New to the forum. Love you guys' work. Been a follower since the G1 days. I got the xoom on Thursday (like a lot of you) and have loved it, until last night. My battery was going low (20% or so) and I used it for about 10 more minutes when the whole thing just shot off. I'm not sure what happened. I tried to charge it and nothing happened. If it was my G1 or Nexus, I would have just pulled the cover off and taken the battery out and rebooted, not so easy on the xoom. I think I might have to take it back, but anyone have any ideas as to how I can get it working again?
exact same thing happened to me, I pressed and held volume up and power and it booted up.

Same problem. Same fix
I just had this happen to me today, so as of March 11 its still an issue. The system appeared to be locked in sleep mode and no amount of pressing or holding the power (or any other) button wakes it up. The little light top right just keeps flashing slowly. It wasn't on a low battery either. lets hope all the other users are savvy enough to search for the answer online. I found it here on xda forum in another thread - hold down power button and volume at the same time. Which interestingly is a trick i wouldn't find in the manual, and i couldnt find an explanation for the blinking light in the manual or PDF guide either. There will be some very very worried xoom owners around until this is fixed.
My xoom does not respond to my touch, so everything seems still alive, and when I hold on the power button it does ask me if I want to turn it off, but since it does not respond to my click, I cannot reboot the system. Same trick as above solved the problem.
More information would be helpful.
1. Does this happened before or after the update.
2. Rooted, modified in any way etc etc...
AFAIK Mine still working fine. I haven't done anything to mine, so is still pretty stock.
At least there's a way to deal with this.
So this just happened to my wifi Xoom. Except the forced reboot method (volume up + power) doesn't get any response. Any quick ideas before I go exchange this at Costco?
edit: This is a completely stock Xoom.

Thanks this fixed mine as well. It's a little unnerving that it wouldn't boot to begin with, though.
Yep had this happen on mine a couple of times now.

Thank you so much! I thought my xoom was bricked!
Yep its only happened once to me since launch day, but power + volume up did fix it. No idea why it happened, havent had any problems since though.
yeah, its a lil scary. i remember when i had it happ3n. glad its working for you.

Hi everyone. Today i was chargin my phone at PC using a no-name usb cable. I've noticed while it was charging that the screen kept turning itself on and off. When i finaly took the phone, the screen was unlocked and when I tried to press the home button it did nothing but taking screenshots (like the power button was stuck). The power button was not wroking either.. After I took out the battery and restarted the phone, the power button didn't work at all. Tried to clean it off using this method but it did not work. Tried to clean the power off button using a method i've seen on google (can't post the link since i'm a new user) but its still not working
I'm desperate, please help
Are you sure, that the problem is only the power button? I have sometimes problems with this phone too. Sometimes you can't turn it on.
Try taking the battery out for at least one hour - then try to start it. I had always success with this.

The batter has proven me to be fcked in the last week, had lots lots lots of random turn-offs and restarts. But for more than 5 hours the power off button didn't work.
I'll let my batter out through the night.
Thanks for reply.
PS: I'm running ARHD 7.3.

The restarts can also result from a loose battery. Try putting a folded piece of paper between the battery and the upper casing of the phone, so the battery is pushed against the pins. This is a well-known issue. It helped me a lot. Before I had also lots of reboots.
Yep, did that in the last 1,5 year and the random reboots stopped. But as i've said, now it happens even tho' i have a paper that keeps the battery steady.
Lol just took the phone to see if the power button works and currently i'm talking screenshos pressing the home button .

How did you turn on your phone if the power button doesn't work?

I take the battery out, put it back in and after a few seconds the phone turns on.

Well, this isn't normal. Is your power button constantly pressed?
Try the following: Hold the volume down-button while inserting your battery until the phone boots up.
Does it boot into the boot manager?
Just woke up, plugged my battery in and the power button worked almost normally. Could've pressed it 5 minutes and after that and a restart it didn't work anymore.
This means I should buy a new battery and everything is fixed? Are the Anker batteries worth it ? Or do you recommend me a HTC EVO 3D battery ?

You can use the battery from the Sensation XE, which has 1.700mAh instead of 1.520 (or 1.560). At the HTC-Store they are about 50 € here in germany.
Always buy original batteries! Not the cheap ones from eBay. They usually don't have a temperature sensor, so the phone can't shut down, when it gets too hot while charging. This can be very dangerous.
I haven't got any experience with Anker-Batteries - sorry.
Pressed the volume down button and it got me into the boot menu (just like the power button is kept pressed).
Do you think that if I change my batter it will fix my problems ? Also noticed that my battery is altered, aka its not flat but swollen.

If it is swollen, it is definitively broken. Mine had the same symptoms...
I'm pretty sure, the powerbutton-problem isn't related. Does the button feel normal, if you push it? Or is there no "click"?
Maybe you can repair it with a needle by lifting the foil a tiny bit.
i dont think you need a new battery, same problem occurred with my phone, done some DIY fix and written that in a post for fellows like you in search of help.

No problems with the phones until now. It works perfectly

Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.
Did you flash any ROMs or anything previously?

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.
Ok so I'm very annoyed and I'm not getting much help over at the google product forum. Ok so here is the problem, I'm walking with my phone in my hand on friday and it randomly vibrates so I looked at it and saw the google logo (not the 4 colored circles) then the phone shut off. I thought I accidentally turned it off so I tried to turn it on and nothing, plug it in to a charger and the logo keeps coming on then off and the phone has been looping like this ever since, as soon as you plug it out it completely turns off. Now I have tried the bootloader option but as soon as I see the menu come up..the phone reboots again..so I basically have a $400+ brick on my bed, so upset as I have important things to do and this is a major set back. Any idea on whats going on or how to fix it? Thanks in advance.
you need a replacement. it should be under warrenty from either google or lg.
Wow, this is a new way for bricked nexus 5. 4 phones with endless bootloops even on bootloader this weekend :crying:
RMA like said upstairs.

Hi, I'm one of the four as mentioned by GUGUITOMTG4 above haha.
You could try repeating the following steps in order:
1) Vol down + Power button for 30 seconds
2) Vol up + Power button for 30 seconds
3) Vol up + Vol down + Power button for 30 seconds
Rinse and repeat until you get the bootloader screen to stay. Mine only stayed after I threw it on a table though, as mentioned in my thread linked here. Haha good luck!
I was afraid you would say that..i bought my phone from best buy and I don't live in the US, don't know if google would let me send it back and even if it would probably take months to send and get a replacement :crying: . I did some research on the forum and numerous people that experience this same problem ( some on samsung devices) blame it on a "stuck" power button.(some suggested repeatedly playing with the power button to try and fix it) I carried it to a store and they looked at it and said it might be the power button without me mentioning it as a possibility, can a stuck power button cause this behavior? some even mentioned taking out the battery and putting it in again. If I open up my nexus would it void my warranty?

holding volume up and plugging it in does nothing, it just continues to loop to the google logo where as volume down brings up the bootloader menu then the phone loops again
The longer you try to fix it yourself, the longer it will take for you to get a new phone... RMA it... It's a hardware failure...
Good Luck!

Oh Np. You need to contact your local LG service centre to claim warranty
Just an update, carried it to a tech shop and as suspected it was indeed the power button, they replaced it and now it's working. The technician said although the button was clicking it kept contact with the board telling the phone to turn off as soon as it turns on which caused the loop. So if anyone is experiencing similar problems you might wanna have that checked. Thanks for the numerous replies :good:

Thanks for reporting, there have been more users with that issue recently. Now you fully confirmed the cause:good:
My nexus 5 went into a bootloop today and after i tried plugging and holding everything for hours i took wjng's advice, held vollume down and power at the same time and slammed it down onto a table and it stayed on the bootloader finally. Time to flash a stock rom and pray i guess.
I was running the latest stock image (MMB29V) since yesterday on my Nexus 5 and today I used the Nexus root toolkit as always to root the device. Well TWRP flashed once and it said it copied the root files to the device. I had it in my pocket for a few minutes and after that it went into a crazy constant boot loop. It will stop eventually but if I keep the charging cable in it won't stop. I cannot get into recovery because I get the "Start" screen but I cannot advance because it reboots too quickly. I have found a few you tube videos where people push the power button like they are playing the old school game "Track and Field" but this does not work for me nor do I think it's a power button issue. I think I stupidly might have hit some kind of button combo while I'm my pocket believe it or not. I pulled the cover off and was hoping to pull the battery but Im not a fan of doing that since its not a simple task. Any help appreciated. This phone is dead to me and that is NOT good. I need to get this working.
TIA
Bill

It quickly restarts. I want to say its not a problem with the power button because it has been fine for a few years now w/out issue and only happened after rooting earlier today. Right now the only way I can even get the phone to turn on is the plug the charging cable in and then the restarting commences. Does it sound like a power button issue? Possibly but its hard to believe, I dunno. Waiting on a call back from Google tech support to see if they are any help.
It could be a power button issue. You'll have to remove the motherboard to find out.
Once removed from the housing, quickly press and release the power button several times in a row using more pressure than normal. While the motherboard is out of the phone, clean around the power button with pure alcohol.

Did NOT want to screw up my phone so I sent it to LG. Took a few weeks but it cost me 78.00 total for them to repair the power button issue. Whatever they replaced also fixed the low volume issue I was experiencing as well so it worked out.
