guys i know this screen is loved by many but i still like to compare stuff
i mean even on 4k mod I compared it to the Z3 and it the Z3 has heigher brightness and its actually whiter on white spots and sharper
I compared instagram photos and our beloved XZP is not as sharp or as white in white areas or as bright as the OLD Z3
is there any thing wrong? or was the Z3 a one of a kind phone ?
dont get me wrong the screen is splinded but i just love to feel owning the BEST or at least the LATEST good features on a flagship but it kills me to see some older phones seem to have better like the old Z3
AND ITS A 4K SCREEN how is it less sharp than the Z3?? the screen is WONDERFUL but not as I expected or is there a different point of view here?
did you actually view 4k content ? go download some 4k video sample and then watch it on your phone in native sony gallery app then you'll spot the difference

yah i mean sure the videos and stuff look crisp but when it comes to sharpness ive been sharper displays, this might look more realistic as it is IPS display but the white balance i saw on the Z3 is a lil whiter on the whites
and a lil sharper to be honest and its driving me crazy
im not only talking about viewing 4k content but in a native 4k screen just doing whatever... like instagram and all that
the gui itself run at 1080p , since there is no need for more as its not needed in interface itself and consume less battery that way. if you want to switch your phone to natively run 4k then depending on are you rooted or not use adb command to switch the resolution and change the dpi to value that suits your needs or if you rooted use 4k switcher script/zip

All that does is change the rendered DPI (which makes text smaller, and forms scale smaller). It does not actually activate the extra pixels. To do that all the time would require a custom kernel. It's possible that the Z3 has a better white balance, etc when comparing 1080p to 1080p. I know the Z5 Premium actually looked underwhelming when in 1080p. If you want a true comparison, pull up a YouTube video that is 4k, and compare that to the Z3. The YouTube video will be in true 4k, as apps have the ability to request 4k be turned on through the kernel. The kernel gives it out on a per app basis though, so the only way to be able to see true 4k content that I know of is to use Amazon prime video, YouTube, or the Sony media apps that came with the phone.
Regarding Z3 white balance, it's commonly known that Sony intentionally calibrated the white balance very cool (over 9000K) to increase perceived (and real?) screen brightness. While the screen does indeed look punchy and bright, it's white balance is far from the 6500K reference standard. The XZ Premium is actually much more accurate in both color reproduction and white balance but for some people, that reference standard appears dull and washed out if they are used to viewing pumped up displays.
I have a Z3 and it has a nice display but is far from accurate. My XZ Premium can look a bit dull next to it even in Standard (Triluminous) color mode. But it soundly beats the Z3 in every visual aspect under close scrutiny. And it's vibrancy is gorgeous when viewing 4K HDR content. The Z3 doesn't even come close then.

yah i kind of noticed that not only in smart phones but in all screens (TV monitors etc...) and i seem to find IPS displays with the most accurate color but some other displays seem sharper especially when it comes to text and small details lilke that
in videos and photos I agree IPS displays can make you feel like youre looking out of a window but on normal use , when it comes to texts and sharpness on small objects on the screen, other screens than IPS look a lil sharper and more punchy which is weird

The OnePlus 2 has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
1080P is still great. People should stop complaining.
FullHD display is still relevant. Helps in battery consumption

The colors look washed out, even in comparison to OPO. What is experience of other users?
The colors are natural and give a "true to life" look. Go ahead and bump up the saturation and contrast for that "amoled look" if that's your thing. We are on android after all.
1080p is more than enough for a phone or tablet.
The display color is way better than nexus 5 and OPO screen. Bright is also good when high, and gets very low too. The resolution is great, not missing QHD at all.
I will agree with saurabhp75 that the colours are not as vivid and looked washed out compared to the OPO. The only settings are brightness and colour balance which goes from cool to warm. I do agree that it is brighter than the OPO though.
For those complaining that the colors seem "washed" out, that is true to life colors. If you want to have that AMOLED like saturation, we are on android after all, flash AK kernel or Boeffla and from there google the gamma settings for the kind of color reproduction you are interested in
Color production is subjective in this case, it is unjust to call the onplus 2's display as sub par lel
1920x1080 resolution on 5" bit small but for my eyes enough. HD Videos, HD Pictures looking sharp and not pixelised.

Flash AK Kernel, Change colors to some AMOLED-like mode. Then colors would be over contrasted and not natural...if that's what You want, You can do this. OP2 Screen is amazing. Whites are white and blacks are almost 100% black. I'm really happy with it

Install a custom Kernel and increase the saturation to 40-45. It looks much better now, and much more pleasing than the OPO's display. That one always looked weird and cheap to me.
Resolution n sharpness is good. FullHD is still pretty much enough for our eyes.
Agree that color is slightly dull (i always compare color with iphone - the most natural screen you can have) but its easy to tweak using kernel that have KCAL setting enabled. So no issue there
Mate! Really? You think the screen is bad? It is just not saturated. I have a Sony Xperia Z3, Galaxy Note 3, and an LG G4, and Honestly, I cannot tell the difference. Let me get a little technical in the hope of helping you understand it better.
If you feel a magazine page and the photos on a magazine are crisp enough, they are printed at 300dpi. Fine art printers go to 720dpi. And no one really goes beyond that. And from a foot away, even a person with perfect eye sight cannot see more than about 450ppi. The One plus two pushes more than 400ppi, and that I believe should be plenty, unless you want to plaster your eyeballs to the phone screen (which would result in you losing your eyes, unless the screen is turned off ).
Highlights...
A new 3K Higher Resolution 2960 x 1440 display that fills almost the entire front face of the phone from edge-to-edge, resulting in a larger 5.8 inch display with a taller height to width Aspect Ratio of 18.5 : 9 = 2.05.
A new and accurate full 100% DCI-P3 Color Gamut that is also used for 4K TVs. Plus it is the first Smartphone to be certified by the UHD Alliance for Mobile HDR Premium, which allows it to play all of the latest content produced for 4K UHD Premium TVs.
The Native Color Gamut of the Galaxy S8 is even larger, the result of its new high saturation “Deep Red” OLED, resulting in a very impressive 113% of DCI-P3 and 142% of sRGB / Rec.709 Gamuts that also produces better on-screen Colors in High Ambient Light.
The Galaxy S8 has 5% to 19% Higher Screen Brightness, plus a record Peak Brightness of over 1,000 nits.
New front and back Dual Ambient Light Sensors for significantly improved Automatic Brightness settings.
Since 2013 the Display Power Efficiency of the Galaxy series of Smartphones has improved by a very impressive 56%. This year the new OLED materials on the Galaxy S8 have improved optical and power efficiency with its larger Native Color Gamut than on the Galaxy S7 (142% compared to 131% for sRGB / Rec.709).

Thanks for this, I didn't think they would have this review up already so I didn't check. That sounds fantastic, pretty much the most important aspect of a phone. It's what we look at and interactive with all the time. It will complement my HDR TV nicely, I can watch HDR Netflix etc on the go now. Great news. Now I'm waiting for the Dxomark camera review.
Wonder how this compares to the note 7? I still have mine. Preordered the black s8 plus also

Their QLEDs suck compared to OLED unless viewing HDR content mastered at 4000 nits, and even then, you are trading contrast for brightness and still dealing with poor viewing angles.
They tried OLED TVs and failed. They either couldn't make good yields or product life span with their RGB pixels and cut OLED TVs. LG uses patented white OLED pixels with RGB color filters which results in uniform pixel/panel wear and they have managed great yields on the panels. They are the sole manufacturer of all OLED TV panels today.
I'm considering the XZ, however there are very conflicting reviews of the camera. Some show really nasty photos, some show good photos. I'm assuming some of this has to do with SW versions and I know the XZ recently updated to 7.0.
I can't tell anything from a tethered store display unit.
Anyone have any comments regarding photo quality?
Manual mode is fine for me to shoot in. I almost always use manual mode on my cell phones and also my digital cameras.
Thanks in advance.
I find it pretty good, the manual shutter speed goes right down to 1/4000, manual focus ISO etc.
In MM I did realise the camera quality was worse than in 7.0 - so they did improve it.
Photos I have taken have great colours, and can usually be edited quite well in lightroom.
Big downside is the no RAW support (Yet, hopefully they release it)

Colors have pretty much always been good in reports. The main thing that some of the "bad" reviews have mentioned is the artifacts especially in lower light. The better reviews and pictures that I've seen online don't really show a huge artifact problem and some of the youtube videos show what appears to be very good lowlight performance using manual mode.
I knew about the lack of raw support and I've used LR for a long time.

Sony has always been a bit dodgy with low light, but I have found the XZ really improves on that (Compared to ther Z3, and Z5) Manual mode really helps with some of that though (same as a DSLR though)
Another thing to note, the device unlocks super quickly, and same with the camera, good for those un prepared shots

I suppose that there isn't really any infor on their nrw 19mp camera used in thr XZs, nor have I found any pricing on it. At any rate it seems only a small upgrade from the XZ, with mostly the new camera and another 1 of ram
Pictures are generally very noisy and blurry when its not in extremely good light (inside with the sun shining through the windows with the lights on as well) Video however is very very good. I dont use manual mode since I don't know what to do, but as a point and shoot I can think of several phones that do better and probably cost less. If you want to buy it for the camera, just dont.

Thats strange, I hope I dont have a faulty hardware , however did you try to take indoor pictures and zoom in, you'll really notice the noise atleast, and if I'm not still as a building then it will also blur.
Sometimes the SW can overboard with the sharpening, I wish there was an option to disable it. Most phones probably have this issue too though.
I dont know if this can be counted as an issue but the lens on XZ has kind of a fish eye effect, So If you are taking a picture of an object and put it i the corners, it stretches and looks a bit... uh, unnatural? Because of this I try to make sure to center people as much as I can.
Some also say that taking pics in 8 mp mode introduces some artifacts because of the conversion algorithm (23mp to 8mp downsizing). So I use 23MP to avoid any unwanted processing.
I find the colors of the photos, taken with the XZ, to be very dull and way too cold to my liking, and XZ's Camera UI and Camera API have very limited manual controls set, unlike the rest of the flagships out there. I made a few photos with my old Xperia Pro and my new Xperia XZ for comparison, you can check them here - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0u28226fxm9z27d/AADrU08TmvfIUtSbprgharT-a?dl=0 . I was very unhappy with the XZ's camera so I sold it one week after I bought it.
EDIT: you check this thread for more information about the limitations, related to the manual controls of XZ's camera - https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/help/enable-manual-controls-camera-t3580654
My experience, XZ pictures have a lot of noise (you can see that when you zoom in) when the light is not enough (and the phone is the one that decides what it means by enough )
I am coming from Galaxy s6 edge + to XZ Dual, and the S6 is the winner in my comparison.
If you want it for the camera, I wouldnt recommend you to go for the XZ.

This review has sample photos in full res from XZS if you wanna know about picture quality. I own the XZ and i do see a difference in quality to the better in XZs compared to XZ..
https://www.lowyat.net/2017/128842/sony-xperia-xzs-review-one-trick-pony/
After I started using 4:3 full resolution instead od cropped 16:9 and disabled object tracking I very rarely see edge bluring and the photos in general are a lot better.
The "noise" people talk about in most cases is not really noise, it's a result of the image processing algorithm being too aggressive trying to eliminate noise even when there isn't any. First it sharpens the hell out of the photo to bring out as much detail as possible and then it tries to remove the resulting noise by applying heavy noise reduction. It's basically shooting itself in the foot. But, it really isn't as dramatic as some would say, you can't really see that effect until you zoom in really close. If Sony could find a middle ground, balance it out a bit, it would be perfect.
Sony's image processing has always been an issue for some unexplainable reason, they mastered sensors and image processing in photography a long time ago, but when it comes to phones it fails in software department, the sensor are the best on the market still.
It really is mind boggling, and they are aware of that, it's basically a software issue, it just needs some adjusting, why apply a noise reduction filter when there isn't any noise? HDR usually sucks as well. Then again, their DIS is top notch, the autofocus since the XZ is superb, the colors to me look great all around, low light photos are very good, specially in manual mode with adjustable shutter speed...there are great things about Sony's cameras, but usually things average user doesn't really see or cares about.
To be fair, the only time I see those artefacts is when I zoom in, not even when watching fullscreen on a PC, so I'm really pleased with the camera on Xperia since the Z3, but all things considered, Sony should have the best smartphone cameras in the world or at least be the top 3.
All that being said, shooting in manual mode is a different story, once you get a hang of it and learn how to use it, it can stand besides the best of them, easy. But that's not really a fair measurement, only auto modes, because that's what most people will use, and that's where Sony usually doesn't do that great.
The phone takes great photos, and I have yet to see a review that says it's a bad camera. It really isn't, it just isn't at the top few as it could be.
As for the XZs, currently it often produces lower quality photos than the XZ, depending on the scenario, it isn't a better camera, it's just different and has different strenghts in different scenarios. Plus, the slowmo gadget, if you care about that stuff. Other than that, there is no reason why it should be a better camera in average scenarios, maybe in low light because the pixels are bigger, but that's pretty much it.
If the quality of photos is your only concern about buying an XZ (or XZs, for that matter), you shouldn't be worried.

Yup, this was pretty obviously stated and samsung did tell people. You can turn the resolution up if you require also.
1920/1080 is 1080p....so 1080P+
its a little more than 1080p. Also I speak from experience that you can not tell a difference unless you are looking for it. It is the same screen resolution on the S7's with nougat.
Yep it is. Lets not blow this out of proportion people if you want QHD+ its in the settings under display.

I couldnt tell on my oneplus 3T, the screen was great.
QHD on a phone is overkill. It's a nice-to-have if you're trying to watch a movie, but other than that it's purely excessive. If someone showed you a 1080p and a QHD display on the S8 or even the s8 plus, I can all but guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I sure can't with my S7E.
The problem is not that 1080p looks bad. The problem is that this display has a set number of width and height pixels which is defined as 2960 x 1440. So if you want to display a picture which is 2220 x 1080 in a display which size isn't a multiple of the picture you have to interpolate. You somehow need to have just 1080 pixels in a row where there are supposed to be 1440. Why don't they go with 720p instead? Well I guess it would also look shi**y :/
Just my thoughts, I have never seen a S7 or S8 display.
EDIT: I just think about this from a delevoper perspecive. The developer thinks: Let's make a black 2px line there -> it's a 2px line.
Because you cant fit a multiple of 1080 in 1440 the interpolation would make a 2,66px line. As you know you cant color 0.66 parts of a pixel black. So most likely the whole pixel will be black which results in a 3px black line where there should be a 2,66px line. As this happens with every pixel of the display the image won't just get inaccurate but also the GPU has to do some very unnecessary scaling work.

It's the same as changing the resolution of a computer or monitor display. The interpolation isn't the issue, every manufacture has that down pat. 720p would make a noticeable difference, even in basic browsing and function. 1080p is enough that on a screen the size of the S8 or S8+ you wouldn't be able to see the individual (or interpolated) pixels.

I didn't say that this is not the same. But when I buy a 1080p monitor, I use it in 1080p because thats what it is intended for. You won't see pixels on a 500+ ppi device. But the image will be totally unaccurate and that's not what I generally like to look at. I just tried this in photoshop and the effect is even worse than I thought and demonstrated by that example picture in my last post. Here's what it'll really look like. You want to look at this? Of course it will be very small pixels but do you really don't mind?! I know I do.

That's not at all what it will really look like. Doing something in photoshop is not even close to how it will look in real life. Please look at the phone before you assume what it will look like. I just switched my phone from 1080p to QHD and back again, and I literally cannot tell the difference, even with my face pressed inches away from the phone.

You can't negotiate with the pixel science
Most likely the pixels are just to small to see a difference but I will take a look at the phone when I get it to judge wether switching to 1440p or not

But don't forget these OLED panels use a diamond pentile subpixel arragement, so the interpolation isn't quite the same as a traditional RGB LCD monitor.
It's REALLY REALLY difficult to tell the difference between QHD and 1080p on the S7. At more than about a foot, it's nearly impossible to tell. I know what you're saying, I hate running monitors at non-native resolutions.
If it bugs you that much, just change it.
If lower resolution gets me another 1hr SOT per day, I'll drop all the way to the bottom. Can't tell the diff.
I just changed to 1080 p on my S7E (was at the highest rez setting). Really can't see a difference. Icons and keyboard are a bit larger. Texts are a bit bigger. But as far as sharpness, look of the display, not an issue. Just going to test and see if this makes a difference much on SOT or not. I can always change back to the highest rez setting if I want - takes about 30 seconds to do.

I use Nova launcher, Swype and Handcent texting app. It changed the size of icons, the size of font, the size of the keyboard and the size of the texts (the bubbles and text font). It did increase the size on all of those. Also increased the size of the quick settings, etc. It's not a big deal, but it did increase the size of things a bit. Has caused no problems so far otherwise.
I just got my pixel 2 today, and I noticed that when I watch a dark video where there are some lighter sections in a black area, the lighter sections appear totally blown out/distorted.
For example, in the following video, the black curtain behind the stage has lighter sections that appear distorted on my phone. They almost look pixelated. This video looks terrible on the pixel 2:

Is this happening to anyone else, or did I just get a bad panel? If I watch that video on my Nexus 5x, it looks fine.
That's a very poorly encoded highly compressed video. There are huge artefacts clearly visible on my QHD calibrated monitor. I think you should find some newer videos to better judge the screen.

I knew it wasn't the highest quality video (although it is awesome), I was just shocked how much better it looked on my other devices. The reason I played it first was because it was at the top of my recently played list, but I should have known it wasn't a good example. Thanks for testing it on another monitor.
I can see the same kind of thing on certain scenes in the new The Last Jedi trailer, but since the quality is a lot higher, it is barely noticable. I really have to look to see it, which seems acceptable to me. https://youtu.be/Q0CbN8sfihY

If you want to check for banding, don't use a video. Use solid colours... Feel free to use the ones here: http://www.nullabletype.co.uk/static/styles/blah.html . No need to install anything, just go to them in a browser and scroll to see different colours and grey scales. If you screen isn't uniform, they'll be visible. I'd check in a dark room with various screen brightness levels.
I currently don't have any gradient ones to try with, but you can probably find some greyscale/colour gradients to play with online.
