8.1 Final - Screen Tinting - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Just wondering if anyone else hates the way 8.1 tints the screen or completely changes the UI color based on how dark/light your wallpapers is?
I wouldn't mind the dark tint so much if it wasn't such a drastic difference going from your home screen to the settings, Google Now or even swiping down and getting white notifications. It clashes very badly, at least in my opinion. Some of the wallpapers even tint the screen an odd color (first two example pics). It's just a weird design choice. Maybe it's just me though. I've never had such a hard time picking a wallpaper... lol
I attached a picture with some examples.
Anyone else care to chime in?

I'm with you man. Like dark wallpapers, but also love the white UI
Don't like this change at all.

Hate the tinting, make it stop!

It's lazy, idiotic and disgusting. And we're stuck with it, with no hope of anything improving in Android P.

This is annoying, especially because of Now Playing album artwork as background feature, because the tint is STILL the wallpaper color! Best solution I've found is to use dark/black backgrounds - then the tint is merely dimming.

Wallpaper colour based Tints are gone in Android P DP4. It's back to a nice, normal, Black Tint throughout.
Thought i'd share the good news.
@ForeverZ3RO

Does anyone know what version of 8.1 gets rid of the screen tinting. For the pixel 2 its the July patch I believe.

Interesting Difference in Screens?

I exchanged my Nexus S for a new one. One thing I have noticed so far is that the blacks don't seem AS dark on the new one as they did on the previous one.
For example, pressing menu from the main screen you get that little popup of black options like wallpaper, system etc...
On my previous device these options were very dark black, on the new one they are somewhat transparent yet still black. Hard to explain I guess but it's a noticeable difference between the too.
I'm not totally sure yet but I think the whites are whiter also.
I wonder which of the phones has the intended look... the dark black or the somewhat transparent black.
wierd.. all the us phones suppose to come with samoled... all the same screen
could be your brightness setting, i have a gingerbread theme on my nexus one and on lower brightness the menu looks solid black, but on others you can see that it's transparent. also depends on the background as well.

Yup. You'll find the tolerances for the screens to be quite low. I've looked at and handled quite a few NS and the screens have been different on every one of them.
As long as your screen doesn't have a yellow tint whilst auto brightness is enabled, you're good.
I remember reading somewhere that some Nexus S phones will ship with SLCD screens instead.

Yeh that will be for the Russian and maybe other markets if/when they launch there early next year.
I had to swap out my second NS for the screen. The last one had a real bad yellow tint to it. When put side by side the new one looked great. Typical issues I suppose. Its interesting to have these little issues with the phone when the Galaxy S line as a whole has been solid aside from reports of GPS issues.

[Q] for those that use the xda app

When you start the app, at the xda splach screen is the bronze / red colour the same across the whole screen or is it like a gradient getting lighter towards the top left?
Just wondering if my screen is duff but maybe I'll be better downloading a screen test app.

No, nothing wrong with your screen for that reason. Just loaded xda and it does change shades from top to bottom.
If you think there's issue with the screen, google search for a photographic color calibration image, that should give you a good image to check with.
Thanks. I thought that was the case as I haven't seen this problem in any other apps or when using the phone normally. Still a relief to hear though!
no clue, i have set mine to DARK theme to safe power.
but when i look at a BLANK WHITE page, the 2 bottom corners just above the 4 soft buttons have a weird purplish gradient, which did not exist in Galaxy S
but that is due the Concave screen design
Mines on dark also but I'm talking about the splash screen that shows on starting the app - whether light or dark theme selected.
No such purple tint here.
The xda splash screen gradient looks a little banded because of the pentile sub pixel layout of the amoled screen. Nothing really wrong with your screen, that's just the way it is with these screens. It's a trade off.
Don't think I'm seeing banding, it's just the fact the xda splash screen tends to lighten as it gets to the top left of the screen.
From what others have said this seems normal though so. I'm not concerned.
Ah got it, I mis read. Yeah I think that's normal.
This is slightly off topic but relevant to the xda app. When I first view a new thread using the app, it always jumps either to the last page or a random page. Or if the thread is only one page long, it starts halfway down the thread. Again this is for new threads I've never viewed before. Anyone else experiencing this or know how I can fix this?
Thanks!

Yep seeing this too and never quite worked out the pattern / reason.
Don't worry about hijacking the thread, my question was answered long ago

on the Nexus S
i have a very nice and smooth dark brown to light brown gradient going from bottom right to top left
on the Galaxy S
the same gradient looks like chopped, chunky, banded, it's like looking at a picture in 16bit color (SGS) vs 32bit color (SNS)

That's originally what I meant with my post cause I see the banding on my screen too. It should be identical since these screens are literally identical I believe.

Can burn-in be removed with apps (e.g. Display Tester)?

Hey everyone, I bought my HTC One S used, and at a discounted price because of screen burn-in. The burn-in isn't noticeable at higher brightness settings, but when there is a dark background applied, or when the backlight is dim, you can clearly see burned in areas.
Has anyone had any success using any burn-in removal techniques with apps like Display Tester?

Just realized this should've been in the Q&A section.. woops!

What exactly is screen burn-in? Is it the same as the screen has different color depending on what angle you are looking at it? My experience is when i look directly on my screen, it show some yellowish in white background, but when i tilt it forward or backward, the white becomes white with no yellowish color. And when i turn it sideways it become pinkish.. do you think my screen is busted? Or is it what you call the screen burn-in?

Yeah, exactly how you described it. Looks yellowish/orange depending on the background

^-That's a good example of what a screen burn (or is it image retention?) looks like. Found this image on Google just for the purpose of an example, it's clearly not from an HTC One S haha
My friend who uses the HTC Sense clock has developed minor screen burn from having the clock widget in the same place since day one of his phone

TC is probably referring to ghosting. Kinda like
http://www.pixeltuneup.com/images/screenburn.jpg
or to a lessor extend but more common
http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/5523/2005fpwsw2.jpg
Notice the faint icons? As to fixing it, I don't believe there is a way other than replacing the screen. It happens when an image is displayed without movement. It sort of "burns" into the screen, and when viewing something else, its slightly visible, thus "ghosting"
As for the yellow tint you see in the whole screen, I believe some displays are just like that.

tbh i wonder what would happen if you attempted to burn in the color inverted (dont do it, lol)
But most likely a new screen, which isn't too expensive.
If you had a big enough discount, it'd be no problem.

[Q] yellow tint with CM,normal color with ColorOS?

As the title says,MY OPO is suffering from this.Flashed CM or any roms aosp/cm,I found my screen color is normal for the first seconds of booting, then the color of the screen turned to yellow.yeah,it's sooooo much yellow.even I configured in the display settings,it's no use.I flashed back to ColorOS.then the color turned normal, beautiful screen back.
so my question is why this happens,if it's intended to do like this, why?then do you guys have this problem?

It's by design in the CM ROM and a future update will allow the color to be adjusted. The warmer tone is technically more friendly for text viewing and skin tones, etc. but people don't tend to like it as they are used to a cold white. Properly calibrated displays are always warmer, however, because they tend to reflect a more natural light that mimics the sun.

I just posted the same question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/oneplus-display-color-temperature-white-t2801107 probably should be deleted, I didn't see this thread.
But, anyway.. is there any workaround for CM and other custom roms? This yellow screen is annoying, so annoying...
Franco kernel will have the necessary adjustments passed into userspace soon enough, just FYI.
From the man himself, "We already have color control interface in the Kernel by supercurio, I've asked him to expose the controls to userspace. Once that is available I'll add the code to the app."
i had the same issue, when i was on cm the whites are so yellowish i thought i had a bad screen. but when i flashed color os the
yellowish tint was gone. so ya its a software issue with CM

Lock Sreen Font Colour Keeps Changing

Hi there,
I recently upgraded to an LG Velvet 5G running Android 10. For the most part, it's been great, but when I set a custom image as the background of the lock screen, the clock font keeps changing from white with no outline to black with a white outline. At first I thought it was just the pictures I was using but it doesn't seem to make any difference; if the text is on a light background it still sometimes appears white and vice versa. I also wondered if it had something to do with the automatic night mode setting because it seems to change around twice a day, but disabling that doesn't make any difference. Is there any way to disable this feature? Google searches and digging through the menu haven't helped so far. I'd be happy with it always remaining one or the other or being able to choose which it is, if that's an option.
Thanks!

Hi, benpeltz.
I'm on a Velvet SD845 not a 5g. But I've noticed it a couple of times.
I had a G8X before it and it happened a lot more so I think it's some kind of LG bug.
Peace,

LOL, no problem.
Oh, may I ask you something regarding your Velvet?
Either I'm going crazy too or experiencing a screen issue.
It seems mine has kind of a greyish screen....I know it has a pretty bright screen, but It seems like the blacks aren't really black.
And when I pull down my notifications bar while having something like a movie, or a YT video or even my Settings, the notification bar gets really stained in grey (with the black around) where there's something written in white. Idk if you can understand what I'm trying to say, it sounds confusing and I'm not a native English speaker lol.
But I can try to record it and post it for you.
Anyway, you're welcome and thank you in advance!

Have you tried changing it to "Vivid" screen color? Settings->Display->Screen Color. Personally I felt like all the colors were a little washed out before I did that.

I actually did. But it's not just the colors that seem washed out...it's this thing that when I have a black image with bright letters or a white image surrounded by black it makes a grey stain around the white. I'll post s screen record so you can see it. Man, it's killing me not knowing if I'm crazy or it's something normal, although it's pretty ugly and annoying for me. LoL
There you have it. Hope you can understand me better. It not only when pulling the notification bar, but also during videos or even when using a simple black wallpaper with a bright detail in it.

Are you referring to the "frosted glass" effect, where you see the background faintly behind the drop-down menu? If so, I certainly get it with the drop down but I don't get it when I'm playing videos. I'd appreciate a screenshot of that to make sure I'm tracking with you though.
