Question Hot spot or Tether with older unlimited data plan - Google Pixel 7 Pro

Editing the build prop on my old Pixel 3xl worked great for tethering with the native hot spot, but I'm not seeing anything similar for the 7. Is there a newer or better way to hide the data usage from Verizon that I'm not seeing?

I am using this on old grandfathered data plan (true unlimited)
At&t Hotspot / Tethering
No sure if this is allowed, please remove if not. I have the PP7 Unlocked, rooted, magisk, zygisk and lsposed on an At&t unlimited elite plan. Is there a way to add "Share VPNs to clients" option to a rooted PP7 like on crDroid? I am coming...

that's amazing! can't believe you guys are still on that grandfather (more like great-great-great grandfather) unlimited plan!
I originally had it too on my LG Voyager when it was $30 unlimited and kept it throughout my 3 Motorola Droids -- so I originally had the plan from '07 and tried to hold on to it until '15)! But when Verizon kept raising it more and more incrementally to $50+, it wasn't worth paying all that much if I wasn't going to be using up to 60+GB at least (per line)...and then they friggin brought back unlimited but with restrictions and "priority" only up to the first whatever-GB (that's why I stay in regular alotted GB with carryover, at least it's not throttled)....
I hated the small print that they could keep unlimited and not throttle it, but it didn't say anything about not increasing the price for the grandfathered plan either...
Still amazing you guys are still on something that started around '07!

Did you get an email from Verizon when you pop the sim in asking you to add a hot spot package?

I'm about to dump it finally. I have had this line since 01 or 02 and they just keep getting worse. It's like each additional year of loyalty makes them try harder at being terrible .
For some reason Dish is up on a tower across from my business and their 5g has been working pretty decent for the last 2 months. And I have to be about the only person using it as there is nothing else around there except vehicle traffic. So I'll probably give it another month and see if anything goes wrong with Dish and then drop Verizon once and for all.
I have the Dish service for free for the next 21 months, so that will help offset some of the overpriced Verizon billing for the last two decades.

I'm with you....I got my line in '02....it really kinda feels/means something sticking to it for so long.... But if one gets too complacent and not able to recognize a better deal, it's unfortunate; I admire you being able to have a better option and/or being able to break away...

No I did not. I have the unlocked version and did remove all verizon stuff that it tried to install right away

Best way is to use the magisk module for tethering bypass. Or rooted app VPN tether.

Yup, use the Magisk module to enable tethering does the same thing is the build prop edit. I used it no problem on the OG unlimited data plan with Verizon.

Don't you have Unlimited contracts in America, I pay 60€ a month for mine in Germany (from Telekom).
Or what is the problem here with tethering

Tethering is not unlimited here. I think the highest cap on a consumer plan is 40 or 50GB right now unless you get Visible which is unlimited but throttled to 5Mbps.

Our networks couldn't handle that in a lot of places. Sometimes when the network is busy here, I'm lucky to be able to load a webpage.

Root the phone, VPN Hotspot from playstore... Works like charm

Tiered data coming 6/26...?

My VZW source told me about a new Point-of-Sale system being implemented for corporate Verizon stores (a nationwide rollout as far as I know, but I could be wrong on that assumption). Regardless, this new POS system goes live June 26th. In the online training for the new POS system, Verizon Employees saw some mention given to new calling plans + tiered data implementation coming at the same time as the new POS system rollout.
What I was told is this: calling plans are being renamed, probably changed (in terms of text/voice minute allowance, price, inclusion [or not] of data, etc.) FOR SURE the plans are being renamed, and it's not a far stretch of the imagination to think that this is the perfect time for VZW to roll out new data plans. The reason for that thought is the fact that VZW has been talking about a summer debut for tiered data plans for a while now. Well, summer is here... so it's about time for this to happen.
No specific details have been given at this time, likely no one will know much until the day before or day of the announcement. But at least we have a time frame for this. If there is going to be an end of unlimited data, I predict it will come with the roll out of new calling plans.
Also, this makes sense in light of the July 6th extended tethering promotion. In the event someone wants to keep tethering after July 6th on their Thunderbolt, it will require a data plan change (adding a paid monthly tethering plan). This is one way for Verizon to force people into the new calling plans. If they are capping data or upping prices for LTE/4G devices (or across the board for all devices - who knows?), this is a great way for Verizon to steal people away from their unlimited data plans. You want tethering? OK. Change your plan to one of our "new" plans with tiered (capped) data and you can have tethering!
I think this "free" tethering was a cold, money grubbing calculation from the beginning. I digress...
Anyway, just passing along what I heard today. Anyone else hear anything similar to this today? I could have some details wrong, and though this is clearly just speculation, I don't want to obfuscate the truth if someone has it on good authority something here isn't true or I have some of the details a little wrong.

As for tiered data, they can pry my unlimited 4G from my cold, lifeless hands. Or I'm going to Sprint
That link is broken for me. Was the story about the issues with the Charge's hotspot being unreliable? I know the previous extension was supposedly because of the 24 hour EHRPD network outage that affected so many Thunderbolt users.

Sorry, it worked for me earlier today I just assumed it still worked..
It was something about how the Free Press filed a complaint with the FCC saying that Verizon shouldn't be allowed to tell us how to use our data, etc and that the conditions with which the 700 mhz spectrum was bought somewhat prevent Verizon from charging for it.
And no, but the Charge did receive an update a few days ago fixing their hotspot.
Ah, I forgot about the free press filing. Good to know the Charge was updated, too.

For a vast majority of users have a tiered plan with bucket data (tethering included) would actually be a good thing. For alot of users who frequent this, and other, forums it would not. If the prices are not totally outrageous, ie $20/GB, I see no problem with VZW implimenting a tiered system that included tethering. Its for users like many of us on XDA that it will be a problem, those who regularly go over 2, 3, 4, 5 etc GB a month by constantly flashing, downloading and redownloading apps and the power tetherers (those who play Xbox etc while tethered). I know people who barely hit 500 megs a month on their data plans, so something along the lines of 1GB for a reasonable price would be perfect for them.

My wife was hitting .17 gb with her old blackberry and now uses about 3 gb with my old Droid X, I used 6-8 on the X and 8-10 on the Thunderbolt on average, and have went up to 16 gb in one month on the X. I have never tethered. Maybe the shared data will even out prices if they don't grandfather us in (after the T-bolt)
I really think that until they announce plans/prices for the tiered system people are just over reacting to it. Who knows, it might actually be a good thing for them to roll it out. Yeah yeah yeah i know "but we haz unlimited" thats well and good. but if your like me and have more than one smart phone line with it, and one of those lines using 200 megs a month...well its not worth it to have unlimited. I would rather have a small tiered plan for that, or hell even a family data plan with bucket data alotment. But we all know how people are, they have to have their unlimited data plan no matter what, even if they are only using 100 megs.
There is already a $15 plan, and its been around for awhile, for all the people using very little data

Would you like to save $20/month?

According to T-Mobile support (I just got off the line with them) and this article from phandroid.com, effective January 25, 2012, T-Mobile is throwing in the "tethering plan" (which is now called SmartPhone Mobile Hotspot) and the MobileLife Album Plus plan for people who upgrade their data plans... It will save you $20/month! Go get it!
How's this any better than the free tethering/hot spot options we get in the custom ROMs?
Good question... I don't know is my answer.

Hmmm... That's a good question. Do you mean that I have been paying $14 for tethering unnecessarily??
As for the remaining $6, I suppose that is for the MobileLife Album Plus service (which I also wasn't aware of and don't need or use)...
For me, I had been paying both the tethering fee and the 5GB fee... when I called to complain (because of the new deal being offered), they dropped my tethering fee (re-imbursing me) AND provided (the service which I don't use/care about) MobileLife Album Plus.
In short, my bill was reduced by $14.
How can this be good for you?
Well, I don't know. Like sooooo... many other things, I simply cannot answer that one.

Look into it more. T-Mobile mentioned it to me and I got the impression from what the guy explained to me that having the tethering plan counted data differently. Meaning when tethering you are not using up the 5 gig 'limit' before slowdown that you have on your phone. Which would obviously be beneficial because when tethering to your computer you hit that data cap pretty fin quickly.
Hotspot is built into the stock rom, so I never thought twice about it... never get billed for it, but have certainly used it.
As for the 5GB plan they push you into, if you don't use it you can get them to drop you to the two gig.
I am almost always around wireless, so any DLing I do is through wireless, I haven't hit 2gig even in the past 11 months on this phone.
I'm on a very old MyFaves 'special' plan that I don't plan to 'upgrade' from unless they force it, the only thing they have ever changed is forced me to add the 4G data plan at $30 last year, which I got them to drop to the 2gb plan at $15 I think it is now..

I am on unlimited everything... though they cap you a 5 gigs then slow you way down. I have hit it and it is a b*tch! Which was my point with what the op said... from what I understand your tethering won't count towards your mobile data...

Yes, I was on unlimited everything... but started my plan 9 months back under a 2GB. Now, when I had signed up (having been used to another plan which I have from a different provider), I had thought "unlimited" meant just that. But during my 2nd month, I went over... and received text messages informing me that I would be throttled... and life was so unfair.
But, I called them up and added on the 5GB limit. (I had initiated my plan with tethering...) The point of this post was simply to alert those who (like myself) are paying at an older rate... that they may be able to reduce their bill by roughly $20.
I complain when my vendors (carriers, manufacturers, providers, etc.) cause me pain... I try to be equally willing to give kudos when warranted. In this case TMO warranted my kudos for working with me... and I was simply alerting others who may find themselves in the same situation... that they might get a free lunch out of the deal.

[Q] how to fake skyrocket as a non-smart phone?

I have unlimited $10 data plan for non smart phones. When I got my skyrocket I used it with that "non-smart phone sim card" and it worked, I even disabled the carried detection and used tethering and worked flawlessly. I updated the phone to the first leaked ICS and continued to do the same without issues. When I updated it to the second leak last month, AT&T detected it as smart phone and changed the data plan to 3GB LTE for $30. I didn't root, disable the carrier detection or add anything special, just the "stock leak ICS"
I've been having the phone for almost 6 months. Any idea what could be the reason it was detected and how to prevent that?
I don't mind paying the $30 but I use my phone to stream video, games and so many things that 3GB or even 5GB won't be enough for me.
It's not too difficult for AT&T to detect when a device on a non-smartphone plan is using more than about 500KB of data per month.

If they're not capping it, it's for one of two reasons.
1. The service is slow as balls, like T-Mobile's "unlimited" where you get 4G speeds for x-amount of data, and then unlimited access at the speed of molasses.
or
2. You're paying an arm and a leg for data.
I read other threads where people on LTE plans were getting Throttled and I know the solution is just changing the Apn to a Hsdpa Apn instead of LTE, but I'm not sure how to beat this one. You might try this solution but you are still going to use the 3gbs just a little slower. And for the record(To the people who feel it's right to pay twice or even 3x for internet when intending to tether, lmao)we get robbed enough by these corporations like AT&T & Verizon so if you can beat them at their own games then more power to you my friend. Just keep looking for the answer. There may be a way Good luck
Edit** I just figured out that a skyrocket is s galaxy s2(lol). Now your thread is much more amazing to me. How the hell were you on a $10 unlimited internet plan with a higher-end android? I thought the other phones used wap browsing & connected to apn that way?? Good job. Maybe you could pm me the apn config.

Its not a matter of IF but WHEN... they run serial number sweeps an put any smartphone on correct plan. You disable carrier check, an they look at abnormal use on certain data plans.... Randal Stevenson said a few weeks ago in an interview that when consumers use too much bandwidth, he has to invest capitol into rebuilding the network. The more money the company spends, the more eager they will be to look for means to make it back i.e. raising everyone's costs... so kudos to the 2% of folks that ruin it for the people that stay within reason!

Keep ATT unlimited data or switch to unlimited ATT+direcTV??!

So I've had the grandfathered unlimited data a LONG time but now there is a possible better option.
I have four lines on my account, only I have unlimited data. The recent DirecTV deal is something like ~$150 for four lines of unlimited everything (same 22gb/mo data shared before some sort of throttle) as long as you have a DirecTV account.
The net difference is about $140/mo cheaper for me and everyone gets 'unlimited' data. My parents will probably carry their DirecTV account for at least another 10yrs...
I'm a serious power user and usually use about 30-50gb/mo. I don't even notice the slow down with what I do.
Worth sacrificing the grandfathered personal unlimited which is now $35? I'm not sure I know all the details so I ask here. Thank you!

Did you switch to the new Unlimited Data plan with Directv
If yes where you able to use rooting or foxfi to tether. They offer no tethering plan with the new unlimited. I was wondering if there is a workaround.

Yes I did switch to the Directv unlimited and I've never even considered a tethering plan. It's always worked and I get the occasional text message informing me that tethering plans exist. With the new directv plan I haven't gotten a single text or letter about it. I only use android things so it's pretty easy to get some utility that does what I need. I'm currently on the OnePlus Three which does tethering default as part of the OS. I don't use it a lot, but it's extremely useful when I need it. The past month I've been really over using it however. It's usually faster than wired net anyways.

The ATT rep told me, that I cant add tethering option to the new Unlimited plan even if I want to pay for it. But you are telling me that hotspot just works
So ATT does not block third party WIFI hotspot tethering or if it is built into the OS with the new unlimited data plan. Have you tried this on other android phones or just the One plus.
I am thinking of switching to ATT because of this plan, but the Hotspot is must for me.

So ATT does not block third party WIFI hotspot tethering or if it is built into the OS with the new unlimited data plan. Have you tried this on other android phones or just the One plus.
I am thinking of switching to ATT because of this plan, but the Hotspot is must for me.

I've only had the oneplus 3 on the new plan but I can tell you I'm on USB tether right now and it's 100% flawless. I tested wifi too but as we all know, wifi just isn't as snappy as a wire. lemme test it on various devices for you later today. The wifi hotspot, not the tethering ability...bit too lazy for that, sorry.

That would be great, really appreciate it. I mainly need the wifi Hotspot. Have you been going over the 22GB throttle limit, if so are they slowing you down.

Even on the previous unlimited plan they would throttle you after only 5gb. I pass 22gb in the first two weeks every month. Sometimes in the first week. I don't even notice anymore if it's slow or fast. I'm sure it's being throttled but it's still fast 'enough' for me not to care. I was really skeptical of the plan but it's actually working out pretty well and it's FAR cheaper than I ever expected. Especially if you're getting your own phones...the oneplus 3 is excellent.

t-mobile unlimited data promo?

Anyone see this? Unlimited at no extra cost. I can't find anything where it says how long it's no additional cost. Anybody have any more info?

I'm not positive but I believe that's for the people that have the unlimited plan. They say to have the 10gb hotspot you have to enable it first.
Im on the 2GB plan, but seem this. I went ahead and changed to the "unlimited" but I have to wait until my next cycle to see the change. I'll guess I'll find out in a week.
This is a legit promotion they are having in order to counter Verizon's new unlimited plan. This plan includes everything unlimited, 480p/ 720p video streaming (no longer 360p but 720p 60 fps gets throttled, 10 GB of 4G hotspot tethering (then throttles to 3/2G) and includes data overseas (not at sea) and texting on planes through wifi. This costs altogether $75 but with autopay, goes down to $70; I did this in person at a kiosk so I knew I wouldn't mess it up. It's a great deal and this is also available with the 2 for $100 and other T-Mobile one plans.
I'm currently on the simple choice 2gb plan. But seen I could upgrade to unlimited at no additional cost. Just thought that it was odd.

You get 10gb for LTE hotspot or usb tethering. But you do need to enable that option which is free. After the 10gb you get slowed to 3g speed. That's only for the hotspot and tethering. I pulled the trigger and switched last week. Today we finally paid off both the S7s we had financed. T-Mobile emailed me telling me my new bill will be $158.12 That's for 4 phones. I was on the 2 gb plan. As of today my oldest son who now lives an hour away has used 6gb and not been slowed down yet. So apparently the new plan kicked in immediatly.

what was the verdict with the unlimited data promo? I see it as an option on my account as well and curious how it worked for you.

Sorry I don't recall the exact outcome of that, but I know I still only had 2gb of lte. A couple months later I went to the unlimited all in.
