Samsung Apps updated - Galaxy Tab Themes and Apps

I just noticed that Samsung's market finally had more than just two apps in it. This is for the uk, and they look pretty uk specific, but the new apps that just appeared are:
Sky News
Investment week
WH Smith eBooks
(the pre-existing apps were radio companion and blinkx beat)
Just what the Tab needed: another eBook reader. As though we didn't have enough already (and I note that the install screen says it doesn't [yet] sync if you already have a web account).
Any interesting apps in other countries?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App

Nope, just an app from a german news television named n-tv. Actually there are four apps in appstore.

hello...my Apps
AppRemover (UnInstaller)
Astro (Explorer)
Dolphin Browser HD (Browser)
TuneIn Radio (4 Austria)
Unrar
FlashPlayer
Facebook
Flikie Wallpapers HD
Applanet
Beautiful Widgets (Weather App)
Better Alarmclock Pro
greetinx Cloon

I have my Tab with a Voda SIM in it in UK and all I see is the Companion Radio.
The first day I got my tab, I'm sure I recall there being 2 or 3 other apps, but I was having a serious problem with something and had to hard reset. They never showed up since.

I've installed a couple of the new apps:
The WHSmith app looks pretty enough but it wants me to register to buy a book even if the book I want to buy is 'discounted' by 100% so I haven't yet bothered. A random sample of one book (I shall wear midnight) is £12.61 as a WHSmith eBook, $12.80 Amazon.com Kindle, £8.09 amazon.co.uk Kindle so it doesn't look too promising.
The Sky News app might actually be useful: text stories, most with click through to a (low resolution) video. There's also an option to read the stories out loud though some of the speech synthesis is a bit wayward. One obvious bug is that they've used a font which displays the unicode fallback diamond character instead of a pound sign which for a supposedly UK app with a 'business news' section shows a remarkable lack of testing. Also I'd really like a technology section and the option to turn off 'showbiz'.
One feature I haven't seen elsewhere is the 'Your Report' section that you can use to upload stories to Sky. However they don't get many points for telling me to refer to terms and conditions at skynews.com without actually providing any links.

Is it possible to change the country of samsung apps ? Because i bought my tab on amazon.de but i live in France and i would like to buy or download apps that are available in france.

I think it depends on the SIM

i have a french sim but no french apps...

Seeing as how the SamsungApps app won't even start without a SIM present, it suggests it's checking the locale of the SIM to see what apps are available to the region. I've got nothing whatsoever in mine, presumably since the Tab isn't available in New Zealand.

Yes you can change it. Open the dialer and type in the code:
*#272*YOURIMEI#
Put your IMEI number where it says YOURIMEI and it will allow you to switch country codes. If you change the country code you will lose your stuff. It will be like a system restore so make sure you backup your stuff.

1- Financial Times
2- Visit London Blog
3- Sky news
4- Investment week
5- WHSmith eBooks
6- Blinkx Beat
7- Radio companion
#2 it maybe interesting if it shows events and things going on in London, #-3 I may try (but anything from Rupert Murdoch mouth is not to be trusted)
#7 does not appear the list any more (I installed it just to try it)
Did I mention I hate Rupert Murdoch?,

Yes, bizarrely once you install something it disappears from the list which makes it very confusing. I had another look at the "Sky News" app last night and noticed that all of the sports stories were from November 7th: they've updated them now but it was a bit bizarre seeing their headlines were about F1.

There's an app for rooted phones that allows you to change your country so that you see more options in the market.
I used it for EVO, I'll have to to look for it after i wake up a little more but anyone impatient can search the htc supersonic (aka Evo) forums to find it.

My Samsung Tab (VF Germany SIM) now shows 5 Apps including Asphalt 5 HD as a download which I'm doing at the mo. That wasn't shown yesterday.

Showing now for me too.
Seems to be the full version, must be annoying for those people that may have previously bought it!

I think there must be something firware dependent that controls what apps are visible because I had a few Apps on my UK Tab until I upgraded via samfirmware.com to JK5 and now I don't have anything in there but the radio companion.
Anybody else in the UK using a Voda sim and can confirm whether or not any other apps are visible?

Mines got a UK orange sim in it, do they filter it by network too or just location..?

Market place is up and running
There's only 17 applications in the German Marketplace. That's a bit disappointing, considering they have been advertising their Marketplace among developers for half a year now.
I hope that it gets better soon.
How many are there in other countries?
There appears to be a good few apps on there - more than 17 as I look at it - maybe over 50 (im in the UK).
very few free apps - maybe 3?
I think I will wait until im sure what the situation will be with apps purchased and lost due to ROM flashing. Do you get to download again for free?
In the Netherlands only 4 apps, Microsoft Tag, My Phone, Facebook and 'De Telegraaf' (a Dutch newspaper). A bit disapointing...
Guys,
How do you get the application for it? I'm still using the stock ROM that came with my HD.
Cheers.
Well it not live until tomorrow so any apps are a bonus till then.
Yes, even 50 apps is disappointing. There's some 20-30000 apps for Windows Mobile out there and they could only get 50 of them into their Marketplace within 7 months?
Well... it's not even official yet, so let's wait a bit and see what happens.
Not working for me. The cab downloaded and installed but when trying to launch it searches for an update and informs me:
"We encountered an error while trying to reach the Windows Marketplace server. Would you like to try again?"
Have they switched it off again?
Mine installs but then it cant connect because it says the servers are unavailable. hmmmmm
It's still working here.
Could all of you please tell us what country you are in? That would help a lot.

My crystalball says otherwise .
The market place is still working for me (UK)
The imortant thing is quality not quantity. Obviously it's only just launching and WM isn't as sexy as it used to be, so it was always going to be a quieter launch than we'd hope for. However, I'd rather see an app store with 5,000 quality apps instead of one with 200,000 where there's 542 different "oh look an animated glass of beer" apps, a quarter of the apps are to cover the same OS deficiencies, with ultimately the same core 5,000 quality apps that are now so much harder to find.
That said, WM desperately needs both quality and quantity of games if it and the app store are going to make any real return to consumer level awareness. At least due to the OS's heritage we have an incredibly strong portfolio of productivity apps.
I had that same initial response but it worked when I tried second time around. Hopefully they are trying to load as many apps as possible.
Might be smart to submit an app.

As per my post header, I'm in the UK on Vodafone.
Not working
UK O2
Touch Pro
Working in Norway
But only 2 apps. Facebook and Microsoft tag reader
Still working in the UK on T-Mobile.
Just installed MS Tag and the install process is pretty slick and pain free and unobtrusive - thought it was going to launch the usual cab installation interface.
One thing though is that it didn't ask where I would like to install to, Memory or SD Card, hmmm.....
EDIT: Tag reader installed to memory - hope this isn't the case for all apps - there should be an option to set install location.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you install Marketplace on the HD? I am on T-Mobile UK.
Thanks,
Petrov.

UK 3.1 Update

can anyone confirm this?
http://www.motorola-xoom.co.uk/andr...out&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Yes I can, that is how I reported my experience on the Motorway forum, now running UK 3g 3.1.
Me Too...
Two updates rolled out today. The first was a simple update (maybe required update to get the full one to work but it was marked optional) followed by the 3.1 update (which was marked as important)
Update Details:
XOOM: MZ601 (3G)
Android version: 3.1
Firmware version: GAS_EMEA_UCAEVRSTURTCOREE_P045
Baseband version: N_01.83.35P
Baseband configuration version: UCAEVEUB1B88EU03C.0R
Kernel version: 2.6.36.3-00010-g3139c20 / [email protected] #1
Build number: H.6.3-25-5
No Google Books included (you can download the apk elsewhere on this forum), but Movie Studio is there.
Hi all,
Mine arrived today for my UK Xoom MZ601 with exactly the same details as the above poster will report back later how its all working.
Marc
Got my update. On the 10th August.
Loaded in about 5 minutes and kept all my programme's and settings.
Free bluetooth mouse now works.
Hdmi out to large screen TV is brilliant.
Usb is still not fully functional ie. will not work with flash drives or hard disks but ok with thing like usb mouse and cameras.
Can't say I've noticed much different in speed, its a little better.
Browser use to crash all the time on 3.01, its much more stable now.
Micro SD is now working and can transfer files from internal sd to external sd but not from PC to external sd via usb cable.
Music player will still not fetch art work from the internet without external programme. ( yes to those in the USA, that's how we spell it)
Google maps has a problem with sometimes not zooming in closer than 1000ft unless I change from terrain view to satellite view (or the reverse).
Camera setting do not reverse if the tablet is turned 180° but the last taken picture does.
Still no software volume slider. (Not a problem but would be nice).
When using standard browser on the xda-developers website cannot use the normal search facility have to use advanced search. ( don't know if that's xda's web problem or the browser.
And last but not least, there is a big typing delay when using the browser (as reported by others)
That's all I can think of at the moment endless YOU can think of anything.
Since updating, mine seems to eat through the battery quicker! Anyone else getting that?
marketplace seems almost empty
Got my 3.1 update yesterday but when you go into the marketplace, categories and say business, all I can see is 8 top paid apps and 8 top free and no way to see all the other apps in this category! Am I missing something?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Will keep an eye on my battery levels over the next few days and see what happens.
As to the market, there are categorys on the right hand side or you can search for programmes at the top

thanks for the suggestion but my problem is when I enter a category, say business, all I see are 8 paid apps and 8 free apps and as we both know there are much more than that but that's all I can see with no way of browsing to all the other apps in that category.
hi jscsltd
As stated in my previous mail at the top next to the picture of the magnifying glass, type in what type of programme you are looking for ie. networking.
By the way I am only a junior member.
Have now revised my opinion of the browser, it still keeps crashing to much.
Thanks again for yor help but my problem is in just browsing the apps in a category and only seeing the 8 top free business apps with no way of browsing any more as you can on a phone.
Browser seems much more stable and faster with no crashes yet.
Ok I understand now each category should show all programmers under that category not just the top paid and the top free ones.
Maybe its like that because like an iceberg there's far more underneath than one can handle.

He he, you could be right.
So its not just me with the problem.
My work around is to browse using the appbrain app.
Re battery problem
Can't say I have noticed any difference in battery use, seems to be lasting a long as it was before the update. Having said that I have not actually timed it its just a guess over the last six days of use.
@jscsltd
That is the new layout for the market next to where it says free or paid apps there is an arrow click on it and you will see all the apps by just scrolling down. Hope that resolves your issue as at least that is how it works on my Xoom 3.1.
Marc
Yes Dogmann I've seen that as well, seams it has only been enabled recently, but on mine not all sections have arrows next to them. Maybe its an ongoing project that's not yet finished.

NCAA March Madness Live

So NCAA is promising us an Android app that will be able to stream live games right on your phone. Starting this year streaming live game access will cost a one time fee of $3.99. You should get an automated reply with the access code and how to set up an account.
If the Android app is similar to the iOS one it will still allow you to do quite a bit without a subscription if you don't want to pay $3.99 once the promo above runs out. This is from the iTunes description:
NEW for 2012: live game radio of all 67 games

To access live video content, the OS range is 2.2 to 2.3.X, need to support Flash with at least an ARMv7
processor. Please note that not all devices which run a 2.2 OS support Flash.

Provided the app is free I will be posting an apk from Titanium as soon as it lands in the market just in case it happens to be restricted to the above devices only. I guess we will see if the app will check build.prop or root access, and also if it will work on Honeycomb/ICS since they don't appear to be supported.

Any progress? None of my devices are eligible. Thanks.
Here is the app from Titanium attached, its inside a zip file to avoid the apk size limit. It doesn't seem to be too strict on unofficial devices as it installed fine on my HP Touchpad with CM9. Unfortunately there is no tablet UI but the stretch to fill screen compatibility mode in ICS works, so tablet users won't be stuck with a tiny app and possibly tiny video. There are no games on now so I can't test video but everything else in the app is smooth. Hopefully it lets rooted devices in, I didn't get any issues launching the app.
Kindle Fire confirmed
Preliminary report is that the app is working great on a stock Kindle Fire. Thank you!
Works well on my Kyocera Echo....UI even looks good with Dual screen mode. Thanks for posting the APK. Paid for the App and then found my device was not support.
March Madness Live - working on Galaxy S2
Thank you for posting the apk file. I just installed it on my Galaxy S2 and it appears to work fine even though the device is not supported.

The app was definitely made for a phone, but it's working just fine on my TF101.
I was able to install from the Market just fine on a TF101. No sideloading required. Running CM9 Nightly.

Get the code associated with an account aand log in to the app. After that we will have to see if video works. I will be testing it on my GB stock rooted D3 tonight since there are games on. I expect it to work, I may possibly have to run ota unroot. But what I really want to see is how my ics touchpad with cm9 does. Hopefully video works but I'm not getting my hopes up.

OK the first game has started so here is an update.
Its working through my Droid 3 pretty well. It does not care about root. Video quality isn't the best especially when viewed over HDMI. But at least HDMI output is working even if it looks bad. Be patient when waiting for the game to appear. There will be a commercial first before it lets you in to watch and some black screen in between.
Now my Touchpad. Its running CM9/ICS and its a tablet. When you go to watch the game a browser prompt comes up unlike GB which just starts playing the video. I allowed it to open in the default browser and a flash plugin came up on a ncaa.com page. It played the commercial and then went black. Since the app stops video when it is pushed to the background chances are once the browser appears to play the ad, it never gets the redirect to the live stream.
I was able to use the desktop player on my Touchpad by going to http://www.ncaa.com/mml/player/console.html in the regular ICS browser using a desktop user agent. Once logged in via the flash applet I was able to watch games but the video only worked in full screen. It was a little laggy getting there since this is a big flash applet made for desktops. The video quality looks great though on a tablet and once I got to full screen there was little frame dropping. It may not be that way on lower end tablets though, but this method should work on the Galaxy Nexus. I attached an image of it from my Touchpad.
EDIT: Tried it in Dolphin Browser on my GB Droid 3 and its working okay, dropping frames a bit more than the Touchpad but still watchable.
on my Nexus, i am not able to type in my password in the login box. The characters seem to be overwriting each other. i tried with the normal browser, and dolphin, same result. both using desktop agent. WTF, this app is pissing me off!

Same problem for me. Not a Nexus, but Captivate running CM9 alpha. Probably going to flash to stock until tournament is over. Also same problem on TF101, but if I can't get that to work no big deal. Gotta have it on the phone since I work nights. Pretty sad that they don't support ICS at all. I don't seem to recall app devs having this much of a problem when we went from Froyo to Gingerbread. I guess it goes to show just how much different ICS really is under the hood, and not just a pretty UI.

AT&T One X Debloat / Freeze List

Hello all,
I didn't see one here yet so I thought I would bring the idea over from some of the older Samsung forum topics Ive frequented before. Id like to provide, with your help a list of approved / OK to freeze apps to help our phones be more spyware/adware free. Allowing less bloat apps (cough yellowpages) and even hopefully extend battery life if even slightly. You can disable some apps via settings, or freeze them in Titanium backup (if you disable them they show up as frozen automatically in TiBu.
So Far I have:
Amazon Kindle
AT&T Address Book
AT&T Code Scanner
AT&T Contact syncMLProvider
AT&T Contact syncMLService
AT&T Hotspots
AT&T Navigator
AT&T Ready to Go
CityID
Device Help
Flickr
FlickrAPIEngine
HTCLinkifyDispatcher (Allows link choices Apple cockblocked, breaks some functionality like links in friendstream)
JETCET PRINT
JETCET PRINT Resources
Live TV
MOG Music
SoundHound
Top HD Games
TuneIn Radio
Yellow Pages
YPmobile
If you guys have any more to add please post below and I will add when I can between work and my hobbies.
Thanks!
There was one, but it got buried somewhere on this forum, so I'm sure it's welcome.

Mystery SMS to China?

So I get my phone bill, and note that there are 4 sms messages to Chinese phone number 8615012811576 all on one day.
I don't remember intentionally texting a phone number in China, so am wondering if an app would do this for some sort of sign-in or somesuch, a trojan, or what.
Searching the internet tells me nothing about this number so I guess it's not happening to others.
A week before there was an sms to a UK number, but it was easy to learn online that MIUI Cloud account does that when one installs MIUI, which I did then, for a few minutes of trial run.
The Chinese numbers were texted while I used a recent LOS N derivative, so unlikely it was the ROM--I'm more wondering if one of my apps would have done it, and perplexed that the number isn't already spoken of on the web.
Oh..., I remember reading that QuickPic started sending data after they were bought by Cheetah Mobile. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Maybe I uninstalled it/installed Piktures/uninstalled Piktures/reinstalled QuickPic right about then. That would have been because QuickPic can Wifi Direct with itself on other devices, and I don't know any other gallery that will do that, among some other nice features.
So now installed the "Pre" Cheetah version. Dunno if that was the case, but will keep eyes open.

No, I meant "phone bill." That's what a bill from a carrier is typically called in the states. It's a carry-over from days of yore, when these things were called "phones", and the people that provided the services through the long wires were called "phone companies." It was much like having one's own private telegraph system in one's home, but a telegraph that worked with a voice instead of a manually operated electromagnetic switch.

It is better to have prepaid than postpaid.
Scan with a reputable anti-malware product (I suggest trend micro premium or Sophos free). Enable Google Play Protect on your phone as well.

Way to go with those antiviruses. They must be one of the worsts available.
But the idea was right.
I would suggest F-secure or Malwarebytes for Android.

I just had to laugh at the immaturity and lack of knowledge.
F-Secure had one of the LOWEST scores in the recent android test performed by av-test (one of the leading test institutes).
I recommended trend micro because getting an original premium license is one of the cheapest (in UK atleast) while Sophos is a great choice if one is going for free. Cheetah was tested but had a lower score while Malwarebytes was not tested.
I DONT want to start the "mine is better than yours" type of thread so see for yourself:

I don't think that on Android any antivirus solutions are necessary. Check your user apps. Which one has the permission to send SMS? A gallery app doesn't need the permission to send SMS to do her job. Most users install apps and don't care about permissions.
Also try to use open source apps (preferable from F-Droid). They are more secure.
The greatest security breach is mostly the user.
