Morning all,
I, like many of you here, am a massive phone junkie. I like to have an option for almost every day of the week and mood I might happen to be in. This has led me to amass a collection of different phones/os's/brands over the last couple years.
Currently I am running a 64GB iPhone 5s, which integrates perfectly into my Apple TV environment in my house, as well as the Sync system in my F150. I like the apple experience when I want something mindless. There are times that I just don't want to screw with my phone. It's also easily pocketable and great for one handed use.
I also have an HTC One. By far the best out of the box Android phone I've ever used (with the exception of the purple hazed camera). The phone runs well and looks great. Can't really say anymore than that. I hate the white/silver finish, but I learned to live with it, as my carrier of choice doesn't offer the black version. This phone is also the longest I've ever used a device without swapping handsets.
Here's my issue. I've recently ran upon the opportunity to get a 16GB Nexus 5 or a Lumia 925 for free... I can get one or the other. No contract non-sense or anything like that. I love stock android, but outside of Cyanogen mod roms, have never had the opportunity to own one. I love the simplistic design and no-nonsense feel of the device. However, it seems like it would be awful close to the HTC One in my collection. The Lumia is the wild card here. I've always been a fan of the design of WP8. No screwing around, just smooth, at a glance phone usage. I had a 920 that I had to give up when I switched carriers, and have missed it since. The lumia doesn't pack the hardware punch that the Nexus or the One does, but with the WP8 OS, it doesn't really need it. It's a butter smooth phone with great build quality.
Anyways, what would you do? Would you go for a phone similar to one you're already packing in your pocket, or one that fills an OS gap?
There are 3 threads devoted to discussions about devices, please repost your question in one of these three threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread.
Thanks!

All reviews I've seen range from claiming that the Moto X (2015) is mediocre but solid, to being the savior of Android in 2015.
It did make Wired's top 3 phones, along with Galaxy S6+ and iPhone 6.
They are calling it "higher-end midranger"
Sent from my HTC6600LVW using Tapatalk
Midrange? Mediocre? I mean its not the top of the flight device but its still on par with lg g4, they basically have the same specs. The camera might not be so good on low light but lets wait and see, if the device is stable with stock android, does not over heat, have a regular updates and its made of fine material i cant see that any review will stop me from buying it :good:
Edit: oh, and i almost forgot the battery, hope its not that bad
I'm holding off for root and hands on reviews from people here. No reason to rush out but I can't wait to see how much activity this forum gets over the coming weeks.
I live in Europe so by then i hope i ll get pretty much good picture about the device, lets hope for the best :victory:
I just watched the Verge review of this phone on YouTube. The worste review ever ... If I didnt know any better I'd say the Style is crap after wathing that. That guy needs to be sacked - Useless!

Couldnt agree more, the weird thing is that the score at the end of the written review is not bad at all but watching the video review part is like they guy is talking about different phone. They probably think that apple makes perfect phones

I couldn't agree more! In fact, I bought my first Apple Iphone: 6+ (second hand at reduced price on Swappa) and let me tell you, I don't know what all the fuss is about. Slow, inefficient OS. I don't understand why people are devoted to Iphones, other than build quality and camera (which is now a moot point). Makes no sense. I am re-selling on Swappa or ebay..and it is now my last Iphone.
Strange reviews from the sites linked to in this thread. Reading them, I don't know much about the phone that I didn't to begin with. The camera gets some attention, but things like the speakers and the specifics of the display don't. How good do the speakers sound? What do they sound like? How's the volume? There's some mention that the HTC BoomSound speakers are better. That's fine. But some detail? More importantly, what about the display? A few reviewers complained that it's not as good as the AMOLED is on Samsung devices. Personally, I don't much care for AMOLED displays, though they have their strengths. How accurate are the colors on the new Style? Are the whites bright and genuinely white? (They aren't on AMOLED displays, a major problem, at least for me.)
I'm not one to study benchmarks extensively. Some general info about them is fine for me. But I do want some detail. Just saying "I like it" or "I don't like it" doesn't do anyone any good.
I suppose that the reviews we get from the geekier sites will fill in a few blanks. That and feedback from early users here.
I completely agree. The Engadget review seems the best one so far. Verge was terrible.
Based on these reviews, the battery doesn't seem too great, just mediocre. Hopefully we'll get better reviews from mkhd and/or android authority.
If the battery is that bad, I may hope the Huawei Nexus has a bigger battery and is around the $400 price range. If not, hopefully the Motorola Force? That is if it isn't a Verizon exclusive and the price is around $400.
Last resort is the Oneplus 2.
I know it will take a while but I will wait for Erica Griffin's or anandtech's review of this phone and maybe get it on sale on blk friday.

I bet Erica will hate the screen. She is big on amoled/warm screens so probably will talk about how much she hates the screen. I'll bet you a "thanks" on that ?

If she hates the screen, but gives a good description of what it looks like, at least we'll have some useful information. Where does she write?

Normally youtube, she is huge on displays and will run all sorts of tests on it.
On another note I found this review helpful https://youtu.be/dfPPEDWqRxI
That CNET review really glorified the Note 5. As an owner of the Note 4, I know it's strengths. The Note 5 shares none of those strengths. And I know its weaknesses. The Note 5 shares them all.
Sorry Samsung, you're dead to me. Can't wait for my Moto X.
Correct if I'm wrong but I don't see V10 review videos from the top two YouTube reviewers with well over one million subscribers each. I know they reviewed LG's previous phones like the G4. You would think with the aggresive LG promotional offer that these two reviewers would have had an interest in informing the public that LG were throwing everything and the kitchen sink behind their first V series phone, both in terms of features that touch on many of their favorite topics like audio (32 bit DAC) and photo (full manual controls on video) and the unique second screen feature as well as the marketing. Was there ever another flagship phone that gave away $250+ in accessories? I can't think of one. This phone and it's launch has more than enough to distinguish it from most other phones in the flagship category. It sounds like there is either some politics or payola going on. There's no way they aren't aware of this phone and it's unique position as the last combination of SD card and removable battery.
Again apologies if I missed their reviews of the V10 but I subscribe to both and didn't notice a notification for the V10.

I don't have anything particularly noteworthy to add, other than the fact that my impression is also that the V10 has been a little (oddly) overlooked in the press and media. At least compared to other phones like the Note 5 and S6 models that pretty much every site and reviewer covered ad nauseam. I also noticed Mobile Tech Review didn't touch the V10, that's usually the first Youtube review I hit.
It's strange considering not only the promotion, but the fact that the phone has no glaring flaws, excellent specs with a lower than average price (with T-Mobile at least) and includes 2 things many are still demanding in a phone - a removable battery and SD expansion. LG deserves extra respect and acknowledgement for not trying to nickle & dime the customer with ridiculous storage upcharges. Not sure about conspiracies, but considering that most "reviewers" are beholden to manufacturers for review units, it wouldn't surprise me. The only reviewers I really trust anymore anyway are MTR, Erica Griffin, and Max Lee. I noticed Erica posted some video taken with the V10, so I would assume she has a review coming soon.
Pocketnow just posted their review for the v10.. Seemed like they do not like the v10 too.. Its a shame that reviers are butt licking Samsung and Apple phones these days.. You are absolutely right on Erica Griffin and max Lee being the most informative goutebers.. Max Lee already released like 5 videos on the v10!

I guess this begs the question are the bigger reviewers paid to do their reviews? Even if they have to pay for their own review phones wouldn't it be penny wise but pound foolish to pass up all the views and new subscribers by doing another flafship? As a top reviewer your subscribers expect you to weigh in on all the flagships phones. I even recall MKBHD doing an Amazon Fire phone video even though he didn't have the phone and He told everyone not to buy it! I guess he was mad they didn't include him on the list of people to demo the phone pre-release. It seems the same thing has happened here.
I'm actually dumbfounded that MKBHD hasn't given any LG V10 love he seemed to live the G4 iirc. I've been waiting for his video on it then bam Black Berry Priv... Okay... Awkward...
The phone just came out what, a few weeks ago right? Marques usually takes at least 2 weeks to get around to a new device and when he does he'll take several days of using it as a daily runner before putting together a video. Yes, I'll admit I checked earlier myself to see if he'd done one yet on the V10 and I know he will, it's just going to take some time.
I figure within another 2 weeks we'll see a review on his YouTube channel and I look forward to it.
Realize that he made a video recently that gets the point across that we don't compare new smartphones on what's new anymore or what's better - the comparisons are pretty much "Ok, thanks for tuning in and viewing, here's what's wrong with this device..." and that's about it.
While I do like his videos for the information they provide, I also find the video reviews by Lisa at MobileTechReview to be very well done too. Those are pretty my go-to channels on YouTube when I'm interested in getting opinions of hands on usage overall.

MKBHD usually does a quick preview video and then a longer full review. He's done neither.
The more I think about it, the more I think LG decided to carefully select which reviewers they wanted to get first crack a preview model. I think they picked Max Lee because he's a big advocate of consumers being able to use SD cards and change their own batteries. We all know that blocking those two things is just a transparent attempt by Samsung, Apple, etc. to shorten the shelf life of phones so that you're buying a new phone every year and half. And to fleece us out money by marking up the price for storage even when its gotten to be really inexpensive. Apple are the most flagrant abusers of this, $650 only get you 16GB in the year 2015. Ridiculous!
Max was very critical about Samsung dropping these deal-breaker features for many former Samsung, and now LG V10, customers. LG must have picked up on that and made sure he received a demo unit. He's become my #1 reviewer. I like to Erica Griffin as well, she does a great job of checking for color accuracy on displays. Jaime from Pocket Now and Armando Ferreira are my two other favorites.
Speaking of reviews, which independent reviewers do you guys recommend, or trust the most? By "independent" I mean review products using their own money, not getting anything from the manufactures. I feel like using a device provided by the manufactures could more or less affect their opinions toward the product.

That's ericas newest post on g+. Its safe to say she is very fond of the phone.
I tend to buy phones on my impressions and desires. I was unimpressed by the G4 and I'm glad the V10 came out of nowhere. My only complaint is that they could have came up with LED style app for the second screen, but I'm sure with time a Xposed module will come out for it similar to the ones that have been made for Samsung phones.

It did feel slightly like a pity review as many are probably asking him about the phone.
I bet you MKBHD did his review a little later because dbrand didn't send him a phone. Probably the same reason why UnboxTherapy hasn't done one yet too.
dbrand even tweeted this out: Can people stop saying the LG V10 has a "second screen"? That pathetic bar at the top is not a "second screen".
Obviously, they got something against the V10... So maybe they didn't send MKHBD or UT the phones.
*edit*
Also how could Marques not mention the DAC?!

That was part of the reason it felt a little forced quick style review. A lot of factors could come to play though.

Sounds like this 'dbrand' person is a bit of a boob considering that yes, the second screen is "a second screen" with dedicated circuitry which is discrete from the main display situated below it. It ain't much in terms of size but it is indeed a second screen in the device itself.
As for someone sending phones, from my understanding MKBHD buys his phones directly and never gets them for free just to do a review - he's always maintained that stance so that people won't have issues with the reviews whether they're favorable or not, and considering how many views he gets on his YouTube channel, he's most certainly making some income from it. That Red Dragon camera he uses to film his videos didn't come cheap and it sure as hell wasn't free either, so I have no reason to doubt that he does indeed purchase all the devices he does reviews on or even mentions.
If he doesn't well, that would just make him a scumbucket human being then wouldn't it?
I find it very unusual that he MKBHD calls the V10 underrated. I think you have to even know it exists in the first place to call it underrated. I have yet to meet a single person in my daily life who knew what the V10 was or had any idea it was coming out. But overall, I think that his reason for not doing a full review by now was flat out weird. "Better late than never?". That's not a really high standard for a guy with 3 million subscribers. I absolutely mystified why he hasn't done one of his 30 minute reviews given what he a fan he is of audio and video, the ability to customize the skin making Nova Launcher unnecessary, just so many features that are packed into one device for 64GB standard.
Oddly enough I was driving my car Sunday evening and a radio commercial came on for the V10 announcing the 64GB free SD card and free battery/cradle. That has to be the first time I have ever heard a radio commercial for a tablet or phone. It seems pretty clear to me that LG are not on Apple or Samsung's level yet on being able to mount a flagship phone marketing campaign. But who cares we should support them simply because they gave us SD card and removable battery. And giving us all a 200GB card, that's about the complete opposite of what Apple and Samsung do for their customers, which is basically to nickel and dime them.
dbrand aka douche brand can be childish and annoying sometimes.
lol @ the second screen not being a "second screen". is an extended display better?
So I had been living quite contently with my Oneplus 2 for some time now. I was turned onto it by a good friend and got involved in the Pop up events and became very active on there forums. Eventually I got an early invite and scooped up the phone and had been fiddling with it ever since...
Once I saw what the Galaxy S7E was suppose to be, and how it had both the hardware I wanted as well as the super premiuim look, I had to go out and grab one myself.
Right now my S7E is used as my primary "real life phone" and my Oneplus 2 is more of a tinkering phone (rooted and flash to my hearts content).
So I will just make a quick comparison for anyone who has the OP2 or a similar device and is thinking about making the switch..
ALL of these are just my opinion and shouldn't be considered as fact (duhh)
What I like about the Galaxy S7 edge MORE:
1) It feels super premium.. There is almost a certain sex appeal about the phone when you finally get it in hand and really get to feel the build quality. It might sound dumb but it feels ALOT more premium than the Oneplus 2 OR the Nexus 6p. Both how it feels in the had and how visually appealing it is completely blows other phones out of the water..
2) It has certain features that I was left completely without on the Oneplus 2. More specifically android pay and Samsung pay. These are two features that I desperately WANTED to try but never could. For anyone who doesn't know the OP2 lacks NFC (which i think was very silly of them but im sure they have their reasons). Samsung pay for me has been a blessing so far. Ive been able to leave the house with just my phone and forget my wallet and dont have to worry at all! It may be trivial to some but not to me
What I like about the Oneplus 2 MORE:
1) There really is only 1 huge thing I like about the Oneplus 2 so far... The development. The OP2 has been a modding dream. All the different ROMS, Mods, rooting and unlocking fun have been bliss so far. Of course its to early to say Samsung s7e LACKS development because it just came out, BUT it may stay like that for some time... For anyone who hasnt read it these XDA article was pretty sad to read (i mean it made me sad...) http://www.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7-bootloader-lock-explained-you-might-not-get-aosp-after-all/ SO thats why im keeping my OP2 instead of selling it at the moment.
I will note that for ME the Galaxy S7E HAS INDEED GOTTEN VERY HOT and HAS BUGGED OUT BEFORE. Just yesterday I was switching between Snapchat and Tumblr (....dont ask me why) and the phone got VERY VERY hot. It actually rebooted itself for some reason which was not pleasing to see happen.
If anyone has ANY questions about thinking to make the switch please feel free to shoot me a message! I will try and upload some comparison pictures later today or tomorrow as I think some members would value that. Also please let me know if you guys want me to do some case reviews (I already racked up 7 cases...)
Buying a "Used" phone is a learning experience. I want to share my thoughts and hope people learn from the experience and mistakes (Oh yes..mistakes )
It was my first time buying a second-hand device or well second-hand anything for that matter.
mod edit - irrelevant youtube links removed
History:
I was using a 1st Gen Moto G (falcon / XT1033). It was getting pretty old, but the development was still strong (Kudos to all the developers on XDA, I was on 7.1.2). App loading times were getting worse, battery-life was okay (I don't use the phone much). But when I needed, the phone was slow to respond... so I used to waste a lot of time looking at the loading screens.
Probably time had come to replace the humble Falcon!
Needs:
Wanted to try a second-hand device.
Needed a decent processor.
I don't mind taking a hit in the Camera dept.
Budget restricted to Rs. 6500 or $100. (+- Rs 1000 / $15)
Usage: 1.5 years at least.
Most important: Needs to be supported well on XDA (So no worrying about the software for at least 2 years)
Prospects:
a) Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Pros: 1) AMOLED
2) Stylus (USP - I always admired the innovation in the Note series, especially the "S-Pen")
3) Within the budget
Cons: 1) Support on XDA is mediocre (Just Samsung ROMS) ( I like vanilla Android)
2) Confusion about ROM support for the Exynos version. (Snapdragon has plenty of options)
b) Google Nexus 5X
Pros: 1) C'mon, its a Nexus with a sorta flagship processor.
2) Great reviews
3) On Oreo already + Plenty of development (what could go wrong within next 2 years?....)
4) Plastic Build (Yes) - Wouldn't need a bulky case!
Cons: 1) More research showed that the beloved N5X can die anytime. Snapdragon f%*ked up 808 (ftm the entire 8XX series of that year). Gods of XDA have a fix for it too.. (Takes performance hit though... Disables high-performance cores)
2) 32GB variant available at around Rs. 8000 (a bit over budget)
3) Didn't want the phone to die without any signs and start the process all over again.
4)Few listings available.
c) The winner of the contest
Moto G5 Plus (32GB / 4GB)
First a little bit about the phone. Motorola did a great thing ( releasing an 'S' version midway in the life-cycle). This made them slash the price of the earlier G5 Plus. Thus, prices were around Rs. 9000 for a 6-7month old device.
I found 2 guys offering around my budget (Lowest among the listings). One had the 'Invoice' and other didn't but was cheaper by 10%. I decided to go with the 'Invoiced' one.
Pros:
1) Snapdragon 625
2) Better camera than the competition
3) Not a 3-year-old flagship.
4) Again, great reviews and an international model.
Cons:
1) Metal build (Slippery AF)
2) Software stuck on 7.0 (Won't be much of a problem though)
3) A bit over-budget but doable.
I went to the guy, checked the phone (more on it later), paid him the cash, got the phone.
Conclusion:
The phone is good. Has quite a lot of dents (was abused quite a bit). It had a fall on one corner, so the screen from that side has popped out a bit. Thus, some dust has entered in the front camera.
After story: So, the thing is I rushed my decision to buy a phone. The lowest offers listed need not be genuine. "If it is too good to be true, it probably isn't". I should have checked the phone more. I should have tried the front camera. Take someone who has more experience, or has the same phone. They will notice the difference more prominently. Check the phone properly, take time.
People will try to con you.
After some days, I went to the service center to get the front camera lens cleaned. They told me that, the screen is not original (I hate myself now). I can notice a blue/violet shift from one angle when the screen displays black or darker colors. The screen is duplicate.
I don't mind it that much, but I feel that I got ripped.
But this process of going through all this led me to write this experience. Please take care while shopping 'Used'.
Present:
Now I am stuck with this phone. I don't hate it, but it reminds me every time, that I was conned.
Btw, I TWRP the next week, and now running AOSP Extended on Oreo.
SD625 being a 64-bit processor can handle Google camera. Happy about that!
I am now confident that, if I chose to buy a 'Used' phone next time, I know what to do!
I read might be boring. It's my 1st write-up of sorts. Thanks!
