Pixel 2 can't ping my computer - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I've discovered that my Pixel 2 (running Android 8) is having trouble communicating unidirectionally with my iMac (running OS High Sierra). The computer can ping the phone fine, and when I use a photo transfer utility moving photos from the computer to the phone is 100% reliable. The converse is the problem. When I use the same photo transfer utility but want to move photos from the phone to the computer, recognition of the computer is very poor. If I repeatedly prompt the app to upload, in 1 or 2 out of 10 attempts the iMac will be "seen" by the phone resulting in a successful upload. I've been living with this, but now have another utility I want to use on the phone that requires reliable bidirectional communication.
I downloaded a ping utility for the phone and it is unable to ping the computer despite reliable communication with the home wifi network for internet functions.
I will try these connections with another computer to try and pin down where in fact the problem is rooted, Pixel 2 vs my iMac.
Any other suggestions on how to proceed in troubleshooting this problem?

can you ping the same IP from a different device on the network?

No. Tried other cellphones and another computer. When I use a photo sharing utility for moving images back and forth between computer and phone, the computer always sees the phone; the phone only sees the computer about 1 in 10 tries.

If you can't ping the computer successfully with any other device or computer, it's probably an issue with your firewall settings (if you're using one). Or possibly your router is throwing the packets away and needs to be configured to allow the incoming traffic from your local network. I could be way off base here but it seems to me if it's consistently a problem with all devices, it has to be something like that. It would make sense that the computer could ping the phone but not the other way around. The pings from the computer are outgoing and as long as the phone accepts them, it will work. The firewall or router wouldn't block the outgoing ping requests. Only the incoming.
The only thing that doesn't make sense in this regard is that you are able to connect to the computer once in a while. I would think it would fail all the time if it were a router/firewall problem. So, I don't know for sure. It can't hurt to check it out though.
What's the name of the app you're using to transfer photos?

Unable to get tethering or internet sharing working on VZW TP2

It's easier if I just post a link to the thread over at smartappsworld so I'm not stuck re-writing it all. http://smartappsworld.com/thread-t...-getting-error-692-hardware-failure-in-modem
I still have not been able to resolve these issues. Tethering worked without problems on my Q9M, but on the TP2 it gives me error 692 -There was a hardware failure in the modem - . Internet sharing isnt cooperating either. New hardware wizard in XP pops up for Generic RNDIS device. When I tried to feed it some drivers for Internet Sharing (pulled by another xda member in another thread here somewhere), XP gives me some bogus error about a missing entry in one of the .inf files that I pointed it towards. It doesnt specify which file, then it closes and there is a big yellow ( ! ) over Internet Sharing device in network devices (Driver not installed).
Thats a quick run through of the issues I'm dealing with. I really need this working as this is my only way to connect my PC to the internet. I live in boonie land where cable is nowhere in my neighborhood and dsl is too far to connect.
Yes I searched. I spent a great deal of time going through xda forums and Google... before I decided to post here. Thanks for anyones help in advance.

I have not had a problem tethering my tp2 with verizon using Win XP Pro x64, or XP home x86.
The way that works for me is:
Run the internet sharing program, Not the VZW access manager crap.
Tell it to connect
After it connects, then plug in usb from pc to phone
The pc recognizes it as another network connection
It gets its IPs and all no problems.
Open up your choice of browser and off you go.
I have never had to install drivers to do any of this, and also it doesnt use active sync when doing it this way.
hope this helps.
I pulled the internet sharing program out of the Windows folder (made a shortcut ). The problem is when I connect to the PC. The install new hardware wizard comes up for Generic RNDIS device. This is after I clicked "Connect" in IS. I have clicked cancel , then it says install failed, your new hardware may not work properly. IS disconnects and Activesync starts syncing. I tried it the first way , letting AS sync once then turning IS on, same problem.
I dont use VZ Access Manager. I was forced to uninstall that and Activesync when suddenly the PC wouldnt recognize anything while the phone was plugged in. After that, the phones internet wouldn't work either so I then had to restore the phone to factory defaults via a hard reset. After resetting, I found that 228 wouldn't program the phone. The next day I nearly took it in to VZW. tried 228 again and it worked finally. Got my phone internet back and I'm back to trying to get IS working. I didn't install VZAM, but I do have the USB driver installed.
Are there certain files that are needed on XP for this? I am still running 32bit XP Pro if that makes any difference. Service packs maybe? I'm up to the point where I'm about to go out and buy a WiFi card and try connecting it that way. Something Has to work here.
The generic RNDIS ( Remote Network Driver Interface Specification ) drivers are part of the ActiveSync install and are needed for TCP/IP between the PC and the phone.
Install ActiveSync.
Plug in the phone.
Don't cancel the New Hardware Found - let it install the drivers.
Set up a sync relationship with the PC if you like - not needed.
When you tell ICS to connect, it should drop any other connection to the PC (Hard Drive, Active Sync) and make the Windows connect sound. Then you should see the network negotiation icon in the System Tray as it sets up the internet sharing.
When I dont cancel New Hardware wizard, it doesn't find any drivers to install. This is if I let it search for drivers automatically, and after Activesync is installed. See what the problem is here? What should normally work, doesn't. Are there key files missing in the copy of Activesync that is included on the CD from VZW? What am I missing here? When I turn Internet sharing on, on the phone, it always says something like ''Check USB cable connection'' and it never changes. The hardware wizard never finds the drivers, and when I try to point it towards driver files, it says theres an entry missing and wont install.
Grr..if you read through the other thread link above, you know how long i have been trying to get it to work. Frustrating!!

I myself use WalkingHotSpots http://www.walkinghotspot.com/. It is 24.99 for a lifetime license and currently they allow you to use the license over and over when you upgrade your phone. I used it first when I had the Touch Pro and now I am using it with my TP2. It is a program that allows me to add up to 5 connections and use my TP2 as a Hotspot. Now of course it would requre you to have your TP2 connected and charging via wall outlet. But basically it will allow me to connect 3G using my WiFi. I just used it Tuesday night while at church to connect back to my business server and resolve some databases issues. My laptop was running at an excellent speed and I was online over 2 hours with no drop connections. The walking hotspot website says that it will not work with Verizon but I can personally say that it does. I do not have the Internet connection software installed on my TP2 so I am going all WiFi for my connection. I added a password and name for my Walking HotSpot so no random joe could just drive by and conect lol and I was up and running in about 10 minutes. They don't offer a free tiral but you can try it for 1 month for 6.99 and if it doesn't work you will not have wasted 25.00. Just choose to use it for a Touch Pro and you should be able to get the download. I have had it over a year now and it has come in very handy especially when I go home to visit Mom as she has no internet and walking hot spots runs my husband's laptop and mine without any issues. So whatever you ultimately do I hope you get it worked out
WMWifiRouter
I use WMWifiRouter on my phone for internet sharing. It works great. This may be an alternative for you.
http://www.wmwifirouter.com/
(the site appears to be down at the moment)
I just loaded a program called PdaNet and was really amazed at how easy it was to install. Hooked up on Verizon @ 2.4mbps - actually faster than my DSL!!!
I've only tried it a couple times but I recommend going to here http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php and download a trial version.
WMWiFiRouter
I second the vote for WMWiFiRouter. I used it on my Mogul and now on my TP2 (both with Sprint) -- no issues whatsoever -- more importantly, no tethering fees.
For me now, when i use USB or Bluetooth over ICS, my browser has to go to 3g.vzwdun.com. It didn't use to do that before. How can I keep the device from reporting that I'm tethering...

[Q] How to Connect WP7 to More than 1 PC?

hi..
I would like to check with you guys.. I have an irritation which I was wondering if it could be rectified.
Currently I connect my WP7 to 2 computers, one is my personal laptop which I use at home (to check for updates, sync MP3s and videos) and the other is my Work PC, which I frequently use it to transfer work related photographs i shot using my phone to my PC, for work purposes.
My question is, whenever I plug in my WP7 to my Home Laptop, it shows my WP7 phone name (Harold's Optimus 7) on Zune. Then when i go to work, and plug in my WP7, it shows as 'Guest' at Zune.
I am not able to transfer photos when my phone's relationship is 'Guest', and need to change the relationship.
Is there a way to make the phone accept the 2 computers rather than having me constantly changing relationship?
Any help is very much appreciated.

[Q] Kies via Wi-Fi (not Kies Air)

Sorry... maybe a stupid question... (I've searched the net and XDA before posting it, but didn't find any valid solution, just some trace of this same problem referred to other Samsung devices)
The question is:
How can I make the option "Kies via Wi-Fi - Connect to Kies via Wi-Fi" work?
I've downloaded the last version of Kies from Samsung support and installed it on my Win7 PC. I also followed the "Wi-Fi Connection Setup Guide".
I start Kies on the PC and press the "Kies via Wi-Fi button on the GNote but my PC doesn't recognize my Note 10.1 and the scanning on the GNote gives no result.
When, in the GNote, I go to Settings-More settings-Kies via Wi-Fi I just get an Attention message ("Please use caution when transmitting information on an unsecured Wi-Fi network...."). I click OK, then there's a second message window on the bottom of which for a couple of seconds there's a Scan button that, when pressed, quickly changes to a Cancel button. After a while the Scan button reappears and, when pressed, is again changed on the Cancel button.
I can't make any headway from this stupid loop
In the meantime the Kies window on the PC shows the message "Please connect a device".
I'm not interested on Kies Air (that I think is another thing).
I just would like to quickly access my GNote from the PC (and maybe transfer some small file) without having to connect it with the USB cable (no problem with the USB cable connection: the GNote is recognized and I can access it).
The Note is usually connected to a Wi-Fi router on my PC, that is connected to Internet (that's how I can access the Internet at home with the GNote).
Probably I'm missing some setting? Or is Kies not working with this option? Anyone has successfully used this kind of connection?
Any link, advice, possible solution?
Thanks
Could be a Win7 problem: maybe connection is simply rejected since You can´t register and assign an Android device to a "home-network-group" which would allow every connection.
On my laptop I have an Intel-App called "MyWiFi" thus creating a peer-to-peer connection with Android devices. With this I don´t have problems to connect, BUT: when connected via MyWiFi I have to switch off the WiFi of my router otherwise GNote does not connect to MyWiFi .............
Better use the cable .......

Thanks troed.
I see that my problem (with win7) is one of those of difficult solution (I had nightmares in the past to configure my Wi-Fi network and make it work).
In the meantime (following the tip received in an italian forum) I've found an other app, called MyPhoneExplorer, that works exactly as I intended.
It's not just for Samsung devices but for any Android device.
It consists of a client app to be installed on the tablet (small size: 564 Kb)
and a program to be installed on the PC (installer is 6.45 Mb and the portable program folder is about 17 Mb).
With this app files can be easily exchanged between the PC and the GNote through Wi-Fi.
BTW Samsung Kies installer (90.5 Mb) is huge comparing to that and, at least for me and for many other Win7 users, doesn't work on Wi-Fi in spite of what is promised and advertised.
For the second time I can't understand why a big company like Samsung can't produce a simple good and working app whilst single developers can easily do that!
(the first case is with S Note that, IMHO, is lacking some essential feature that other apps have and that prevents me form using it as my primary note taking app)
Maybe Samsung's developers don't use their company's devices?
Or maybe they have no interest in producing good working apps and prefer to put out incomplete ones to better sell their next line of products?

I tried bridging in device adapter settings in network settings in Windows 7. It is showing successful bridge formation. But the effective speed not increasing but rather it is decreasing. Please tell any suggestions. Thanks.

Possibilities for Simple, Fast, and Attractive File Transfers with Stipulations

Hello r/android. So I'm trying to determine what my options are with transferring files to and from my phone to my PC. Currently I have a Verizon Galaxy S7 and my PC is a Dell XPS 15 9550. I've got some options that are almost perfect but none that are satisfying the file transfer experience I'm seeking. Here's the situation and what I'm trying to do.
Often I use my PC and phone at work to download business metric based files. Our company only provides us with old and feeble PC's with very few user permissions. I have a USB key that I carry around and attach to the store PC. I download the files to the USB and then move the key to my Dell laptop. I'll highlight relevant text on my documents as needed and then I want to transfer to my Galaxy S7 phone in my work document folder for mobile viewing as needed. We do have public WiFi at work and I can connect both the phone and laptop to it but it is extremely slow and clunky so I choose not to if possible.
Currently I've been using one of a few options on my personal devices depending on my mood.
-Transfer documents from Dell PC to S7 via USB cable.
-Transfer using Bluetooth file transfer. Reliable but not as intuitive as dragging and dropping using an app like Airdroid.
-Don't seem to be able to utilize WiFi direct. I believe the Dell 9550 wireless card is not capable of this.
-Use Solid Explorer on the phone to connect to the PC after setting up LAN connection. This only works though if both the phone and PC are connected to the same public WiFi network at work.
I guess what I'm asking is there something like WiFi direct or an adhoc network that will let me phone and PC communicate via WiFi cards without being connected to a WiFi network. Something that is also somewhat easy to use via drag and drop methods when making the transfer of files. If not is there an app that will offer a more friendly UI for the bluetooth tranfer where I can drag and drop directly into my work documents folder on my phone?
