Which region? How far? City, country? Would be nice we could change that (like tinder).
Only sums user apps. System apps (stock or integrated by ourselves) are not summarized. They - when available as an user app at least somewhere else - should also be considered.
Could have an option to automatically check if app is available on Play Store, F-DROID, IzzyOnDroid, Amazon, Apk mirror, Aptoid, other popular app stores,....and as a "G" to Google for packed name when nowhere....and show that with little icons on each app, so we just click to open it where we want.
When I search for "Hot Apps Nearby" on Play Store it is not listed, even after I have it installed. I have to open exactly app link to grab it.

@steiger I tried the new version, with distance adjustment.
Bugs:
1. settings is not saved. Every time you open app distance goes to default 100Km
2. You do not check if GPS is on or not. If off, the app list does not load and seems your app is malfunctioning.
Feature request:
3. The 200Km limit is probably ok for small countries, states. But not for huge ones (Id like to have an idea of popular apps not only in my city). Please add a 500Km and 1000Km steps afterwards. Or a whole 5000Km limit.
4. System apps, like I wrote on previous comment.
5. app stores check and links when available, like I wrote on previous comment.
Thanks! Your app has a nice potential! (To user and devs)

Thank you @wilsonhlacerda, your review was superb. I agreed with every single one of your suggestions - some, I must admit, I naturally already had in mind like radius adjusting.
Will roll out a new version today with a lot of your suggestions:
1. GPS Check
2. Increased search range (I'm being conservative in the first months, though, because of infrastructure prices. Will see how it goes.)
3. Nice splash screen so the app doesn't seem "stuck" when sometimes opening with a slow phone or slow network connection.
Maybe 4. System apps
I also loved the suggestion to check for other play stores availability but that's slightly more complicated to implement and will take more time.
Thanks again for your input.
P.S. you are absolutely right about the cause of not loading lists is GPS unavailable. Nice catch!

By the way, are you sure the distance measures among users you do are correct? I'm really in doubt.... If I choose 1 or 2Km I can see only 1 user (me, that's ok). If I choose 6km I get 5 users! Same of 200Km! Well, seems something is wrong or I'm "lucky" to have this quantity of users very close to me.

I almost forgot:
I had posted your app on AppHunt. It got some attention there.
If US market (and some Europe and Asia) is relevant to you, I do suggest you to post about it on Reddit, specially on subreddits android and androidapps. Maybe doing a giveaway of some promotion codes (check what other devs did there with their apps if you are not familiar).

I'm fairly sure. I use Geofire in other apps and never noticed a problem. Maybe
1. You were lucky
2. If you cleaned your data / uninstalled and reinstalled the app, you will count as a new user.
Nevertheless, I will investigate the possible issue, thanks.

I'm more or less familiar with promotion codes but In App Purchase API is still kind of messy in my opinion. Hard to implement right.

That's because it's rankings are still low (and ASO is not so well optimized yet).
When I search on the desktop I can already find it in the fifth or something row.

See, now it is quite reachable via numerous keywords (such as hot apps, popular apps...). Hot apps nearby gives a #1

Also, app naming FAIL!
Well, since they only tested 30 apps and won't release the names of the ones they tested, only saying that they are "the most popular", personally I don't buy it.
And the information these apps are sending out is primarily geolocation. Well, no ****. If an app wants your location and you don't think it should have it, it's either using it for ads or you should decline to install the app and just send an email to the dev asking him why he needs that information.

With explanation where to get it from http://www.appanalysis.org/
A very well-written reply by "Steven Knox" on The Register, demonstrating how this 'research' is simply a pile of intentionally-misleading statistical rubbish:
By selecting only from applications that access both personal data and the internet, they're overstating the significance of their study by about 3x. Furthermore, their summaries blur this distinction unnecessarily.
Specifically, their FAQ says "We studied just over 8% of the top 50 popular free applications in each category that had access to privacy sensitive information in order to get a sense of the behaviors of these applications." Since there were 22 categories at the time they did the study, that would imply (22*50=1,100 * 8% =) 88 applications. However, they actually only tested 30, because of the 1,100 top 50 applications only (from the PDF) "roughly a third of the applications (358 of the 1,100 applications) require Internet permissions along with permissions to access
either location, camera, or audio data." -- meaning that the other 742 apps don't have the necessary permissions to play badly. The clause "..that had access to privacy sensitive information in order to get a sense of the behaviors of these applications." from the FAQ is grammatically ambiguous in this case (it may refer to "applications" or "category"), and not specific enough to indicate that over 2/3 of the applications are (relatively) safe by dint of not having the necessary permissions.
They also didn't include in their study apps from 10 of the 22 categories, but they don't explain whether that was due to a) there not being any or enough applications in those categories that required internet and personal data permissions, b) a conscious choice to focus on the other 12 categories, or c) the results of random selection (with an explanation of why they did not use a stratified sample).
Once you factor back in the applications they ignored, the numbers don't look quite so bad. Assuming their sample was representative, 2/3 of the 358, or about 239 applications of the top 1,100 of the time use personal data suspiciously. That's about 21.7% or just over 1 in 5 -- still significant, but a far cry from 2 out of 3. In fact, the worst case maximum is actually 358 of 1,100 or just under 1 in 3 (32.45%) because they are as mentioned above the only ones that actually acquire the permissions necessary to do anything "suspicious".
I understand why both the researchers and the reporter used the 2/3 figure -- you all believe you have to sell the point as hard as possible*. But the real story is that it's likely that at least 1 in 5 Android Apps use private data "suspiciously" -- and that number is still high enough to cause concern and to justify the further use of tools like TaintDroid. It's a pity you didn't trust the facts enough to avoid the unnecessary sensationalism.
*I am assuming, here, that Mr. Goodin did actually read and digest the paper as I did, rather than simply picking out the figures from the study, the FAQ, or a press release.

good spot. But one in ten woolf be too many. The point is we should have more fine grained control and transparency off what apps do over the net, and we can't, by design.

We need to develop a shim that reports modified IMEI/SIM data for different apps. IMO, very few apps need that information. We may not be able to keep all those apps from sending our private information, but we can make that information useless if it appears that we all are using the same IMEI/SIM...

if you are rooted. With Root Explorer go to /data/system/ and open accounts.db you might be surprised what you find in it... Some people it will be fine for but mine it shows my exchange email and password in plain text and a few others show up as plain text has well...Its not geo they are worried about (for the most part) and...this file has been known about for awhile
Don't worry though unless your downloaded android specific virus holding apps you wont have any problem. And if your getting all your apps legally through the market then its no big deal =) and if your pirating them...well I don't feel bad for you...

I found this app on android market and i have tried it. This is a great app and it does what it says!
It warns in case of an incoming collision. It also shows the distance of the car in front of you.
And it can takes snapshots at a touch of your finger.
But one other great feature is that it tells you where you have parked using google maps and by taking a photo of what the camera last saw.
Im am not the developer of this app and i am not promoting. This is a free app that i thought it is cool to share.
Cheers.

Ads in the Notification Area.
Dont update to the newest Version. (around 9. Mai 2012)
You will receive at random times push Ads in the Notification Area without accutaly having started the app. There is absolutly no hint to which programm is responsible for them until you uninstall iOnRoad and they stop. Very annoying and the reason for its recent negativ rating. I hope they are scrambling to fix this and might have fixed it already but I would just stay away from this app. The reason for my disgust ist that the developer does not seem to find it important to inform customers about his error or has done it on purpose. Either way is the wrong way.
Here is the mail I got back from iOnRoad Support Team. Thats what got me mad but to be fair my support request was not very diplomatic. For that it was probably acctualy a preaty calm answear.
Hi,
If you do not wish to get the ads you can upgrade to the pro
version here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.picitup.iOnRoad.pro
Or
disable them in the "About iOnRoad" section in iOnRoad's settings.
Best regards,

I wish they would make the Rating system more precise. There are a bunch of factors that could help in making decisions.
Overral App Rating
Overral Rating of the Developer
Version Rating
Another thing I would not mind seeing as a Customer is a precise reason why a App needs certain Access Rights. That would maybe stop Wallpaper Programms to request about every access right there is for every other reason then the app was acctualy intended for.
i guess you are right, but if you actually disable ads from settings do they appear again? i can not test. i have moved away from android until Galaxy S3
a cool application, since i cant drive.. and slow connection to connect to gps too, maybe i use it later..

Well I am not sure the developer even understands what Ads we are all talking about. He either does not give a .... or he thinks everything is normal and we are talking about the normal Ads in the Programm. Either way over the past 2 days he earned himself over 100 1 Star Ratings for the App. It would probably be higher if People would even know that the Ads are comming from the iOnRoad App. If I would be him I would pull the Mai 9th Version off the Market and revert back to the last version that worked.

[App] Rate My Picture – give scores to people's self portraits

Hello,
I'm hoping to find users that will help me test an app that I created recently.
In this app you can rate the pictures of people with 1 to 5 stars, depending on how much you like it.
I tried to make it an easy-to-use and fast app by using a minimalistic ICS-like user interface, pre-loading of images etc.
I'm using the camera intent and Media Store to allow people to upload their own pictures and it seems like this may behave differently depending on the Android version you use (custom Camera apps etc.).
So I hope some beta testers might clear the situation.
The app has no ads and it's permissions only ask for "full internet access" (to load images, store ratings) and "SD card access" (sadly you need this to retrieve pictures from the gallery intent).
Download link (or use the attached file): http://pollr.org/rmp
Best regards
Florian
I installed and it and used it for a bit. I'll use it more once more pictures are uploaded I started seeing duplicates. Hopefully I will be able to add pics from my picasa gallery. It just FC's now.
But good start.
App works very well, fairly fast and looks great. Lots of duplicates but that's something that would be fixed over time. Have yet to upload my picture but be prepared for alot of 5 star ratings lol
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
No option to choose which sex you want to rate?
Edit: had no trouble uploading a photo from QuickPic on my SGN.
Thanks for your feedback guys
Regarding the gallery problem I've redone the whole thing (not using a "select image and crop" intent but a "select image" followed by a crop intent) and it should reduce force closes and problems with incompatible gallery apps.
It would be great if you could try again (especially Knether) – I just need to know if you can select a photo and if you can crop it (or if it just appears as a preview without cropping), you don't have to upload it
I updated the app in the first post ( http://pollr.org/rmp )
Duplicate pictures shouldn't appear until you've seen all pictures (then you'll see random duplicates), I fixed that!
And @WiredPirate: You're right, I will implement an option to only rate men/women
Sorry for double posting, but there's a new version with gender selection.
First post or http://pollr.org/rmp
Also there have been quite some picture uploads today (more than yesterday) and no complains here, so I'm hoping it works
Thanks again!

I didn't release it on the Market because at first I wanted to make sure there aren't any major bugs (hence this thread).
But it is on the market now: https://market.android.com/details?id=de.fheft.ratemypicture
Sadly, all the testing is useless against irrational 1 star ratings: "Bad This is a fake app , same photos"

Man, that sucks (and drives me nuts) when people 1-star an app thats free! Especially when an app is as nice looking and functional as yours, usually just because they dont understand something. I downloaded the app and left a 5-star review, hopefully that'll help balance it out. By the way, my bit of feedback in the meantime:
After selecting which gender to choose, it goes away and I cant select it unless I restart the app (Edit: I realized I can hit the stock menu button, but please see suggestion 3)
I get some "failed to load connection" and "failed to upload photo" notices even though everything worked fine
In the spirit of ICS design, I would remove the Info button from the top right, and replace it with the ActionBar menu button, and add a few options (Choose gender, Info, Report, etc.) under that dropdown.
I know this may not be 100% right, but I strongly think you should populate the photos with 500-1,000 more attractive (but not professional) men and women. It's cheating a little but it will be very hard to create a userbase from limited photos which currently has a lot of not-so-attractive people (I would know, I'm not-so-attractive myself).
I hope thats useful and wish you best of luck with the app (you can always re-release it so dont fret too much). And if you have a moment, it would help me greatly if you can rate my free app to offset 1-star reviews like "great but cant convert negative temp" or "cant use comma only decimal"). I swear, paid users are always more satisfied than free ones..
Thanks a lot for your reply! I will definitely think about how to implement your suggestions, they're great!
And you're right, the free users seem to be the ones that don't read descriptions or think about ANYTHING before doing it/rating an app...
I wanted to have a look at your app as well, but the Market website tells me it's not compatible with any of my devices (Galaxy S2, Nexus One, both 2.3.x)... although the description says it's >2.2?

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done, so please let me know if you find any bugs or if you have any suggestions. Your feedback is extremely valuable. Thanks!
Edit: Just wanted to let you guys know that I have release an update(1.09) with cache implementation and a slider to control the effect of filters on the source image. Many people have been informing that the filters are too strong, so I hope this will solve that problem. And thanks a lot for all the support and feedback!

Great work! Good filters, smooth UI and crisp photos on the endline. Keep up the good work. :good:

Definitely not my kind of app, but works OK. The best thing I see about it is that it doesn't need internet connection to work - unlike the more famous competitor's app. Big plus for caring about users' privacy.

I am not asking for the permission in my manifest , but I am using tensorflow library and for some reason, it is asking for the READ_PHONE_STATE. Here is the log from the merged manifest
uses-permission#android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE
IMPLIED from "........"/app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml:2:1-55:12 reason: tensorflow.contrib.android has a targetSdkVersion < 4
But I have seen that this permission isn't really used (doesn't ask for the permission in Marshmallow or Nougat).

My guess is since its still new it might take some time to move the app up the ranks. For me, I can see the app when I search Pierra but after 15-20 apps. Hopefully, that will improve with time. Searching for the app via the package name shows it instantly though - com.saha.pierra

[APP][BETA][4.4+] Beta testers wanted!

Hey all!
I have an old app (Last compiled when MM was just released. It worked fine for years, minus user issues.
Well, the government API I connect to changed, and didn't announce it properly. So, I had to make a LOT of changes to my app because of all the changes in Android!
Would like to poke anyone and make sure it works on a devices other than my N and O devices. If interested, it would be appreciated. Can get the APK (only ~4mb) here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IU102R0SDrSSF1tmU5P_RaGMAIVIEqE- It's built in debug mode (not release) and all I'm interested in is crashes at the point. If you crash it, just forward me the logs.
The app is a mapping utility for surveyors to help them find gov't survey markers. The main app need Location permission. If you use the camera or try to record notes, it requires Write External Media and Camera permissions.
I can't seem to test on AVD (which I did try) because they complain that the Play Services version is too low on the AVDs I tried lowering the requirements, but ran into issues, so I'm hoping that isn't a dealbreaker for v4.4 and v5.0 devices.
Thanks!

Kinda. Anyone can download it an install it. Google maps will load, the app will run no matter what: Your GPS location is, Your device config, Your culture/language settings are (thought app will be in English only, sorry!).
The map will not pull any data points, though, unless you are zoomed in on an area over the US or it's territories. Zooming in over EU, for example, should not cause the app to crash, you just won't get any markers displayed. (The map SHOULD default on first-launch to be in the US, regardless of where your GPS location reports you to be.
And for those paranoid (yes, like me), my app isn't doing any specific tracking of ANY information. I'm not sending anything out to the US Govt's website except the view bounds of the map. I know they process the location given, but do not know if they store it for future use. Google Maps, well, you'll have to check with google. No POSTs are ever made, only GET requests. Account info IS looked up on your phone to only check to see if you purchased the offline feature addition. No ad tracking, no ads at all. (I don't like any of that ****, won't have it in my app.)
