Unable to get tethering or internet sharing working on VZW TP2 - Touch Pro2 CDMA

It's easier if I just post a link to the thread over at smartappsworld so I'm not stuck re-writing it all. http://smartappsworld.com/thread-t...-getting-error-692-hardware-failure-in-modem
I still have not been able to resolve these issues. Tethering worked without problems on my Q9M, but on the TP2 it gives me error 692 -There was a hardware failure in the modem - . Internet sharing isnt cooperating either. New hardware wizard in XP pops up for Generic RNDIS device. When I tried to feed it some drivers for Internet Sharing (pulled by another xda member in another thread here somewhere), XP gives me some bogus error about a missing entry in one of the .inf files that I pointed it towards. It doesnt specify which file, then it closes and there is a big yellow ( ! ) over Internet Sharing device in network devices (Driver not installed).
Thats a quick run through of the issues I'm dealing with. I really need this working as this is my only way to connect my PC to the internet. I live in boonie land where cable is nowhere in my neighborhood and dsl is too far to connect.
Yes I searched. I spent a great deal of time going through xda forums and Google... before I decided to post here. Thanks for anyones help in advance.
T.C.

I have not had a problem tethering my tp2 with verizon using Win XP Pro x64, or XP home x86.
The way that works for me is:
Run the internet sharing program, Not the VZW access manager crap.
Tell it to connect
After it connects, then plug in usb from pc to phone
The pc recognizes it as another network connection
It gets its IPs and all no problems.
Open up your choice of browser and off you go.
I have never had to install drivers to do any of this, and also it doesnt use active sync when doing it this way.
hope this helps.

I pulled the internet sharing program out of the Windows folder (made a shortcut ). The problem is when I connect to the PC. The install new hardware wizard comes up for Generic RNDIS device. This is after I clicked "Connect" in IS. I have clicked cancel , then it says install failed, your new hardware may not work properly. IS disconnects and Activesync starts syncing. I tried it the first way , letting AS sync once then turning IS on, same problem.
I dont use VZ Access Manager. I was forced to uninstall that and Activesync when suddenly the PC wouldnt recognize anything while the phone was plugged in. After that, the phones internet wouldn't work either so I then had to restore the phone to factory defaults via a hard reset. After resetting, I found that 228 wouldn't program the phone. The next day I nearly took it in to VZW. tried 228 again and it worked finally. Got my phone internet back and I'm back to trying to get IS working. I didn't install VZAM, but I do have the USB driver installed.
Are there certain files that are needed on XP for this? I am still running 32bit XP Pro if that makes any difference. Service packs maybe? I'm up to the point where I'm about to go out and buy a WiFi card and try connecting it that way. Something Has to work here.

The generic RNDIS ( Remote Network Driver Interface Specification ) drivers are part of the ActiveSync install and are needed for TCP/IP between the PC and the phone.
Install ActiveSync.
Plug in the phone.
Don't cancel the New Hardware Found - let it install the drivers.
Set up a sync relationship with the PC if you like - not needed.
When you tell ICS to connect, it should drop any other connection to the PC (Hard Drive, Active Sync) and make the Windows connect sound. Then you should see the network negotiation icon in the System Tray as it sets up the internet sharing.

When I dont cancel New Hardware wizard, it doesn't find any drivers to install. This is if I let it search for drivers automatically, and after Activesync is installed. See what the problem is here? What should normally work, doesn't. Are there key files missing in the copy of Activesync that is included on the CD from VZW? What am I missing here? When I turn Internet sharing on, on the phone, it always says something like ''Check USB cable connection'' and it never changes. The hardware wizard never finds the drivers, and when I try to point it towards driver files, it says theres an entry missing and wont install.
Grr..if you read through the other thread link above, you know how long i have been trying to get it to work. Frustrating!!

I myself use WalkingHotSpots http://www.walkinghotspot.com/. It is 24.99 for a lifetime license and currently they allow you to use the license over and over when you upgrade your phone. I used it first when I had the Touch Pro and now I am using it with my TP2. It is a program that allows me to add up to 5 connections and use my TP2 as a Hotspot. Now of course it would requre you to have your TP2 connected and charging via wall outlet. But basically it will allow me to connect 3G using my WiFi. I just used it Tuesday night while at church to connect back to my business server and resolve some databases issues. My laptop was running at an excellent speed and I was online over 2 hours with no drop connections. The walking hotspot website says that it will not work with Verizon but I can personally say that it does. I do not have the Internet connection software installed on my TP2 so I am going all WiFi for my connection. I added a password and name for my Walking HotSpot so no random joe could just drive by and conect lol and I was up and running in about 10 minutes. They don't offer a free tiral but you can try it for 1 month for 6.99 and if it doesn't work you will not have wasted 25.00. Just choose to use it for a Touch Pro and you should be able to get the download. I have had it over a year now and it has come in very handy especially when I go home to visit Mom as she has no internet and walking hot spots runs my husband's laptop and mine without any issues. So whatever you ultimately do I hope you get it worked out

WMWifiRouter
I use WMWifiRouter on my phone for internet sharing. It works great. This may be an alternative for you.
http://www.wmwifirouter.com/
(the site appears to be down at the moment)

I just loaded a program called PdaNet and was really amazed at how easy it was to install. Hooked up on Verizon @ 2.4mbps - actually faster than my DSL!!!
I've only tried it a couple times but I recommend going to here http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php and download a trial version.

WMWiFiRouter
I second the vote for WMWiFiRouter. I used it on my Mogul and now on my TP2 (both with Sprint) -- no issues whatsoever -- more importantly, no tethering fees.

For me now, when i use USB or Bluetooth over ICS, my browser has to go to 3g.vzwdun.com. It didn't use to do that before. How can I keep the device from reporting that I'm tethering...

SYNC no longer recognized

Ok I am no newbie to this, but I am sick of the frustration that comes with this problem. I've had me TC for a couple months now and it will not be recognized with my PC. I've had this problem before.... deleting the partnership, changing the USB ports and settings, downloading the newest sync software, and shutting down the fire wall, yet nothing works. The only thing I can do is use Bluetooth, which is to slow to transfer files. I need some help here, because even backing up everything on the phone and doing a hard reset takes too long to restore what I have on it now.
try to unmark ->settings->connections->usbtoPC-> enhanced network functions.
sorry, i have a german one, so look for that function.
I have the same problem with my o2 xda orbit 2.
I found that if I turned off the bluetooth and wifi it connected ok but even that seems to have stopped working now.
I got it back
I shut off the windows firewall with Vista and it works every time now. This is odd since I always had it on before and never made a change to the settings. In fact once I had given permission for windows mobile center to run with the security I never had this problem before. All I can say is it is a serious pain to disable it every time I want to access my files on the phone.
the joys of activesync......
I'm running XP-Pro on both my home and desktop PC's
with my orbit 2 I have no problem connecting at home, but failed miserably at work (other than the first time after I'd installed activesync).
I'd concluded that it was my firewall settings (which are outside of my authority to alter) we're the cause of the problem and gave up.
What usually happens is an activesync connection is established (I alway click on cancel in the first box - because I don't want to sync files etc, just to be able to explore and install software), and then when I click on explore (after it says connected) it just hangs for a minutes or so, before disconnecting.
However, I hooked up my Orbit2 to my laptop in my hotel last night (to charge) and I noticed that I could explore. OK I thought, it was the firewall.
But then today I tried exactly the same thing, and we're back to the non communicating version.
Any ideas,
Any ways to force activesync into submission - even if just at the explore level?
Thanks
simple joys
Well Vista doesn't use active sync, but I'll try to give you what I have learned. First it always helps to have the latest version of the software. I'd delete active sync from the computer and end the partnership on the phone. The phone then says to hook it up with a computer to establish a connection. Before you do restart both. Download newest version from windowsmobile, install and restart again. Disable firewall and any antivirus ( it makes a difference ) and try to establish the new partnership. If that doesn't work sometimes the comm ports are wrong and you have to find out which your phone uses. Once I had a Moto Q9h unbranded that would not sync with USB no matter what I did from the start, but it would work with a bluetooth sync. That was the worst speed ever. Anyway Good Luck.
Thanks,
yes I am using the latest (for XP) active sync.
I also uninstalled it / re-installed it
I also deleted the profile
All to no avail
Virus / Firewall settings are locked on this laptop.
Same problem
I'm using vista, uninstalled and reinstalled the last version of ActiveSync, deleted the partnership and the phone does not not connect to the pc. I dunno what to do .
p.s. : firewall is off.
no sync with xp and vista
hi
I see that Im not alone...Isync my polaris with my personal pc (vista 32) and with my professional pc (xp pro).
my rom is Aserg (many rom tested before like Bepe....same PB)
its impossible to sync both pc. I have to erase partner ship each time I want to sync.
Im not sure, but I think that windows 61 is responsible. Is that possible ? thank you for helping me !

You said you updated active sync, but Vista doesn't use that program. You need to use Windows mobile device center. If you go to windowsmobile.com there is an update you can download that you install with the phone connected. That might work.

You have to delete every time, because once it is synced with one computer it establishes a relationship with that pc or laptop. The two operating systems use two different programs, but really the computers should have the partnership saved. I'm not sure if the phone can have two as well though.

Activesync won't recognize Raphael,...

hello everyone,
I cannot get Activesync to recognize my htc touch pro no matter what i do,... i've uninstalled and reinstalled shut everything off then on, followed all of MS's advice, and nothing works,...
Any suggestions,...? No problems connecting my tytn II and my hermes,...
thanks,
ek
Are you running any firewall software? If so, this is relevant to you.
start>>settings>>connections>>usbtopc>> un check the "enable advanced network functionality"
sorry attnoob, was trying for your quick fix, but it didn't work,... thanks anyway,... now will go to the firewall issues noted above, but i already opened the ports as per ms's recommendations in help,...
will try other suggestions and get back to you,...
ok, so allenh, read all the info at the link you sent me, and actually did all these things yesterday, but it didn't work,... also, something strange happens when i hook the device to the PC in that, the device immediately goes to the 'internet sharing' program you use when tethering, it establishes a connection with the internet, and there is a comments saying 'check usb cable connection' and this never happened with the tytn II,...
your help is appreciated,...

Check the USB cable
It seems the USB cable the Tilt uses and the one the Raphael/Fuze use are different, If i use the cable that i usued with my tilt the computer would not recognize the Fuze it will charge it though, only if i use the usb cable that came with the Fuze it works fine.
Are you using the stock ROM or a cooked ROM. Some of the new cooked ROMS are having this problem.
Also, are you using Vista or XP. The problems seem to be with XP.
my fuze seems to also be having this issue... i can hear my laptop do the little noise saying something is attached but my phone never pops up with the screen anymore asking what i would like to do. sometimes i get lucky and it will randomly connect to active sync but would not give me any warning whether it was going to work or not.
btw, it didnt start doing this until i flashed NATF's v2.1 and also loaded a custom theme and toolbars and such.... it worked after i loaded NATF's rom, just randomly stopped at some point after that.
if you are putting on a new rom then put the phone in bootloader mode it worked for me

My Fuze is doing this too, excep every single time. I can't get Activesync to work through USB. And I'm running the stock ROM. Internet Sharing automatically connects.
Okay, I set Internet Sharing to Bluetooth PAN (instead of USB), which kept it from automatically starting when I plugged in the USB. This let ActiveSync and the 'choose a connection type' startup on my Fuze and everything has been fine.
Try your PC Network settings
Hi,
I have the same problem recently. My AS does not want to recognize my Raphael. What I did was go to the network setting of the PC (Network Connections) and disable the 1394 adapter. Then my AS now can recognize my Raphael. The next unsolved thing is how to make the connection stable enough to make happen the syncing.
Drax
Hi, I had similar problem. Once upon a time the connection between my Touch Pro (WM6.5.3) and PC stopped working. Activesync did nothing and after a minute gave error message with troubleshoot guide. So I opened control panel ---> device manager (with mobile connected via USB), where I found "Windows mobile based device" between network adapters. I opened it and under it's advanced settings I found "network address" which was set to "unavailable". So I changed it to 192.168.2.2 and now it works again ;-)
Hope it helps someone ;-)

Exactly how to use ICS (WM6.1) with a laptop?

So I thought this would be easy. I _finally_ got my XV6800 flashed and up and running with a DCD ROM.
My main reason was to use ICS with any laptop in an easy fashion the way it was intended to be used.
So I'm all excited, get my USB cable, plug it into the laptop and I'm not sure what is supposed to exactly happen.
On my phone I have:
PC Connection: USB
Network Connection: Data Connection (my only and active data network connection)
When I connect it and click on 'Connect' it says 'Check USB cable connection'. I should also mentioned though that before I do any of this, when I connect the phone to the laptop it doesn't quite recognize the device yet (this is an XP laptop) and launches the new hardware wizard for Generic RNDIS.
So do I first have to pair the two somehow? I read somewhere that essentially the laptop will use the phone as another network card of sorts. If that is the case, do I need to set all that up on the laptop first?
I tried Googling ICS how-to or ICS guide or ICS (insert-keyword-here) and amazingly, I can't find a simple guide on how this works.
Any help would be appreciated! (I searched threads here and can't find anything either)
Well, here is what I figured out so far. You HAVE to have MS Activesync on the target laptop it seems from all I could find, so the downside to this approach vs. some other methods is you can't connect it to any laptop at random unless they have AS installed.
The wierd part is it still doesn't fully work.
I noticed that when I connect now, it works and says 'Connected' and also observe the following:
1) Under my Network Apapters of device manager, my adapter changes from Windows Mobile-based Device to Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device
2) I see the little PC traffic/connection icon in the system tray just like I would expect it
But when I refresh my browser, there is still no activity :/
The Status tab says:
Status: Acquiring network address...and then changed to...Connected
Speed: 10.0 Mbps
Packets sent goes up about 1 every 2-4 seconds but received only stays very low usually, about 5-9...
Note: I made sure a data connection was first established on my phone before I turned on ICS

[Q] ADB and New Hardware

Ok I did everything correctly from this website on how to install ADB on windows XP. Since i'm new, I can't post it up yet.
I got all the way up to the last bit and still my comp "new hardware wizard" keeps saying "Cannot find hardware". WTF....i have the google usb drivers, but it still won't work. Also i downloaded the java program for it.
PLEASE HELP
addictivetips.com / mobile / what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
^^^^This is the site that i used.
What device do you have?
Some require external drivers (e.g. Motorola USB Drivers).
I have the HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon
Kappa,
Check this out: androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/302621-ready-root-your-thunderbolt-but-adb-confusing-you.html
As roee88 alluded to, a lot of devices have their own ADB drivers. You wanna go with them first. HTH / Good luck
Thanks RD, that really helped. the problem now is that whenever I install the HTC Sync software for the usb drivers, it totally messes with my internet. My comp says it's connected to the internet with the enthernet connection, but i won't be able to surf the net or the internet browser tells me I'm not connected. My intel/pro set wireless says there is no wireless hardware. When i do a system restore, everything is back to normal and i have internet access. What's going on????
Kappa,
Definitely not "normal" behavior. I would just start from scratch. Before going at it again, check HTC's support site that you are using the most current drivers & sync software for your OS & phone, making sure you pay attention to whether you need 32 or 64-bit version. Reinstall. Reboot. Try syncing the phone again, and afterward see if the problem repeats itself.
In the unfortunate case that it does, the only lead I have for you is that I seem to remember (I haven't played around with HTC Sync in a long while) that the prog installs its own network adapter, so maybe when it is active (like after doing a sync) it disables your other network interfaces, e.g., Wireless. I think you said you're using XP, so in Control Panel-->Network Connections check that the Wireless is active.
I also seem to recall something about an Internet pass-through toggle in the software; this could be relevant as well, but sorry-- it's been a while. Good luck.

So, I've been here before.

My question is, what would you do in my situation?
My Xoom connected to my computer (HP Pavilion dv6000) (Windows Vista) once before in past times. It will not connect anymore, I have done everything possible that people have said to do. Still in the same situation.
I connected it to my mothers Toshiba Satellite U505-S2950 (Windows 7)after installing Moto software, and its working perfectly.
Should I re-install Windows/Re-set to default? I've tried everything, from installing drivers, to changing permissions, to installing adb, blah blah blah.
I just recently found DropBox which I am using now, until I can figure out exactly what to do with my HP.
Anyone? TBH: I don't want to use my moms laptop every time I want to transfer a movie to my Xoom, rather it be mine.
Appreciation is high.
-Nic
So I guess you are using your original Xoom USB cable, and have tried different USB ports (like the ones on the back if you have a tower), you tried with debugging on and off, you've tried with the USB plugged into the Xoom 1st and then into the computer as well as the other way around...do you have Windows Media Player (9?) installed on your pc? It seems it needs it to connect....
Its not a solution to USB woes as I reckon I am in the same position with XP Windows machines, but an alternative.
Why not run a FTP Server on either your Laptop or your Xoom....
I doubt its as fast as USB transfer but may be quicker than Dropbox (definitely quicker for me in the UK with cruddy upload speeds !!!)
I use FTPServ on the PC and SwiFTP on the Xoom as the FTP Server - I just switch each one on when needed depending on which copy method I feel like using
I use Total Commander for the FTP Client on the Xoom.

Interesting idea...
This I suppose could be seen to be quite drastic, but it will fix 99.9% of all USB related issues across windows OS's
*** Read first before actioning ***
>Right click My computer and manage, you are using Vista? So will probably need to run as admin.
>Go to device management and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
>Ok delete the lot
>Yup delete the lot
What this means is that it should now prompt you to reinstall the drivers for any USB device plugged in to the PC, yes you may find that you have to unplug and replug in your keyboard and mouse to re-install the drivers for those devices. But it should also re-install the Motorola Xoom drivers also.
At the end of the days its quicker to try this than re-install Windows
Unfortunately not every USB Root Hub or Host controller displays what it actually is, some do but that's a case of right clicking each one to see what it is. If for example it states that its a mouse then perhaps don't delete that one but hopefully you get my drift.
