Anybody interested in the bootloader and unlocking it I encourage you to sign this petition. These phones are ours to use how we see fit and the more noise we make the better our chances are. I bought this phone under the assumption that nothing had changed and for Samsung to change their policies without notice isn't acceptable for me and hopefully you as well. Thank you

Dude, there's honestly no point. Ive been on xda for about 10 years and ive always need to root every single android phone ive owned. Until recently, Samsung started making pretty good android phones starting with the s6 and up. I had no reason to root my s6, note 5, and now no reason to root my s7 edge. Im not saying you should have no need to root yours, i just feel like Samsung and android have come a long way and nowadays rooting serves no purpose;for me at least. Is rooting worth losing Samsung pay or any other security features we need to protect us? Not really. Also, Samsung can change their policies as they please, you still bought their phone. Rooting died a couple years ago, move on. Best of luck with your petition.
No point is simply just not true. I haven't even looked at a Samsung until the S6 last year and I got the M9 instead. Now with HTC dumping boomsound on the M10 I switched after 8 HTC phones. While I agree Samsung has come a long way not only in hardware but software and you can do more things now without root I still miss it a lot. Have this phone a week now, not having root sucks. It's just not the same. While yes you can do quite a bit without it, there is still plenty missing. People saying that root is dead or they don't need it is just denial for the fact that things have got so locked down it's not worth justifying the hassle which might just be true.
Let's say knox was never developed, triangle away still worked so you could also go back to stock and you could flash away with an unlocked bootloader everyone would be singing a totally different tune and you guys would be rooted. Now that Samsung has total control, we have to justify it to ourselves on why it makes sense not to root which frankly right now I think is the case.

Its all good if you have no interest then that's fine but I for one do. I hate touchjiz and the bloatware that is just the tip of the iceberg. Rooting will never die maybe some people don't but most that have rooted will always want it. Thanks for your input though. Without root we really don't have any need for a development section so this forum will likely die. I'm jumping ship to the lg g5 until samsung does something if they ever do.

I personally have no problem with Samsung locking things down. In fact for the general pop it will be great, but since we live in the free world it Samsung should still allow the option of choice. As long as they have the proper disclaimer in place that warns of consequences the one can make the decision. I think the big reason for the locked bootloader has to do with carriers leasing the phones. Since rooting breaks the pay app and can't reversed. Just imagine if you got a previous leased phone and the pay app doesn't work. What samsung should do is allow for a complete reset factory action including knox. Maybe not have it available to the general public but maybe the carriers or somewhere higher up. This would give the best of both worlds.

Dude you've been here 5 years. I've been here 7. Neither of which matters. Rooting didn't die any more than rock and roll did when disco came along.
I drive a semi and without root I can't get the headphone, or bluetooth, volumes high enough when running through the trucks stereo. And before you start talking about headphones, those that cover both ears are illegal and i don't like listening through only one ear. So I want root. If you don't that's wonderful for you, but please don't step onto a developers board, claim seniority you just don't have, and try to tell people the board has become meaningless.

This is my second account ive definitely been here since the palm and original HTC touch days with Windows pocket lol. But to the point, rooting is dead per se, but there's definitely less of a reason to do so these days. Touch wiz is damn near perfect. Even for those thay dont like it can slap a launcher on it. I see no purpose to root, i can block ads with ad guard. Also stock android doesnt have all the bells and whistles either so id rsther stay stock. Again, i know others may need it, but i was simply saying its pointless thess days. I still come here for many other things, just not to root.

And I don't use stock android. I use rooted and modded versions of Sprint's base ROM. The only stock versions I have truly liked and used are by Temesek, and those tend to be few and far between on Sprint variants.
I also never use Touchwiz. It's been NovaLauncher for years now for me. And I just prefer all the little conveniences and tweaks that you can make with root. Like an extended power menu without having to add more apps from Google Play. And several diagnostic tools I use to troubleshoot when I have a weak or slow signal where I shouldn't.
So I'm really happy that your content to live with what Samsung and Sprint deign to allow you, I'm not. And since these boards seem to be doing just fine, I would guess that there are enough people who agree with me to make your opinion not nearly as wide spread as you believe it to be.
And one final question, if you believe rooting is pointless and dead, why are you still on these boards?

I still come here for other things, like questions i may have, apps, reviews, and ive been here for so long i still help others when i can. Its still a community i am apart of regardless if i root or not.

Root or not to root is a matter of opinion, I think it is far from dead or useless imo.
I have rooted every phone I have ever had that it was capable on within 24 hours of getting the phone just because I want to put on the phone what I want not what Samsung thinks I want.
I don't fit well with the masses and rooting let's me be that way with my phone....
That said this has been seen before on other devices and has been worked around by the amazing devs on this sight.

Rooting will never die unless the manufacturers kill it. It has too much of a following with people that love to root and need to root. So yes no root is a huge deal for me I'm coming from a Nexus 6 where I had multirom and weekly updates. The phone never gets boring when it is unleashed and rootable. I have had the Edge for about a week and I'm already bored/frustrated with it. I'm going to the Sprint store today to try and return it. My Nexus 6 flies compared to the S7 Edge even though its specs are way better. Hardware can only get you so far the software is what makes the phone fly. The stock S7 Edge has so much BS bloatware and unneeded stuff that slows it down significantly. Give me the international one and maybe I would keep it. Also, the Samsung pay is a joke for me because it doesn't support any of my banks or cards. I will be preordering the LG G5 or waiting for the next Nexus.
We should have the option.
I don't really need to root today, because I primarily use the phone for business and I don't want to have it down because I change my mind on which ROM to pick every 6 hours.
But I want the option to get rid of the ****, yes, ****, they put on this phone. Why they load junk I can't get rid of is beyond me.
If we can't control the phone, I'll have to jump off the Samsung bandwagon next year...no matter how good they make it.

So I've had this thought about this locked bootloader problem. I am not sure if this is a viable solution or whether it would even work. I was thinking that our European brethren has an unlocked bootloader. Would there be a way to Odin their bootloader on our devicesor would the fact that they have a different processor be a problem. Because in theory if we had a Samsung sign Odin file of with an unlocked bootloader we should be able to Odin and have a unlocked bootloader, no? Or is there more to it than that?

Good question. But no, it would not work. Not even because it's a different processor, which that is part. But say if T Mobile got an unlocked bootloader, it would not work for Sprint. Nor would it necessarily help to know how it happened and use it as a road map to unlock another carrier's bl.

I would suggest waiting to see if the bootloader is locked down on the lg g5 before ordering. I was not planning to root my s7e, but I must say I was curious to see what this powerhouse was capable of if unleashed from touchwiz,sadly I will never know.:crying:

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Sprint S7 & S7 Edge will end up just like the
ATT Note 5 and S6 Edge/Edge+ phones and will NEVER have root. LOL
I would strongly advice & suggest NOT to get rid of your current rooted phones at least not yet!!!
(unless you buy a different brand which can be rooted)

I have the firmware for the Chinese model s7 edge it is the closest match to ours and the firmware will not load in odin. It checks against the model and csc codes so we couldn't even cross flash with t-mobiles firmware. I have the bootloader posted over in t-mobile forums and a few people are poking around to see what can be done. Unfortunately bootloader and hardware hacks are nothing I have ever done before.

I'm in the same boat as many of you -- I purchased several Note 5's new from Verizon and then learned that they are not readily rootable....which prevents me from using their full functionality. Irritating.
I have a decent amount of experience with software development/reverse engineering/breaking things/making things work...but I've never messed around with phone firmware before. Usually I connect directly to the hardware chips via JTAG or similar to dump/upload the modified images. I don't really want to crack these sealed phones open though... surely there must be a way to dump/image the phone via the data port? I've read that Note 5 for other carriers are rootable, so how does dumping/uploading bins work for them? What is different about Verizon's model? Are they requiring digitally signed bins? Also I've seen a few people mention Knox....if Knox is tripped does it blow a fuse or can it be reset?

Samsung Knox gets tripped and effectively bricks the device the second it detects root. It blows a fuse. Dead phone.
If you have to ask this question then rooting is not something you need! =D Coming from rooting every phone for the past 5 years, I haven't had a need to root this phone. Granted there are a few things NOT working because of verizon nit picking hsit in the build. Fonts not working for one, nothing that is really a deal breaker. I def dont miss the flashing of builds every week/month, keeping things updated and waiting on developers. Google is smart enough to listen to its consumers and for the most part every new build of android has vast improvements and functionality.. rooting for the most part will be so that you can control the hardware and do whatever you want with your phone, which I believe that is how it should be...i ve stuck with verizon because of the quality of service they provide. Awesome speeds, damn near accessible everywhere, havent had a dropped call in YEARS. But from a tech standpoint, they are a bit ridiculous when it comes to their hardware. I hope they release a line of phones that are rootable and still keep a "protected" option for those who dont want phones that can be tampered with by rooting, security issues, etc.. who knows.. but i wouldnt hold your breath waiting on root for this phone.. best bet is the note 7 coming out and hope a root is found.. but, I imagine its going to just get harder and harder for developers with encryption and new securities..

I understand and agree about the flashing and dealing with the bugs on new roms. All I want is the ability to delete apps I don't want. I know debloaters are out there and they work and that's great and thanks to their developers. I think we are owned the freedom to delete what we don't want. It's like the cable companies sticking us with shows we never want or watch.

I used to feel that way. I used to root every phone I got (if I could) just so I could use Titanium backup to first disable apps and then if I had no problems, uninstall them. Bu with my Note 5 I've concluded it would be a waste of time, even if I could do it. I use Package Disabler Pro (as do many on this forum) and no, it doesn't actually delete apps. They are still there taking up space. but they don't run and unless you are critically short of space, the actual space they consume is minimal. My only complaint against Pakcage Disabler is that I wish it worked on my Asus tablet. but alas, it only woks on Samsung devices.

Has anyone compared Package Disabler to Debloater?
Yeah, Package Disabler is the way to go (IMO). You don't need a computer as with Debloater. Don't get me wrong, Debloater is great, but it's nice being able to disable apps on the go. Not to mention, Package Disabler allows you to export your lists of disabled apps to an XML file, so you can simply import the list back if you need to (say, after a factory reset). Just my thoughts.

It's not rooted yet. There is something in the works, but nothing yet. We haven't given up yet.

no root buddy if ure on mm mm requires bootloader unlock to root and between att and verizon they have the tightest locked bootloader of them all
i got rid of my note 5 but it was the first device that wasnt make or break over root like other posters said get s package disabler and ure good

it disables all the bloatware on ure note 5 even without root saves loads of battery and speeds up the device in my opinion
this one works by being a device administrator and it lets u disable tons more stuff than in the standard application manager on the device

I soft bricked my Note 5 and then had problems flashing with ODIN. After I was able to flash though, the screen briefly showed an unlocked padlock. Is that typical? Is the bootloader rendered insecure when you upgrade for a brief window?
I was hoping after the bootloader unlock that just happened, I'd be able to find some roms available, but there doesn't seem to be. Is anyone aware of any?

I hope it gets better, otherwise I don't plan on locking the bootloader or rooting.
It's a pretty new phone, so give it some time. With the current ability to unlock a Verizon phone and being able to get a Verizon phone for pretty much half price, I'm sure there will be plenty more developers grabbing one. Plus, being about as stock Android as possible, most people have what they want. Rooting even without a plethora of custom ROMs still gives you the ability to theme with substratum.

I'm already running Substratum, I was running it rootless before we lucked out on the bootloader.
I honestly want a modified stock rom with simple things, like center clock, battery presentable and advanced reboot, that kind of stuff. Nothing crazy

Haven't tried any yet, but there is a thread in the mod section that contains small things like center clock. Don't remember the other things, but that one stuck out to me.
Yeah it's weird, the OP5T, which is a newer phone relative to the P2, already has four more custom ROMs than the P2, two of which are 8.0 or greater. Plus they already have fully functional TWRP recoveries whereas our device is still stuck in beta.
Did Google do a really good job at locking down and encrypting the device, even with the bootloader unlockable, that devs are being driven away to other devices?
There is next to no development for this phone. I don't imagine that it will have the same development push as the OnePlus.

Yeah it's weird, the OP5T, which is a newer phone relative to the P2, already has four more custom ROMs than the P2, two of which are 8.0 or greater. Plus they already have fully functional TWRP recoveries whereas our device is still stuck in beta.
Did Google do a really good job at locking down and encrypting the device, even with the bootloader unlockable, that devs are being driven away to other devices?

I bought this over the OnePlus 5T because of the 2-year warranty and guaranteed updates for 3 years. With the 5T I was worried that they might only go one more update after Oreo. I love this little phone the camera is phenomenal and for the extra hundred dollars I paid over what I would have paid for the 5T I feel it is still worth it. I really do hope we get some custom roms, but in the end I can live with it.

Does the 5T have the a/b partition scheme that the Pixel phones have? If not, that would explain why it was much simpler to get TWRP working with it. That would also explain why there are more ROMs, I think. The a/b partition scheme and other security features on Pixel do seem to make it much less desirable for developing custom ROMs.
Personally, I think having two separate partitions with two entirely separate installations of the OS, just so that people don't have to reboot their phones when they update, is one of the most needless complications and waste of storage space I can imagine. Was the update process really bothering people that much?
It is weird to think that this is what Google has come to. Not like the old Nexus days. I've read that eventually all Android phones will probably have the features that Pixel phones have which make it more difficult to develop for them. Hopefully that will mean that the developers will figure out how to make it work and things will get better for phones like the Pixel. But who knows.
Ever since Google came out with the Pixel phones, development has pretty much died because it is extremely hard to get around the A/B partitioning that comes with these phones. Many of the big player developers have stated not to expect custom roms for this device.
OnePlus phones don't have this partitioning issues, not even with the Oreo update since they still base many things based on Nougat.
It took a long time for the original Pixel to get traction with custom rom development.
Eh, I have unlocked version of P2. The BL is still locked but oem unlock is ticked on dev settings. Google updates this phone monthly and guaranteed support for 3 years. On top of all that it's a great phone as is. I am not losing sleep over lack of development. Google has been pushing for more commercial appeal and the seamless and fast updates are their strategy. I personally love how fast it takes to install an update every time I update my windows 10 lap top I appreciate Google's strategy that much more
I agree the phone is great and I'm not complaining about the stock experience. I was just hoping for a custom rom based on stock with small customizations. Maybe XPosed will come out soon ish and I can just use Gravity Box. Stock 8.1 with Gravity Box would be great.
Either way I'm totally stoked about bootloader unlock and root on the Verizon P2. I got it through work for $200 out the door, so I didn't go with the Google play version, which was a tough decision for me. Glad I did it now.

Yeah, Substratum runs just fine without root. You might want to check out some themes for your center clock and advanced reboot options. I'm running center clock now with a locked bootloader. I really wonder about roms coming out for the device because Verizon can be unlocked. There has always been a Google version and even on the Pixel, which is well over a year old, I think there only might be a single rom or two. I'm not entirely sure why either. Look at the Nexus and the 5X and there were a ton of roms and kernels and options. I'd love to know what happened to development on the Pixels. Needless to say I wouldn't hold out much hope at this point.

Rootless Substratum was great, I was stoked to have the option. I had to teach myself not to update apps while I was away from a computer and able to laugh Andromeda though.
I had the 6P and development on that is amazing. That goddammned early shutdown bug forced me to get rid of it, else I'd still be on that. Just a hair over a year old and it was useless, my ass is still chapped about that.
Anyways, I just left the xposed forums and rovo himself states that XPosed for Oreo is 95% complete, so I'm going to wait on that. Stock rom with Gravity Box will be exactly what I want.

You do know you don't need to be at a computer to launch Andromeda, right? Once it's connected it will stay that way until you either reboot or put the device into file transfer mode. Moot now since you're rooted.
Yeah, my 5x battery was just awful. I think if I could have replaced it or gotten a larger battery I would have stuck with that too for another year and skipped the Pixel and gone directly to the Pixel 2. But now the Mrs. has the Pixel after getting rid of her awful S5. So all is good now. Well that is after I had to replace the Pixel due to GPS failure. Just couldn't lock on all of a sudden. The replacement was able to be unlocked but I'll not do that to her. She doesn't even like the word "root". She scowls at me if I even mention bootloader. lol

Oh yeah, but I found that some themes would not apply correctly without a reboot. Swift Black for instance, would sometimes theme the notifications bright white, until rebooted which it is then correct.

Yes, same here. But once it's applied you only need to reconnect if you want to change it. But it is nice to have it working.

It has to do with how difficult it is to manage the A/B and encryption. After the nexus and removal of the dedicated recovery sector its harder overall to customize the phone. I believe one plus has the same set up at the old nexus.
Myself as well I'll just leave it stock unless there is a custom rom but the stock kernel is fine and won't wipe the entire phone and reset everything just for a custom kernel.
It really is unfortunate that is so hard now to modify the phone but Google is making that process more difficult I personally was interested in the OnePlus but it doesn't work for my carriers of CDMA. So Google's phone is the only other option I'd consider

I'm thinking about buying this phone at this moment (Black Friday). My question is : is it worth buying considering this model has been received 2 major updates? I think Samsung update policy is to release only 2 big updates for their models. This model was launched with Nougat, now is running with Oreo and, presumably, will end with Pie. Is this correct?

Wrong one major update 7.1 to 8.0 I believe it will get 9.0 but not sure.
Personal I pass on the ab but I got the ab+ version.

According to many websites, it's very very likely this phone will have Pie. But the question is if that version will be the last one (not eligible for Android Q). It's well-known that Samsung do not care mid/low range models regarding upgrades (other than security patches).
Another question: does this phone still have the annoying FRP Lock protection? I would like to root the phone, but this protection is a pain in the ass. My old Galaxy Grand prime still has it.

I think if I flash the stock ROM with Odin I will recover the warranty, right? I have already rooted my old Galaxy. The problem is the root access when the FRP Lock protection is still present.
When you root the phone, if you have configured any Google account (needed for Play Store), the phone does not boot when is rebooted (the bootloader detects an 'unofficial' firmware installed). In order to bypass it (and reboot your phone when is needed), you need to remove all your Google accounts first and therefore this is a PITA. So my question (to rooted users) is if this protection is still present, and if so, if there is a way to get rid of it.

I'm reading about rooting in this forum and I have realized that this model is not easy to root, specially if you already are in Oreo (very likely if I buy now the phone). I have found several threads about this question but it's not clear what is the 'best guide'. Also I have found the following tutorial HERE.
Can you elaborate a bit?

There's already a pretty good guide here on how to install a custom recovery and root this phone made by @corsicanu. I followed it just about a week ago when my phone was 5 days old and I had no problem whatsoever. I had OREO 8.0 and I was super scared about my phone being locked since I had never listened to that before. This phone is really worth it. Size, display and performance is 10/10 for me. On the contrary, the main camera is below average. I have yet to found a good version of the gcam since all I have tried are not working properly. My last device was a Xiaomi MI A2, but it only lasted two weeks. The reasons to replace the MI A2 are bad display outdoors, too big of a phone, super bad adio quality (headphone wise) plus no headphone jack, low lasting battery and no NFC. I swear to you there are very low options that are as packed as this galaxy a8 2018. It cost me 290€ on a retail store so I'm super happy.

Other than that... unlike older Galaxy models I cannot recover my warranty when the device is rooted, right? I have read that the warranty bit is changed, the bootloader detects an 'unofficial' firmware and there is no way to avoid this.

It is indeed. Flashing and rooting your device does not make it less stable. My galaxy a8 is working like a charm. I don't have my phone rooted but I have had it and the only problem for me is I have always a notificacion shown saying device is in danger, you must restart. Unlike some other devices, samsung smartphones are not able to be reverted. Once you trip knox, there's no going back. Even if you flash back an original ROM with ODIN, the phone will still known its been modified.

Thanks again. Where did you see that warning? Is it annoying? Can you hide it?
And a last question: I suppose you know the FRP Lock protection. With this guide, is the FRP Lock protection gone forever?
On a side note, I still have my old Galaxy Grand Prime (2015 model) rooted, with TWRP 3 installed and the Knox counter has the value 0x0 (not tripped). So it seems new models like the A8 have a reinforced protection against hacking...

But yesterday morning after I got the android pie / one ui OTA .. I cannot use substratum and andromeda anymore!! I hate the themes from the galaxy store with a passion.
Is it worth rooting just to theme? I guess losing Knox ain't a problem. My phone isnt under warranty, it's a tmobile phone unlocked with different cell carrier.

I tried pie on my wifes phone. Its cool. I like it. But nothing compares to a rooted device even if you dont have custom roms or that good stuff. Even a 1.5 year old s8 still get better battery life than a new stock one with all my tweaks. I even kind of broke the 80% charge barrier litrelly last night. Got a 90% charge. So imo if your a smart fellar and can follow the root mwthod instructions to a t i would always pick root over updates. Im still on a revision 2 bootloader and plan to be til the death of my device
I see you say tmobile. The US devices or U models cannot trip knox. You lose samsung pay while rooted but you can always restore back stock. Secure folder and pay will work after. Since we have locked bootloaders. And no way to unlock them since they are signed with 256 bit sha keys.
I got dual speaker mods, modded touchwiz, deodexed. Completely themed out. I try all kinds. I push root to its limits for a locked bootloader.

And what is the 80% barrier? I read something earlier trying to find a rom if I were to root... I got parallels installed on my computer so I could have used Odin. (I sadly own a hackintosh, built from scratch mac in a PC tower)

The kernel we have from Samsung the they do graciously left open to use for permissive root. Has a80% charge cap set in place from Samsung. Its a safety thing.
