No Display On Incoming Calls - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I looked around to see if any other thread was made about this and I could not find one. So I apologize if this as been asked before. But - does anybody else having issues when your phone rings, the display does not light up? It remains black? The only way to see who is calling is either press the power button or use the Pixel Print sensor.
This is the only time I have an issue with display. The proximity sensor is not the problem, the phone is not in a case - and I turned auto lock time up to 5 minutes to make sure its not a lock screen issue. Can't find anything in the settings that would turn display off on an incoming call.

Same here got it starting last week. I think it's the phone apk

I have discovered the same issue, but it only occurs when my phone is connected to a Bluetooth device. If I disconnect the Bluetooth device the screen comes on for an incoming call. Must be a new feature they have added.
I removed the latest phone APK and the issue went away. Updating to latest APK again, v15.0.179075669, the issue comes back.
I contacted Google support and they offered to replace my phone. A bit excessive I think as to me it looks like a software bug.

My wife's Pixel 2 started doing the same thing. She complained to me about a week ago. I'm glad I found this thread, so it seems to be a software bug.

How do you remove the latest phone APK? I'm having this exact issue - tried troubleshooting with Google and they wanted me to do a reset of my phone, which (a) I don't think will help, and (b) I don't want to reset everything! This is an annoying "feature" - there should absolutely be a way to override this default, if this is indeed the intended functionality.

You go to settings and then you go to your apps then you go to phone and then after you click into your phone on a top right corner is three dots you click on that and select uninstall updates... That's how I fixed mine until they put out an APK for the phone app that actually works right.

same problem here!

I only got this for Spam calls so far

Yesterday it was a call from a local store that was calling me to let me know that my order was in. This morning, it was my daughter's school's automated system calling about school delays. Both of which required me to turn on my display to see who was calling.
I've just placed a feedback comment from within the phone app so google can take a look into it.

I discovered this while connected to my car bluetooth as well. However, there was another time when only the ambient display showed a small phone icon and the name of the caller with the words "incoming call" next to it. The rest of the phone did not light up.
It sucks because the caller ID does not transmit to the car's screen, so I'm answering blindly.

It's the same for me. I have to press the power button to see whose calling me. I thought it was just me. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

It drives me nuts!!! Same here. The screen doesn’t lights up on incoming calls whem bluetooth is actively connected.

Just happened today....going to try turning Bluetooth off and check it out....

I had the same issue, and after googling around I found only one solution - factory reset. I did it and it works.
But after that playing with the settings I found where was the problem and You can fix the problem without Factory reset.
Go to Settings - Apps & notifications - App info - Phone - App notification and there you should enable Incoming calls.
Under the Incoming call should appear the text *Make sound and pop on screen*. If *No sound* appears, then click and hold on *Incoming calls,* then click on I*mportance* and finally click on *Urgent*.

I followed your instructions, but all of my settings were already correct and I still have the issue.

Having the same problem here too. It's especially maddening when I'm riding my motorcycle with the phone connected to BT headset. There are very few people that I want to answer the phone when I am riding and with the phone in it's mount I can't easily hit the power button with gloves on to see who is calling.
Hopefully it gets addressed soon. In the mean time there a link to an existing complaint thread that I can add my voice too?

Incoming call notification

When I receive a phone call, the phone displays either 1 or 2 options.
Option 1: Regular notification where i can drag the phone icon to answer or decline, which is easy.
Option 2: It displays like the screenshot below. Nothing happens when I tap on the DISMISS or ANSWER. The only way to take a call is to slide the notification left or right to dismiss it, then pull down the notification center and click there. It is far too much work.
My LG G3 does not have that problem. Is it a bug? Does anyone have this problem. and how do I fix or avoid this?
Thanks.
UPDATE: I just tried reboot it, and it worked. Now I can touch DISMISS/ANSWER. Not sure if it will acting up again.
I never saw that. But I switched to a different launcher within an hour of getting the phone and may never have received a call during that time.

I get that too didnt realize it was a bug just an annoyance
Yeah I get that one one too sometimes and not sure why. Usually I screw it up and ditch the caller on accident when I get this notification bar for an incoming call. I hate it!
How did you enable that incoming call banner?
I always get option 1
Are you using the default phone app or hangouts

I use the default phone app.
And I don't think this has anything to do with launcher as I just changed to NOVA but problem still persists.

Accidentally hitting HOLD button during calls?

I'm noticing that during many of my calls, I apparently hit the HOLD button accidentally with my cheek. My proximity sensor seems to be working fine, and the screen does turn off appropriately when I hold the phone against my face. I'm assuming that at certain angles enough light gets through to the sensor to turn the screen on, and I accidentally hit the button in the corner. Anyone else have this issue? Is there any way to circumvent this? Thanks
Unfortunately i can't help but i am getting the same issue
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
I tried applying different dialer apps and they only serve to change the dialer/contact screens, but the default calling screen containing the HOLD button remains unchanged. I found that using Skype as the default dialer fixes this issue since it uses its own dialing/calling screens, but obviously it's not practical to just rely on Skype. So the problem still remains unresolved.
As an update, someone on Reddit posted a download link to the Google dialer app here at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/themes-apps/app-google-dialer-t3323432
This installs a new dialer, which actually provides a new calling screen as well, fixing the main issue. The default dialer is better in my opinion since it opens up the dial pad immediately while this one doesn't, but this is a good option at this point

even worst than calls is when you press it while watching youtube vids, i wish there was a lock of some sort cuz the music stops paying all the sudden
It's embarrassing when I put my clients on hold and don't realise until they don't respond to me. The cheek hold doesn't result in any audible sound so you can be talking for 20 seconds with the other end on hold. I love the S7 edge but I'm contemplating sending it back. I'll try the Google dialer mentioned above first though
Same issue here. I talk on the phone almost 2 hours a day and this is happening at least 1-2 times in every call! Checked my proximity sensor and it's working as it should.
Any workarounds? Maybe someone can edit the phone.apk and remove this stupid button or disable it? I am against rooting but I will definitely root my phone if there's a fix for this.
Damn, I suffer exactly the same issue! Found this googling for ideas...
Very old thread, but I just wanted to give a suggestion to others with the same issue. I really love the Google Phone dialer app, which actually replaces the calling screen during calls with this app's own screen, so you no longer have the Hold button at such an unfortunate location. If you do choose Google's app, I recommend this specific version: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-phone/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-release/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-android-apk-download/
The caller-ID function by Google actually works with this version, whereas the other .apk files floating around do not have this function working properly.
I'm having the same issue and I've installed the Google phone, however as soon as I place the call, the existing on-screen options pop up.
The option to disable the default phone app is greyed out in settings, so unsure on how to resolve.

Finally searched for the answer to this today, after several accidental holds on work calls.
The solution above with Google Phone APK worked for me. I just went to SETTINGS - APPLICATIONS - DEFAULT APPLICATIONS and then under Calling App near the top, changed it from Contacts to Phone. . For some reason, I cannot open the phone app itself (gives an error message) but calls do use the phone app rather than Samsung stock dialer.
Turn off screen!! Most phones allow you to turn screen off without interrupting the call.
Same issue with a galaxy A5 2016
Can't understand why samsung doesn't fix it

Issue with phone calls on 3a

A few weeks ago incoming phone calls stopped showing on the display, previously they took over the screen offering instant ability to answer. Now I hear the ring and have to pull down the tray and click on the phone notification to get to the screen where you can answer. Please advise. Thanks
Check if you have display over other apps in phone notifications. Also check if you have phone notifications set.
Thanks - but I did have display over other apps set and phone notifications on. Mysterious

Notifications not appearing until the phone is unlocked.

Hi,
I have owned Find X2 Pro for about 3 weeks now. I have noticed that my notification is not appearing when the phone is locked. It only shows up when I unlocked my phone.
I know Oneplus also has this issue but can be fixed by disable battery optimization.
Is there any thing I should disable or enable in order to alert me when my phone is locked.?
Have you tried going in to Privacy<Lock Screen and then selecting show notifications

I was disappointed to discover there is no notification LED on this phone, so wanted to find a way to overcome that. I'm not sure it's exactly the same issue you've found, but maybe the solution is the same?
There are several ways to replicate the missing notification indicator, but the one I've been using since I got the Oppo is NotifyBuddy. Although there is a free version (link below), I quickly paid a small amount of money to unlock all its features. This means that notifications appear on my lock screen in the form of app icons - you can select the size, colour and which ones you want to show from a list of all your installed apps. I've set mine to blink on and off at one second intervals and for NotifyBuddy to not show any notifications when the phone is in Do Not Disturb mode. A double-tap brings up the lock-screen fingerprint sensor, so it's easy to open the phone without even picking it up.
This is my preferred set-up, but the program is very flexible. It does consume some battery power because I've set it to run in the background (which seems pretty essential to me) but the extra drain is very small.
You can get it from the Play Store here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xander.android.notifybuddy&hl=en
Thank you John for your reply,
I do not think this will solve my issue nor the original posters issue. When the phone blinks out and goes into its hibernation state/lock screen state and has been idle for quite some time, no notifications come through until the phone has been picked up or woken up then all the notifications flood in. I have tried all sorts of things to get the notifications to work when the phone is in this state but it just does not work. However, if the always on display is on, all notifications work perfectly as the phone is not in that hibernation/resting state. I am not sure this app would help until this aspect is resolved, unless in your experience it has fixed the issue?
Thank you for your reply.

When the phone was in hibernation, I wasn't getting any notifications through either. The app I suggested solved this. Now I get notifications immediately, whatever the phone's state.

Also whilst I am thinking about this, supposedly lock screen magazine can impact notifications if it is turned off so I have enabled this too.
Cheers.
I thought I'd add a photo of my Oppo Find X2 Pro showing how notifications appear on my lock-screen whilst the phone is locked. This is thanks to the NotifyBuddy app which I've discussed earlier in this thread.
Sadly, I seem unable to embed the photo, so here's a link to it:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/john_gass/50301729781/in/dateposted-public/
It shows three simultaneous notifications... Twitter, WhatsApp and TypeApp (which is my preferred email app). The strange position of the icons is because I set up NotifyBuddy's ability to move the icons around to avoid any possibility of OLED screen burn-in.
And finally, I have no connection with this app except that I've been really pleased with it and feel it deserves a bit of promotion!

Question Niggles

So far, my P7P has been problem free, barring a few minor niggles. Is it just me, or anyone else faced the same, found a fix etc? 100% factory stock, no root, mods etc
- can't quick reply from the notification panel.
If there's a message i can respond to and click reply, the type message bar appears, but the keyboard does not.
No problem clicking the notification to open the app and respond.
- Using gestures, pulling up from the bottom to bring up the recents switcher, the keyboard goes haywire, nonstop opening and closing.
- I've lived in my current home for about 3 years and worked in my office for about 8 years, and not had issues on my previous devices. I keep missing calls, and get notification SMS from my provider that I've missed calls. I see at least 5 or 6 of these daily, and never had this problem before. Even if I call from my wife's phone that's right next to mine, it won't connect and soon after, i get an SMS notification that I missed the call. Is this a radio issue? Software issue?
Thanks

Have you tried a factory reset?
Try wiping the data of your keyboard. Sounds like something may be up with it there
Has it always done that? Are you using GBoard beta or anything else? Could just be a certain update version as well.
As for the radio issues, no problem here where I live. I'd recommend trying a factory reset, or maybe even trying the Android Beta Program for a test drive.

2. must be a software problem with the keyboard. No problems here with stock or SwiftKey keyboard.
3. everything is the same as before. Signal and reception is comparable to my previous Xiaomi Phone

one more thing I have seen somebody posting here:
"I've found dialing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting all the network options has helped me. It was limited to only NR/LTE/TDWCDMA by default for some reason on the second beta. Haven't had an issue since doing that and updating sim manager."
Maybe try another setting like LTE only or similar.
Cleared data for keyboard as suggested by @Curiousn00b and the keyboard issue in recents screen are gone, however still can't respond in the notification panel.
Will try the beta with root as it seems only I have these issues
