Hi just wondering if there's any point to rooting these days?i mean the s8+ pretty much bang on!can rooting offer anything extra?I understand like an iPhone is miles better jailbroken but s8 seems to pretty much to a lot!!any ideas folks
I only rooted because I wanted to remove system app and use Titanium Backup.
But if you don't use or need those 2 apps...not worth rooting.
Matt.
I used to root all of my previous phones, including S2+, S4 and S6. I loved custom roms and additional battery saving tweaks or performance tweaks, overclocking, downclocking etc. The S8+ has a huge battery and a great system, so most of the features that I'd get via rooting on the older phones are already here. Also, if you root you void your warranty, and trust me, you don't know when you'll need it . And let's not forget the amount of times that I've flashed something the wrong way or idk something got corrupted and I had to reflash and lose all my data. Staying stock is the best choice on S8+.
Of course it's worthy. You can improve the camera quality with Zero Camera Mod, get better performance with kernels and get rid of the annoying ads.
IN MY OPINION
No, it's not worth it. There may be some advantages to rooting, but you can do MOST of those things without root. Samsung Internet Browser already blocks ads. There's some nonroot apps that will block and across the phone if you don't mind using a VPN.
You can disable unwanted apps with BK Disabler Pro (I think that's what it's called).
The camera is already great. I can't speak for Zero Camera Mod, but the Pixel camera works great on this phone.
I used to unlock bootloaders on every device I owned. Wouldn't buy one with a locked bootloader. I rooted. I flashed custom ROMs. I used Xposed and customized. Then I stopped customizing everything. Then I stopped flashing custom ROMs. Android finally got the point I was happy with it out of the box. When I got my S8+ I realized Samsung's software wasn't bad at all, and I actually enjoyed it.
Now I just read thread after thread of people bricking and soft bricking their phones after rooting. People having issues going back to stock to take upgrades. Honestly, I just shake my head and chuckle, because it all seems like such a big hassle and headache, that really does nothing more than disable things like Samsung Pay.
So no, to me, it's NOT worth it. I enjoy my S8+ and my Note 8 with no desire to root it. When I want to customize it, I apply a theme. I just use the Samsung themes, but have thought about trying Substratum. There's always Nova Launcher and the Pixel Launcher if you want a different look as well.
That's my opinion, and it's worth about a buck two eighty. Get the phone. Run it stock for a while and see if you REALLY miss root. Then decide.
No, for the 1st time I must say on S8+ on Nougat it is not worth. You can disable all apps you don't need without root, remap bixby button, set permissions to apps, remove ads without VPN (Adhell2) etc.
Oh coarse it's worth it, for many reasons . . . .
. . . . . . . now what were those reasons . . . . . ?
oh yes, it turns the phone into a 'Super' phone.
You didn't know that is where the 'S' comes from in Galaxy 'S' 8, did you?
There isn't much customization to accomplish for rooting/custom recovery at the moment. I, at the moment, have twrp-d G950F and Stock G955U1. Strangely, I found myself using G955U1 more than that rooted G950F. Given that there is only TW based roms atm, fonts-theming can be acquired through substratum or flipfonts, and Adblocking using adhell. I basically rooted my device to test ROMs to maximize battery life but there is only little variation to them that I sincerely think that stock G955-U1 ROM is better than other, though I do adore the new samsung oreo keyboard that can add gifs to almost all apps that I am using, unlike its current nougat counterpart. But again, U1 is pretty clean and slim rom. I tried oreo beta, through that samsung.firmware.science, but there is currently no comparable U1 oreo beta, there is only U roms that will install carrier CSC and its added apps to the phone. It almost made me wanting to root to remove those apps, but given the near release of oreo, i ended up choosing to go back to my stock nougat u1 rom. I heard its possible to flash any stock rom to any s8 family.
Go check out CarHDROM. He has ported a Note 8 ROM for the 8+. Very nice and has built in a number of things you will not find on stock, built-in.
I can agree that initial messing about with rooting, setting up a custom ROM can take a little time, it's hardly more than a stock ROM. Some folks have to re-do things to get it just right, but once done, it can be spectacular. 'Rolling your own' can have it's own 'rewards', as it allows for some creativity beyond the stock ROM, and there are a good number of things you can do with a rooted phone, that you can not with a stock phone.
If you are new to rooting, etc, there is a learning curve that can be tranquilly taken over short hours, to days to weeks. Tranquil. The Samsung Odin software and the how to's are pretty straight forward to follow, and most of the time folks here are available to help, though that is not always 'guaranteed'. Some posts/requests for help sit idle either longer than the OP would like, or just remain static, though that is not an often case.
I ran the same custom ROM on my old iPhones, OnePlus One, G3, and once setup with a nice custom ROM, did not change them out.
CarHDROM is very well established, and version v9 (last Nougat) is very stable and very extended with it's added abilities. Carotix takes a lot of time with the users.
That ROM is now on v10 (Orego beta), and going through it's growing pains.
I have v9. Smooth, trash free, and well thought out.
I think all the versions are available for download/use.
It is worth checking out.
At any rate, either stock or custom, the 8/8+ is a great phone.
In the (motorcycle) biking side of life there is a saying for (legitimate) bike owners: "Ride it like you stole it".
Have fun with your S8.

So im using the moar rom and i saw there are like 5 new verisions of the latest firmware. After some reading i found if you download the ota update you can then install it with the flashfire app. But ota doesnt let me even look for an update. So i tried removing root from supersu opition and phone got stuck in bootloop. Then i tried to find the firmware bootloader from the moar list and didnt find it also. So only way i know how to upgrade firmware is download from sammobile, odin, then reroot reflash.
anyways no surprise no 1 can answear, but i understand the majority had the note 4...and would of gotten the note 7 when it was time to upgrade. So there isn't support for note 5, espically how a whole year went by and theres only really 1 rom, that is also outdated now. No offense to moar but i loved using it for so long, but i just realized moar is 5 firmware upgrades behind and its just moar. So what i decided to do is go back to being offcial, untill note 8 comes and support ends for note 5. Thats what ive read on google, if there are firmware upgrades its better to be on stock, once support ends then its better to be on custom rom. So when i do have my new note 8 in hand i can revert to w.e verision moar ends up
Ya i would of never probly got this phone if i new there was such a lack of support for it. When i was doing a little research b4 i got this phone i found alot of different development for the note 5. Didnt realize most of it was for the other versions besides sprint. O well. As for getting ota updates i believe u have to flash back to stock. So odin back to official stock firmware.
It's Samsung in-house processor to blame for not having cm or aosp ROMs to play with and only tw ROMs. there is only so much you can do different on tw to make it your own. Phones everywhere is getting locked down and developers are leaving or getting older a lot of stuff plays into why there not a lot of options but be grateful at least we have something. Try the note 7 ports which are nice or try creating our own ROM to share.

Exactly, because of Android Pay, and Samsung Pay, there are valid reasons why you don't want back doors into a device. I think the age of custom roms is coming to a close, I'm sure someone will be able to develop something, but the time investment to do that goes up exponentially the harder they make it to unlock a device.
In all honesty, other than bloat and battery life I have seen no reason to root my current Note 5. I had done it to a previous Note 5 that broke, but didn't see much of a difference in battery life.

There will always be custom roms, just not for U.S. based carriers that have the ability to lock the phones down. However, many of the true android phones are still available in unlocked models...
I know that the LG v20 and the Google Pixel are a couple models that will work in the U.S. Getting international unlocked models is tricky because they may not work well with our bands.
Custom roms are about having extra features like free hotspot and lots of other stuff that doesn't come stock. Truthfully, I don't use but a small percentage of features I offer in ours.
I recently got a second-hand S6 from work. My first step is always to look up the XDA forums on the phone to see what my options are.
It seems that a lot of people are happy with the stock ROM, so that could be enough. However, I like root, since I like certain apps that need root. So if that already triggers KNOX, I might as well install Lineage on it while I'm at it.
So I'd love to hear some opinions. Should I stick to stock, or go through the (badly documented, sorry) process of getting this phone customized?
You should definitely stick with stock ROM if you want to use your phone as daily driver.
I always liked the call recording feature so I can keep track of verbal agreements made over the phone. I believe it can be done using Xposed, but Lineage has it built-in (although it doesn't auto-trigger unfortunately). Even with stock, I'd still need root to do it, and that triggers Knox, right?
Thanks, hopefully some more people will have something to say about it.
Custom ROMs are good, but there are always some sort of malfunctions.
For a phone that has an up-to-date firmware, I wouldn't install custom ROM.
While S6 support has dropped, meaning that it will no longer receive an update, but it still has an updated firmware, I would say it will stay good for at least one more year.
After that I'll consider installing custom ROMs, just like what I did with my older phones.
And as @forumber2 mentioned, for a daily driver, stock is better.
However, if you don't mind troubleshooting the issues on the custom ROM and have the time, then you should install it.
And about rooting, yes, it will trigger the Knox, but since Nougat, I've unrooted my phone and I personally didn't need to root it again, though I'm kinda considering it.
The bottom line is that stay with the stock for a while, if didn't satisfy you, then install customs. The stock ROM, doesn't have many issues, or at least I didn't encounter many that I couldn't solve, just like any other stock ROM.
stock ROM. but you can root it and use xposed to do some things you want..
None of the AOSP ROMs have a camera that is on par with the stock one - that's my reason for sticking through with stock on an Android phone since... ever, really. I'm not a fan of keeping things the way they are. If the camera would be as good as on stock, I'd ditch stock immediately, but unfortunately, the drivers for the camera are proprietary, so, it's unlikely that that will ever be the case.
BUT you can get stock-based custom ROMs - I'm currently using the S8+ port, which seems to be working flawlessly. They are usually debloated, with various tweaks and features that aren't usually available, quicker and just generally better.
Stay stock man custom Rom are bad you will lose many futures and performance and battery . I play games on s6 I tried all custom Roms nothing worked always end up with performance and Wi-Fi problems I am now on latest stock nougat and I will just wait until I find cheap s8 then I will sell this poor s6.
There nothing you can do about s6 to get him better than stock. Nothing except get root to use some apps like change location or install some sound apps that requires root..thats it
I've had android phones ever since my Samsung i5700 in 2009. Every single phone since then has been rooted, I've tried every ROM, Kernel, config out there in a bid to make it the best it can be.
I've used rooting for better GPS, no ads, better performance, better battery, better display, better sound.
Since I've had the OP6, I can see no reason to root it. GPS is great, block this, blocks ads, battery life is great (with Greenify, some debloating) bar launcher gets my pulldown menu, black player provides great audio (with good earphones)
It's sooo nice to update to an OTA without fiddling, it's great to actually use the phone, instead of constantly fiddling with it.
I never realised OnePlus made such awesome phones, and I've tried a lot!
Anyone else running stock due to the awesomeness?

Easier substratum, Viper, hotspot, some Magisk tweaks, and the most important of all, Titanium Backup! I am unrooted with my Note 8, note complaints, but always go back to me OP6 because of root.

How do you block ads without root? It is actually my only reason for doing it.
Use block this APK https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/block-this.en.aptoide.com/amp
See https://bestforandroid.com/adblocker-apps/
It's.open source, DNS based, very lightweight
I'm with you bro no root awesome as it is. @Christian1678 you don't need to root to block ads; Adguard, Adclear, Block This. just to name a few.
I'm an inveterate modder and can't help myself.
But I agree this is the best phone I've ever had and I've only bothered doing a few things. Not even running xposed (to preserve Google Pay) and not really missing it.
I need root at least for Titanium Backup (my reliable local backup with data included), SDMaid (for cleaning up old data from apps), Viper4Android (for amazing sound) and xposed for XprivacyLua (if apps are too snoopy). I will never use GPay so this is no problem for me.
But you are right with the system-updates: they are running very well and smooth.
I've had most Oneplus phones, including the one, X, 3T, etc,. All of the have been rooted day one.... except the 6.
With this phone I just feel reluctant to root. As the OP said, this is so good, it has most features I need, that I see no need to take the risk of rooting.
I used to root all Android phones I had. The main reason for doing so was to extend the life of the phone due to almost nonexistent software updates, but Oneplus is doing well on this regard as well.
Battery life is excellent. It is almost 3 pm here and I am at 80% with moderate use.
Stability is not an issue. I've rebooted the phone twice since I bought it and these due to the OTA updates received.
So, I might in the future ( if I keep it long ), but for the time being it is kept virgin.
Cheers
I agree with OP, I've rooted all of my previous phones but see no reason to do so with this phone. I actually really like not 'having to' constantly optimize every detail or rom settings and flashing and all that, and just enjoy the phone as it is.
Yep, i'm thinking the same with this. My OP6 arrived yesterday and so far the only things I can consider needing a root/unlock are:
Ad-Free YouTube (with a black background )
Nandroid Backup
My previous device (Moto X Style) suffered a severe brick problem and since the beginning of May Ive been using a spare iPhone 6 quite happily (Not fantastic but as a no fuss daily driver it was fine). I believe a good portion of my niggles with the previous phone were down to the constant tweaking/flashing, though LineageOS did make it a joy to use again once support for it dried up.
If there was a decent way of achieving the adfree Youtube without the need to unlock/root I would be happy. Though it is good to know OnePlus are doing a decent job of updating the OS.
Edit: Well the Youtube requirement I had is sorted! Youtube Vanced edition has a non-rooted version that does the job for me.
I'll see how long I can resist rooting, I traditionally root my devices within days of them arriving (back in the win mobile days of course we did the unlocked bootloader and superCID etc...!).
Same here , I always rooted all my phone's , except this and Nokia 8.
I see no point on rooting a near stock android phone. Its fast as it is.
Rooting Samsung is necessary tho , with that touchwiz is horrible.
I have always found bugs on roms. At least stock has been tested before release.
I am with you on this one. I however rooted because I needed titanium backup to work for 2 apps I had to restore backups from when I change devices but outside of that I really don't need root on this device. Battery life is awesome averaging 6 hrs SOT consistently which is insane as I'm used to maybe getting 3.5 hrs on previous devices. I haven't needed to do any tweaks anything either and it's nice not having to always be flashing roms just to get better performance or battery life. Like I love resurrection remix rom but I don't need it now especially with it killing some functionality (NFC etc).
The OP6 is awesome!

[QRCODE][/QRCODE]I root day one too.
Reasons are Titanium backup, sd maid, magisk modules (viper, xposed) and xposed (afwall, xprivacylua, edge pro, gravitybox). Can't live without these apps anymore.
I don't customize (themes, ...) or use any other mods (kernel, custom rom, battery tweaks, ...). Just stock rom, twrp, magisk, xposed. No problem at all to take ota-updates.
I feel the same. The first phone I don't need to root. Well, I had S7 Edge before and it wasn't rooted because I didn't want to lost warranty although I was desperate for root access. OP6 is so close to my ideal phone! The only thing is camera quality (waiting for Pexel cam app) and speaker placement.
Everytime I got a new phone the first thing I always did was unlocking and rooting right after unboxing.
But oneplus 6 is that one rare phone which I haven't unlocked and rooted. Its been 33 days.
Everything works so flawlessly that root not needed till now. However I will root it someday only for 2 reasons. Titanium backups and Viper4android.
Rest everything is perfectly fine so yeah this is my first non rooted phone.

Same, the most important reason why I still root my phones is basically just the Titanium backup (not all apps have backup options for their data). Well, also for Viper4Android and Adaway is nice too and Substratum, even tho rooting isn't necessary for it anymore, but it makes it easier I guess.

I received my OP6 and held off rooting because of the confusion over the dual partitions. I used the phone unrooted and it was great. I kept following the forums because I'm a rootaholic I've rooted everything I ever owned but was unsure about the OP6. After reading quite a bit I unlocked my Bootloader and rooted my phone I ran the stock rom rooted for a week which was great. My previous OP5 ran xXx NoLimits Rom and I loved it. I ended up Flashing xXx NoLimits 2.2 on my OP6 and am absolutely loving it, It's Stable, Smooth, and Fast has everything I love in a Custom Rom.
I share the same experience with OP. I don't feel the need for rooting the OP6. It is smooth since day 1 I've acquired this phone.
Btw, thanks to those who share ad blocking apps. They are worth checking.
One of the main reasons I bought Pocophone is due to XDA support. Never have I used a smartphone without unlock and root.
I could not wait for trying all those roms and kernels out there. I used all those Magisk and Xposed modules. Always trying many tweaks and tools. It was more of an addiction.
But using Pocophone a few days changed my mind. It is fast, smooth and battery lasts long without applying tons of tweaks. MIUI is great as well. It offers solid app controlling features. I have used tons of roms and do not see the need for replacing MIUI. Why use others when MIUI is very decent?
I know I can still root it, tweak it, make it better but I do not see the point as it is already superb. If it weren't those banking apps, I might have decided to unlock & root just for the sake of it but what would be the point then? It would just cause unnecessary complications with banking apps.
So I decided to use it as it is. Not even unlock. But man, it sure feels strange as I am new to this.
Same here, I used to geek around with my previous Oneplus phone, but with this Pocophone I've also decided to keep it as it is, and try to use it as long I as can, and only when they will stop updating it, then I'll look around for some ROM with newer Android version, but for now l'm fine with the MIUI ROM and the Gcam app
It all depends on your usage.
If you want privacy you have to root and install a custom ROM.
But if you like getting spied 24h from many companies at once, then you can stay as you want.
What to say ... if you're happy, that's what matters
I am using MIUI with few modifications ([ROM] [PIE 9.0] [MIUI] AMBASADII POCOPHONE F1 [v1.5.2] [03.02.2019]) is the beta version of the official MIUI rom, I use modified kernel(Sphynx) to get access to my external HDDs, I have no problems with bank apps, whatsapp among others as others complain, so I'm happy and I own MIUI that I love very much, with the resources I need.

What's there to not get it? Banking apps detect unlock and root then FC. It is not specific to Poco F1 but with other phones I've used, the need for unlock & root was greater than losing functionality of banking apps periodically.
I used to root and custom ROM when I was young.
Now that I'm old. I just prefer stable official ROM.
Besides, custom ROM is a software cant make the processor , ram, storage , optimization improvement that's so great that deserve the mod.
If u want something better and faster , get the latest hardware .
Too many custom rom . U never know which 1 is good or stable till u try it all
Well this is new age
If you said were true, then why would there be robust custom development in the first place? Why would kids ask which kernel and rom reach 300k antutu with 12-hour battery life?
You should try if you are free. It's not like in the old days wherein rooting is hard and not as worth it as now. Plus, MIUI is a giant bloated spyware.
I know your feel bro.
My 72 hour wait is done, so I can now unlock. In fact, I could have done it over a day ago, but I've sort of just thought.. What's the point, do I really feel like doing this again?
I probably will unlock and maybe root eventually, but I'm currently on the fence right now. It used to be exciting when I was younger, but now I'm not really sure.

I would suggest that you try xiaomi.eu rom, It has all the the things that make miui good and removes the bad (system adds, etc) and adds some extra features only available in china versions of miui (AI preloading).
I am still on stock. I haven't used stock roms till now and this a new experience to me. The main thing i rooted in my earlier phones was to install a modified hosts file to block those adverts. Now I have AdGuard i do not feel the need for root. But still when the official support end I will root and go for custom rom .
Same thing happened to me, first with the Mi A2 and now with the poco which replaced that one. Haven't felt the need to even root them and doing it for the lols doesn't cut it anymore. You value your time more as you get older (and have less time to do meaningless crap like this) so I'd just rather have a phone that works. Every time I've gone into custom ROMs in the past they've never been quite stable, there's always been something or some annoying thing that has made me constantly switch between ROMs with all the bs that goes into that.

I use on-line banking apps as well that detect rooted phone so stop working.
Previous phones I've rooted and unlocked used custom roms and you spend more time updating configuring backing up than you do using it as a phone.

I use banking apps with custom rom, without any problems.
Good for you my banks block them and I've got better things to do with my life than trying to get round them blocking custom ROMs.
Thats exactly what i thought. Never had a MIUI phone before and i was impressed with how smooth and stable the miui skin is. but i said **** it and installed Pixel Experience. Never in my life ever again am i going to switch back to MIUI. You have to give one custom rom a shot. Trust me u wont regret it

What is so special about Pixel Experience compared MIUI?
I have used Pixel Experience with a different phone but did not find it interesting. I preferred other roms like AICP and RR.
For years I have rooted my phones, and have had just about all the OEM's at one time or another. Since I've had my Pixels, not so much. So I decided to Root my Pixel, and run a custom ROM for the weekend, and today, I had had enough, and went back to stock. It's just not for me anymore. I like for everything to work, and what I get from stock is just perfect for me. Why is everyone else still holding on?
I miss being a flash-a-holic lol. I would always flash alot of custom roms also and my fav was Pure Nexus. i'm currently stock and fine with it well i wanted to try Q so. I still wanted a Pure Pixel rom but it never happened.
I think pretty much the ability to properly backup and restore using Titanium Backup. Otherwise, I as well would be done with root. Sure would make the monthly updates easier...
I have always rooted my devices. From Nexus 6p, Pixel XL, Pixel 2XL, I never felt I needed to, they always ran great and did exactly what I needed. My favorite, including a 2 days battery was Pixel 2 XL.
However, with Pixel 3 XL, the battery, and now the lagging, has been a nightmare. It's like I am dealing with samsumg all over again, like it was with samsumgs, pockets pcs, etc...
I was about to root and flash a custom until I saw your post... which means, not even the custom roms will fix this horrible phone... thats sad... I always buy my pixels on launch date, but I will eagerly wait for the next one, but only buy it 3 or 4 months later, if I buy it. For now, I am now researching between the latest samsung, OPO and Huawei to replace my P3XL, I really can't take it anymore. What a waste of money in this phone, and is not even worth half of what I paid now....
I use a custom rom for customization (changing statusbar color, accent colors, customize reboot menu, change statusbar icons, etc). Use root so I can disable navbar and use pie controls, use tasker and other apps properly, enable fingerprint pay where it is not allowed, and many other things.
I admit on stock you can use tulsadiver's mods to change most of the things a custom rom does, but you have to redo it on every update.
Stock with root and ElememtalX kernel for the extra high brightness mode. Need it because I mount my phone to the handlebars of my motorcycle for Nav. It's ok without it, but so much better with it.
I held off for years before putting a custom ROM on my Pixels, but I finally relented because of some lag on my 3XL. Now I'm running the latest AOSiP with Kirisakura kernel, and everything works beautifully and better than stock. Those of you who are having issues and have nothing to lose should definitely try a custom ROM. I haven't yet found anything that doesn't function better than stock. It's been totally stable and fully functional for me. With better performance and more features, of course.
There are still a couple reasons that keep me flashing custom. Not as many as there used to be. I still enjoy it though. Just like switching Linux Distros. I do it when I'm bored. It's fun.
For me. It's roms. Kernels. Titanium. And ad blockers.
There are lots of reasons to still root. But to each there own.
What finally drove me away from custom ROMs is that devs would stop supporting my device as soon as a new flashier, newer, c00l3r device came out. Basic bugs wouldn't get fixed. They'd be switching forums every few months (XDA? Telegram? Google+?). I'd donate $100 and a month later my favorite features would stop working or be dropped.
In short, lack of long term (6-9 months "long term"?) basic stability in favor chasing the latest new toy. I get it, it's their free time, but that's why I donated, and this is why I left.
This is the first Android device I've had I've kept stock with exception to rooting and a few Magisk modules like ViPER4Android. Other than that, I have to admit I am pretty content with the stock experience.
After almost 3 years (starting with the OG PIxel and XL), I finally installed a custom ROM on the 3XL but left the 3 stock and rooted. I may go back to stock and rooted with Q coming. The biggest reason for me to quit swapping custom ROMs on these devices is that TWRP has really become nothing more than a zip flasher. Multiple slot issues and no real Nandroid functionality makes it so that a custom ROM just replaces stock if you are happy with it and support continues. The time to completely wipe and reconfigure after a custom install just isn't worth it more than once for me.
Data backs up fine on TWRP and restoring it gets back all your settings.
Ad-blocking, ad-blocking, and ad-blocking.
I just can't use a phone that shows adverts - they p1ss me off no end. Not only the fact they take up half the screen, and steal bandwidth, but the tracking is basically illegal but still done relentlessly.

Active edge, and Pixel stand doesn't work as it should. Also with all the custom ROM's I flashed they would just reboot randomly.

I get that. It's one of the reasons that got me into it in the first place.

Honestly that's actually one of the advantages of still Rooting. Getting the latest software on a device that is no longer supported.

Both features work great in the latest AOSiP build. Also haven't had any random reboots.

That only works on wifi right? On mobile data it uses your providers DNS?
