through several of them and they all had the same purple tint, weird crosshatch pattern visible on white images, distortion/noise at low brightness, and other issues related to the Pentile SAMOLED display. Besides that, I can't think of any other device that runs stock Android.
I especially can't think of any Android phones that look as nice as the One X. I like its unibody construction, machined earpiece grill, soft-touch case (the black one anyway, not sure if the white is glossy), the way the glass is slightly above the case like old iPod Nano, and the display itself is really good.
Before Ice Cream Sandiwch, we had maybe the Motorola Droid, the Nexus One, and then the Nexus S. I hate physical keyboards, the Droid was out. Currently, there aren't many choices if you want a vanilla Android device. Actually... there's only one, and the display is a disappointment to me.
In my opinion, the best Android phone available right now is the One X. Knowing that developers are always making custom ROM's for the majority of Android devices, I know that I don't need to let the software dictate my purchasing decision.

You realize those manufacturers slap their own crap on top of stock android too, right? Samsung - TouchWiz, Moto - Blur, LG - Whatever the heck they do. Unless you're buying a Nexus device then you're getting a manufacturer skin.
Personally, I buy for the hardware. Though, the stock software has to be tolerable enough to last me until custom roms start coming out.

so without nand access the One X isn't going to see any AOSP builds? I’m not sure I entirely understand how nand is that important... I mean if you can boot a your own ROM, who cares.
Does HTC typically release the source for their phones as ‘pside15’ indicated that is an important factor in creating ROMs?
Seems like the Cyanogenmod team already has AOSP build for the Tegra handset. HTC One X (with Tegra) source isn’t released…

I LOVE the htc one x for the hardware and its physical appeal, but i also cant wait for some stock android ROMs. The aroma one thats out gets pretty darn close, but its no CM9. Im hoping that in the next two weeks with our new freedom with the unlocked bootloader etc etc.. that we will get more than 2 roms... thats ALL I see currently in the dev section. I shouldnt complain though because obviously I'm no dev.
I feel like the AT&T version was a waste of my money though :/ it just doesnt have enough attention. The only reason I have it instead of the tegra 3 is because of the battery and lte. Otherwise there is literally no other reason I should keep this phone. Does anyone know if the battery life has been improved at all for the international version?

I'm working on one myself....but because I do not want to release trash and because I have been limited on time over the last week or two...I have not released yet. Sit tight and chill out. Phone hasnt even been out for a month yet...

Hi everyone, because HTC is turning into one big liar, promising updates and canceling them in the last weeks i started wondering if the devs of this community could port sense roms to other devices like galaxy nexus or samsung galaxy s2-3. That would be a big blow for htc because a lot of sense loving people would switch to other devices. i am not dev, i wish i was but if this sense porting is possible please please do it.

Won't do a thing to HTC, we "power-users" as called by outsiders are only a very small group of android users. Most people don't even know what root-access means so yea, this won't do a lot with these normal users.

These companies go in millions and like 70000 don't really matter and most HTC users do not only use a HTC phone for the ui or official updates.

From the official sources, no clue. From ROM devs, I'd say give it a month once source code drops. Cyanogenmod already built for this device, I mean look at the back of the phone, so I'm sure they will support us for at least 2 more android versions. My very first android phone the Droid Incredible came out in 2010 and for rom support from devs all the way up to 4.4.4, so I'd say pretty dang high from rom devs. Helps also that we have a simple bootloader unlock, which makes devs even more inclined to work on the device. Based on my past device experience, we'll get at least 3 more major versions, 6.0 included, maybe more. By then, your battery will be useless, and you'll have moved on, which is awesome.

CM are only obligated to support this device until April next year, so Marshmallow will be the last official version we get. They're contracted for 24 months from the time of release and they'll drop this device like a hot potato the first chance they get.

While I'd like to agree with you, that's in regards to business, we will see 6.0 for that reason alone. I was more referring to the fact that we still see updates on the nexus 4 up to 5.1 and the fact that open popular devices seem to get much longer support. Wasn't trying to disagree with you at all in that respect. I'm not that likes to hang onto their old devices, or sell them to friends, so I have seen how amazing that support can be even for older devices. My TF101 tablet is still rocking, and running 5.1.1 it's smoother than it's ever been. Don't think that'll see 6.0, but I didn't expect it to make it to 5.0. It all comes down to "We'll see how long it gets supported, but don't demand anything past 6.0" even though historically, we should get 3 more major versions if it follows most devices paths when it comes to rom support. That boing said, I'll be flashing 6.0 as soon as we get a rom that can multiboot!

There's no doubt we'll see the next version after Marshmallow on this phone, but I can guarantee you it won't be in the form of official updates via Cyanogen Inc, it'll be in the form of community developed ROMs via CyanogenMod. If you meant CyanogenMod and not Cyanogen Inc then I misunderstood you.

Sounds good to me! We have great devs here! Hopefully they don't leave for the Nexus phones, they really aren't worth the $ in my opinion. 808 and 810 have too many problems. I got the Moto X Pure and had that for 2 weeks and even the 808 had terrible heating issues. This years chipsets by Qualcomm are just terrible. Not to mention even now, 3 weeks in they have no dev support and Motorola (now Lenovo) is very shady company.

Motorola says they aren't going to update the Moto E although they advertised that they would. Also not updating Moto X 2014 AT&T and Verizon version.

Moto E: cheap budget phone that I think people only bought as a placeholder when they broke a phone or something else happened, it's not a flagship. nobody bought it to use for 2+ years and I don't think it was intended as such.
Moto x: did you see that the pure is getting updated? That means it was the carriers decision, not Motorola's. Also, it's easy to convert the att/Verizon version to the pure version and then you'll get the update fine.

As soon as Lenovo brought out Pure they let go about 500 Motorola employees, many who were in the dev department... They are giving people hard times about returns saying it will take 6-8 weeks to get their money back on an overnight return label. The pure QC is piss poor, if you go to their forums, their most popular thread is about returning the phone... This clearly isn't the same Motorola we used to love. I'm not big on OnePlus either, I only came back here, because at least I know my OnePlus works, I'll never buy from them again though, that's for sure.

Coming from the Nexus 5x and there are many Oreo roms..so i was wondering why there ist noch Oreo Rom for the Pixel..? And dont get me wrong..i have no problem with that..Just wonderering

Root is no problem, fastboot boot to TWRP and install it.
This phone is much more challenging than other handsets due to the fact Google has implemented dual booting partitions. It also seems they aren't as interested in the developer community now that they are making their own phones and not just putting out an OS for Android. So, this handset isn't as friendly for devs, except for those who are really into masochistic behavior (self punishment). If you're looking for a really robust developer community you probably should stick to Samsung or a few other manufacturers and avoid Google for the foreseeable future.
Just my thoughts.

Truly disappointed the pixel line didn't follow on from nexus devices.

Really funny how things have changed. It wasn't that long ago that if you wanted a phone that was easy to root, and had tons of developers, with tons of ROM options, you got a Nexus. Now that the Pixels are here, it's just the opposite.
The only saving grace is Google will continue supporting the pixel until October 2019 so I'm not going to be stranded with a phone I can't update.
Got the XL as a warranty replacement for my almost 2 year old 6P that had battery dying issues.
I do like the XL, have it rooted with Magisk, just waiting for Pure Nexus. If revo gets Xposed working Oreo, may not go custom rom at all.

Quite a few devices are getting both official and unofficial 8.0 updates. As far as 8.1 I'm pretty sure it's still in beta so it's only available for the Google family of devices as there is no way to look into the source of the beta and try to compile it for other phones.
There are more issues than the A/B partition scheme that these phones have:
1) They are extremely expensive so there were not too many people who bought them in the first place
2) There are a lot of people and devs who have sold their Pixels for Pixel 2's
3) Project Treble which sounded like a good idea has actually caused more problems for this phone for custom development, which did not affect any Nexus models. All the kinks related to this need to be worked out too as it is a new issue as of Oreo

Is it worth the upgrade?
I got a broken 6P for 80€ and a broken Pixel for 180€
Both were replaced (Nexus against Nexus, cause it was bought from 3rd party and not Google).
Nexus would sell for 250€, Pixel for 400€

I miss my 6P, thought it was an awesome phone but the battery issue SOT of 2 hours after 2 years was killing me. Got the XL as a warranty replacement for virtually nothing, so it was a win-win.
Once the custom roms roll out, it will rival or exceed the 6P, I have no doubt.

My questions are:
What ROMs support eSIM?
Is it worth it to even flash the Pixel 3a? What things break? Should I really care about Active Edge and GPay?
How is the dev community for this phone or the line of Pixels?
The stock camera is already pretty good on the 3a, but are there any better ones in ROMs.
AOSP vs Pixel base vs ????
(Also, apparently Cyanogen mod is no more and is now Lineage? WTH...)
Anyways, I'd love to have a cool discussion/conversation with you all, technical or normal.

I hope someone else jumps in because I dont know all of the answers to your questions.
I don't know about eSIM sorry.
It could be worth it, its up to you what you deem as worth it. I personally have stuck to staying on everything on stock with magisk root because of Vanced Youtube. It's definitely worth it for me.
The dev community had a strong start and it has been growing. It's great, although it's not super big like some other lines ( for whatever reason that may be).
That I know of, Roms, either use stock or open camera.
I like stock because I like to update to the latest build from Google every month. Plus Q release will be out eventually and soon from what I hear.

If you want pay to work I've posted some methods in my root thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3a/how-to/root-3a-t3929053 they're at the bottom of the main post. The fully auto method is the one I've been using for a while.
