Hello everyone!
So I just need everyone's input on this.
Bought a pixel on eBay, recieved it today, and besides it being the wrong color pixel (I ordered blue and they sent black), I about jumped out of my seat when I noticed that this pixel was still running Anroid 7.1 with a build number of NDE63N and has the October 5, 2016 security patch level.
It's definitely a Verizon model because when I unlocked the developer option, the OEM unlocking was greyed out.
I'm embarrassed to ask this because I've read the forums here with my same question but couldn't really get a straight answer from those forums.
My question, I'm going to unlock the bootloader for sure, but if I update, say to Google's Oreo factory image (because I want that Pixel 2 camera mod), will the bootloader relock?
Noob question, but I figured it's better to ask a community who has knowledge than myself screwing this phone up.
Thanks in advance everyone!

The bootloader will not relock from updating or flashing the factory images.

Hey folks,
Long story short, I got rid of my 6P for an iPhone. I switch back and forth every year between both platforms, but man i'm missing android really bad lately, after only 2 months.
Can you root, unlock the bootloader, or put a custom kernel on the verizon pixel?
I dont really care for ROMs because flashing was becoming too time consuming, I just want stock image with a kernel.
Thanks,
Kinesics
With the release of Android 7.1.1 two days ago you can no longer unlock the Verizon bootloader using the depixel8 exploit. Of course if you get a phone that hasn't updated yet and can prevent that update you can unlock it.
I suggest you buy the Google store version instead. Fully unlockable and 100℅ compatible on Verizon. Even Verizon video chat works on the non Verizon one.

I would but my connect at Verizon is letting me do a return on my iPhone after 60 days, so really I'd pay nothing. Since the patch just came out 3 days ago I'm pretty sure i can find a phone thats been sitting on the self for 2 weeks.

Totally get that, some of the vzw deals are amazing. Just be careful when you first turn it on, read the various threads here and in the Pixel XL forums. Some say you can bypass setup to depixel8 and others have not been able to. Simply, plan it out really thoroughly.
As for just unlocking in order to install a kernel, I'm not really sure you need it. I've been bootloader locked since DP2 on my N5x and battery life is amazing on that and this device. So if you do unlock then update to 7.1.1 after that and run stock kernel for a week. You might want to give up flashing all together.. well other than the OTA which you can sideload.

I've had mine for about 36 hours. It's unlocked and rooted already!
Got my Pixel last week followed the steps and I'm in business. Unlocked and feeling right at home, no more sea of icons!

Thanks for help, went with stock OS and Franco kernel. I just cant be 100% stock. I did stay all stock for a few days but ultimately enjoy Franco's work.
So I had an interesting thing happen today. My phone's audio stopped working entirely. Any app that had or used sound causes my device to lock up entirely. Went through the standard steps, all the way to flashing back to stock, with the same issue. Called Google, and they informed me that it is 100% a hardware issue, and I need to RMA. Great. So I am in need of some advice. Since I have to send this to Google, I will want to be stock. I know that locking the bootloader is problematic, and will ultimately cause me to not be able to unlock. Should I lock the bootloader? It is going back to Google, but if they see it is a Verizon device with an unlocked bootloader, they may not like it. Also, while I know the people on XDA aren't mindreaders, maybe someone else will have dealt with this. What are the odds of getting a device with an exploitable build? Has anyone gotten a replacement from Google, and if so, what build was it running? I know I shouldn't expect to be able to unlock, but I can hope.
You have to wipe the device anyways and send it in. So why not just take the extra minute to lock the bootloader as a precautionary step?

The only thing I am worried about is if something happens before locking. I know that locking the bootloader has been heavily advised against by beaups, and I just don't want anything to happen during the locking process.

Dealing with this exact problem right now on my wife's Verizon Pixel.
It was bootloader unlocked and rooted, but still auto updated for the Feb update. Soon after, audio broke just as you described. I was able to get it back working for a little bit after a couple factory image flashes, but it broke again for good.
I contacted Google and they set me up with an RMA. I flashed an exploitable factory image, relocked the bootloader, and sent it in last Wednesday. The replacement should be delivered tomorrow. I'm really hoping it was on the shelf at Google since launch and depixel. The phone was useless otherwise, so I had no choice but to send it back. I wish they'd just send me a non-Verizon.

I'll try to update after the replacement comes tomorrow.

I went ahead and did the same thing. Let me know what build your replacement is. I still have my fingers crossed.
They all say they're Verizon models but almost everyone on this forum who has done this got a Google Play edition (it just has a Verizon SIM).
When I went through it, they said locking the bootloader was not necessary. Also, I got a brand new device with all accessories but they told me not to send the accessories in since I'd only be getting a phone back. Great experience for me. Props to Google for great service.

YES!!!!!
Replacement Pixel just delivered. Appears to be brand new. All accessories included (they told me to only return the phone)
Verizon SIM was installed (I removed before booting it up).
Android Version 7.1
October 5 security patch
Build NDE63P
OEM unlocking toggle was greyed out until I connected to wifi, then I was able to toggle it to allow the bootloader to be unlocked. It does appear to be a google play edition in every way except the sim card that is included.
This is awesome. I'm now jealous of my wife and her non Verizon version. (We both still have the old grandfathered unlimited data and used the best buy trick to get Pixels on subsidized upgrades)

For the record, the only person who got a Verizon model still was able to unlock the bootloader (it was a new device with old 7.1 software) using dePixel8 so I think you're set regardless! Google is good!
For those who had the audio-craps-out problem, can I ask when you ordered you phones?
My wife & I have Google Store devices. I ordered mine in the first week after launch, and it's been great. I ordered my wife's in early January and she has audio-craps-out disease.
So I'm wondering if there's a bad batch of Pixels?

I got a Verizon version in January and it had an issue I haven't seen too many have, but it was audio related and apparently a hardware defect: mine had awful sound through the headphone jack only. Sounded like hissing and scratching beneath all the music. As if you didn't have the connection tight (but I did). Got the replacement and all is well!

Mine was ordered through Verizon on November 12, and shipped the next day. I am going to assume that it was a launch device.
Mine was purchased from bestbuy.com in mid November. It actually shipped from a local Best Buy store.
I believe there is a bad batch of pixels. I'm currently on my second one.
A couple weeks ago my pixel crashed and shutdown and well never turned on again. Basically the phone was bricked. Idk how or why. I was running perfectly and I only had the bootloader unlocked.
Long story short. I contacted my provider (Project Fi) and they sent me a new one. Received it the next day. (Great customer service!!)
So yes I believe there is a bad batch of pixels out there.
Hi Folks,
Odd question maybe but I just got my pre-ordered Pixel 2 in today and am moving everything over. I have opted for the trade-in program since it estimates $380 value and with ebay and paypal fees I would be in the same ballpark regardless.
So this was a company Verizon purchased phone which I got on the earlier bootloader version so it was quickly unlocked, rooted etc. Long story short the company phone plan (awesome deal) is gone and I switched to google Fi a few months ago with great success. My question is, seeing as I am on the latest Pure Nexus build is when downloading the factory Sailfish images from Google to restore to stock do I want the Verizon specific version (of 7.1.2 i assume since that is the PN build) or do I want the version that specifies Fi or the one that specifies nothing at all? Any advise would be appreciated, thanks!
edit: also I was not planning on relocking the bootloader, only flashing stock. Any reason they would deny my trade-in for something like that?

Not sure if it would be a problem or not. If you are returning through a trade in program it may be best to return it to complete stock on a VZW build, even if it is an earlier build. You could even relock it then shut it off so it doesn't update. That way there are no issues as you returned a stock, Verizon branded Pixel.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I am up in the air at this point having both devices side by side. The 1 feels much more durable and I dont like the 3.5mm jack missing on the 2, I'll give it a week but may keep the original Pixel. I can say the camera is much better on the new one but sadly it just feels cheaper.
if they had included a 3.5mm port i would have purchased a pixel 2 as well :/
i may buy in a few months if i get tired the OG pixel
I appreciate any help you experts can give... links and videos. I'm running out of time and don't have enough to research everything... so I hate asking but I have to... I leave in 4 days and this device is still in the box.
My trusty and loved Nexus 6 of 4 years finally burned its charging port out and until the Pixel 3 hits.. I bought an S8 Plus. The model I have is G955u1z an unlocked S8+ I picked up from Best Buy. I hate to admit it but its been so long since I've done any flashing /updating because I had my N6 so well tuned.. that I'm rusty and at a loss of where to begin. Yes I'm searching, yes I'm googling and youtubing but often I am finding methods that aren't for the unlocked version and I don't want to go from box to brick in 3 days. For reference this device will be hooked up to my Verizon account.. I'm still using my N6 for the moment (thankfully it has Qi.. which has kept me from upgrading to a new Nexus or Pixel since). I understand that I will loose Knox.. and Samsung pay. Had to find out what that even was but don't think i would use it anyway.
So what is my first step? Update to the latest stock rom? Install TWRP immediatly? I see that there is something new.. Magisk but I'm not fully grasping it I guess to know if its better than Su, but from what i gather you can hide root from apps with it? Advantages/Disadvanatages? I'm also a dedicated Xposed user also, so that is a must to have. I really prefer the stock android experience but it seems most run the Renovate Ice 3.0 rom? Is there a way to make the other speaker work instead of that downward firing single one? Gesture navigation from the Pixel?
Please pick through guys... if you can help with anything I am in your debt. Just bad luck/bad timing when I should be excited about a new shiny.

Yes it's horrible
I have done research and downloaded everything that I think I need to do the job. Are there any differences I need to know to unlock the bootloader and root the T-Mobile branded Pixel 7 Pro? It will be arriving today.
Just need to follow the How-To Guide that's already been posted. Additionaly, with TMO, you need to make sure your phone is SIM-unlocked. Fastest way to do that is to seek out TMO Help on Twitter (I forgot their @ at the moment), and tell them you're going overseas for an extended period of time. They'll be able to remotely unlock the SIM for your permanently, which in turn will let you unlock the bootloader. Follow the How-To Guide from there.

They both achieve the same results. Guess it just a preference of which one you can follow along with.

You can look at the main thread here and it gives you more information on using the Pixel Flasher Tool. It's actually very user friendly. I definitely would do some reading until you feel comfortable using one of the guides. Unless you're familiar with adb/fastboot commands, which isn't hard. Then I might suggest using the Pixel Flasher Tool.

It's best to learn the manual way, that is the safest way, learning helps you in many ways, and you can always get yourself out of troubles, or for the very least it helps you post pertinent messages that others who know better can help you, and of course, once you know, you can help others, which is what XDA is all about.
The learning curve at first might appear steep, however I assure you, many before you have walked through those steps and managed, you can too, in the meantime if you're hesitant about any step, ask questions, we're all here to help you.
I only recommend automated tools like PF to those who know all the manual steps, and want to save some time skipping the tedious steps (yes it gets tedious when you do it every month, or for some more often).

As a fellow t-mo oneplus prisoner of war when it came to converting those phones (loss of sim/ bootloops/crash dumps/MSM back to stock 100 times) you'll be happy to hear having the pixel is almost like its 2012 all over again, Once you unlock the sim. No wonky sim crap, no unlock token needed and you can flash global firmware with zero issues. The fact I traded in a one plus 9 at t-mobile and got the P7P for close to nothing makes me love the phone even more.

Even for me, OnePlus hardware still has tons of appeal, but that the situation with bootloader unlocking is so murky and makes it a literal no-go for me. Even Samsung is better if you exclude the US.
OnePlus was the better option for 2020 with the Pixel 5 dud, but not a good option for 2022 and beyond.
I didn't buy a carrier-locked device since the Moto Z2 Force (Sprint didn't accept OnePlus), and replaced it with a non-carrier Pixel 3. Went OnePlus 8, and back to Pixel.
I know how to use adb ,fastboot, even fastboot advanced. I have never sideloaded anything and have not used any custom recoveries for many years. I used to theme but that was about 15-20 years ago. I was still using Cyanogenmod and clockwork.

This is the last carrier branded phone I will be purchasing, as long as finances support that decision.
My Pixel came in yesterday and in the system says sim slot 1 and sim slot 2. Is this able to use dual sims? The tray only seems to hold 1.

Luckily I haven't purchased a carrier branded phone since before the Nexus 5.
It is dual SIM but it's 1 nano SIM and 1 eSIM
I am unlocked. Thank you all for your help so far. I really appreciate you!
Another question for duel sim. If I have a sim (physical) and I use the download sim option, does it download the same sim? I have a second line that I would normally use (physical) and just swap out as needed. How would I get both esim and physical sim in the phone? I think I would just download the one that I have in the phone and install the one that I have outside the phone?
