SCREEN COLOR VARIATIONS among galaxy S line?

Its strange but noticed that my phones whit coloring looks a little more greenish than my.friends vibrant. And then i compared my captivate to my gfs and here whites r more white colored like my friend.
I don't get it, did a lot if the models come with different screens that display differently?

seems like someone needs a little more research
wait what no the whole entire galaxy s line has super amoled hmm its maybe the tint thats changed a little

A Super ALOMED screen is still AMOLED.
Anyway, just because it is the same model screen doesn't mean there are not variations in the mfg process that could cause slight differences. With the amount of screens that they are pushing out I am sure they are using equivelent components that may not be exactly the same.
Also depending on the allowed tollerances, 2 screen with slighly different temperature ratings could both still pass QA.
Personally my screen is very cold, whites tend to have a slight tint of blue to them. I prefer warmer displays but the SAMOLED is too nice to ignore even if the picture is cold.

It's possible that the screens are going through a rapid break-in process and the screens look different because they have been used different amounts.
Or it could just be differences within manufacturing tolerances.

This follows the rgb thing in a way. I think different screen manufacturers favor one of the latter.

That's funny cause the AT&T commercial specifically says "The first and only Super AMOLED screen" or something of that nature....

screen is fine, got mine on launch day,,,im sooooo loving this phone,i was using omnia2....

AT&T says a lot of things.
The entire Galaxy S line up has Samsung's "Super AMOLED" screen.

They may make the screen, but that doesn't mean they make all the materials used to manufacture the screen.

Different materials cause wider manufacturing tolerances. It's not different manufacturers favoring one color over another in this situation.

I really wish there could be a straight answer instead of speculating why our phones are cooler and warmer in color. I mean the screen still looks freakin great, but i wonder if there is a way to manipulate it through software.

I agree. I would love it if phones finally started letting you adjust color temperature like computers.

My screen is also blue. I´m waiting it to go away in time, but I´m really sceptic about it...
It´s easy to test after you download somekind of a flashlight app and use it in the dark, mine gives the same blueish light like those cheap led-flashlights, so definytely not real whites in my unit...

There is no such thing as real white when it comes to light (what your screen is putting out). I would prefer the screen to be warmer, but it is still white.
For more information look up color temperature.

The HTC Desire and Nexus one on Cyanogen Mod both allow you to adjust gamma settings via software. So this can definitely be corrected. All it requires is additional dev magic and a dab of patience.

That's interesting,i hope someone is working on color temperature too.

Somebody else mentioned it but "manufacturer tolerance" is what causes this. It would be possible to make them all exactly the same, but the costs of the device would go up significantly. Usually the difference is so minute that most people never notice.
You see the same thing with mass produced digital projectors and tvs. If you were to take 10 new projectors of the same model and line them up side by side you would find not all the pictures were exactly the same. Due to manufacturer tolerance some may be slightly brighter or dimmer and colors may be a little more vibrant on another.

Blue Tint
Yes, Super Amoleds are coming in all forms of Tint. Some are lucky to get nice warm whites. Other people get green, blue, greenish blue, or even yellow tints.

When you start the app, at the xda splach screen is the bronze / red colour the same across the whole screen or is it like a gradient getting lighter towards the top left?
Just wondering if my screen is duff but maybe I'll be better downloading a screen test app.

No, nothing wrong with your screen for that reason. Just loaded xda and it does change shades from top to bottom.
If you think there's issue with the screen, google search for a photographic color calibration image, that should give you a good image to check with.

Thanks. I thought that was the case as I haven't seen this problem in any other apps or when using the phone normally. Still a relief to hear though!

no clue, i have set mine to DARK theme to safe power.
but when i look at a BLANK WHITE page, the 2 bottom corners just above the 4 soft buttons have a weird purplish gradient, which did not exist in Galaxy S
but that is due the Concave screen design

No such purple tint here.

The xda splash screen gradient looks a little banded because of the pentile sub pixel layout of the amoled screen. Nothing really wrong with your screen, that's just the way it is with these screens. It's a trade off.

Don't think I'm seeing banding, it's just the fact the xda splash screen tends to lighten as it gets to the top left of the screen.
From what others have said this seems normal though so. I'm not concerned.

Ah got it, I mis read. Yeah I think that's normal.

This is slightly off topic but relevant to the xda app. When I first view a new thread using the app, it always jumps either to the last page or a random page. Or if the thread is only one page long, it starts halfway down the thread. Again this is for new threads I've never viewed before. Anyone else experiencing this or know how I can fix this?

i have a very nice and smooth dark brown to light brown gradient going from bottom right to top left
on the Galaxy S
the same gradient looks like chopped, chunky, banded, it's like looking at a picture in 16bit color (SGS) vs 32bit color (SNS)

That's originally what I meant with my post cause I see the banding on my screen too. It should be identical since these screens are literally identical I believe.

[Q] Screen pinkness (is mine normal?)

Hi all,
Picked up my One S on Monday and, so far, in almost every way it's my "perfect" phone - great feel, weight, crazy slick... just lovely.
However (and why is there ALWAYS an Achilles heel?), I'm really not happy about the screen. Ok, it's pentile, but so was my Desire (AMOLED one) and I never had a single problem with that. It's just this one seems so, well, pink! Not just in white balance, but there seems to be too much red everywhere - e.g. text on grey in Tweetdeck has crazy amounts of red fringing (especially noticeable on the yellow too), and the over saturated colours are almost too much (though not much more than my Desire, to be honest).
(Quick comparison of the screen temps attached)
I mean, seriously, that's not normal, right?
Am I the only person who seems to notice red / pink outlines on everything, am I the only person bothered by it, or am I just unlucky with this phone?
I went to Carphone to swap it, but they wouldn't because their manager was out and because I traded down from the X on Monday (flickering screen nightmare), so I had a play on their display model and I convinced myself the screen on that one was better! But, I'd love a second opinion!

Oh that's really pink! Will check mine when it finishes the first round charging.

I would say this isn't normal. On amoled Displays white areas appear a bit blueish or grey. But this red/pink looks unnormal

no, this doesn't look normal. But the thin red and green outlines are caused by the pentile-matrix, this is normal.

Just download Screen Adjuster and increase blue and green values a bit and your red screen will be gone

That's a v. useful app! It's definitely taken the edge off (green & blue at +5), but I'll still pursue a replacement as the contrast has taken a bit of a hit now.
(I'm such a perfectionist!)

Well, when I say "see" I meant on their own One S rather than on my screenshot.

I sometimes notice it being a bit pink when the brightness is set low, have you tired using auto brightness or putting it a bit higher?

That's looking odd definitely. Let us know if the replacement is better.

mine screen is definitely on the warm side of things (meaning the whites are yellow'ish). seeing how One X has a yellow tint issue (different screen manufacturers involved it seems) and you're playing a screen lottery i wonder if One S is the same. slightly warmer screens is not an issue per se but a strong yellow tint definitely effects the overall brightness and sharpness. i would love to compare different units in store to see if One S with cooler screens actually exist.

This probably won't help you. It won't hurt I guess, but this is something that can be worked out with a software solution. The SGS had something called Voodoo Colors, and I'm assuming that at some point that'll make it to the One S, as it's an AMOLED device as well. The colors changing on low brightness is one of the characteristics of an AMOLED screen.
As a poster above recommended, install that tool and set adjust the values for now. In due time, this'll be worked out. HTC just didnt do a great job with their color profile.

Oh god, dust and dead pixels are my ocd's worst nightmares. I get so depressed when I see them Color Banding will soon be joining them too

Mine has very minor light bleed, but thats it. Its only noticeable if I'm looking at a pitch black screen in a dark room.. so its pretty much no problem

Only issue I'm having is that the screen is too bright for the auto brightness.
Other than that it's perfect

Gradient banding and light bleed (bottom right corner).

I have a yellow screen. But for me, I am getting intermittent screen flickering, specifically in Chrome and Messages.
Furthermore, I already have tons of micro scratches on my screen. Have no idea how they got there. Glad I picked up a screen protector for $3 on amazon and Ordered a Seidio Active Case also. Don;t want this beautiful screen to get a jacked up.

No issues here either.

You could try Juice defender. It has an option to change the auto brightness, both the maximum light, and the average light (and minimum)
Only thing I miss there is an option to disable it while charging or in the car.

My only issue is banding. For those who DON'T have banding, I would appreciate if you'd check out my thread on the issue, especially if you're able to post a photo of your phone's screen.

I don't think so. Take a screenshot when you see banding, then look at the screenshot on your computer or on another phone. When I tried that, I saw less banding on the computer and on my old Captivate than on my One X, viewing the exact same image.

I have banding, but it seems more like a software bit-depth issue than a physical problem with the screen.

Guys, I wish it were this simple, but it doesn't appear to be. I can use Paint.NET to make a gradient, and view that same image file on many screens, and my One X shows more banding than the others. It still doesn't look as bad as the One X's app-uninstall screen, which is likely because my gradient is linear and theirs isn't, and so on top of there being bands, they're also unevenly spaced! But there's no denying that the bands are there (at least on mine), and they're more apparent than on the other displays I have access to (another phone, a laptop, and a TV).

I meant a driver-level firmware issue. When I had the Nook Color, there was a kernel that enabled lower bit-depth to speed up the boot, but it introduced banding like this. There was another kernel that could show full 24-bit color and had no banding.
So just loading an image onto the phone isn't proving that is a hardware issue. This just makes my argument stronger with the uneven banding being related to bit-depth and not hardware.

I have no screen issues! @TinyBoss I saw your other post and I have to say your banding does look bad. I was leaning toward software until I compared mine to yours and I'm thinking you have a bad display...

As of now we all know that almost all s4 units is suffering from smearing issue. After fiddling with some apps here and there I found a temporary solution , this should be handy until Samsung fixes it.
I suggest two method for this issue, Method 1 adjusts the rgb values of the screen(overlays) .Method 2 adjusts the contrast levels of the screen.
With both the above mentioned methods the black levels are not pitch black but will be on par with the blacks of s3 or anyother amoled screens. I prefer method 1, if you guys face any problems with method 1 then you can try method 2.
Method 1:
1.install screen adjuster app from market.
2.Set the values of green, blue, red between 5 to10(I prefer 5) and turn on the filter
3.job done
Method 2:
1.install screen adjuster app from market.
2.change the contrast level from -0 to -10(you can go upto -20 depending on how far your eyes can balance between smearing and pitch black)
3.turn on the adjuster.
4.job done
Method 3: (HARDWARE LEVEL FIX ONLY FOR 9500 USERS)
This method fixes the smearing at hardware level and changes contrast level of black backgrounds without touching other colors and dosent drains battery like screen adjuster. Thankst to @AndreiLux and @Slimmer77 for their contribution on screen calibration for 9500

1.Install a custom kernel that supports screen calibration.
2.goto screen tab
*enable register hook
*set digital brightness reduction to 0.
3.Flash the attached zip file
4.job done
Users who hate the non black background(especially it looks poor when used along with smearing fix) introduced by samsung on newer roms can flash teh blac background mod attached in this post
Note: Running screen adjuster on background will disable the "install" button while installing apps manually, so disable screen adjuster before you start installing something and resume using screen filter after the installation is over

Personally, if you can fix or at least hide the issue with the above then at the very worst Samsung may change some settings in later roms to the same effect. I am hoping that it is actually a driver issue and a proper fix will come along....

Won't this affect battery life? It seems to negate the power saving effect of AMOLED. I believe the smearing comes from the pixels going from off (black) to on (grey) and that switch time not happening fast enough. This app and workaround does definitely work, but it seems that it works because it's changing everything from black to veryyy very dark grey (still looks pretty black to me) however that means that the pixels aren't off if they're displaying grey instead of black right?

That's how the black looks on s3. Now I can understand why the blacks are pitch black in s4 compared to other galaxies to some extent.

I believe this is indeed the case. Samsung could fix that by maintaining the pixels lit at the lowest power level, like with the previous Galaxy phones. I'm not sure if it's worth it though. Hopefully there'll be some even better work-around.

thats how samsung displayed the blacks in their past galaxy devices. With s4 the black pixels are completely turned off which is not the case with previous galaxy devices. hence even if samsung rolls out a fix they will simply make something similar to what we acheived with "screen adjuster". and dont forget you can still tweak the values in screen adjuster and find the best balance between black and smearing effect, the value "5" mentioned is suitable for me , it may or may not suit others.

so thay fu*ked up display also on previous phones and hide it behind the worse blacks really bravo samsung. I have my SGS4 from yesterday and have to say I see it clearly, the edges of grey lines are getting to purple colour. But I dont care because I can see it only if Im focusing on it. But for normal use you focus on text and what are you looking for and not to some grey lines right? So, Im rather happy with my super deep blacks...maybe some good AOSP/AOKP/Cyanogen will replace TW interface...

It's not ****ed up but that's the way you can get the best out of amoled, lcd don't even have these features, even with this fix the black levels are way better than any other lcd screen in this world

I'm not impressed by the screen at all, dead pixels, really bad ghosting and the screen turns pink at the bottom.
HTC One screen at least only had dead pixels.
