So anyone understand what this article is talking about?
http://www.softwaredownloadsguide.com/2011/02/htc-inspire-4g-htc-inspire-4g-on-att-release-date/
Here is the part I am curious about:
AT&T will charge monthly data plans for the HTC Inspire 4G will price $15 for 200MB of data and $25 per month for 2GB data plan. Data can be use through Hotspot capacity from Datapro Tethering plan for the user data allowance. HTC Inspire 4G will be available on AT&T stores and online from 13th February at price $99.99 with two years contract.

So does this mean that people with unlimited plans at $30 a month should be ok to tether their laptops via wifi?
No, you need a data pro plan with tethering. $45 for 4gb of data.
so i wonder if there will be a way around that cause i currently have a unlimited data plan and really don't want to pay for the tethering plan (have been using WMWifirouter for WM 6.5). Any ideas to help me out being a cheepskate!?

PDA.Net is an option since you have an unlimited plan.
once we get root (assuming we do) are there other tethering options (you will have to pardon me as i am still new to android). When i did searches there is some material on the subject but from what i understand the phone has to be rooted for these to work.

Yes once you root your phone you will have other options to choose from such as Android Wifi tether.
thanks.. now if the predictions continue at the same rate of what i continue to read the phone will be rooted before i ever get it home from the store
PDA.net is wired tethering, not a wifi hotspot
Ya I have the $30 unlimited data with AT&T. Using the HD2 Australian version (android OS) I am able to use the Wi-Fi Hotspot app, only problem is where I live they don't use 850 for 3G so I only have EDGE. I am really looking forward to what can be done with the Inspire, because having such an amazing phone kind of sucks with such slow data speeds.
This is something I am very interested in also. I am assuming the wifi tethering that ATT is talking about it the MobileAP that is already present on damn near every 2.2 rom. I heard that they are going to have a setting that will let ATT control whether your INSPIRE 4g will be able to use this feature. I am on the unlimited plan now with my craptivate and was just thinking about buying it off contract and dropping my sim in. does anyone think that this might be an issue?
My only worry is that ATT tries to screw you in almost every way possible if they think they can make more money off you. Technically we shouldn't have to pay for tethering IMHO we are already paying for the data why should it matter how or on what device we use it on??

I agree, although it seems like once they get it rooted we will be able to put our own tethering app on it and avoid having to pay for a ridiculous plan. I used WMWiFi Router on my incite and HTC's tethering on the windows mobile HD2 and now the WiFi Hotspot app on Android on the HD2 all on ATT with an unlimited data plan without tethering.
I'm on T-Mobile US and tethering have been working fine for me without paying for the extra tethering fee on my Nexus 4. I can do wifi and bluetooth tether to ipad, nexus 7, and a laptop with user agent switching. Got my Nexus 5 today and nothing works, I keep on getting the upsell page even after playing around with different APN settings. Put my sim back in my N4 everything works. Anyone experiencing the same issue? Maybe Google changed something in KitKat.

What T-Mobile plan do you have?
Supposedly they are giving free wifi hotspot access with nearly all of their plans now, even prepaid.
Perhaps you need to check your APN or register the imei # somehow with T-Mobile.
I had to upgrade/downgrade myself today cause I was using a $10 unlimited web plan with my galaxy nexus, but when I tried to use the fast.-t-mobile.com APN (for LTE access) I got the upsell page as well, no data at all.
What I went ahead and did was sign up for the $30 prepaid plan (100 mins 5gb data) and transferred my number over etc, worked great. I had a micro sim activation kit though, which asked for IMEI number etc. Supposedly I will have wifi hotspot access @ 100mb/month but I haven't tested it yet.

Blocked for me as well. I'm on a post-paid plan. 1000 minutes and unlimited data. I mainly use the tethering with my iPad. Works with Nexus 4, but not with the Nexus 5.
I may be sending the 5 back, as this is a major issue for me.

I'm on old grandfather plan with prefer android unlimited web. I think this is something new with 4.4, maybe a custom ROM will fix it.

Maybe, but I don't think you will get LTE with that plan, T-mobile seems to be blocking it with the fast.t-mobile.com APN.
At any rate, I've already switched to the $30 plan, and its working fine (haven't tested wifi hotspot yet though)

Not exactly sure which plan you have but I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is now including free wifi hotspot/tethering for free now. How much monthly data allowed depends on your plan.
If they are giving it to prepaid folks there is no reason why you shouldn't be getting it.
If you install the T-Mobile My account app from the play store see if it shows "mobile hotspot balance". If not I would call them as inquire about it. Don't return it too quickly...

Ok I remember reading you need to have one of their "Simple Choice" plans to get the free mobile hotspot. You might have to change your plan, not sure if it will cost you more to do so though...
I'm assuming the plan you have now is unlimited, and you don't want to switch to the 2.5gb plan, and if you go up to unlimited its probably going to cost you more than you are paying now...

Only their new plans offer free wifi hotspot. The issue is I don't think it's my plan, if I put my sim back into my N4 tethering works fine.

I've used tethering with my Value Plan (1000min/unlimited data) for over a year now. It just doesn't work with the Nexus 5, put the sim back in my Nexus 4 and it works fine. My plan didn't officially come with tethering. It worked fine with my iPad and android tablets. It would present the blocked message on my laptop. I was okay with that, since I didn't subscribe to an "official" tethering plan.
I don't know if this will be fixed with a custom rom, becuase it seems like it is at the core of KitKat. I also tried flashing the bare AOSP ROM, and tethering was blocked with that as well.
Also seeing the blocked tethering over here. On the $30 Tmobile plan and the Nexus 4 works perfectly tethering. Put the same sim into the Nexus 5 and it just redirects me to the sign in page for Tmobile. Hope this is fixed or this will be a massive negative towards this phone, probably even a deal breaker.

My doesn't officially comes with tethering either, but it always worked for tablets. On laptop I just change the user agent and it works fine. Have you look into any of the tethering apps? I have no idea if they're any better than the built in one.

You are seeing the redirect on your PC? In the past I noticed I had to change the user-agent on my PC's web browser to Mobile for it to let me past T-mobile's blocking.
Are you trying through a PC? Try tethering another mobile device like a tablet or phone and see if it works...

I'll try that in a minute. Either way, the chromebook was able to tether with the nexus 4 without problems every time.

I think it is a T-Mobile thing, as I see other people talking about successfully tethering their nexus 5 all over the place. Might just be a small subset of T-Mobile users. Either way its very annoying. Wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to use a different app to tether, but I don't even know if that would or could work.

You have to figure only a small subset of users have received theirs yet, and an even tinier subset of them even care about tethering, and even a smaller subset of then have even tried it yet. Every Nexus device is a disaster until you let it settle in for a week or two and let the wrinkles settle out.
Change 4g data plan
There's a new 4g data plan which includes 2.5GB hotspot data. You still get unlimited phone data for the same price as before. $20/mo.
I managed to lose my beloved Pixel XL at a bar last week. I had managed to get in early and get a phone where I could unlock the bootloader and all was great, but now I seem to be boned... My phone came with 7.1.1 installed and the option for OEM unlocking is grayed out. Unfortunately I have to go to the Verizon store to get a replacement SIM card, but I'm really worried about my ability to tether. I'm on a grandfathered unlimited plan that I use to tether my work laptop, will I be able to tether like I did on my old Pixel XL, or will I be stuck buying a phone from Google to get this function back?
Thanks.
You are out of luck. Check into the new unlimited data plan, it allows tethering. It might be a better way to go for you. I don't know the details, just an idea.

Thanks, but I have zero interest in letting go of my TRUE unlimited plan, I've already used 35GB this month...
were you ever able to get tethering to work on old grandfathered unlimited?
Hello I'm considering getting this phone. I researched and found that this phone model 1917 is the right one for Verizon it has all its LTE bands and I could give a **** about Wi-Fi calling or visual voicemail or video calling I have apps for that. My big question is about the hot spot for people using this phone on Verizon.
Do you have to do anything to get your hotspot to work properly the reason I don't buy phones from Verizon is I'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan meaning I don't get throttled after using a certain amount of data it's only $10 more a month than their so-called unlimited plan offered now.
If I switch to a Verizon brand phone they will make me sign up with dere new data plan which only offers 30 gigabytes a month and I would burn through that inside of a couple days.
This is the reason I've been sticking with my HTC u12 plus. The native hotspot on this international phone works right out of the box since it's not Verizon limited software. I just wondered does the hotspot work flawlessly?

HI,
I have a 7 Pro but I am on the newest plans; Get More Unlimited.
I got rid of my grandfathered plan because there was no benefit for me and the new ones are cheaper.
There is a provisioning check on some phones. If you root you can bypass the check.
I have the original unlimited plan, like you, and hotspot worked just fine. It worked fine with T-Mobile firmware and global, so no worries at all.
No issues with Verizon hotspot here. Just got CDMA-less enabled on my line and haven't had any service issues whatsoever
Editing the build prop on my old Pixel 3xl worked great for tethering with the native hot spot, but I'm not seeing anything similar for the 7. Is there a newer or better way to hide the data usage from Verizon that I'm not seeing?
I am using this on old grandfathered data plan (true unlimited)

No sure if this is allowed, please remove if not. I have the PP7 Unlocked, rooted, magisk, zygisk and lsposed on an At&t unlimited elite plan. Is there a way to add "Share VPNs to clients" option to a rooted PP7 like on crDroid? I am coming...

that's amazing! can't believe you guys are still on that grandfather (more like great-great-great grandfather) unlimited plan!
I originally had it too on my LG Voyager when it was $30 unlimited and kept it throughout my 3 Motorola Droids -- so I originally had the plan from '07 and tried to hold on to it until '15)! But when Verizon kept raising it more and more incrementally to $50+, it wasn't worth paying all that much if I wasn't going to be using up to 60+GB at least (per line)...and then they friggin brought back unlimited but with restrictions and "priority" only up to the first whatever-GB (that's why I stay in regular alotted GB with carryover, at least it's not throttled)....
I hated the small print that they could keep unlimited and not throttle it, but it didn't say anything about not increasing the price for the grandfathered plan either...
Still amazing you guys are still on something that started around '07!

I'm about to dump it finally. I have had this line since 01 or 02 and they just keep getting worse. It's like each additional year of loyalty makes them try harder at being terrible .
For some reason Dish is up on a tower across from my business and their 5g has been working pretty decent for the last 2 months. And I have to be about the only person using it as there is nothing else around there except vehicle traffic. So I'll probably give it another month and see if anything goes wrong with Dish and then drop Verizon once and for all.
I have the Dish service for free for the next 21 months, so that will help offset some of the overpriced Verizon billing for the last two decades.

Best way is to use the magisk module for tethering bypass. Or rooted app VPN tether.
Yup, use the Magisk module to enable tethering does the same thing is the build prop edit. I used it no problem on the OG unlimited data plan with Verizon.
Don't you have Unlimited contracts in America, I pay 60€ a month for mine in Germany (from Telekom).
Or what is the problem here with tethering

Tethering is not unlimited here. I think the highest cap on a consumer plan is 40 or 50GB right now unless you get Visible which is unlimited but throttled to 5Mbps.

Our networks couldn't handle that in a lot of places. Sometimes when the network is busy here, I'm lucky to be able to load a webpage.
