Preventing background apps - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Has anyone been able to prevent bloatware apps from running in the background on 7.1? Specifically, the built-in Facebook and Messenger apps are sucking power and I want them to die in a fire.
I've tried:
1) TitaniumBackup "Freeze"ing
2) Battery Settings->Close Apps After Screen Lock
3) BackgroundRestrictor
But inevitably those zombie apps rise up again within a couple hours to appear on the "apps using power in background" list.
Please help me kill them and bury them in the desert where their bodies will never be found...

Good thought, but the "Disable" button is... well... disabled. I thought all stock apps were like that, but I'm seeing now that some are, some aren't. Not sure what the diff is.

L04, running B360. I think that's the first Nougat version, they may have changed the stock apps in later releases that I haven't installed yet.

Make sure neither app is listed as an administrator in security settings. They shouldn't be but that would prevent you from disabling them.

Uninstall the apps and install again from Play store.
That worked for me.

[Q] Apps Restarting

I recently upgraded my ATT Captivate to 2.2. I now have a problem with apps starting up on there own even though I've going into apps management and have killed them. I even have app killer and its not automatically killing the apps. These aren't the att apps, these are apps that I've installed.
How can I prevent apps from starting back up. Its killing my battery life.
Thanks

Get os monitor and check how much mem they use. If u see one that is always over 20%, uninstall it.
Also u can stop ur running services.

What BW said. Don't worry about them in there unless you find one using up too much battery/resources. They won't drain your battery unless it's a bad app.

You could try unistalling your task killer and getting Advanced Task Killer (it's the one I personnaly use). Now killing a app won't stop it from restarting, you usually fix that in your running services. Also make sure that these apps arent widgets - in that case they will always restart

Actually, its Advanced Task Killer that I have installed. Yes, I totally understand apps vs. services. I'm stopping the services for the apps that have restarted, yet they continue to restart after the service has been killed. These apps are definitely not widgets.

Umm, may I ask what are these apps?
The only app that takes couple tries for me to stop if the facebook one. Also, some app are made to constinusly refresh and get info from the internet. If that's the case with your apps, block their internet connection or change their settings to have it refresh manually.
Also, you can tell some apps not to start on boot up - that might temporaly fix your problem.

I duno about colornote but as for the others, they automaticly refresh using the internet and so like I said in my other post, you have to set it so the either can't access the internet (might as well unistall them in that case) or set their refresh to manual so it only refreshes when you "tap" on them.
Google maps refreshes for your location. That one will be a pain especially if you have the gps on.
If you get over a day of battery life with moderate usage and that you like these app, then I'd say to just live with it. If it's not the case, I suggest getting rid of them but if OS Monitor doesn't show them using your mem/battery, then they don't actually do/change much.

once on the app, hit your menu button (bottom left one ) and you should have a setting option - each app will be different but it mostly comes to the same thing. Also if you don't have any menu option, there should be a (i) kind of image/icon somewhere in the main app page but these are rare. Most app will have their setting menu.
Thanks. I'll try it and see what happens.

Glad I could help

Ads popping up in notifications.

For the first time in 6 years of Android phones, I just had an ad pop up in my notifications. It was for the Walgreens drug store app. (An app I do not have installed.)
From googling, it seems it's pushed from an app I have installed, but it should be easy to figure out as I've only installed 2 new apps on this phone that I didn't have on my last phone.
Has anyone else experienced this? What apps have you found that do this?
(This is not cool at all.)

Do as guyd says. If it happens again with another app and the notification is still there, hold it until it changes, then press the "i" button that appears. From there you can do the same.
Note that you cannot block notifications from most system apps

A typo in my original post must have made it unclear - the ad was for an app that is not installed. I have no idea what app is pushing the ad.

Regardless, if you hold down on the notification it should show you the source app (not the app that is in the ad, but the app that's pushing the ad) and you'll be able to take action by tapping on the "i" button.

Ugh. I do use Chrome, but I have not visited the Walgreens website on it. (Or ever, anywhere.) I'll see if removing it helps. Thanks.
So now Chrome isn't only the worst desktop browser, it's the worst Android browser. That's an accomplishment.

The ads come from other apps. Chrome has never placed ads in the notifications. This is done by something built into the apps. I forget what it's called of the bat. Airpush I think. Some apps do this to make money when they are free apps. There is an app that will detect any app that does this. Then just uninstall it. The above device will cancel notifications completely from the app causing it.
Had the exact same experience on both my S6 and my wife's. Something fishy, no indication what app caused it.
What carrier are you on? I am on Sprint, and their bloatware apps "Sprint Zone" and "Sprint Fun & Games" like to advertise apps in the notification bar every now and then. I hate it, because there is no way to disable the apps unless I root.

Sprint as well. That's unfortunate as this will be my first non-rooted phone due to Samsung Pay. I was hoping android/Sumsung had come far enough that I didn't need to root/rom, but it looks like I'm in for a frustrating experience.

I think maybe so. I took a screenshot of one today. (I don't know how many have some through as I often just swipe off notifications without looking at them. This was at least the second one today, as right after I swiped one of them away, I decided to make a conscious effort to screenshot the next.) I forgot to press/hold until the "i" shows up to see app info. I'll have to remember that for next time.
Sprint - Featured Apps <-- That's the culprit. You'll want to disable notifications on that application in the settings menu, under all apps, or uninstall it, which is what I did.

Thanks. Also, mine showed the option for uninstall, and it seems to have done so. I wouldn't be surprised it if auto-reinstalls, though. Hopefully this works. THANKS!
Its from Sprint Featured Apps. Block its notifications. It can also be uninstalled from Applications>all>uninstall.
I had that same thing happen with my samsjng galaxy s6 from Sprint. Its infuriating adware bloatware.

I think I'll just install a custom ROM

Voiding the warranty will not be a pleasant thing to do, but I'm annoyed as hell by some of the things that are happening in ZenUI:
- Disabling Google apps i.e. chrome, duo, YouTube is futile since the apps turn back on again.
- Since chrome can't be permanently disabled I can't click on links in apps such as Sync for Reddit without chrome opening automatically asking me to use Chrome.
- Some accessibility settings that were turned on randomly turn themselves off after a reboot. In my case it happened to a password manager that was suddenly no longer able to auto fill fields in my browser.
- I can't seem to switch songs with my volume control . Simply a feature I really miss.
I'll give them one update to see if either of the above improves. If not I'll install a custom ROM.

I was also having a fit trying to disable Chrome, Duo, Photos and Youtube - they were all just being enabled again, rather quickly.
It seemed to happen once via Playstore downloading languages for something, could never catch exactly what triggered this.
Anyway, after several reboots and redisabling, it hasn't happened for two days now.
Don't miss disabling the 3 Facebook system apps.
They at least have remained disabled.

I don't agree.
I think Asus has done a very good job with this one.
All the custom roms seem to have all sorts of various problems.
The 4 Google apps Asus had to preinstall to keep on the right side of Google.
As long as they finally stay disabled, I'm ok with that.
The Fakebook stuff is more serious, IMHO they made a bad judgement call installing the Fakebook stuff.
(Maybe they get paid for doing that?)
But the apps don't seem to do anything while disabled, I have Netguard monitoring them.
And I haven't found anything else problematic at all yet.
.
Advice from some 5-7 year old threads just came in:
Disabling the app "Google Partner Setup" will stop the automatic re-enabling of other apps.
I have not tried this, yet anyway.

Thanks for this. I didn't stumble upon such a thread when I was searching for a solution. Let's see how it goes.
As for ZenUI, it's definitely not the worst and I like how little bloatware is included. Perhaps I'm a bit quick with my judgement and I'll wait for a next update.
The fact that apps that require accessibility settings cease to function after a reboot until I simply open that app is a huge pain in the ass tho. Examples include: bitwarden and swiftly switch (pro). Hope this gets fixed. I was wrong in saying that the accessibility toggle automatically turns off. I assumed that because said apps don't function as intended after a reboot.
As for custom ROMs I'll definitely wait. I went through the threads and there seem to be quite a couple of issues that need to be ironed out first. Flashing a ROM now might open new doors to other problems that are bigger than the ones I'm facing right now.

As someone who just spent a week trying to get LOS installed and is going back to stock, I can testify that custom ROMs are not ready yet. All of the necessary elements (recovery, ROM, gapps, etc.) have multiple showstopper issues. Add on to that the confusion caused by A/B partitions. I've never kept a phone stock before, but I'm flashing stock and will check back in 6 months to see if custom ROMs are stable by then.

Agree with disabling of accessibility features.
I use FliudNG for gestures (highly recommended especially for 6z) and I have to disable and re-enable it's accessibility, then re-enable the app again after a reboot.

I have been tracking their potential attempts at internet access via Netguard, and there is none.
So they do seem to stay comfortably disabled.
The other preloaded apps that I repeatedly had to disable have also remained disabled for a week now, so that problem seems to have gone away.
(Or are they just waiting for a wakeup signal from the mothership? )
Have someone tried disabling apps using Island or similar Android-for-work software? It says that it can work without root by setting the software as a device owner using adb... Because with every possible app disabled (GP, FB, etc) their folders on Internal Storage still recreated after removal.

General Samsung Health Platform Battery Drain

Was prompted to install this app. Not even clear to me what it does that Samsung Health doesn't do, but one thing I do know - it drains battery like crazy - as much or more than the display, and it was killing my watch in under a day. Uninstalled, and battery life is back to normal.

Yes, definitely health platform.

I wouldn't remove it unless you know exactly what it does.
Try clearing its data and clearing the system cache.

Yeah, I was prompted to install it last week (week before?) I'd been looking in Play Store for uninstall but ended up disabling in Settings > Apps and it doesn't appear these any more. I'll reboot the watch and see how I get on (I've got a Samsung phone FWIW, not sure if that's affecting things)

But I've managed to get it back and a lot of things sync to SH without using their app, I e. Yunmai my smart scale used to sync with the app, but now won't pair with my phone through the app, but sync weight and BMI directly to SH. Go figure...

Question PROBLEM WITH YOUTUBE APP

Guys I have a very tired problem with the youtube application, I cannot close it, I open the app, I watch a video, then if I decide to close it by pressing the close button, it does not close and forces me to use the home button, this only occurs with the youtube app, do you have any advice apart from clearing cache and uninstalling and bla bla, I have already tried these solutions.
Mine does the exact same thing.

Fair enough. Just a thought. This means the issue is in the Youtube app. Good to know. I just press the task button and swipe it away.
Sorry, but I do not find that something to worry about.. When I'm done, I just hit the home button done.. Not trying to be sarcastic, but to me that is a none issue.

don't you think that the mere fact of having to press the home button indicates something that is not working well? not to mention battery drain.

It's not draining battery if it's not playing. Completely closing apps doesn't save battery in most cases.

Obviously. But it's also well documented that closing apps completely on Android as opposed to just let them stay in recent apps, does no good for battery. It can often have the opposite effect, as letting the app sit in recents and cached in ram, uses less battery than starting the app up from scratch every time you go to use it. Not to mention that in Android many apps and services call on the same background processess to run. So when you completely close an app to "save battery" the system will often fire up the background services again immediately anyway since they are needed for other apps as well.

Of course, but all this in a normal situation, the thing changes when an app is not working as it should, the mere fact that it does not close with the close key invalidates everything and you have to investigate what is not working and if there are ongoing conflicts, in this case battery drain is assured, this is confirmed by the fact that every time after using the home button, if you go to battery and device care, he says optimise now, and go to close one background app closing and guess, it's always youtube, moreover in history you will see a report that youtube had some problems closing.

@pjaysnowden how did you gain Vanced version?
I try to patch it with Revanced but can't install old version of YouTube.
Install an old version of YouTube
I downloaded YouTube ver 17.36.37 from apkmirror and install it, it work well. Yet after restarting my phone its name changed, it crush, and the ver changed to 17.40.41. Of course I did unmarked the auto update on the play store. Any advice?

I have had Vanced for a while...and I saved the manager.apk file onto my PC. It still downloads the latest working versions.
Please delete explicit song anything could delete, when update please could fix it
I use one handed operation, which has a gesture option "close app", it works fine for me with vanced
Also worth trying (if Vanced is dead for you):
- NewPipe
- LibreTube
Both available via GitHub & F-Droid, and work without root.
ReVanced is now a thing too (replaces Vanced):
ReVanced
Continuing the legacy of Vanced. ReVanced has 25 repositories available. Follow their code on GitHub.
