Pixel 2 2-year Warranty - Enough or is Accident Protection Recommended - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

First-time Google Phone owner here. It is both comforting and concerning to see that Google extended their standard warranty for the Google Pixel 2 and 2XL from 1- to 2 years. Can someone confirm that that only covers defects. Would the "bending" issue (i.e. the body cracks at antenna line) be covered by this if under normal use (e.g. from being in a pocket)? My concern is whether this warranty covers most of what would be expected with this phone or whether accident protection (insurance) is recommended. I've never cracked a screen or had a phone break out of warranty (there...now Murphy's Law will apply to me but currently have Verizon insurance activated. Just curious on thoughts on whether I'm throwing my money away and whether Nexus and Pixel 1's have turned out to be durable/reliable phones.

I am wondering the exact same thing with Verizon, the 7 dollar a month Asurion covers accidental with lost and theft but no post warranty like the 9 dollar amount but Google covers for 2 years so why pay and extra 50 over the 2 years.

I have the Pixel 2 and have dropped mine a number of times accidently. Forturnatly nothing bad has happened. Maybe its luck, maybe they're tough. Having said that, I'm paranoid, so I have insurance!

It's fairly simple math. Take the amount you pay in phone insurance (per month) and multiply it by the length of time you plan on owning the device. Add in any deductibles for repair and compare that total to these two scenarios:
1. Is that total enough to purchase a decent replacement phone if yours breaks?
2. Is that total (minus the deductible) low enough for you to be at peace with paying that amount for essentially nothing in return IF your phone never breaks?
If the answer is yes to the first question or no to the second question, then don't buy the insurance.

Squaretrade Warranty for Nexus One

Just as a consideration, I thought I'd throw this out there. I was mildly concerned when I ordered a Nexus about the lack of Asurion insurance on T-Mobile. Checked with Squaretrade, since I have used them on other electronics purchases, and was very pleased to find they have a specific plan for the Nexus One. For $115 (special atm) you get a full 2 yr replacement or repair warranty for a one time premium with an at need $50 deductible. Normal failures like battery failure are not subject to deductible. Only con is they don't cover loss, you have to be able to send them back something broken. Being as I was paying about $8 a month for insurance on my G1 before, with a $150 deductible, a little quick math shows an amazing difference. My experiences with Squaretrade in the past have been wonderful, and I would recommend giving them a look.

t-mobile gave me insurance through Asurion....
This is old news. Tmobile does cover the nexus one. Use search.
Dose it cover if I unlock the boot loader? I know Google (HTC) voids the warranty the second you do that. I want to be able to install Cyanogen on my Nexus One without the worry of not having a warranty. I have the G1 now and have had it for about a year now and I havent had any problems with it, but I've heard of people's N1's on at&t the screen is messed up look here.

no it dont cover unlocked bootloader. it covers electrical, lost or stolen. worst comes to worst you just file stolen thru your insurance and buy a new one from them for $130 bucks. or should i say refurbished not new.
Lol. Well when I bought mine the T-mobile reps I talked to didn't really know what a Nexus One even was. I was however told that insurance through them was unavailable to me because the phone was sold through Google. Bad information or miscommunication is irrelevant, the SquareTrade Warranty is a far cheaper way to go. Though it doesn't cover loss, I spoke to them before buying it and was told in clear language that any claim due to unit damage from dropping, water, etc. was covered regardless of bootloader being unlocked. This would only be an issue with them if there was no physical damage to the unit. I'm not worried about bricking it, I'm worried about taking it with me when I go drinking. lol. Things tend to get run over.
It's also be covered in other threads that you can insure the phone through a "personal items" policy with your regular (auto) insurance provider. I have mine through State Farm. It's $30 a year with no deductible and they could give a flip if it's rooted or not. You just call them up and say my stuffs broken/lost and they send you a check to replace your phone. So, SquareTrade isn't the way to go either.

Any idea if you can purchase that type of insurance from State Farm without having another policy with them?

To clarify:
The Assurian policy doesn't cover unlocked bootloaders, only defect, theft and loss.
The Squaretrade policy (at least the one I bought for my N1) covers defect and accidental damage, and is agnostic to bootloader status (meaning they don't care if you unlock it).

Not 100% sure, but I think you can because my policy is not tied to any of my other policies. It's a standalone and the reasoning for it is, it you need to use it, it won't affect your regular insurance rates
If you have auto insurance, you should be able to get coverage through them. You might get better rates by having an existing policy too.
Just give any State Farm rep a call to find out and let us know what they tell you if you don't mind.

Helpful. I was originally told by the T-mo rep that Asurion wouldn't cover me, but I ordered on release day. lol. As for theft or loss, not possible. I will stick with Squaretrade and hope I never have to use it.
I'll cave in. Since I spent $529 for this phone, spending an additional $120 couldn't hurt to protect against damages. If I drop it and the screen cracks, they replace it reguardless correct? I just had a bad luck day, had phone in my basketball shorts with a clear hard case on it, while playing it fell out. Then when I got out of my car I forgot my phone was on my lap so down it goes again with the case. There are scratch marks on the bottom and top of the phone but doesn't bother me. It worries me that in the near future I might actually drop it by accident and it will be damaged. The 3rd time I dropped it, was when I went to put it in my newly purchased dock. So I've finished my bad luck for the day (hopefully)
*wonders why people will spend MORE for a LESSER insurance policy.

[Q] Phone - Warranty

It has been just 8 days for my phone so far. All is good, I am probably inclining to keep it...
I am wondering if it is worthwhile to purchase any insurance coverage for the phone.
Sprint offers TEP program wherein I need to pay $8 per month. If something happens, I will need to shell out a $100 deductible over the phone replacement.
I was checking squaretrade.com. They are offering a warranty for $124 which states the following:
Coverage Details
2 years of coverage: The SquareTrade Smartphone warranty covers your Smartphone for up to 2 years, starting on the date of purchase.
Covered Issues: Both accidents (e.g., broken screen or other damage through drops AND liquid damage including full immersion) and out-of-warranty normal use failures (e.g., battery no longer charging or other hardware failures) are covered. We do not cover loss, theft, willful damage or damage occurring through gross misuse.
Deductible: There is a $50 deductible when claiming on an accident (e.g., drops, spills). There is no deductible for a normal use failure (e.g., power issue).
--------------
Does any one have any experience using either of the warranties? Is it really worth spending money?
Please share your thoughts.
i think it all depends on what phone you have.
if its expensive = yes
if its not = no
I f you lose phones constantly then yes. I have insurance on mine and it has paid for itself a couple of times. My friend got the same phone without warranty and one day lost it. Had to pay up $300 for the replacement.

assuming that you bought it at the price i saw for it ($99), i cant exactly say (but if i had to, id say a little expensive).
i wouldnt get the squaretrade warranty (paying more than the phones worth on warranty doesnt make sense)
i dont think a warranty is necessary (unless you are prone to accidents, or if you decide to mod your phone; if you are prone to accidents or if you do decide to mod your phone, then i would go with sprints program

But, a good question is Sprint TEP / Square trade?

The "insurance" at Best Buy is changing 9/1/13

I figured I place this tidbit of information here since I have a galaxy s4, but this will apply to other smartphones as well. For those who invest in insurance for their phones, it is changing at Best Buy. Currently, the Geek Squad Protection is a $10 monthly charge for Android/Windows/Blackberry ($15 for iPhones), no deductible, unlimited claims for two years, and it does not cover lost or stolen. Starting on 9/1/13 (Im 99% sure that's the date, which is around the corner lol) it will be $10 for smartphones (Android/Windows/BlackBerry/iPhones), $150 deductible, 3 claims for 24 months, and it will not cover lost or stolen.

Too many idiots bricking their phones and bringing them in for exchange / repair. Sure, occasionally there are legitimate claims, but with the release of MF3 and the people that are too lazy to read and learn, the number of claims is most likely going through the roof. If it continues, square trade will be the next to change their terms. It's bad when people with legitimate claims have to be hassled by AT&T, Samsung, Best buy, etc...just because people are committing fraud so frequently.
To be fair, when MF3 was first pushed and people knew nothing about it, it was reasonable to expect some problems. However, the learning curve has been over for some time now and the excuses are done. If someone bricks with MF3 now (and they are not a DEV trying to make something happen to help everyone) there is absolutely no excuse. Developers bricking their phones working on unlocked bootloader exploits / methods might make up 1% of total claims. Legitimate claims might make up another 10%. The rest are people that are bricking their devices and then expecting insurance to pay for their ignorance. So thank you lazy idiots for making insurance more expensive for the rest of us.
I knew the unlimited claims was going to hurt them down the line. I have the 2 year outright protection since I get a discount. So I will still have the unlimited claims (which I will probably never use). However it does suck for those who truly need it though.

I shouldve said this in the original post. For those who have Best Buy's insurance as of 8/31/13 and before, you are unaffected. You still have the $0 deductible and unlimited claims.

It also looks like the $9.99 plan doesn't cover drops even with the $150 deductable.
You have to pay the $200 up front to get this coverage.

What's the difference in the standard and advanced plan? Best buy only lets you pick monthly or upfront.

This is my favorite. It's got to be a little broke I guess.
What if I dropped my cell phone walking to work?
Ouch! If you have our Advanced Geek Squad Protection Plan with accidental damage from handling coverage, it'll be covered. However, we don't cover units that fall from extreme heights such as decks, balconies and windows.

Interesting. I'll ask my manager about this. Since our emails didn't mention anything about standard and advanced plans. I'll have more info later tonight.
Edit:
So that page did catch my manager off guard. We looked at the email that he received and that doesn't really match up. The one on the website is referring to prepaid devices according to my manager, not contract.
Best buy didn't honor my insurance today. They are a total scam. I mean I haven't posted in this forum for a looooong time and I was compelled to write here. I spent 2 hours arguing with the manager, and all they would do for me is knock $50 off an upgraded phone. The guy I originally was working with finally told me that: if the phone is broken beyond repair... they will NOT honor the insurance. Only minor defects e.g. cracked screen, broken power button, broken camera (repairable stuff) is covered. Please save your $15 a month... I'll never spend another dime in a best buy store again.

What?!? I have taken no less than 8 different phones in that were clearly broken behold repair over the past few years. In fact that was one of the major selling points in the old days. I would go to a different best buy and try again, and again till one takes it. That is BS~!

Do you have it in writing that they will fix /replace/ repair (whatever you are trying to do) a phone that is "broken beyond repair"? And did you satisfy the terms of the contract? If so, contact their corporate office about the issue.

I have the geek squad pamphlet right next to me and it says "accidental damage from handling covers damage as a result of unexpected and unintentional drops and spills that arise from normal usage of the product as the manufacturer intended. Abuse, misuse and fraud not covered". The way I read <<that is it covers accidental drops regardless of severity of damage.
I guess I didn't mention how it happened to you guys. Girlfriends kid was sticking the phone out the window to get a better signal while I was driving, I told him to bring it in and he dropped it out of a moving vehicle. It was an accident, however I guess in the truest sense of the term it wasn't (at the time) "normal use of the product". However that doesn't even matter. The representative said "I'll put another story that will sound better" (whatever that means). The manager came over, took a photo of my phone and sent it to her boss. She came back later and said it won't be covered.
The way the manager made it sound was that the insurance company they are sending it to would not pay for it and would send it back to them as denied. I already made a thread on the best buy forums. I will be contacting corporate, I will even find the email of the CEO and send him an email too if it comes down to it. I've done it before with other companies and have no qualms about doing it again.

Yes I agree. I was a champion for Best Buy. I would always tell people "why'd you buy your phone from X? If you buy it from Best Buy, they phone is covered in almost all situations". I've used them before on my iphone 4 and it was also smashed, and I never had a problem. The next closest best buy is about 1 hour away. I'm also going to call the Geek Squad tomorrow and see what they say.
If all else fails, AT&T is offering a $250 upgrade addition for the 5S. So instead of spending $700+ on a new phone it is $199+250= $450.
---------- Post added at 09:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:07 PM ----------
I had no intention of giving that phone up. The phone's camera was shot (purple blotches on the photos), the power button was broken but, I was running 6.1 jailbroken! I have no interest in owning an un-jailbroken iphone. I was willing to deal with the failing hardware issues to retain my jailbreak and keep the insurance for a catastrophic event. Now the way it looks, not only will I be running an un-jailbroken iphone while waiting for envasi0n to release a jailbreak, but I will be coming out of pocket $450 minimum (not counting the $360ish I spent on "insurance" premiums). Double whammy on my end.
I'm sorry to vent but I am furious!! The customer service rep also told me that they insurance is changing to a $150 deductible with new cellphone sales.
Best Buy Geek Squad Protection: $9.99 / month or $199.98 / 2 years. Covers drops, water damage, and other malfunctions. Deductible: $150. Repairs existing handset if possible, if not, replaces with refurbished or new handset of same or like model. (Note: the deductibles were added and pricing changed as of Sept. 1st, 2013 - non-deductible coverage for new customers is no longer available).

Verizon insurance options and costs

I spoke to a rep yesterday that said the insurance with Verizon has two different plan options, $7 or $10, with the latter providing coverage for if the phone is lost. The rep was unsure of the deductible. Does anyone have details of the insurance options, or the best type of insurance to get at the lowest rate?

Lowest rate would be if you just bought a 2 year protection plan and paid it all up front. (I guess it's a higher rate but you only pay once). They offer 2 yrs protection for $160 at best buy for the s6 so I'm guessing it's something similar to that at verizon though maybe cheaper as best buy charged 8 a month if you wanted a monthly version.

I believe there are 3 different insurances that Verizon offers.
WPP - Wireless Phone Protection ( ~$7.00 ) Covers lost, stolen, or accidental damage.
TEC - Total Equipment Coverage (~$9.00) Covers lost, stolen, or accidental damage and includes extended warranty after the 1 year manufacturers.
TMP - Total Mobile Protection (~$11.00) Covers lost, stolen, or accidental damage and includes extended warranty plus "A team of certified Tech Coaches who provide support for Verizon devices."
TMP is worthless. I would always choose TEC because of the extended warranty. Extended warranty is for as long as you have the device and you pay for it monthly.
I am almost positive they all have the same deductible. Used to work for Verizon once upon a time.
Hopefully this helps.

This is correct. They used to only charge $5.18 for WPP, which is what I always got as I typically got a new phone once per year and never used the extended warranty.
Thanks for all the good info. The rep that sold me my phone said the only option was the $11 one since it was an expensive phone. I logged into my account and sure enough it's the TMP. I buy my phones off contract about once a year so I'm thinking WPP is what would be best for me. Anyone else agree? And can I downgrade to it if I go into a store?

I've had WPP for years. It's a pain to be an extra charge on my bill but I've used it twice so it's paid for itself. Square trade is good but doesn't cover for most devices.

Unless it changed, after 2 claims they cancel your insurance.
Thanks for the info everyone. Any idea of the deductible with Verizon?
EDIT - deduct = $149.
WPP seems to make sense for me as it covers everything except warranty.

Insurance of choice?

Looking at the insurance options it seems to be between ATT, Samsung, and SquareTrade. For those who have insurace what did you pick and why?
from what I can see:
ATT:
Pros: Low Monthly ($8.99), Covers loss and theft, I believe you, I believe you are certain to get your original color?
Cons: Initial high deductible until it slides, not covered under the $89 screen repair
For ATT is it as simple as walking into a store, filing a claim, and walking out with a new one?
Samsung:
Pros: $99 deductible always, Someone comes to your house either same or next day I believe
Cons: High monthly payments ($11.99), Does not cover loss and theft, No guarantee of phone color
SquareTrade:
Pros: Low Monthly payments (I read someone said it was $7), Also read it was a low deductible like $70
Cons: Does not cover loss and theft. Too good to be true? Slow claims? I really dont know anything about this company so if someone has had experience with them it'd be helpful to know!

Just my two cents and I never used the protection plan before, just had a few phones break during the warranty period. Looks like at&t closed their device service centers, so everything is done by phone and shipped to you. I've had appointments on evenings and sundays to replace dead phones that was nice. Here's a something I put together if I decide to. at&t has extended their enrollment for the protection plans until the end of June if you missed out.
I need to update my signature too, M9 was about die....

yea I ended up going with att. thats a good speadsheet though. thanks for the share!
I have used Square Trade for many years for all my family phones, laptops/PC's, even a Keurig machine. Have had to claim a couple of times and they are very reasonable & super fast. One family member's iPhone screen cracked, initiated a claim, took it to local Genius Bar (isn't that name just a hoot), and uploaded PDF copy of the receipt, had full reimbursement from Square Trade into my PayPal account in less than 24 hours. No problems using this service at all. If device can't be fixed, or if repair facility wants to replace rather than repair, Square Trade reimburses the full cost. Just have to look at which service level and desired deductible you want.

I have always purchased AppleCare+, Samsung Protection Plus or On-Guard by Assurant ect for my devices. I have enjoyed paying a one time fee and having coverage for 2 years and not being gouged with a reoccurring monthly fee. I've never had to make a claim but I feel great comfort in knowing I am covered.
I've never had carrier insurance such as AT&T's, mostly because I usually have several devices at any given time and swap my SIM often, and was told once ( most likely erroneously ) that once I swap my SIM into another phone the insurance is no longer valid for the original device.
Looking at what AT&T's insurance offers it seems outrageously expensive. I can't imagine anybody is actually paying for that. $229 deductible?!? Thats batshlt crazy!
I paid $129 for AppleCare+ for my iPhone 7 Plus. Deductible is only $29 for screen replacement and $99 for the entire device. Those are incredibly reasonable prices. My Note 5 was $129 with a $99 deductible.
When I purchased my Galaxy s8+ in store the AT&T sales associate was pushing the insurance really hard. I declined several times always planning on buying Samsung Protection Plus. I was pretty upset when I got home and saw that Samsung Protection Plus is not offered for the s8 and s8+. Instead we get Samsung Premium Care for $11.99 a month with no option to pay for the full 2 years. That means you are paying $306.03 I'm really not too happy about that.
I have several SuareTrade warranties. Have only had to make a claim once, on a 60" Plasma TV. They were super fast about accessing the situation remotely and ended up replacing it with a brand new, much nicer full array LED. I have to say I was pretty happy with how SquareTrade handled it. Maybe I'll give then a shot at my s8+. I'd rather do that than pay $306.03 to Samsung or a ridiculous $229 deductible with AT&T
