I just ordered the shield tablet from amazon, it should be here in a few days, and I am wondering if I should let the tablet update to lollipop or stay on kit kat. I have read some problems with lollipop like memory leakage and battery issues.
Do the benefits of Lollipop out weigh the glitches?
I haven't used xposed on my current tablet. I know that in lollipop you can't use xposed (I plan to root)
I have yet to see a real benefit lollipop offers. Even SD card compatibility, the one feature I was excited about, is limited to recently updated apps that took advantage of the API. But that's not accounting for the amount of trial and error that goes into making the Google Storage Access Framework actually work with your SD card after the proper apps are found!

Rumor has it another update is coming soon. Wait and see how that goes
I see no reason not too as long as you follow some simple advice - do a complete wipe of the device afterwards.
If for nothing else, the performance is much better than KitKat. At one point I down graded back to Kit Kat and within a few hours felt it was a different device in terms of lagging. Lollipop does a much better job of having more consistent performance.
I generally have no issues with Lollipop.
Now... is it perfect absolutely not! Battery is not as good or at least the measurements are no longer accurate (which I believe is the case). And it does not address specific pitfalls of the Android OS like SD cards (But with rooting you can fix that easily)...

Ok thanks a lot for everyone's opinions. If a wipe is recommended I might as well do the update from the start.

Hi guys, before I update to nougat and sacrifice my xposed modules, can you guys share your thoughts/experience about this new update? Is there a big improvement on battery life or performance? Problems?
Sorry, I don't want to risk going back to 6.0.1 and brick my device, but this will help some like me. Thanks guys!
Hi, I noticed a real improvement with performances compared to 4.4, it's really really smooth, no bugs, no lags, no crashs
Battery is a bit better but slower to charge.
And gaming is better too, I was with an OC Kernel and now with stock 5.0 it's better.
Nougat on shield is a real improvement for me. But you should wait recovery image for a clean installation.
I dont see any advanteges of nougat. Nothing really change
There's a bit of a performance increase, but I've noticed some strange bugs...It takes much longer to charge my tablet, and there's quite a few wakelocks...Even the screen comes on by itself (This is after a complete wipe after upgrading, then having Google download the same apps I had before the upgrade).. Cant place my finger on the issue, but its a bit disappointing so far. Might wipe and start over or wait for an optimized stock from one of our nice devs here at XDA.
What an dissapointment on nougat
I tought it also great to apdate it.. Some of a cool fetures they offers.. But afyer i update my tablet.. My tablet becomes laggy and he also heating like crazy.. And some apps may not opened.. And if he's too laggy i just reboot my tablet on/off then it quite okay.. After several apps you opened ...and here we go again.. Damn.. I just wish i could turn back my 6.1 update again.. How will i fix this ??
Performance in gaming is very good, but in overall use tablet became laggy. Nvidia is going to relase patch for 5.0 update so i hope they fix the bugs.
I dont beleive what a **** nvidia give to us. Laggy. During playing a game i cant listening to a radio. Im very, very dissapointed.
My home and recent buttons as well as notification all disappeared after the update. Could anyone suggest how I may solve this problem?
I googled around and that seems a common problem after upgrading android, and the solution is to use adb. But my adb cannot see my tablet
and I could not find a way to turn on developer's mode .... (tapping Build Number does not work...)
Thanks a lot!!
I'm seeing significant improvement in performance. It's faster opening apps, going back to home screen, app drawer, etc.
For those with laggy performance (versus MM) or other bugs, you may need to factory reset (or recovery image clean install, as another mentioned). Its fairly common on any Android device, that migrating data doesn't play well with OTA updates. I know it sucks to have to reset. But that is one of the facts of life of Android.

What Kind of charger are you using? I noticed mine doesn't seem to want to charge at all. It sat for a while powered off on my charger and didn't want to power on it would say the battery was too low. Even when I was able to get it to boot up it would power off before android came up and go back to the powered off battery charging state. I was able to finally get it to recovery mode and that is showing the battery is charging its up to 5% after a few minutes. I'm using a Samsung fast charger rated at 5V 2.0 Amp or 9V 1.67 Amp.
you are right. For me wipe cache was enough i think. I will watch out.
MY OBSERVATIONS
My System and Methods:
0. Original Shield Tablet US-LTE, TWRP 3.0.3 by BitObsession, Unrooted, Pretty much stock
1. Flashed Full image of US-WIFI 4.4 version EXCEPT USERDATA (so that everything remains the same way). After reboot, I have observed that some apps just crashes so i figure these apps had problems during the firmware change (from US LTE tpo US WIFI). so i had them all uninstalled, and re-installed.
2. Allowed OTA for WIFI 5.0 to pop-up, downloaded
3. (VERY IMPORTANT) Made sure that everything that google play has to update were all updated
4. Installed WIFI 5.0 OTA
5. Very smooth installation - NO getting stuck at Nvidia Logo for a long time (as reported by most people...could be because they were rooted?)
6. Initially, occasional lagging occurred, so i think this is cache issue. since i feel like my recovery had been overwritten to stock, i reboot the tablet. then, in the software update menu in settings, i also cleared cache. then i rebooted again., just to make sure.
7. generally, the tablet feels smoother, im enjoying split screen. sometimes, it lags.
8. NO ISSUE with charging. same as usual whether the tablet is idle or im playing casual to heavy games
9. SD card write performance is the same
10. Antutu and Geekbench numbers improved
NEXT EXPERIMENT:
flash ROW LTE 5.0 update and flash TWRP 3.3.0 so i can clear cache WILL NOT ROOT hehe
My K1 is stock. After the OTA update, I had some performance issues and issues with the Google Play Store. The issues with the Play Store went away after I got a notification that Google Play Services needed to be updated. I wound up doing a factory reset yesterday for the performance issues, and so far the tablet is running much better.

Battery issue
Before the update I had dramatic performance issues on wake up. They went nearly away with the nougat update.
But unfortunately I experience the battery issue described here:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/...arge-battery-drain-after-android-7-0-update-/
Very slow charging. Never charges up to 100% - stops between 50% and 75%.

The only thing that helps is a factory reset. Sometimes the battery calibration gets borked - especially with a major os upgrade. I did a factory reset before the Nougat update and everything works great.
General OS performance seemed slightly better, but at a cost of higher battery drain and extremely slow charging speed. I unlocked my bootloader and rolled back to Android 6 (update 1.5).
My two cents:
Other than the horrible noise emitting from the speaker's while charging and a new inability to keep a stable wifi connection; I like it OK.
I use it for native gaming and movies. I rooted nougat and that's it. Honestly dont see a huge improvement over the last OS, maybe a tiny bit smoother.
NVIDIA still won't let you control your own power settings, offering their lame performance/power feature again . Hate it.
Battery standby time seems improved, as does the battery life while watching native movies with Dolby Atmos activated
Boot up time seems longer, and it also uses roughly half your RAM or more to operate the OS.
I can't stand the charging noise, so I am most likey going to downgrade.
Also, when you close the lid on the screen while watching a movie, (it turns off) but it now will turn back on and play if you plug or unplug the charger while the lid is closed. REALLY annoying. And often embarrassing.
I wouldn't recommend the update. i just reset my Tablet back to 5.1.1 because it became so slow that it was unusable. Constantly freezing after the downgraded to 5.1.1 and it runs as smooth as the first day.
***SIDE NOTE***
When i upgraded to 7.0 i lost 5gh wifi networks. Since downgrading they are back just a little note.
Hi everyone,
I have a Verizon S7 flat (G930V). I bought it sometime mid-2016 and it's rooted with the eng kernel on 6.0.1. The baseband is G930VVRU4API3. The bootloader is locked and obviously that's very limiting.
I really enjoy the added functionality that comes rooting, but sometimes the phone hangs randomly and becomes unresponsive seemingly for no reason. I was wondering if there's a better experience to be had by updating to 7.0+, preferably with root.
What are my options now in Q4 of 2017? What's the deal with the "U" firmware? Is there a non-eng way of rooting or any one that doesn't bog down the phone so much, or is non-rooted the only way to go? Can I go from where I am now to where I want to be without wiping my phone, or is that needed/recommended?
Sorry for all the questions. For my past Android devices this info was pretty cut and dry, but it's hard figuring out what's the latest or more well received methods for this device. I love the phone, but going forward I don't think I'll choose Samsung if I want any sort of freedom (basically stuck with Verizon US, though).
Thank you for any direction you might be able to provide me.
I tried rooting with eng.boot kernel on my 930U but didn't like it - too much lag, very noticeable. And battery life was also worse, so I returned to stock.
I guess Verizon debloated hybrid ROM (or something like that can't remember exactly) would be good variant for you to go if you decide upgrading to nougat. I personally tried it hoping I would get 6 hrs SOT but got only very small positive difference in terms of battery life - "android system" is always on top positions in battery stats.
Hey there,
I have a Pixel 1 rooted with Nougat (7.1.2). The phone is playing tricks lately (shuts down after random activities for no reason even when the battery is more than half full), so figured it might help to use a more updated version.
Couldn't find a full guide on how to root Pie on a Pixel. The only guides I saw were for Pixel XL and Pixel C, where it said the
Any idea where I can find one or maybe it's not going to help at all with the issue I'm having?
Thanks in advance.
I'm starting to get the same on my pixel running stock android 10, I get the occasional reboot while charging or while taking a photo? Probably a battery or hardware issue more than a software issue.
Root wise just check the main magisk thread for how to root, can either flash via twrp or you can root via magisk manager with a modified boot.img.
Good luck
On my end it doesn't even reboot. Just shuts down and unless I connect it to a charger, it won't load up (just shut down right after boot).
So indeed sounds like hardware/battery.
Is there a chance an updated OS will fix that or I'm wasting my time and best would be to get a new battery or a new phone?
It depends on the device, Ive changed batteries on a few before with mixed success tbh. I won't be changing the battery in my pixel as it's a right pig to change apparently so I'll get another device once it's dead.
Phone (G920F) is getting old now, it's 2022, and I had it as a backup. Last week a new battery arrived and I swapped it so it's nice to see it holds it's charge. I've started to install some apps but noticed a few won't work, infact playstore didn't even show me kiwi browser just an example and YouTube Vanced won't install after 14....something. Question is what is the latest android I can install on this thing? What's the lightest ROM similar to this? And most importantly should I even bother updating or will the same faith happen if I go to say Android 7.0? I'm not sure what to do, I have a working phone but some apps don't support 5.1.1 (it's ok I'm using alternatives). I'm just not knowledable enough to figure all of this on my own.
Plan is to swap the SIM card with a Galaxy S9 almost every day while the S6/S9 is charging, hence the dual phone wield and the recent refresh of the battery.
i still use my old G920f and i start feeling i have to change it and get a new phone
why !!
-batter in 2022 battery with 2550 is not enough at all
-the camera there is now phone has so much batter camera special at night
-Android 7 u will get problems with some apps and even if i use custom rom always there is bugs
if you have money u should upgrade man
