Market place is up and running
There's only 17 applications in the German Marketplace. That's a bit disappointing, considering they have been advertising their Marketplace among developers for half a year now.
I hope that it gets better soon.
How many are there in other countries?
There appears to be a good few apps on there - more than 17 as I look at it - maybe over 50 (im in the UK).
very few free apps - maybe 3?
I think I will wait until im sure what the situation will be with apps purchased and lost due to ROM flashing. Do you get to download again for free?
In the Netherlands only 4 apps, Microsoft Tag, My Phone, Facebook and 'De Telegraaf' (a Dutch newspaper). A bit disapointing...
Guys,
How do you get the application for it? I'm still using the stock ROM that came with my HD.
Cheers.
Well it not live until tomorrow so any apps are a bonus till then.
Yes, even 50 apps is disappointing. There's some 20-30000 apps for Windows Mobile out there and they could only get 50 of them into their Marketplace within 7 months?
Well... it's not even official yet, so let's wait a bit and see what happens.
Not working for me. The cab downloaded and installed but when trying to launch it searches for an update and informs me:
"We encountered an error while trying to reach the Windows Marketplace server. Would you like to try again?"
Have they switched it off again?
Mine installs but then it cant connect because it says the servers are unavailable. hmmmmm
It's still working here.
Could all of you please tell us what country you are in? That would help a lot.

But I don't think that suddenly tomorrow the Marketplace is full of apps. But lets wait and see!

My crystalball says otherwise .
The market place is still working for me (UK)
The imortant thing is quality not quantity. Obviously it's only just launching and WM isn't as sexy as it used to be, so it was always going to be a quieter launch than we'd hope for. However, I'd rather see an app store with 5,000 quality apps instead of one with 200,000 where there's 542 different "oh look an animated glass of beer" apps, a quarter of the apps are to cover the same OS deficiencies, with ultimately the same core 5,000 quality apps that are now so much harder to find.
That said, WM desperately needs both quality and quantity of games if it and the app store are going to make any real return to consumer level awareness. At least due to the OS's heritage we have an incredibly strong portfolio of productivity apps.
I had that same initial response but it worked when I tried second time around. Hopefully they are trying to load as many apps as possible.
Might be smart to submit an app.

As per my post header, I'm in the UK on Vodafone.
Not working
UK O2
Touch Pro
Working in Norway
But only 2 apps. Facebook and Microsoft tag reader
Still working in the UK on T-Mobile.
Just installed MS Tag and the install process is pretty slick and pain free and unobtrusive - thought it was going to launch the usual cab installation interface.
One thing though is that it didn't ask where I would like to install to, Memory or SD Card, hmmm.....
EDIT: Tag reader installed to memory - hope this isn't the case for all apps - there should be an option to set install location.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you install Marketplace on the HD? I am on T-Mobile UK.
Thanks,
Petrov.
I just noticed that Samsung's market finally had more than just two apps in it. This is for the uk, and they look pretty uk specific, but the new apps that just appeared are:
Sky News
Investment week
WH Smith eBooks
(the pre-existing apps were radio companion and blinkx beat)
Just what the Tab needed: another eBook reader. As though we didn't have enough already (and I note that the install screen says it doesn't [yet] sync if you already have a web account).
Any interesting apps in other countries?

Nope, just an app from a german news television named n-tv. Actually there are four apps in appstore.
hello...my Apps
AppRemover (UnInstaller)
Astro (Explorer)
Dolphin Browser HD (Browser)
TuneIn Radio (4 Austria)
Unrar
FlashPlayer
Facebook
Flikie Wallpapers HD
Applanet
Beautiful Widgets (Weather App)
Better Alarmclock Pro
greetinx Cloon

I have my Tab with a Voda SIM in it in UK and all I see is the Companion Radio.
The first day I got my tab, I'm sure I recall there being 2 or 3 other apps, but I was having a serious problem with something and had to hard reset. They never showed up since.
I've installed a couple of the new apps:
The WHSmith app looks pretty enough but it wants me to register to buy a book even if the book I want to buy is 'discounted' by 100% so I haven't yet bothered. A random sample of one book (I shall wear midnight) is £12.61 as a WHSmith eBook, $12.80 Amazon.com Kindle, £8.09 amazon.co.uk Kindle so it doesn't look too promising.
The Sky News app might actually be useful: text stories, most with click through to a (low resolution) video. There's also an option to read the stories out loud though some of the speech synthesis is a bit wayward. One obvious bug is that they've used a font which displays the unicode fallback diamond character instead of a pound sign which for a supposedly UK app with a 'business news' section shows a remarkable lack of testing. Also I'd really like a technology section and the option to turn off 'showbiz'.
One feature I haven't seen elsewhere is the 'Your Report' section that you can use to upload stories to Sky. However they don't get many points for telling me to refer to terms and conditions at skynews.com without actually providing any links.
Is it possible to change the country of samsung apps ? Because i bought my tab on amazon.de but i live in France and i would like to buy or download apps that are available in france.
I think it depends on the SIM
i have a french sim but no french apps...
Seeing as how the SamsungApps app won't even start without a SIM present, it suggests it's checking the locale of the SIM to see what apps are available to the region. I've got nothing whatsoever in mine, presumably since the Tab isn't available in New Zealand.
Yes you can change it. Open the dialer and type in the code:
*#272*YOURIMEI#
Put your IMEI number where it says YOURIMEI and it will allow you to switch country codes. If you change the country code you will lose your stuff. It will be like a system restore so make sure you backup your stuff.

1- Financial Times
2- Visit London Blog
3- Sky news
4- Investment week
5- WHSmith eBooks
6- Blinkx Beat
7- Radio companion
#2 it maybe interesting if it shows events and things going on in London, #-3 I may try (but anything from Rupert Murdoch mouth is not to be trusted)
#7 does not appear the list any more (I installed it just to try it)
Did I mention I hate Rupert Murdoch?,

Yes, bizarrely once you install something it disappears from the list which makes it very confusing. I had another look at the "Sky News" app last night and noticed that all of the sports stories were from November 7th: they've updated them now but it was a bit bizarre seeing their headlines were about F1.

You don't need a keyboard. Once you do that you can select a different code.

There's an app for rooted phones that allows you to change your country so that you see more options in the market.
I used it for EVO, I'll have to to look for it after i wake up a little more but anyone impatient can search the htc supersonic (aka Evo) forums to find it.
My Samsung Tab (VF Germany SIM) now shows 5 Apps including Asphalt 5 HD as a download which I'm doing at the mo. That wasn't shown yesterday.

Showing now for me too.
Seems to be the full version, must be annoying for those people that may have previously bought it!
I think there must be something firware dependent that controls what apps are visible because I had a few Apps on my UK Tab until I upgraded via samfirmware.com to JK5 and now I don't have anything in there but the radio companion.
Anybody else in the UK using a Voda sim and can confirm whether or not any other apps are visible?
Mines got a UK orange sim in it, do they filter it by network too or just location..?
Me and the wife both have the samsung focus, both with the Mango update. On her "apps screen" her applications show in alphabetical order, with a small letter tile to separate each group of apps. Mine does not? Any ideals why?
she has a higher number of apps installed in her phone.
Yup, mine went to the "A" "B" "C" listings after I hit x # of installed apps.. Kind of freaked me out at first.. Cool thing is you can tap any letter and it will bring up a ABC... listing "chart" so you can jump to any subset..
Alphabetical search is activated only when you have more than 40 apps installed on your phone.
Sorry if this is covered elsewhere. My S6 is new. I loaded two apps yesterday and one of them brought an icon I cannot delete - says Nike Shoes for Cheap! A. Has anyone experience about where it came from? I expect more to show up and I want them gone before they get here. B. Why can I not erase/delete it? C. Is there an app which gives me control of my phone?

Which region? How far? City, country? Would be nice we could change that (like tinder).
Only sums user apps. System apps (stock or integrated by ourselves) are not summarized. They - when available as an user app at least somewhere else - should also be considered.
Could have an option to automatically check if app is available on Play Store, F-DROID, IzzyOnDroid, Amazon, Apk mirror, Aptoid, other popular app stores,....and as a "G" to Google for packed name when nowhere....and show that with little icons on each app, so we just click to open it where we want.
When I search for "Hot Apps Nearby" on Play Store it is not listed, even after I have it installed. I have to open exactly app link to grab it.
@steiger I tried the new version, with distance adjustment.
Bugs:
1. settings is not saved. Every time you open app distance goes to default 100Km
2. You do not check if GPS is on or not. If off, the app list does not load and seems your app is malfunctioning.
Feature request:
3. The 200Km limit is probably ok for small countries, states. But not for huge ones (Id like to have an idea of popular apps not only in my city). Please add a 500Km and 1000Km steps afterwards. Or a whole 5000Km limit.
4. System apps, like I wrote on previous comment.
5. app stores check and links when available, like I wrote on previous comment.
Thanks! Your app has a nice potential! (To user and devs)
Thank you @wilsonhlacerda, your review was superb. I agreed with every single one of your suggestions - some, I must admit, I naturally already had in mind like radius adjusting.
Will roll out a new version today with a lot of your suggestions:
1. GPS Check
2. Increased search range (I'm being conservative in the first months, though, because of infrastructure prices. Will see how it goes.)
3. Nice splash screen so the app doesn't seem "stuck" when sometimes opening with a slow phone or slow network connection.
Maybe 4. System apps
I also loved the suggestion to check for other play stores availability but that's slightly more complicated to implement and will take more time.
Thanks again for your input.
P.S. you are absolutely right about the cause of not loading lists is GPS unavailable. Nice catch!

By the way, are you sure the distance measures among users you do are correct? I'm really in doubt.... If I choose 1 or 2Km I can see only 1 user (me, that's ok). If I choose 6km I get 5 users! Same of 200Km! Well, seems something is wrong or I'm "lucky" to have this quantity of users very close to me.

I almost forgot:
I had posted your app on AppHunt. It got some attention there.
If US market (and some Europe and Asia) is relevant to you, I do suggest you to post about it on Reddit, specially on subreddits android and androidapps. Maybe doing a giveaway of some promotion codes (check what other devs did there with their apps if you are not familiar).

I'm fairly sure. I use Geofire in other apps and never noticed a problem. Maybe
1. You were lucky
2. If you cleaned your data / uninstalled and reinstalled the app, you will count as a new user.
Nevertheless, I will investigate the possible issue, thanks.

Hey, thank you very much!
I'm more or less familiar with promotion codes but In App Purchase API is still kind of messy in my opinion. Hard to implement right.

That's because it's rankings are still low (and ASO is not so well optimized yet).
When I search on the desktop I can already find it in the fifth or something row.
See, now it is quite reachable via numerous keywords (such as hot apps, popular apps...). Hot apps nearby gives a #1
