Ok so I'm very annoyed and I'm not getting much help over at the google product forum. Ok so here is the problem, I'm walking with my phone in my hand on friday and it randomly vibrates so I looked at it and saw the google logo (not the 4 colored circles) then the phone shut off. I thought I accidentally turned it off so I tried to turn it on and nothing, plug it in to a charger and the logo keeps coming on then off and the phone has been looping like this ever since, as soon as you plug it out it completely turns off. Now I have tried the bootloader option but as soon as I see the menu come up..the phone reboots again..so I basically have a $400+ brick on my bed, so upset as I have important things to do and this is a major set back. Any idea on whats going on or how to fix it? Thanks in advance.
you need a replacement. it should be under warrenty from either google or lg.
Wow, this is a new way for bricked nexus 5. 4 phones with endless bootloops even on bootloader this weekend :crying:
RMA like said upstairs.

Hi, I'm one of the four as mentioned by GUGUITOMTG4 above haha.
You could try repeating the following steps in order:
1) Vol down + Power button for 30 seconds
2) Vol up + Power button for 30 seconds
3) Vol up + Vol down + Power button for 30 seconds
Rinse and repeat until you get the bootloader screen to stay. Mine only stayed after I threw it on a table though, as mentioned in my thread linked here. Haha good luck!
I was afraid you would say that..i bought my phone from best buy and I don't live in the US, don't know if google would let me send it back and even if it would probably take months to send and get a replacement :crying: . I did some research on the forum and numerous people that experience this same problem ( some on samsung devices) blame it on a "stuck" power button.(some suggested repeatedly playing with the power button to try and fix it) I carried it to a store and they looked at it and said it might be the power button without me mentioning it as a possibility, can a stuck power button cause this behavior? some even mentioned taking out the battery and putting it in again. If I open up my nexus would it void my warranty?

Turn off the phone if possible.
Hold down the volume_up key and connect the phone to your PC.
Is the phone still restarting?

holding volume up and plugging it in does nothing, it just continues to loop to the google logo where as volume down brings up the bootloader menu then the phone loops again
The longer you try to fix it yourself, the longer it will take for you to get a new phone... RMA it... It's a hardware failure...
Good Luck!

Oh Np. You need to contact your local LG service centre to claim warranty
Just an update, carried it to a tech shop and as suspected it was indeed the power button, they replaced it and now it's working. The technician said although the button was clicking it kept contact with the board telling the phone to turn off as soon as it turns on which caused the loop. So if anyone is experiencing similar problems you might wanna have that checked. Thanks for the numerous replies :good:

Thanks for reporting, there have been more users with that issue recently. Now you fully confirmed the cause:good:
My nexus 5 went into a bootloop today and after i tried plugging and holding everything for hours i took wjng's advice, held vollume down and power at the same time and slammed it down onto a table and it stayed on the bootloader finally. Time to flash a stock rom and pray i guess.
My phone is bone is stock. It has never been rooted or anything.
It got it wet a few months ago, but it continued to work fine. It's been dropped a couple of times, but has a case.
In the last 2 weeks it has shut off by itself a handful of times, and wouldn't power on unless I pulled the battery.
Last night it shut off, I pulled the battery, and it still wouldn't turn on. Tried a different battery, and nothing. Plugged into the wall, and I got the drained battery symbol, then the almost charged battery symbol, then a blank, and finally after that, the phone would boot. However, as soon as you pull the charging cable the phone shuts off. Also now when you get it to boot up, there is no wifi and no mobile data. I tried booting it from the computer and all I get is the vibration like it wants to turn on, then nothing.
The only thing I have done is a factory reset and it still has the same problems.
I also don't have the latest update from Verizon since I'm in South America. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Please help! Thanks in advance.

can you get into odin/download mode?
if so flash the latest image and see if it works. if not then you probably have a hardware problem.
good luck

I tried getting into Recovery Mode and Odin/Download Mode with zero success. I was afraid it was a hardware problem. Is there anyway of figuring out what hardware issue it maybe, if in fact it's hardware related?

It's probably either a bad battery or a broken power button, if you're still under warranty go get it exchanged.

I have 2 batteries. The same issue with each battery. I'm not under the warranty. I have a service plan from Best Buy, but I'm in Argentina. Is there anyway to figure out for sure if it's the power button with out taking it to a technician?

There are YouTube videos that show you how to unstick a power button on the S3. Normally you have to bang it fairly hard against something, search for the video and see if it works for you. If it makes the situation better it's your power button.

Apparently it was the power button I'm suspecting. I pressed on it firmly on the edge of the counter last night, tried to turn it on this morning, and it powered up. Should I replace the power button?
Also I would like to root the phone now, but I think I'll start another thread for that one if I have any questions.
Thanks a ton guys!
Hi guys,
I want help ASAP. my phone is driving me nuts, a month ago i got stuck on a hideous loophole where it shows Google logo then reboots only when its on charger, while off the charger it does nothing. 2 days after the incident it works just fine, today i got the same thing again. I see some people hitting it hard enough until it works. Anyway,
what is the best app to disable the power button?
can i make the volume - behave as the power button?
if the above is no, what to do?

Very helpful!!
Just replace the power button and enjoy your n5.
My pixel randomly throughout the day turns off spontaneously and the only way to start it is to hold the power button for almost 30s. Anyone have this problem and know of a fix? It's really frustrating
I'm running RR with Franco but I tried this with purenexus and ElementalX and still had the same problem. It doesn't have to do with roms also I clean flash every time

What does the battery stat show? The Nexus 6P has that issue right now where the device just shuts off and you have to hold the power button to start it, or plug it in and wait a few minutes before it will start. Some people have had this happen right when it comes off the charger. I've had it happen to 7 Nexus 6P...RMA!

This is the first android phone I have ever owned that I haven't rooted and flashed.
I had this problem start with my first pixel and about 10 days later the device failed completely (would only boot to bootloader). Same thing happened with the replacement.
Third device seems to be working fine so far.
Did you ever try booting in safe mode to see if it happens. It very well could be a third party app causing the phone to crash and reboot. If it happens in safe mode it is probably an underlying hardware issue.

No but I will. How long should I keep it in safe mode?
I actually unrooted my phone (meaning didn't flash supersu) and haven't experienced it anymore....Idk if that's the issue tho will keep testing over the next few days before sending it back

Has a solution been found to this?
My pixel XL does this when I'm watching videos. Doesn't matter if it's using YouTube, Google photos, chrome, etc... It happens randomly and sometimes doesn't happen all day. But, the only time it happens is when a video is playing. And it happens in safe mode too. I bought the phone off eBay, no warranty and don't have money ATM to replace or repair it. I'm just sol I guess.
Last few days I've experienced sleep of death. My phone has shut down by itself from standby for 2 times in 3 days. The phone is stock, bootloader locked, running on Oxygen OS 5.1.9. Does anyone have this problem?

What are you doing when it shuts down?
First time when I noticed that phone is off I press power button few times and hold it and desktop showed up. Today I was holding power button and the phone booted from the begining.

Well if your looking for help you need to give more details than "it just turns off". What's the battery level? Where you using it? Was it in your pocket? Are you running the latest version of Oxygen OS? Does it happen when it's plugged in? Have you tried to factory reset it?
battery was 80%, phone was on the table, running Oxygen 5.1.9, not happening when plugged in, didnt try factory reset, bootloader is locked, no root.
So... there are some plausible reasons, because your phone doesn't shut off when plugged in:
The battery simply is faulty and you have to send your phone back.
Something runs in the background, and makes you just believe, the phone shut off. Would explain the long holding power button procedure (simply shuts off the phone the hard way and reboots it).
An app is really draining your battery that fast. Bitcoin mining perhaps. Not that good explanation, because you were at 80% you said.
I'd go for #2. Check your apps - maybe there's one, causing this.
I go with uninstalling few apps I suspect causing this behaviour so we'll see what happens next.
Your not alone and this is definitely not so simple as a "faulty battery" .its something in the kernel causing panic and its happening only to certain chipset revisions .we need to open a ticket on oneplus
Got something similar today. 5.1. 9 unlocked and rooted, battery around 70%, same place, time, location etc like almost everyday). During conversations in Messenger and WhatsApp screen went black. I pressed power and I've seen keyboard to input pin with comment that pin have to be inserted after restart (normal behavior after reboot anyway), this reboot took maybe 2 seconds. But screen hasn't responsed for my attempt to input pin. I couldn't do anything). Hard reset (with holding power) solved problem.

Do you think it is issue which can be reason to claim warranty and send the device back to get a new one?

If you haven't modified your device (root, twrp, etc) in any way then it's absolutely a reason for a warranty claim.
Device isnt rooted or BL unlocked, all is stock. I will contact Oneplus support service if device goes off by itself again. I've installed latest software update 5.1.11 and all fine for last 2 days, lets hope it will stay like that.
