[Q] Xoom Won't turn on - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New to the forum. Love you guys' work. Been a follower since the G1 days. I got the xoom on Thursday (like a lot of you) and have loved it, until last night. My battery was going low (20% or so) and I used it for about 10 more minutes when the whole thing just shot off. I'm not sure what happened. I tried to charge it and nothing happened. If it was my G1 or Nexus, I would have just pulled the cover off and taken the battery out and rebooted, not so easy on the xoom. I think I might have to take it back, but anyone have any ideas as to how I can get it working again?

exact same thing happened to me, I pressed and held volume up and power and it booted up.

Same problem. Same fix

I just had this happen to me today, so as of March 11 its still an issue. The system appeared to be locked in sleep mode and no amount of pressing or holding the power (or any other) button wakes it up. The little light top right just keeps flashing slowly. It wasn't on a low battery either. lets hope all the other users are savvy enough to search for the answer online. I found it here on xda forum in another thread - hold down power button and volume at the same time. Which interestingly is a trick i wouldn't find in the manual, and i couldnt find an explanation for the blinking light in the manual or PDF guide either. There will be some very very worried xoom owners around until this is fixed.

My xoom does not respond to my touch, so everything seems still alive, and when I hold on the power button it does ask me if I want to turn it off, but since it does not respond to my click, I cannot reboot the system. Same trick as above solved the problem.

More information would be helpful.
1. Does this happened before or after the update.
2. Rooted, modified in any way etc etc...
AFAIK Mine still working fine. I haven't done anything to mine, so is still pretty stock.
At least there's a way to deal with this.

So this just happened to my wifi Xoom. Except the forced reboot method (volume up + power) doesn't get any response. Any quick ideas before I go exchange this at Costco?
edit: This is a completely stock Xoom.

Thanks this fixed mine as well. It's a little unnerving that it wouldn't boot to begin with, though.

Yep had this happen on mine a couple of times now.

Thank you so much! I thought my xoom was bricked!

Yep its only happened once to me since launch day, but power + volume up did fix it. No idea why it happened, havent had any problems since though.

yeah, its a lil scary. i remember when i had it happ3n. glad its working for you.

Had my first Power lost - I think I figured out a trick :)

So I was streaming music through the browser and when I disconnected the phone from the car charger it didnt start up it looked dead, the screen was black, and the power button didnt work but........ I didnt have to take out the battery and restart, I held the volume up button and power for about 10-15 seconds and the phone restarted - like new . So, next time your phone powers off for no reason try holding the volume up and power for 15 secs before you try taking out the battery.
I think just holding the power button does it...don't think you need to hold vol-up

Yup, no need to hold the vol up button. Long press power will do it.

actually, try it while the phone is on.. It's a reboot option... which you cannot do with just the power button alone. I think that's what he experienced.
I don't get a reboot option.
Just had my first "power lost" as well. Except mine was idle, charging overnight. Tried to turn it on but no go. Long press power button only didn't work as well so I had to pull the battery. Thanks for the tip. Why does it do this? Hardware or software problem?
I'm almost sure that its software. Every new phone that omes out has bugs eapecially if u buy it near its release date.
I believe all the bugs will eventually be fixed

Alot of people, including myself, were experiencing this random shutdowns when the first batch of G2x's came out. Only solution was battery pull or exchange. I got tired of pulling the battery andi didn't want to wait for a software patch update to fix the issues so I exchanged it and my current one is fantastic.
Many theories came out regarding the spontaneous random shut downs; overheating, wifi, gps, charging, etc. although, no definite reason as to why this is happening
If you are experiencing this numerous times, you should exchange it if you have the option of doing so

I'm inclined to think it's software, I was running the stock OS for 2 weeks and didn't have a single shutdown, then I flashed eaglesblood and it's been shutting down twice a day. Probably one of the drivers???
I had a power off last night while, charging. I woke up and it was off and power button didn't do anything. I just did a battery pull. Running eagleblood 1.0.3. Also had my first reboot last night

Could be custom software. But even people with stock experienced shutdowns. There was a big thread about shutdowns in the tmobile g2x forums and most of them ran stock.
However, It seems a though this issue is resolving as there is less talking and complaining about it

I live in Northridge, Cal.
My first G2X I screweed up. I installed a p990 rom, and well you know the rest.
Exchanged for another, NO ISSUES!! Ive rooted, CWM, removed some crapware.
I use wifi at home, mixed g/n. wifi at work g, bluetooth for the helmet on the bike.
I havent experienced any random reboots.
My question is this:
COULD it be related to where these phones are shipped to?
NJ vs CA, or east coast/west coast?
Just a thought, without the caffiene in bloodstream yet...

If your thought is correct, then tmo screwed the west side lol. Nah. Im from hawaii and my first g2x was filled with reboots but my second was fine (same manufactured date). So I don't think shipping location is a factor.

[Q] Bricked Nexus S. Faulty power button?

Hi guys.
I noticed a few weeks ago my power button started to work when it felt like it. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would take about 30 presses before it registered I was attempting to use it..
Now it has completely failed.
The phone is currently off, whenever I try to press the power button it never turns on. But as soon as I attach a charger to it (AC and USB), without even pressing the power button, the phone vibrates and the google screen flashes up, but never gets past that screen.
If I hold the volume up button as I attach a charger it attempts to enter recovery/bootloader mode(?), but freezes as soon as it comes on. No buttons work and it requires a battery pull to turn it off.
The phone is also not recognised by my computer, or by odin, or anything.
Not really sure what to do. Would try and flash things back to stock, but can't find a way to do that. Not really sure it would help either?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Oh and I looked through current threads and searched on google but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem :/
It seems, your power button is constantly pressed. Maybe you dropped it? You should try to carefully move the button in every direction instead of pressing it, hopefully it clicks back to its right place. Other option is taking it back to the shop, and get it repaired. It's a hadware problem, so you won't be able to use neither recovery nor the ROM. The bright side is, that probably it's an easily repairable problem, and won't take too long

Stock ICS has a feature to wake the screen using the vol rocker.
And you can search the market for "Lock screen widget" to shut the screen.
In this case you minimize the need for the power button..That what I was doing..

[Q] Power Button problem?

I seem to have a problem with my power button. I think. My phone will occasionally shut off and vibrate once every 2 seconds, as if the power button is being held down. Taking the battery out and putting it back in stops the vibrations, but then after starting to turn on it will go back into the steady vibration.
I've noticed that sometimes when it's turned on it'll go into little fits where the power button menu will pop up rapidly. This usually precedes when it shuts off.
The severity of these "fits" varies. Sometimes it just requires popping the battery out and putting it back in, but sometimes it lasts for hours.
I don't know if it's a power button problem, or something in the wiring. I don't have a case on it, just a stick on skin. If you need anymore information, I'll gladly supply it.
Any information on what is happening and if theres a fix, would be greatly appreciated.

You would have to open up the case and look at it. Could be some debris in there, button could be getting jammed. Few things could be happening.

I know I'm reviving an old thread but I came here trying to find a solution and I figured out what mine was.
It was indeed the power button, I took the phone apart twice, first time not messing with the power button, second time I pressed it quite a few good times and blew on it to try to blow anything out of there and to get my spit in it to lube any parts that needed lube...or what not.
I put it back together and still...same problem, it'd turn on when I put the battery in or plugged in a power source and then roughly 2 seconds later, it'd restart. The most I could get was maybe a full 10 seconds (but never further). But I realized that if I held the power button at the perfect time after the phone vibrated to turn on, it would go those 10 seconds way more often. So I mashed the hell out of my power button and shook and pounded the phone and it booted it up, was able to back up all my stuff and restore it. Now waiting for the replacement.
Why I told this like a story? I don't know...
OMFG this is exactly what is happening to me!!!! So exact. Lol any solution?!?

Same exact thing happened to my girlfriends Infuse, faulty power button. I took it completely apart and tried to clean the contacts between the power button and the motherboard as well as any junk that may have been lodged in the button itself. Unfortunately the cleaning didn't work, what did work is I took the god damn phone and whacked it against the counter top a few good times and it has worked ever since. Do I recommend doing this? NO! [Q] HOX Won't Turn On with Sporadic Red LED

Yesterday, I was using the Navigation app on my phone. It was a busy day, so I think I had left the app running. In my previous experiences with the app, it stays on until I exit the app. Previously, I remember the phone running really hot.
Anyhow, yesterday sometime in the afternoon, I took my phone out and found the screen off. Pushing the power button didn't do anything. So I figure it probably had a drained battery and I plugged it in the wall to charge. About three or four hours later, I pushed the power button again - just to turn on my phone and see if I had any missed texts/calls. Nothing - the screen didn't turn on, but the red LED light was on. So I left it charging through the wall adapter, and went to go do some research about the problem.
Next morning the red LED was flashing. I tried the power button again, but nothing happened. Then I got a little panicky and tried the different button configurations I had read about: holding down the power button for x amount of seconds, holding down the power button and volume down button simultaneously - but again, nothing happened.
Fast forward to tonight - I'm not sure if my phone is charging or not, or if something else sinister is happening to it. I pushed the power button down about a half hour ago, and the red LED turned off. I then, plugged my phone into my computer, and I got a dialog pop-up that said "Device driver was not properly installed" with the driver name "qhsusb_dload".
Any idea what this issue is? Or could you point me to further info somewhere?
Any help is much appreciated!
PS. I got my HTC One X just about 2 and a half months ago at the end of November. My phone isn't rooted, and the most "advanced" thing I did with it was put ADWLauncher on it.

qhsusb_dload usually indicates a hard brick. take it for warranty repair. given what you've described most likely you've had a hardware failure of some sort.
Sounds like you've ended up in qualcom download mode somehow. When you held down power and volume down, was you're phone plugged in? I think I accidentally made it to qdl mode once when my phone was plugged into the wall. Try unplugging power, and press and holding power and volume down, see what happens.. Otherwise you may be able to get help from 18th.abn who seems to know quite a bit about the qualcom download mode. Good luck.

It pains me to read your post because I had the same exact thing months ago. The phone turned off while using navigation and never turned on again. At the time JET didn't exist so there was nothing I could do about it.
Look here and see if it might help your situation and maybe avoid a warranty repair
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982442
I've seen this type of post a few times and makes me think that there's definitely something wrong with the evita that's bricking these phones all on their own. Maybe hardware like someone else suggested so maybe warranty repair might be safer.
Best of luck.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions. It appears my phone is dead, completely. I had high hopes, but now I think I'm wasting energy. I called HTC and they said they'd send me an email with ticket info to return it so they could fix it. But they never sent the email. Now I must chase after them and try to get them to fix my phone. Sigh. I would try JET, but I don't run Linux and don't think I'm as tech savvy as I should be to set it up.
Thanks again!

IMO, if you are bone stock (sounds like you are) its not worth it to mess with JET. Just send the phone to HTC (or your carrier, if they handle warranty matters - they are often easier to deal with than HTC). It may well be a hardware issue, that JET won't fix.

Up and running again, but w/ new phone
Yup, I took it to my carrier (ATT) yesterday and they couldn't do anything with it, so they gave me new phone right there and then, which was great news. Bad news is I have to start from scratch. But at least I've learned to back up early and often.
Not sure if you could have done anything about this as it seems to be a hardware failure

[Q] Is my phone dead?

My phone is bone is stock. It has never been rooted or anything.
It got it wet a few months ago, but it continued to work fine. It's been dropped a couple of times, but has a case.
In the last 2 weeks it has shut off by itself a handful of times, and wouldn't power on unless I pulled the battery.
Last night it shut off, I pulled the battery, and it still wouldn't turn on. Tried a different battery, and nothing. Plugged into the wall, and I got the drained battery symbol, then the almost charged battery symbol, then a blank, and finally after that, the phone would boot. However, as soon as you pull the charging cable the phone shuts off. Also now when you get it to boot up, there is no wifi and no mobile data. I tried booting it from the computer and all I get is the vibration like it wants to turn on, then nothing.
The only thing I have done is a factory reset and it still has the same problems.
I also don't have the latest update from Verizon since I'm in South America. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Please help! Thanks in advance.

It's probably either a bad battery or a broken power button, if you're still under warranty go get it exchanged.

There are YouTube videos that show you how to unstick a power button on the S3. Normally you have to bang it fairly hard against something, search for the video and see if it works for you. If it makes the situation better it's your power button.

Apparently it was the power button I'm suspecting. I pressed on it firmly on the edge of the counter last night, tried to turn it on this morning, and it powered up. Should I replace the power button?
Also I would like to root the phone now, but I think I'll start another thread for that one if I have any questions.
Thanks a ton guys!
