OK GOOGLE with screen OFF and NOT charging works in Oreo beta! - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey not sure if they just forgot to block the keyword detection in the betas or what, but im ecstatic as Ok Google now works with screen off and not charging, without any hacks to make it work. Take a hint samsung, we dont want Bixby, we have google assistant!

Finally! Is getting on beta program hassle?
Also does the AOD rotate yet too?

I flashed the beta like outlined here, and all is working great, i even used the home_csc and didnt lose data. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/guide-oreo-beta-usa-snapdragon-s8-t3700907 You can save some download time by downloading the sprint version AQGL from http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?record=C18873D0936C11E7963AFA163EE8F90B instead of sammobile.

Did you flash QKM?

You must be on AQGL baseband, as outlined in the thread but you can get that image from updates and it's a faster download.

Do you know if it is possible to flash to XAS from XAA without carrier switching?

Note that there is a strong possibility that this is actually dictated by google play services , probably at the request of samsung.
Actually currently on nougat with my current play services i dont get assistant with screen off and charging. It did work previously and I can probably manually roll back, SOS sadly once Sammy oreo is finalized, they'll give a nod to google to disable Assistant on screen off again.

I believe so, I was on verizon, rooted with samfail. I just odin'd the sprint version, then updated the oreo beta from my sdcard. Works GREAT! Battery life is wonderful, everything is butter.
Everything is verizon branded too, in case you were wondering.

OK googl not working with screen off despite of explicitly allowing voice unlock, is a bug. If it is gone, it is fixed rather than enabled.

I would say its completely a DD. I havent had one problem.
Also, Bixby was the reason for the Ok Google hotword not working, it doesnt work on any galaxy, but works flawless on aosp.

[BS_FREE_Lollipop_5.0_Rom_BOK3_Based]

This is a modified version of @jrkruse stock BOK3 deodexed ROM with all(or most) of the stock BS removed.
This BS_free ROM does not have two different versions like his previous build. I left only the Samsung apps needed for UPSM and HD calling to work.
INSTRUCTIONS:
I've included the links needed if you want to use xposed and Viper4Android. If you chose not to use these features, then skip them in the flashing process.
I personally prefer using safestrap when clean flashing a ROM, but you can use flashfire if you must.
1) WIPE EVERYTHING!
2) Flash No_BS ROM
3) Flash Extra toggles
4) Flash No_Bootloader_Rooting_Tools_For_S5_Lollipop_V3.zip
5) Flash xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-snapdragon.zip
6) Flash Viper Policy
7) Flash Viper4Android
8) Flash BOK3 Firmware without bootloader
9) After first boot, open up Viper4Android and install the driver. Note: Sometimes it takes 2-3 times before the driver will install.
I have confirmed that @jrkruse 5-way reboot with Safestrap works on this ROM!!! If you want to use it, add it to the end of the flashing list. 5Way_Safestrap_Reboot_PM. As a side note, if you use 4-way reboot in Wanam Xposed, then that feature needs to be disabled for 5-way reboot to work.
The ROM should boot in about 8 minutes. The music app will force close everytime the device reboots, but it does work normally.
Forgive my lack of knowing how to make a build thread, since this is my first one, so I'm still learning lol.
NO_BS_BOK3_ROM_DEODEXED.zip
Update: NO_BS_BOK3_ROM_DEODEXED_V2 is now available. The flashing process is the same. I encountered an intermittent bug with SuperSU beta with some apps. I downgraded to the latest stable SuperSU with the latest app. I updated all other apps and got rid of the bright/ugly Verizon boot animation. The music app has not force closed since I started using this version.
Update: NO_BS_BOK3_ROM_DEODEXED_V3.zip is now available. The flashing process is the same. I updated busybox and removed SBrowser. I also implemented the signature verification fix by @jrkruse, along with default animation scales set to 0.5x.
Update: NO_BS_BOK3_ROM_DEODEXED_V4 is now available. The flashing process is the same. I updated all apps, except for YouTube(xposed purposes). I added the missing VPN apk as well. Let me know if there is any other issues with VPN related settings.
Update: NO_BS_BOK3_ROM_DEODEXED_V5 is now available. The flashing process is the same. I updated all apps. I added the headphone app notification, voicenote, and SPrintSpooler. I don't use voicenote or SPrint, so let me know if there are any issues with these apps.
Note: Don't pay attention to the 1- prefix in front of some of the ROM versions. I prefix all my flashables in my ROM folder with a 1-, 2-, 3-, ect, so that I have them all in order when I flash them instead of having to remember the order every time lol. I forgot to remove those prefixes when I uploaded the ROMs.
I am looking forward in seeing how this Rom is doing.

Works like a charm! Just wish someone could get Quick Glance working. I've seen it work in MOAR, but the 3minit mod that's included is a complete turnoff for me.

I'm on BS_FREE_BOG5_GOOGLE_V2_Deodexed and just updated with @jkruse New Root Tools For S5 Lollipop V6. Already enabled Lollipop Safestrap Recovery again and Flashed Most Current OG5 Firmware_No_Bootloader and current OG5_Kernel. Can I just use that and wipe everything flash this aside from 3Minit Battery without losing Root?

No, I mean using the V6 Root Tools instead of the V3 as indicated in your directions...
Also, I'm hoping that with a new install I will regain ability to work with Accessibility Options in Settings.
Idk if it makes a difference but I have Original GS5 Rooted, never taken OTA, always ONLY used XDA sources for ROM/Firmware/Kernels.

My rooting tools has the newest firmware, I just forgot to change the version number at the end, but it does say no bootloader.
I wish you luck on the accessibility apps. I never use them, so I don't specifically look for them to work.

Rooting PK1 and unlimited Tmobile Hotspot

I' m hoping some experts can chime in.
I rooted PK1 about 10 days ago. Followed the Verizon S7 forum that had clear instructions, and used the v15 fixes + debloater.
I made sure the governors were set to interactive.
Despite all this, my phone was extra buggy and had lag, compared to stock. It seemed to get worse with time.
Then on day 6, after root, my phone started boot-looping on the tmobile logo and vibrated.
I un-rooted back to PIA, and tmobile still seems to be monitoring hotspot use, I thought was part of the PK1 OTA.
So, my questions are:
1) are those rooted on PK1 stable, like stock? OR is there still stability issues, beyond adjusting the governors to interactive?
2) what are people using to successfully circumvent tmobiles new hotspot throttle. ( .5kbs or pay $25 per month).
xtether module in xposed, or WiFi Tether Router (root). ??
what is working?
thanks in advance !
I'm not on the PK1 firmware yet, but I just upgraded from PG1 to PIA.
As far as performance goes, I found this thread VERY helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...uide-fine-tuning-performance-battery-t3417804
Maybe it will serve well for you as well. As far as rooting is concerned, not too sure from personal experience, but I heard the ENG boot works with the newest firmware and I'm guessing the modified SU should work for it too.
If you would like to try reverse engineering the files yourself, maybe these guides will help out:
http://arm.ninja/2016/03/04/reverse-engineering-samsung-s6-modem/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/how-to-reverse-engineer-kernel-t3137384
http://www.fortisfio.com/extract-android-rom-for-reverse-engineering/
In regards to removing bloatware, I prefer removing apps over services because you never know when you might need a service that you accidentally removed from a previous time. Also I've been going through many cases of trial & error with removing bloatware and a few times ended up messing up other apps in the process that would force crash, but with my current setup everything seems to be working well.
If you need help with removing bloatware, there are 3 apps that really helped me out.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.piriform.ccleaner <-- Surprisingly ccleaner is awesome for the android as well as the PC.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en <-- this is very useful as well
Another tool I found very great and you run this from your computer is Debloater: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294
Hope this helps. I'm trying to currently work on a way of creating custom odin flashable roms so I can optimize roms to the best of my ability and provide the community with more options as well. This is still a work in progress though. :S
EDIT:
Here is an output of my program list. It was too long for me to post directly in the message
adb shell pm list packages -f
thanks a lot!
I have read about ENG boot being an improvement as well, yet nobody is stating that it is stable as it is prior to root, just improved lag, performance and stability. I know in my experience, root, for the first time in 8 years of rooting is not worth the benefits. This is sad. Must be stable. (in addition -no roms, no nanroids, no samsung Sumsung Pay..etc..etc..) So I'm hopeful things will change soon, or will be forced away from Samsung. Tmobile privacy invasion issue, and bait-and-switch with their plans is even further less encouraging news. Imagine "unlimited" = less.... wow.
Well said, and I completely agree. I've been a BIG fan of previous Samsung models, but it seems with every new model that comes out there are less and less options for customizations. I'm currently in the process of trying to figure out how to repack tar.md5 files *properly*.
I've gotten close, but then it fails right at the very end. I'm still waiting for a response from someone hopefully with more knowledge than I, but I guess I have to be patient. Here was my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s7/help/creating-flashable-odin-file-t3500139
Any way, I'd love to see more customization for the S7. I think it's a great phone and it has so much potential. I also love android and always felt it gave users more ability for customization as opposed to Apple. Like you, I just hate all the bloat ware and all the crap that comes on phones these days. Not only that but the markup price is ridicules. Having to pay $600+ for a phone that is "laggy" due to all the bloat on it is frustrating to say the least. This is why I'm trying to give the community more options or at least steer them in a direction to customize their devices easier. Currently despite all the various amounts of software that is provided through this community I feel like there aren't too many people that know how to properly use it.
Any who, good luck with your phone. Let us know if you figure anything out with it. Also, are there any significant advantages with the newest firmware over the PIA? I usually like to hold off from upgrading right away so that all the "kinks" get worked out first since it's difficult to downgrade afterwards.

I was rooted stock and I used the fixes.zip , I stopped using the debloater because my phone had issues after.
Its bootlooping because you accepted the security update popup.
You know what, that happened to me once, I forgot. What I needed to do is reflash the ENG boot file then when I got back into the phone, remove and reinstall SU. After your phone restarts, go into playstore --> you apps --> and uncheck "Auto Update" for Super User.

yes. If your using the firmware in the verizon rooting forum, that stumped me too. It doesn't work.
Must be PIA (sept 27) or newer. I got the firmware from here The sammobile site.
and flashed fine with odin. Then used the established root method from the Verizon forum, using only the V15 fixes and NOT the bloatware remover.
Still testing the root stability (2 days driving). Seems ok, but not as stable as stock so far, but acceptable for me. Cool, no battery drain, but have noticed some lag/ and buggy things that I'm deciding whether or not was a settling that was not apparent on stock w/o root.
In addition, when I was given this loaner phone from the N7, the store migrated all my data and apps using the built in sammy prog. I was concerned how this would affect my phones performance in the long run. 3 "upgrades"/ swaps later of the same technique of migrating apps/settings/data between different phones took it toll. So the bootloop issue earlier forced me to unroot and start fresh, without a choice.... The proper PIA flashed on my device (no root of course) was rock-sold stable for the few days I tried it.

Thanks for the response. I have a SM-G930T and the firmware I am running currently is the " G930TUVU4APIA" stock. I just am using the ENG boot file and removed a bunch of apps myself (not using the v15 debloater or fix). Any way, the PIA firmware is still a little sluggish for me, and I was thinking of going back to "G930TUVU3APG1", but every time I try to flash it through ODIN I get an error. Something similar to "SW. REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 3".
And I didn't think that a verizon firmware would work on a tmboile phone? They're completely different hardware? Like GSM vs CDMA? Or am I missing something?

NO you need the Tmobile files, available in links here, or better from the sammobile.com site i mentioned above.
I would never flash verizon firmware on a tmobile-connected phone.
In addition, are you following the verison unroot method from the verizon s7 rooting guide? the verizon root references for me were just where the best info is for all S7 people, but the software links are to older firmware that didnt work...
Basically, you are using odin to flash ALL files at once (ie AP, BL, CP, CPC), then you are back at tmobile stock as per date of package used (PIA, PG1..etc).
Earlier versions before PIA do not flash, for me. I believe this is b/c i took an OTA security update that did something to prevent this. PIA worked fine for me, and is working not bad.
I'm satisfied for now, and I will wait for stable Nougat before anything else, and done with customizing and playing.
I hope this helps you

Android P Preview available NOW for Essential

Talk about fast! Finally a justification for owning more than one PH1
https://www.essential.com/developer/android-p-developer-preview
Essential ph1
Hi owner of another mystery,
How's your experience with it assuming you checked it out? I'm always reluctant to install OS betas until I've heard some feedback. Thing is, Essential PH1 forums/discussions are virtually non-existent for this SUPERB device! Now that PH-2 sounds like it's dead-in-the-water, I hope but with full confidence that support will continue for the PH-1 as it has all along. Any day we should get a security update; their monthly updates beat the competition by parsecs.
But the P beta, right? Thoughts from any of the intrepid?
So far so good the only crashed I experienced was Asus file manager. Other than that signal somewhat low.... As always a bit spotty. But really enjoying the new features. I was navigating on Google maps and went home the nav window minimized like picture in picture on a TV. Really pleased so far.

I have flashed the p preview and can't get NFC to work properly. I have relocked the bootloader and flicked the switch back in developer options. But I still can't get NFC to work on Google Pay. Anyone else have the same problem before I flash back to Oreo again.
Do you get an error? btw the nfc chip is on the bottom back of the phone

Gotta use either a custom kernel... Or Magisk to hide the unlocked bootloader
I sorted it in the end by relocking the bootloader and I found out that the NFC sensor is at the bottom of the phone and not the top by the camera!
Battery life was very good in 8.1 it is markedly better in 9.0
I just moved to the latest beta by side loading the ota through adb. Everything runs fine except I'm getting pretty high Google play services drain, but no other issues.

New StatiXOS OFFICIAL 4.2 build for Essential PH-1

StatiXOS
Download StatiXOS for free. StatiXOS is a homebrew distribution of Android. StatiXOS is a custom ROM based on the Android Open Source Project aiming to be minimal and clean, while providing quality of life improvements and up to date security patches. This page is to provide downloads for...
sourceforge.net
4.2 has been release
"Introduce our OTA Updater!"
For those with the Chrome issue of freezing I have a fix that another user in another ROM thread accidentally found!
If you download
PH1-OTA-PQ1A.190105.090.zip
and then reboot into recovery (TWRP, be sure to disable pin on phone before hand and backup everything) then flash the above (I wiped everything first but DON'T wipe internal storage) then I did a second wipe of everything but internal storage and then I flashed 4.2 of StatiXOS and then I flashed TWRP, then I rebooted phone and set it up from new and restored everything from Cloud backup and I can confirm that I no longer have the Chrome freezing issue.
You can thank seungbaekm over in the Evolution-X 5.4 thread for this fix as he is the one that accidentally flashed the older PH-1 factory image and discovered Chrome then worked again! This should fix the issue for all the new Android 11 ROM 's out there for us folks that have the Chrome browser locking issues.
I did not even test the new 4.2 ROM on its own to see if it happens to fix the Chrome issue but I doubt that it does since it is not mentioned in the release notes. Also I have no idea if any of the other original factory images will also fix the issue, I only downloaded the one they he said he accidentally flashed and used it.
Hope this helps everyone with this issue as I know how frustrating it has been. Sure, there is the Bromite/Brave/Firefox work around, and I have been using and enjoying Bromite since 4.1 but I like having things working the way they are supposed to work.
Thanks you very much
I will test
Following this great insight about the fix of the Chromium issue, I only flashed mata PQ1A.190105.090 NOVENDOR firmware from this old thread, without wiping anything of my current StatiXOS 4.2 installation, and after booting Brave is working perfectly.
So, it seems the issue was caused not by the ROM system or vendor, but the mata QQ1A.200105.007 firmware.
As a consequence of flashing this old no system nor vendor firmware, my device baseband was downgraded, but mobile data seems to be working just fine. I guess it's possible to test newer firmware available at the referenced thread, like PQ1A.190105.112, QP1A.190711.107 or QP1A.190711.148, to identify the latest firmware free of the Chromium issue.
More good news: now Netflix is working fine, also.
UPDATE: I tried all the these firmwares and Netflix worked fine only with the Pie ones. So, PQ1A.190105.112 is the more recent mata firmware that I can use on my PH-1 with StatiXOS 4.2 in order to keep Chromium browsers and Netflix working.

This is some great news, thank you and SirDigitalKnight for the research! I haven't tried this fix yet, but I'm planning to when I flash this week if I do run into the chrome freeze problem. You mentioned this downgrades the device baseband version. I'm not too familiar with that, you did say it's working fine so far, but do you think that could cause issues in the future?
Just a question, does StatiXOS have slim recents included?

I have no idea if using a.Pie firmware could have side effects in the future. So far, I haven't seen any.
Using the StatiXOS Telegram support group, I shared the information about the different firmwares to the devs, so I think they'll tell us if something can go wrong in the future.
Is anyone else having issues with sending a text message with this rom?

Double Post
Just reporting that I did a clean install - "Fastboot -w" on the latest working firmware (JAN20 FW, FEB20 Vendor iirc) and I'm very impressed.
Plus replaced the screen, battery, and buttons cable and now the phone is "essentially" new. Parts are actually quite cheap.
Chrome is working without issues.
360 Camera is working without issues
Haven't tried sending SMS with VoLTE On yet.
Amazing that we still a maintainer.

Yup, that worked. Thanks mate..
The March 10th update they pushed out through the OTA updater worked perfectly. It is nice to see we still have good support on this great phone.

Thank you for this! And also thanks to @aamadorj for the further investigation!
It's too much of a hassle for me to do this fix right now, and I admit I have adapted to using Bromite and Firefox, but I'll definitely keep this in mind for some other time when I feel more like it... BTW, I did check, and Chrome stil freezes on the latest 4.2 update, no surprise here.
This ROM has been working great for me, very stable, no issues, and the updates are a breeze, especially with the latest OTA updater.

You should be able to flash the older Pie firmware without wiping from what I have read but I have not tried that yet. I might try it with the very latest firmware of Pie, PQ1A.190105.112 and see if it screws anything up without wiping the phone. Anyway I always to a backup of the phone to the cloud and also of Whatsapp before I start messing around just in case I have to wipe and so far all my restores have worked perfectly, but yes it is a pain to have to setup wifi's and add back in BT devices and setup security and any double authentication apps you use. Getting used to it now though.

Flashing the contents of the attached files using fastboot should make your device to use last firmware for Android Pie, without losing your current ROM installation.

OK, here is my update... Noting your comment in the other post about the downgraded baseband, I decided to exclude the modem from flashing. Flashed everything else from PQ1A.190105.112-NOVENDOR via fastboot, rebooted, and... Chrome froze again. Ugh... :\ OK. I went back to fastboot and flashed the modem - this time after the reboot the problem was fixed.
So, I'd say it's safe to conclude that the modem (baseband) is the actual component that was screwing up the Chromium-based browsers. Go figure...
This ROM is great on the PH-1. At the moment I can't get the LED to blink when notifications arrive. The setting is toggled on.
I've installed magisk, nanodroid and microg (not tried that sort of thing before!). Could that have anything to do with it?

Even with stock rom LED is not blink if you're using stock messages, try Textra and see if it works for you.

C39 is really nice. Need to be on Beta 1 and updated to latest. Super stable and battery life has been the best I've seen on this 9 yet. Faced UI issues while watching Netflix. Dual hole punch out at top of screen on either side and near halfway bleeding black arches. Once Netflix closes it stays on screen for a few seconds then goes away. That's really the only issue I had on C39. BTW, 9(non pro) TMobile converted to Global. Everything works fine,no data issues or anything

Are you running 11.2.9.9?
TMO EU MSM conversion back to stock,
Speed through set up and Unlock bootloader ,
Update to 11.2.9.9
Install OB1 and use wifi to update to C.39,
Understand that data will be iffy the first 2 Betas but should catch later during install,
Once updated to C.39,factory reset(optional) and let sit. Data will catch after a moment.
Every reboot data will stick, just takes a bit.
I run it rooted with patching boot.img and run magisk v23 no issues
No need to use TMO MSM anymore. I haven't used it in a long time. I always stay converted so I use the conversion MSM always
