Do I need root to create a theme for Substratum? - prjkt.io

I've been using Substratum for quite a while now, but recently switched to using Andromeda instead of rooting my phone. I am curious to know if I need root if I wanted to create a new theme for some of the apps I have or if I can still just use Andromeda when I am trying to create it. Thanks.

You don't need root no, just download the studio and the template and you're good to go.

I rooted the phone and flashed the ROM. I am looking to get Android market and figure out how to sync my contacts with GMAIL. I am very new to this and actually didn't really want to do it, but why not. I need all kinds of help.
Any help is appreciated.

The best advice I can give you, being pretty new myself, is to search the forum every question has been asked 12 times atleast. And the people here are extremely helpful. From my knowledge I would search for a Google addons zip and flash it. But I could be wrong.

Make sure you keep the gapps file for future use. ROMS built from source cannot have googles proprietary files included.

Rooting the Mesmerize

I finally got sick of the bloat and rooted it. I used The tutorial from here:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/26/universal-android-rooting-procedure-rage-method/
In the tutorial download file I substituted with the new version of the superuser.apk and su from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
All you need to do is substitute the superuser.apk(system/app) and su(system/bin) the rest of the folders/files are not needed. This method worked 1st try, you just have to be very cautious and type everything exact.
Thought I would share for those that like to do things manually Now on to de-bloating, anyone know of a good list of apps that are safe to remove? So far i just got rid of cityid and infoalarm.apk(daily briefing).

You can tether without rooting with the stock wireless modem app unless you just don't want to use that one. Saving apps to the sdcard won't come until Q1 2011 with the 2.2 update.

[Q] [Q:] How to Manually Deodex D2G?

From what I understand you can follow this guide also...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765270
I just want to know the "LONG way' of performing the task.
Thank you for letting me post.
Also, knowing that DX & D2 are almost Identical, I'm going to attempt to delete almost all bloatware and report back. (I need to deodex first, I think?)

Yes it did, "xUltimate v2.2" will deodex all files needed. With that being said, if you snoop around at the source of "xUltimate v2.2" It will inform you on how to do it manually.
Thanks for the info, I've read about 30 different threads about xultimate. I'm nervous to give it a go. Have never done this before. Which is easier? Using the xultimate method or the manual? I couldn't find how to do it manually either.
You're welcome bro, I hope that we can all learn more about our phone. xUltimate was easier, manually would involve a lot of time. But if you are like me, then learning isn't an issue. Plus we have the D2G SBF, to restore from.

thank goodness for the sbf....im sure Ill need it again...already used it once!
think Ill try the xultimate route first, seems pretty straight forward in that thread
AngDroid provided stock rom that is deodexed, why don't you simply use that one instead going thru all the hassle. I use it, has root and busybox integrated, it works fine.
Thanks,
is that the one you dl from the team defuse rom manager? is it 2.4.330 or .29? I tried to get that defuse rom manger but the lite link wouldnt work, guess Ill pay pay for the full version but am kinda itchin to take the next step and do it myself

You can dl it for free via Team DeFuse Rom Manager. I also used their roms for a while on my old D2G. When I received my new D2G I wanted to do everything manually. Now I'm in the process "Cyanogenmod" and starting is half the battle.
Thanks for the input. Got that up and running. Awesome about cm. That was my goto on the droid. I thought that couldn't be ported due to the encrypted kernal. That was/is my ultimate goal to figure out how to do. But I'll start with deodexing
Yes that is a problem, but anything is possible. That's why my first step is understanding how to compile a kernel then how to apply it, it's a long process. In return it will all be worth it.

now I need to find out how to change the font colors on the notification bar so I can change that out to a black one....off to google and the interwebs!
So is using adb and modifying services. Jar the only way to change the color of the clock on the stock rom? or is there an easier way.? I am kinda liking some of these blur apps so I didn't really want to flash fission just to be able to change the status bar and notification drop down.... or can I push the blur apps to fission if I load that?

That's the only way afaik to change the clock color.
Blur won't work on fission because of the hooks and services that have to be present for it to work you'd be basically remaking the ROM just to have the blur you like.

TMobile Theme Chooser

UPDATE: Doesn't work, but maybe it could be made to work? See last posts.
I just have a question about installing the theme chooser on any rooted and deoxed ROM. Is it possible? I'm running one of jboxers roms. I saw one thread here at xda about it but the guy was asking about sense roms.
It can be installed on any ROM based off of the CM7 source. (I think it can at least, I've never tried it on MIUI but you don't need it there)

What needs to be changed in the rom? Is it edits to the framework? If I can do it, it would be an interesting project to try.

Try to push it to a stock room with adb. It will fail, and somewhere it will say why. Fix the why.
I haven't got the slightest idea as to what exactly the theme chooser relies on.

Search Google for "T-Mobile Theme Chooser." It was code written by T-Mobile for their phones. That is what CM7 and others use to implement this feature. It requires the framework to be decompiled and recompiled with support code for the theme chooser. It is just not installing a program. it is very technical and not easy to do.

So I gave it a shot and this is what I end up with. I'll google around to see what this means, if it means anything more than its face value might suggest.

Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE]
Edit: Looked around some more and found this thread on the error:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640592&page=54
To quote Brut.all there "I think "INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE" is straightforward: Android refuses to install apk with UID if it has different certs than already installed app."
and Daneshm90 "Yup so u got 2 options,
1. Find all the apks that have the same uid and resign them with the same keys
2. Remove the uid from the manifest and hope it works"
I am not sure exactly where to go from here. Is there a tool that would let me open up the APK and see the UID?

well it just so happens that i have the p500 factory 2.3.3 flashed on my p509 now right now, since they dont have an official tmo version yet. but it is european based, so what im wondering is, would that already be incorporated into the "ROM" inces its european, or maybe not conidering the p500 isnt a t-mobile phone, and both prerequisites arent met, 1. european firmware, and 2. t-mobile branded
what do yall think??

Safestrap and ROMS status

So with PingPong root proving that root can be obtained for the Verizon Samsung S6, the next step would be to obtain some form of recovery that would allow us to flash Touchwiz based ROMS with certain features removed, hidden, or added. I'd like to start off by stating the two absolutes that I'd like to see:

Forgive my ignorance, but when flashing with flashfire, are we replacing the stock ROM without using recovery? Or are we adding a new rom "next to" the original, and booting into it?
If you know of a "Flashfire for dummies" I would love a link! I really have no clue. I've never dealt with flashing anything but the old fashion way (cwm/twrp). Which, to add to my confusion, TWRP is now available for the S6

it depends on what variant you have.. if you have a locked BL twrp will not work for you.
To be honest there is no flashfire for dummies as it's pretty dummied down already lol. you have your typical wipe options and flashing options and backup/restore options.
to my knowledge it flashes to your regular partition you always use..
so set it to wipe and then install ROM.zip as usual.
flashing regular mods or zips you simple select flash zip, choose it and flash.
its sort of like its own recovery.. you'll see a loading screen followed by the screen that shows you what its flashing (update-script) so everything is selected from the app (not while in a recovery)

I think what he was trying to say was......before posting questions about flashfire, please check out this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/flashfire-t3075433
Once you have at least read through the OP of this post and searched that forum for answers to your questions, then ask the community.
The best way I could describe flashfire is like having an easier to use version of Safestrap that is run on demand rather than as an option on each boot. If you want to flash something, you load it up in Flashfire first and tell flashfire each step you want it to follow and then click flash and it goes to work. I'd liken it to boot from CD for Windows (i.e. windows bypasses the boot up commands and instead loads files from the CD to boot up with....you'll notice with flashfire that after your boot, it loads a bunch of files very quickly and then enters a recovery mode to flash the files. But I'm just blabbering, give it a chance and you'll see it is easy making bacon taste good!
So is the real reason there is a lack of dev support and ROM cooking for this device is the locked bootloader ? It's likely we'll see a very small amount of (admittedly very good) ROMS here ?
