Market place is up and running
There's only 17 applications in the German Marketplace. That's a bit disappointing, considering they have been advertising their Marketplace among developers for half a year now.
I hope that it gets better soon.
How many are there in other countries?
There appears to be a good few apps on there - more than 17 as I look at it - maybe over 50 (im in the UK).
very few free apps - maybe 3?
I think I will wait until im sure what the situation will be with apps purchased and lost due to ROM flashing. Do you get to download again for free?
In the Netherlands only 4 apps, Microsoft Tag, My Phone, Facebook and 'De Telegraaf' (a Dutch newspaper). A bit disapointing...
Guys,
How do you get the application for it? I'm still using the stock ROM that came with my HD.
Cheers.
Well it not live until tomorrow so any apps are a bonus till then.
Yes, even 50 apps is disappointing. There's some 20-30000 apps for Windows Mobile out there and they could only get 50 of them into their Marketplace within 7 months?
Well... it's not even official yet, so let's wait a bit and see what happens.
Not working for me. The cab downloaded and installed but when trying to launch it searches for an update and informs me:
"We encountered an error while trying to reach the Windows Marketplace server. Would you like to try again?"
Have they switched it off again?
Mine installs but then it cant connect because it says the servers are unavailable. hmmmmm
It's still working here.
Could all of you please tell us what country you are in? That would help a lot.

But I don't think that suddenly tomorrow the Marketplace is full of apps. But lets wait and see!

My crystalball says otherwise .
The market place is still working for me (UK)
The imortant thing is quality not quantity. Obviously it's only just launching and WM isn't as sexy as it used to be, so it was always going to be a quieter launch than we'd hope for. However, I'd rather see an app store with 5,000 quality apps instead of one with 200,000 where there's 542 different "oh look an animated glass of beer" apps, a quarter of the apps are to cover the same OS deficiencies, with ultimately the same core 5,000 quality apps that are now so much harder to find.
That said, WM desperately needs both quality and quantity of games if it and the app store are going to make any real return to consumer level awareness. At least due to the OS's heritage we have an incredibly strong portfolio of productivity apps.
I had that same initial response but it worked when I tried second time around. Hopefully they are trying to load as many apps as possible.
Might be smart to submit an app.

As per my post header, I'm in the UK on Vodafone.
Not working
UK O2
Touch Pro
Working in Norway
But only 2 apps. Facebook and Microsoft tag reader
Still working in the UK on T-Mobile.
Just installed MS Tag and the install process is pretty slick and pain free and unobtrusive - thought it was going to launch the usual cab installation interface.
One thing though is that it didn't ask where I would like to install to, Memory or SD Card, hmmm.....
EDIT: Tag reader installed to memory - hope this isn't the case for all apps - there should be an option to set install location.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you install Marketplace on the HD? I am on T-Mobile UK.
Thanks,
Petrov.
Anyone else got the ChaCha yet?
Picked one up for my wife yesterday and I have to say I'm quite impressed. Solid build, nice weight, quite speedy too.
Has the Sense 3.0 lockscreen with shortcuts. No Weather\Stocks\Friendstream on the lockscreen though, just a background.
Also comes with a HTC version of Facebook chat, seems ok but can just use the inbuilt chat in the facebook app if you prefer.
Facebook integration is pretty tight, the same as with the other HTC Sense handsets. The Facebook button is quite handy and cool for uploading photos to facebook.
Will update further once we've played with it a bit more
yes
just bought one for myself as I need a keyboard (white/silver)
basically screen looks like wildfire S. very sharp
keyboard is excellent
and surprised there is forward facing camera and radio
signal quality is good and phone quality is good
even the charger is white
very nice so far
please keep updates coming
Thanks both - please keep updating us on your experiences
can't wait to play with my htc chacha..i do expecte to have it delivered by royal mail in 1 week.
ChaCha is nice!
I had same feeling. ChaCha is nice. I did not expect the keyboard is so good.
I installed Morelocale2 for Japanese use.
Japanese font is installed, and Open Wnn worked smoothly with the hardware keyboard.
It may replace my Blackberry Torch.
Further usage continues positive impressions.
Personally I wouldn't have bothered with the camber in the middle for aesthetic reasons. However for ergonomic purposes it is positive, in that it puts the screen at a better viewing angle when holding it and also wraps to your ear more nicely when making calls.
I would also have made the facebook button a more general assignable button, perhaps that will come with software
Its nice to have real "make" and "cancel" call buttons. This is always much better for people using their phones to actually make calls but seems to have been dropped on virtually all new iOS, Android and WP7 touch smartphones now.
For folk who thing this is a generic Android implementation, its not, its been tweaked alot for a landscape screen. HTC have obviously thought about how the device will be used and it has lessons learned from the excellent S620 and SNAP.
As well as sense and the display being optimised for landscape, window 1 is now the furthest left of the horzontal scroll (to go to different windows). I prefer this over the standard Android where extra windows are to the left and the right of the main windows.
Marketplace is also adapted for the size of the screen and landscape.
Note that by default, the web browser and other apps hides the status line on the top. thisis a good thing, as its a waste of space (maybe learnt from WP7 which has the perfect hidding of status symbols from permanent display !!!).
So far can continue to confirm that all radios (bluetooth, wifi and 3G) work well and calls are clear. Data also seems to be fine, marginally ahead of my Desire S in terms of keeping the signal (perhaps this is an illusion).
There IS an accelerometer, but most built-in apps seem to ignore it. e.g. the web browser does not go to portrait if you tilt the screen. It also seems that the orientation for portrait is not currently picked up by most market place apps/games. i.e. install "sky ball". You will see that to control the running ball you need to tilt left and right, but on the ChaCha, you need to tilt back and front. Clearly the game is not playable like this.
On the subject of "auto-rotate" screen, I have just found an option in the display settings called "auto rotate screen - after market downloaded applications"
I can confirm when ticking this box, most of my downloaded applications auto-rotate when I turn the phone. however this does not effect built in applications (e.g. mail, web browser, etc.)
some other things to note:
1. Chacha has 800mhz new design cpu (faster then 600mhz one in salsa and wildfire S)
2. Chacha does have an FM radio (bizzarely many previews on the internet say it hasn't)
3. The camera is 5mp with face detection and flash.
4. Note that with the latest version of Android (on the ChaCha - 2.3.3) you can move most applications you install from the marketplace to the SD card. so internal memory is not really an issue.
Lastly the keyboard is nice to use. Each key is spaced nicely and has a positive click

MANY thanks my friend - great info!
Where in London did you buy it from? I'm thinking of picking it up at the Carphone Warehouse sim-free today (8 June)
Do you find the screen is too small? The chacha resolution is better than other similar phones such as Samsung Galaxy Pro and Acer Betouch E210 (I returned the Acer cause I found it hard to read web pages etc on its resolution).
How is the battery life? Do you think it'll last a day?
Sorry for all questions!

I bought from carphonewarehouse simfree on cheapside it was £229
The battery seems the same as the Desire S. i.e. 2 days if you don't use, 1-1.5 days if you get email & browse
The screen is small (2.6"). I bought this over the samsung galaxy pro due to the 480x320 resolution. Its a sacrifice for this type of device, however the resolution is fine (same as HTC Legend, etc.)
Hi All,
My wife has noticed an annoying bug, can someone check for us to see if it s common bug or just our very own
When typing in Gtalk or SMS and a smiley is used, it can turn blue, enlarge a little and stay on the screen with no way to get it off (reboot phone)
anyone else seen this? I haven't done any of the obvious things yet such as uninstall Gtalk and re-install or do a factory reset

I haven't used gtalk. When you say smiley with SMS, just tried from SYM key. Doesn't seem to do this, but just text, i.e. : )

Ah right - Not sure about the SMS just what she told me over the phone. I've walked her through a factory reset and all seems OK at the moment. If it returns I'll uninstall Gtalk and put it back on.
What software version is everyone on? I notice the latest update is 1.18.401.1 but I'm sure my wife's is still on 1.17 I tried to initiate an update last night but was told it's up to date.

Can the ChaCha record HD Video?
Nice phone indeed! Good quality.
My call and end buttons dont work! Can anyone help please?
Just picked up mine yesterday and I'm absolutely loving the keyboard!
I came from an HTC Tattoo as I was finding it increasing frustrating to type on a touchscreen. I guess I'm a physical keyboard guy!

Good phone for facebook fan.
All you have to do is purchase on phone and sideload it, it will let you download data directly from tablet, at 1mb per second, it took about 7 mins for the whole process, 400mb download and data install. Go buy now, best 5 bucks ever spent.
Ps. I bought using my evo 3d, which also runs the game perfectly.
Edit: before you start asking, how to sideload it:
Dropbox, gmail, titanium backup, blue-tooth, etc. It also verifys market, so make sure you buy it.
excellent news, I did download the app, but got error parsing package message. Also says incompatible with my p6200, lets hope for the best for us 3g guys.

Try downloading with phone, then sideload it. It should work since it works for dell streak, even though it is android 2.3, it is a 7 inch tablet. It worked on my SGT7+ wifi, it should work on Tmobile. Just make sure you purchase it.
Downloaded but seeing quite a bit of lagg. Replacing user data files with GSII files now hoping that they will fix it
Which version do you have? Wifi or 3g? Also did you just sideload apk, and download data from tab, or copy both. Mine has no lag whatsoever with the data download directly to tab. I also have no lag with the data downloaded from my evo 3d. They both work perfectly. I also recommend using the analog steering and driving controls.
I sideloaded the .apk and let it download, had lag, so I replaced the data files with ones for the GSII from a site I found. No lagg now, just had to reset the controls as it aligned them for the S2's resolution. I don't have another Android device so I had to go the less legal route to get the APK, but I have bought the game on the iPad so I don't feel bad about it. Thumbs down to Rockstar for not having the compatibility in order

Come one bro, dont include those details, as it can get you booted.
Also what type of lag were you referring to?
FPS issues in the entire game, basically. Driving around was very laggy and basically unplayable
The game is great and works better on 7 inches than the 10 inch iPad imho... just hope rockstar gets a grip and fixes compatibility settings. As a new Android user I can't even begin to express how utterly idiotic this issue with erroneous compatibility blocks is

Oh ok, mine still seems very responsive, Ill try other data file from other phones i have. Ill post results later. Yup, thats the problem with android fragmentation, but either way any android phone beats an iphone.
No...it doesn't. Believing that is just pure bias as there is no, and probably never will be, an OS that beats the other on everything. That's why I have one of each.
Youre still very new to this community, give it some time, to the infite modifications and freedom android gives you.
Customizing something all the way to Mars is nice, but still doesn't make up for lack of apps. I've been using the iPad in ways that physically aren't possible on Android because of the lack of certain apps and types of apps
give me an example and Ill try to tell which apps are available. I have over 400 apps installed. I go thru the apple catalog and I only see nonsense apps, or social apps, how many of those do you need. But its true there are more apps, but almost all are already in android. Maybe not the market but getjar, amazon market, appbrain and more.
Ok, here's a challenge for you, and if you do manage to find an app, you will be my hero:
One of my most used apps on the iPad is a certain type of note taking app. I say a certain type rather than a specific app as there are quite literally dozens of these available on iOS now. This type of app will let me import documents - minimum requirement is PDF, but more types is better - and write on top of them. So far Android has alternative. Then you get to the most important feature, magnification mode. The way this works in all of said dozen apps is that you have a window at the bottom of the screen that shows a small portion of the screen magnified. This allows you to write big letters and have it be shrunk down. These boxes are resizable and can be set for various zoom levels. They also have auto-advance, meaning that when you get to the end of the box it automatically moves it so you just write from the beginning again. This way you can write sentence upon sentence just as you would on paper, and just as accurately, even with a normal capacitive stylus. Other features that are often in these apps include the ability to insert images, machine text, web clips, audio recordings etc. You will also need to have the ability to export PDF. There are apps on android that can annotate PDF, but not at that level. All semester I've been using the iPad and nothing but the iPad both in lectures and outside, scanning paper documents using Scanner Pro and an external camera, annotating them (this is why just text editing is useless - I need to be able to have 100% control over size, placement, angle etc of the text on a page, underline and make arrows and drawings all over the place, not just write some text down) and storing them for reading. Just had an exam with 900 pages worth of curriculum and notes, all read on the iPad, and created on the iPad to begin with in the case of notes.
That kind of app in particular is crucial, and it has to be able to do exactly what I mention here, no "almost" with missing the magnification mode etc. They even provided all the lecturers with iPads this fall, and they've been using the same types of apps connected to projectors via VGA (try finding a VGA adapter for the galaxy tab, btw ).
This is just the ultimate example though, as it's not only the type of app I've used the most, but it's an app that is 100% productivity. No widgets, games or anything like that - it's a productivity issue, and an issue for Android's usability in settings outside of people who like to watch videos and play with ADWlauncher (which also includes me in my spare time, hence why I have an Android tablet).
Other examples off the top of my head: Splashtop's secondary product, xDisplay. It doesnt exist on Android (yet), and it's an example of an app where I don't care if there are "similar products" - it's the system I'm invested in and missing apps from major services like that is an issue. I could also bring up apps that have some sort of equivalent, but far from anything that works as good. Goodreader on the iPad -> ezPDF on Android, much less powerful app. Scanner Pro -> CamScanner, same thing, and they even broke 7.0 plus compatibility in the last update. There's no direct access app for the educational system my school uses, Classfronter, which isn't really an issue due to browser access but still an issue as it's slower. No good alternative to Reeder either, not that I've found anyways.
Education in itself is an interesting field. There are so many apps that make the iPad a powerful tool for both teachers and students on iOS. How about the ability to annotate documents wirelessly using Syncpad, an app that streams the image on screen to any HTML5 browser that's connected to the internet (not just local wifi)? Used that one a lot. Replaynote, letting you do notes and commentary and have it automatically turned into a video that you can send off to help people. Dictionary apps; when you study ENglish like I do, "a dictionary" isn't enough. You need as many as possible. That's iOS, not android.
Enough productivity. Fun apps. BBE's app has brought a music enhancement technology, that so far has only been licensed to Cowon for portable use, to iOS. There's no comparison to EQs in apps like Poweramp. Flipboard, awesome RSS reader that I use instead of Reeder when I want to relax, not read feeds for work. Tried Pulse, not the same, or even close. Neither is Currents. Zinio is luckily on both OSes though there are several magazines that are only available through Newsstand. Connecting the iPad to a synthesizer via USB and playing around with it on an amateur level is always fun.
Enough examples.
I love my 7.0 Plus. I love how personal the homescreen is after tweaking it, Google Talk on it is awesome, it's the device I reach for to check email in the morning, I love using a Wiimote for games, i use it as a mouse and keyboard for my PC in bed, remote control utorrent, browse the web, as a flashlight at night (LOVE that), video support makes me weep tears of joy, read books that aren't scanned A4 documents (and hence possible to reformat for 7 inches) etc. It's a great device, which is why I have it. However it isn't perfect. There's plenty of room for both OSes in my life, for the exact reason that neither is perfect.
Repligo reader for first, lets you write on top of pdf files (shapes, text, highlight, selections,w/e), I use it in class alot, but also lean to quick office since I just use camera to copy what i dont feel like typing.
Currents instead of pulse, much better. Also with repligo everything should be capable to be done, what ios app are you refering to which can do all that.
splashtop is on android also.
I think I answered what you needed, to long to read over again, while trying to study for nueuro final.

Hello guys. For those who have used the Microsoft surface, can you share your experience? I am just curious about its speed, performance, and how user friendly it is
Sent from my GT-N7005 using xda premium
I love mine. I find the interface refreshing and unique, the people app lets me do way more with social media than I have been able to do in the past. Typing on the touch cover is still a bit of a challenge but they are saying it takes a few days to get it done properly. Speed wise, there are no issues. Mine is snappy and responsive. Battery life is amazing. I can use it all day 6am until 7pm and still only be down to around 30-40% battery remaining. There is a lack of apps but nothing that I can't wait out. I expected the ecosystem will take a bit to get going and I'm willing to wait. I sold my ipad with retina and honestly don't miss it at all.
I really love mine the more I use it. I'm typing this on the touchcover and although I make a lot of mistakes I seem to be getting better at it. That said, I do have some issues but nothing that major (yet!). Battery life seems to be much less than the ipad, people report 8-10 hours, I only get like 4-7. The apps are a disappointment, but I plan to use this device productively soo all I really need is dropbox. The device seems to slow down when editing 2 page documents in word. I tried to make a brochure on here and dragging pictures around was a nightmare. I did type a paper onhere and while it took longer then on a regular keyboard it wasn't that bad.
IE 10 for metro is complete trash. Can't even load XDA so I find myself always forced to use the desktop version. If you buy one, I suggest the model higher than 32gb as we really only get lke 14 gb because of the os taking up so much room.
The touchcover gets very dirty it seems. I'm not suire if I can clean it without ruining it. I sneeze on it before and it has a nasty stain =/.
The device itself is very prone to scratches, I tend to try to plug the thing into charge while its dark and that damn connector is such a pita that I always scratch the bezel.
I love the keyboard gestures (which I know can be used on any computer). The UI is very fast, there's a crap ton of gestures to learn. Yet, there are some gripes. Closing an app takes a crazy amount of time. You have to drag all theway from the top of the screen to the bottom, unnecessary.
Overall, I love it and I plan on keeping it. I still have my ipad and my nexus 7 but this really helps me get stuff done. The fact I can plug in almost any usb device and hve it work is amazing. You can even charge cellphones and stuff with the USB. I would recommend getting the surface IF you realize you can't run anything that's not in the store. No browser addons, no exe fils, nothing. Sometime that makes me wish I got the pro, but this device is really enough. Get past the quirkiness of metro + desktop and it's a beast.
Sorry for the typos. This was typed on the touch cover while lying down in bed.
*EDIT* The messenger app sucks realy badly too. You add someone as a friend (which can't be done in the app you have to go to a website) then you can't ever send them a message cause it says "Name unavailable" but they can send you messages. Its a one way form of communication.
*Edit2* Another clunky part. There are no jpg thumbail previews in the desktop. And when you want to open an image it has to open a program in metro

I love the surface responsiveness and the new UI. But still there is still miles to go to get this perfect.
1. After being ON for more than 3 days, clicking on Email opened up weather, can't reach the email by clicking on any of the tiles. Same with IE. I had to reboot.
2. The auto rotate stopped working suddenly. I had to reboot to get it working again.
3. The email Client is awful. Need a better email app. It can't even match 10% of other email client's functionality. (No multi select, too much delay when navigating emails in the list, no option to Archive vs Delete, Moving to folders isn't as easy,
4. There is no Cisco VPN client. If your work requires non standard Cisco VPN connectivity, stay away.
5. Enterprise Distribution of apps isn't clear yet. We shouldn't have to have enterprise apps published to Microsoft Store every time.
6. Silverlight doesn't run on RT? Kidding me?
7. Playing HD video isn't going to be easy. Not even one app which could play MKV files.
8. The copy paste of text inside surface isn't as easy as in iPad. Sometimes it takes too much time to get the needed text selected on IE.
9. Needs tweaking to run Flash on all websites (its a hack. Why?)
10, Pointing the cursor to an exact place in a text area isn't as easy as in iPad with the magnifying glass.
By the way, WHERE IS THE REPORT A PROBLEM button in RT ?

In response to some of your issues. I love metro ui based IE and find it loads XDA without issue. A good tip is to enable adblocking filters using the tips in this forum (find the topic called tips). It loads XDA fine now for me.
Closing an app by dragging top to bottom takes a lot of time? It's a half second gesture man. Be realistic. Alot of your complaints are issues that are not issues at all. It's a different UI, give it a break.

MKV does not equal HD, so try playing an MP4 or something in HD before making comments like this. So what if it doesn't play MKV format, there are plenty it does play.

I agree MKV does not equal HD. But the best compression today seems to be MKV files, and I have a ton of those. I don't want to convert all of them again into MP4 or any other format at this point. When all other OS supports playing it, why not MS - especially when they are late in the game, and know what the expectations are?

I know what you mean, I'd love to have it too (especially for the space savings) but I think we need to give MS some time to get the apps rolling. It's a new ecosystem and I've no doubt it'll get rolling soon. Would LOVE to see VLC on it.. that would rock.
I understand the os is new but I love the potential. I love this device regardless of my complaints. I do miss Google though.

I know Bluettoth also kills battery on phones and on the surface it is on by default. We need one of those battery monitoring apps, especially since the Start screen doesn't report battery details - I did find the "Windows Mobility Center" in the backend/desktop, and created a link on the start screen - it provides batter percentage among other shortcuts - pretty cool.
what I do love about the Surface is all the little things that can be tweaked on the descktop - By far more customizable than any other tablet out there.

MKV is just a container, like avi or ogg. So actual compression is x264 or as some call it mp4. There is also MP4 container which contains also x264 compressed videos, so moving files from mkv to MP4 is possible without reencoding, but just repacking.
But I agree, it is not for everyone and I'm sure mkv support will come soon through some third party app like vlc or mplayer.
This device is very new to the market and the os as well.

MKV is definitely the container of choice for HD in this day and age so any current system needs to be able to handle it if they want to sell units My whole HTPC movie library is in MKV. Having to convert to mp4 is not very practical as it requires time and steps (I use Handbrake for my Ipod touch). The latest Androids can play alomost anything thrown at them. I am sure someone will release a video player that will handle it if the surface is truly to be considered a media device. The question is will MS let it get certified in the store (Still unclear on the process and what's allowed - I would love to see a Opera or Firefox borwser too and I thought MS got sued years back for limiting options of browsers on the desktop OS). The question is how open MS will be to allow competing apps, especially if they want to sell hardware.

Back in my Linux days I had a script which unpacks MKV like it would zip file and repacks into MP4. The whole process takes 1 minute. But as you said MKV support needs to come to RT and MS is aware of the fact that sale of their Surface tablets depends on third party apps.
So I don't think they'll have an issue with VLC or Opera or anything else. More apps equals more profit.

Agree its not very good, I hope they release an RT version of Outlook.
But you CAN multiselect, kind of swipe an email to the right a bit and a tick pops up in the corner, and then do the same for other.
At the moment, Hotmail/Outlook.com is better than the RT mail app...
I've been trying to log into Huawei's community forums for a while, but no matter what I try, it results in an error page. It's the most extraordinarily frustrating experience. I wonder if anyone else has any tips to getting logged in.
My main reason for wanting to log in, apart from having a general look for tips, etc, is to find out how to inform them of a bug in their OS. Does anyone have any recommendations for how best to do that?
In fact, I often log in the community forum as my mobile phone is a Huawei device. I would like to help you report the bug.
You may post your bug description here. You can write in English or in Chinese.
If it is in English, I will translate it by myself before submit to the forum .

Actually, I have three bugs - well, I think they're bugs, except, perhaps, for the first one.
1. This one isn't really a bug, but I bet the people on the Huawei forums can help.
FYI, I use a sim card from CMLink - SIM #1 [1], which piggy back off EE in the UK, and CMCC in China, and provide useful roaming plans for use between the two countries. They only provide data plans limited by the month, and I have signed up for their 22GB plan. To track usage, I have a P10 and have been trying to set it up to automatically calibrate the data usage measure on a daily basis. I think it does this by sending an SMS containing simply 'Check' to CMCC's service number '10086', and extracts the data from the response (not 100% sure about that, but hey). There seems to be a 'calibrate' button in the settings to do this manually (under the usage graph), but when I try I get the message 'Incorrect network provider. Reselect and try again.' I'd really like to get this going.
2. Related to above, I've set the setting to show the usage under the notifications when you drag down from the top of the screen. I've configured my plan information - ie 22GB per month, and starts on the 17th of each month. However, while the 'Today' seems to increase appropriately, the 'Left' is stuck at the maximum. I imagine the 'Total' is supposed to stay at 22GB. I expect the 'Left' to go down as I use it throughout the month.
3. This one is unrelated to above. If I open a browser and go to my web mail site, there is an option on the menu to 'Add to Home screen'. As expected, when I select that option, it does add an icon to the homescreen. Since it is something I want on every page of the homescreen, I drag that icon onto the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. I do that for a couple of web pages - my email and my calendar. At this point, it all works swimmingly. However, if I reboot the phone, then those icons seem to be moved back onto the homescreen, and also are 'greyed out' and placed under the clocks (the clock widget) I have placed there. So, that's not 'expected'.
What do you think?
Max.

But as I found, it seems a community forum in Chinese. Almost all posts there are in Chinese. So, will you get any effective response even if you can log in it?
Maybe it's better to contact a local Huawei customer service center in order to get some helps. Do you think so?

Your three question are really confused and difficult to understand for me as I never used a CMLink sim card.
But I will try my best to get to know your situations and help you as more as I can.
First, let's clarify your 3rd question.
On my Huawei phone, there are at most 5 icons on the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. Every icon here for apps on my device works fine even if I reboot my device. So, is it a defect of the couple of web pages - email and calendar?
Try to drag an icon of another app or widget there. Check if it will work well, please.
> I never used a CMLink sim card
I don't think there's anything special about the CMLink, except that it works in either country pretty much the same as the other. It is the same as any other SIM card with a monthly limited data plan. So, you could consider that it is the same as a Chinese SIM card, I suppose.
> So, is it a defect of the couple of web pages - email and calendar?
Well, I guess I don't know exactly what the problem is, of course. My impression is that they hadn't considered this use-case much at all - I notice the Huawei browser doesn't have this 'add to homescreen' functionality at all.
However, you prompted me to experiment a bit more, and it doesn't happen with all web pages. Previously, I had my email and calendar on there, and they both were moved back onto the homescreen underneath other icons/widgets and greyed out (and didn't actually work to launch the web pages). However, now, the calendar page does seem to stay on there, and works when I click it. I also have tried both Chrome and Brave, and they both seem to show the same problem. I can't really see how it could be a web page problem, since nothing is being launched. I suppose it could be a web *manifest* problem, since that is where the icons usually come from...though looking in chrome devtools, I see that it has no manifest, and so the icons must be taken from the <meta> in <head>. The calendar, which does seem to be staying on the quick launch bar, also doesn't have a manifest file - so not that then.
It's pretty easy to reproduce though:
1. open your browser (chrome, probably) on https://www.fastmail.fm/
2. click on the menu and select 'Add to homescreen'
3. 'Add' on the dialog
4. 'ADD on the next dialog
5. go to the homescreen and locate the shortcut
6. drag and drop it onto the quick launch bar.
7. restart
Well, that's frustrating - I was writing those down as I did them, and when I restarted, it looked fine :/ I wonder if it makes any difference which position the icons are in on...ah, yeah, it looks like it is more reproducible if the shortcut is the left-most. Arghh. This time I lost a *native* app I had on there too - WeChat of all things - you'd imagine they'd make sure that works fine. Actually, it wasn't the WeChat app I had on there, but a shortcut to one of the contacts - you can add a wechat contact from the menu on their item in the wechat contacts list - 'Add to Desktop' it is in English. Hrm I notice that, while the web page shortcuts get moved back onto the homescreen, the WeChat contact shortcut is just gone....and I can't even add it again from WeChat - it says it is, but nothing appears :/
Gosh, it's really a bit of a mess. Perhaps it's too broken and inconsistent to even bother filing any bug. I'm tempted to apply for a job there to try and help, but in any case, I can't see too many Westerners being happy with such issues I suppose Chinese people just don't do this sort of thing.

Well, the question is where I can get help with logging in - but, if it is all in Chinese, I would modify my question to be: where can I find forums that are in English, and corresponding community support? Since there is a huge market for English speakers, I imagine they have somewhere for us to learn how to use it, and ask questions and report problems, etc?

Yes, your requirement is very reasonable.
When I posted some questions about mobile phone usage here, there would be someone would replied to my thread and tried to get more detailed info to help me. They said they were the Huawei official staff.
I will post a thread about "where for you to ask questions and report problems in English" for you soon.
On the other hand, you can access the forum either via web application (mobile web as well as computer web) or via an official app. You can also try the app. If you need it and can not find the apk, I will show you the link.

Thanks. I look forward to finding out if there is a forum for English language users somewhere. I do kind of feel like they could spend more attention to this requirement, unless, of course, I'm just not looking hard enough. I remember when I was using a ZTE phone - they were very popular due to having front-facing speakers, and so had a pretty good US based forum and it was very useful. [Side note - I wish Huawei would produce a phone with front-facing speakers].
I don't think an app will get me very far...I probably have it on my phone already - I see one called 'HiCare', for example, and there's the top line on the settings. It's all very unfamiliar and things so often don't seem to quite work as expected. I kind of wish the Huawei stores had 'help' sessions like they do (or did anyway) in Apple stores.

1. About CMLink, okay, I just posted a thread for you to Huawei community about how to report issue about Huawei phone usage for those speak English. Wait for their response, please.
2. Now I have gotten to know the feature 'Add to Home Screen'. In my Firefox Focus browser, I found it. I will have a try soon.

I tried Firefox Focus just now.
When I opened a simple web page, then selected 'Add to Home screen' from the menu, entered some words for the icon title, tap 'Add' at last.
But it was so strange that then I couldn't find this icon on the home screen at all. It must be a bug of Huawei EMUI system. The QC engineers should ignore this use case.
Btw, it's time to home for me. I will try to help you tomorrow. Would you like to support my apps available on Google Play? Thanks in advance.

Ah, I hit this too. I suspect it is simply that you need to grant the app permissions to add to homescreen in the phone's settings in the Apps->permissions...or somewhere like that.
It's a bit odd that they don't get this automatically...I never had this issue with Google Android phones.

You are right. I granted the app permission 'add to homescreen' to Firefox Focus, and then tried the feature again.
The function works well. Even after rebooting, the icon is still there on the row on the bottom of the screen that is shown on every page. So, I misunderstood that feature.

Cool. It seems like it might be working better for you than for me. I've not tried firefox yet, but chrome and brave both seem to lose any shortcuts on the quick launch bar, but not always. It is also quite curious what has happened to the shortcut from wechat...since that's a native android app :/
Perhaps you're on a more recent Android/EMUI version? What kind of phone are you using?
TBH, I'm seriously considering the P30 Pro 5G when I get back to the UK, and this is sort of a test run with a hand-me-down phone which I presume is very similar in UI/UX, so it is all 'influencing' my decision.

In fact, my phone is an old model, Mate 8 with EMUI/Android 8.0. I also have a wechat installed on my device.
Btw, would you like to leave a 5-star for my app which is available on Google Play? Thanks.

LOL, well I would be happy to, except I don't have Google Play on my phone...or Google anything, I think....except Chrome, of course. I'm a web app developer, so I prefer to use web apps than native android apps.

I posted a thread in that forum for you yesterday. https://club.huawei.com/thread-21560821-1-1.html
But till now, I have not gotten any response. So, I sent a PM to the ADMIN just now.
You may try to log in the web app or the native app for the community forum. There you might post a thread in English as your device language is English. Have a try, please. Good luck to you.
Yesterday, I managed to contact the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, through his social network account. But till now I have not gotten his reply to my PM.
I suggest you post your issues on the Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Huawei/ . Good luck to you.
