Battery instantly dead now when phone gets cold and drops fast below 40% - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hey guys, so last winter I had no issues, snowboarding and taking the phone out, it was cold but battery was good. I noticed the past month or 2, now I noticed when battery drops to about 40% it drops fast! And when it dies if I plug it in for a short time it'll bump up to say 30% fast and discharge slower. I ran the battery discharge app, it drained down fast to about 2% then slowed, stayed at 1% for about 18 mins in the app before the phone finally shut off... , when it gets even a bit. Cold, say i left it in a 5 degrees celcuius location for 15 mins, it'll die. I thought huh? Plug it in for 5 mins and bam 68% percent. Today I was out snowmobiling, about - 2c or about 26f? The first half the ride it was ok, airplane mode on it had 85%, then get back to the vehicle and look at it, it was off, try and turn it on, it showed 0% and shut off. Let warm up and bam back to 80%....
What's going on? I think a battery mis calibration? It's bizarre and I've Googled but havent found a fix. Thanks!

Well, I'm thinking a few things:
1. Batteries hate the cold, and can be very sensitive to temp changes/certain temps where they really drop off efficiency. Age and cold can certainly add to their stressed unreliability.
2. If your battery is doing well in more normal temps, drops to say 40%, and then drops fast, followed by a recharge to 30%,where it discharges slower, maybe because the charging heated it a bit... ? So it's performing a tad better ?
3. Seems less possible that there is a short, but could be a temp sensitive short. I have seen those in electronics and cars, though the initial description has the feel of a battery going south.
If it remains stable to 40% and higher, and either the 40% lower threshold or temp get's it, perhaps changing out the battery would be a safe bet.

Thanks for the reply. I got reading a theory that as the battery ages, internal resistance goes up and when it gets cold it really shows, but who knows. My. Best bet I think is just to replace the battery.

I think I figured out why the battery never seems to go below 100%

My original device always seems to take forever to go below 100%, and I just got a new device that has the opposite issue - it never goes above 94%. So I did some further tests, tonight.
My 94% device goes down fairly steadily once unplugged. But, the device at 100% does not. Also, when the 100% device is drained and I recharge it, it still says it's charging when its at 100% - so what does this mean?
I think that the battery calibration is off, as we already assumed. So, my 94% device is really 100% and I suspect that it would survive beyond 0% as it probably still has 6% juice left in reality. And, in the case of the 100% device, it's probably mis-calibrated to 105 or 110% (or more?). Since the UI can't show you 105%, it just shows the max of 100% until it goes below 100% which can take some time. I also suspect that the device would cut out at 5% or 10% since it's actually drained completely.
So that's the reason, I think. As to the fix, I don't know. What's weird is that these two devices are so different in terms of how the battery status is calibrated.
How can this be fixed? Or "Recalibrated?
I'm letting one of them completely drain, to see what happens.
At least the 94% one gives me an idea on what the battery life is, since I can just tack on +6%. But the one stuck at 100% is a complete mystery - it could be 5% off, 10% or even more.
Also, these run on 2 cell batteries making 7.4V nominal. All the devices before are using single cell batteries at 3.7V nominal. So Android may have issues with that voltage difference.

I had the 100% battery issue before and it took a long time for it to dip below 100% (so long that it seemed unreal). Later I decided to let it drain to zero before recharging it to full again. Since then the battery indicator seemed to behave normally and discharged at a normal rate when the tablet was in use.
Have you tried deleting /data/system/batterystats.bin to wipe battery status? Mine sits on 100% for ages so I'm trying this now.

I tried that once, by setting it to never shutoff and letting it go over night. The next morning I charged it to green plus 30m as someone suggested in the TnTL thread, but I still had the problem of the meter sticking at 100% for a long time.
Anyways, I installed 3.0.0(TnTL) on monday and decided to also use the CWM clear battery data option, and now it seems to be dropping more as expected, but I'm not entirely sure that I did it completely correctly as by the time that I did the clear battery data option it would've been below 100% charge since I did so AFTER running the update.zip... just have to wait and see now...
Battery Stays at 100% For Ages
My battery stayed at 100% for ages the first time I charged it. Then it dropped quickly and cut out around 50%. I recharged it and it seems to be behaving more normally now. It still seemed to hang at 100% for a while, but no where near as long as the first time. I'm waiting to see at what percentage it dies this time.
my zt 180 tablet never got above 94% also. And it dropped pretty quickly and at around 40% it seemed to get a second life and slow down, but eventually it went all the way down to about 10% and then I would charge it (about 3 hours max). It too is a 7.4v supply.
My Odroid T had a 3.4 supply and it was pretty linear, showed charged at 100% and went down accordingly, though the developers had some issues with a few software releases where it did behave erraticaly and they did a few patches that fixed it.

I also had the issue of battery showing 100% for a long time and then cutting out around at 50%. One of the posts mentioned doing a battery stat wipe in CWM after charging to 100% + 30 minutes.
I did this with a little twist of my own.
I allowed the battery to drain completely and tab to shut off. Plugged in the charger and immediately did a battery wipe in CWM. Allowed the battery to charge fully upto 100% + let it be on charger for additional time till the battery symbol in the notification bar no more showed charging sign. Again did the battery stat wipe in CWM and then rebooted the tab.
Since then i observe that the battery has been draining as it should be expected to. down to 72% after about 4+ hours of use. I will still be monitoring the battery discharge further for two or three more charge cycles. But I feel doing battery stat wipe in cwm 2 times at full drain and then again at full charge might have helped caliberate it properly.
Let me know if anyone else tries this and gets same or different observations.
Try installing this to measure your current usage over the life of the battery... (dont have a GTab and still considering). Since most likely this widget and the battery monitor are using the same API we will see if its a hardware sensor issue or a software issue...

I suspect its in their battery monitor and not the sensor or API... if that is the case it should be easy to debug (if you have the source). Typically these issues are due to poor polling algorithms...
Im new to android so I am unfamiliar with profiling capabilities of the platform...(Still learning)
Perhaps this will be one of the 'little fixes' that will be present in the latest FW update when VS drops it tomorrow. I have the 100% unit BTW. A fix would be nice.
Reading this thread this morning it got me thinking about my gtab battery situation. When I first got the gtab, the battery stayed at 100% for hours, then the percentage dropped like a rock. Over time, the battery dropped in more regularly, although it drops in large numbers (like from 100% to 83%, then to 67%, and so on). I'm currently running TnT Lite 3.0.
This morning I charged the battery to 100%, and while plugged in (to the AC outlet), I reset the battery stats using cwm. The battery today has been steadily going down throughout the day as I would expect. In over 8 hours, I watched the battery go down steadily from 100% to 84%. So far, so good.

Tried draining once, just let it sit, didn't fix it.
Tried again but this time I kept the screen on and watched the voltage, shutdown was near 6.8 volts. Now the meter is accurate. YMMV...

I was in the same boat as most of you. Took a very long time to go down from 100% and then zonked out completely at ~10-15%. It's now been charging for a few hours and it's been sitting at 100% for quite a while but the light is still red (so it's still charging) which means it will probably happen again looks like it's charging to some value over 100% and when it discharges, knocks out while the meter is still reading as having juice. Roebeet is 100% on the money.
I am going to try the CWM battery value reset some of you mentioned to see if it does something once my light is green, then I won't charge it and watch it like a hawk once it hits 20% to see if it shuts down at 10-15% or a value less than 3% which is acceptable I think.
I never had a problem on my stock(ish) g-tablet. That is until I installed the latest update.
I had to do a data wipe before any of the cosmetic TnT changes would show. After that the battery now seems stuck at 100%. This wasn't that way before, so I will try draining the battery, and see what happens.
Since I found that this was tied to my latest update, I think that I should call CS and complain.
My battery drain didn't make a difference, either. Still haven't pinned down a fix that works.
At least those of you with 94% max have a general idea when your battery will die. With us "100% forever" ones, we have no clue.
Actually, I may not have a problem after all. I have had my tablet on for about two hours. It is now showing the battery at 86%.

Battery behaving wierd!!

Hi all, i have SNS just few day old, the wierd problem with it is that no matter what ROM i am on, the battery stays good with consistent discharge pattern till around 30%-35% after that it just nose-dives and goes to zero within 45 min... i have done everything i know like tested different roms, with/without any apps, JB, CM9, ICS, GB, everything behaves same. I also tried to calibrate the battery by 3-4 charge discharge cycles, removed battery stats, but still it persists.
While charging back from 0% it charges rapidly till 30%, much faster than normal, also sometimes if its at 20% and i remove the charger, after 5 min it would show 22%!! i dunno what to do now... Anyone has any idea?
I'm no expert but that does sound like your battery is crap... how long does it last on a full charge? Does it get especially hot or something? I mean if it were a software issue, the power would go somewhere and that's either display or CPU, with a battery drain like that your phone should be glowing and steaming after 45 min.

Well no, i dont think heat is an issue... even when it dips from 35% to 5% it does not heat up... when charged, during the night too i get 5-6% battery drain which i assume is ok... it lasts around 15-16 hrs till 35% so thats kinda ok i guess but after that it just goes haywire... no clue... i tried to calibrate many times but it just does not get better...

In that case swapping ROMs/kernels won't help. I suggest you get a new battery, but that's just my opinion. A drop like that in such a short time without the device getting hot is definitely not normal
Any one know where can i find a genuine battery who would ship internationally?
But why wont the battery discharge gradually? lets say even if its bad say 1200 1300 mah it should discharge faster than the normal one but atleast at a gradual rate and not suddenly like it does on mine... even after calibration??!!

Recently changed my battery for no real reason but the fact that I had another fully charged and couldn't be bothered plugging phone in.
So off for the rest of the day I went, noticed instantly that battery was lasting longer. At 60 percent I had exactly 2 hours screen on and by the end I had gotten well over 4 hours. My old battery used to get that but after update to 4.3 I was getting less (approximately 3 hours). Getting less battery time after the update was normal to me as not many people know that from 4.2.2 to 4.3 samsung removed the brightness reduction profile used in specific apps like chrome/browser to conserve battery (80% of full brightness setting). This was done to get battery life points at release date.
On top of that I noticed the phone was cooler and more faster, this however was not major just a more stable sense of feel.
Now the point of this post is to find out why, now I know there are issues with batches of battery's but unsure of its implication.
Another possible theory is faulty battery causing higher heat output and power loss which could also have at times caused throttling of phones performance to prevent damage (which we all know it does, quick example is using phone heavily while charging)

I am pissed at Samsung. My phone nearly burned a hole in my pocket and lost its juice inless then 30 minutes when it approached 30% battery. I went to the battey tab and took a screenshot of its discharging curve! No surprise! The battery was hot and lost nearly all of its power in less than 15 minutes. I have yet to take it to Samsung to get a new battery before it catches fire!
Any recommendation on how to prevent that from happenening?

Buy a other battery, you can get one cheap on ebay (Don't buy one that is really cheap, they are mostly ****ed up) :highfive:

That isn't the battery's fault; there is something on the phone that is using up 100% CPU (explaining the heat and rapid battery drain).

Agreed. Although, the battery could be the start. My phone gets extremely hot. I check the CPU usage and it's being occupied no matter how many times I clear the RAM.
If I'd be you, I would start from the battery callback... I would look if my battery is not swollen, if its serial is starting with BD...
but, it is me. I have a strange behaviour to start from looking if similar problem occurred for someone here in the past...

I bought this phone a month ago. At first the battery lasted quite well, I got around 5 hours of screen time with battery life to spare. Unfortunately, about 2 weeks ago I accidentally left the phone under my pillow and fell asleep on it- causing it to overheat a tad bit (I woke up 3 hours later and it was very warm to the touch and had turned off). After charging it up, I continued to use it normally but noticed that the battery would drain a little bit quicker than normal. Before I could easily go around 10 hours with heavy use and have 40% battery left, now after 10 hours it's left with about 15-20%. I am a heavy user but I haven't properly checked how much screen time I'm getting now, however I'll update that later.
As for the main problem- last night I charged my phone before sleeping (100%) and when I woke up in the morning it was turned off. I turned it on only to see that my battery had drained to 0% while on standby all night- whereas overnight I usually only lose around 2-3% battery.
After charging my phone up for 15 minutes- the battery level again returned to 100%. I only charge my phone through my laptop via USB. What happened here? Is my battery deteriorating? Should I get the phone replaced? I would appreciate any input on the matter. Thanks.
Also I've attached the screenshots showing how my battery died and how it was quickly restored. Can someone explain this occurrence?

Your sudden battery drop has nothing to do with what happened before.

No reason to return your device, its a know issue.
Drain your battery completly then charge your phone to 100%, turn the phone one and leave it to charge a hour more. Essentialy you have to recalibrate your battery.
So a brief update regarding SOT.
I left home with 90% charge this morning. Used the phone for 8 hours and it went down to 20% - granted, with heavy use.
Got 4.5 hours of SOT. Is this about average? imo I feel like this falls a bit below average. Ill check other threads as well and compare, but as far as I know, I feel like I should be getting a *little* more juice out of my phone. Data connection was on throughout, and some games were played and pictures taken.
Anyone else feel like they're getting sub-par use out of their battery?

Battery draining super-fast, on an irregular basis: How to check real battery health?

Hi everyone,
I have a Leagoo T5c with a more-or-less 3,000 mAh non-removable battery, and for the past few month, battery life has been somewhat erratic. The phone would go from, say, 50% to 10% battery in no time, and I would get the low battery warning, but at other times it could hold at around 45% for a while before really going down for good.
Last night around 8pm my time, the phone went completely dead while the battery indicator in the task bar said I still had about 65% left.
I tried what's described here and there as battery calibration: I left the phone turned off, patiently waited a couple hours (yes, yes, that long) for the battery to reach 100%, then left the phone off for another hour before turning it on.
In a matter of minutes doing nothing more than checking my Twitter TL, the battery went from 100% to around 85%, and was still there went I tucked in for the night, leaving the phone in Airplane mode as I always do at night.
This morning, I turned Airplane mode off and the battery said it still had 82%, which means minimal drain during the night, with all radio off.
Just a few minutes ago, the phone went completely dead after the low battery warning, and the battery held less than 10% charge.
WiFi is off, cellular reception is very good where I live, and anyway, I don't see how LTE could kill 70% of the battery charge in less than half an hour, even if reception was spotty, which it's not.
I plugged the phone into the charger it came with, put it in Airplane mode again, and it went from 10% to 70% just now in less than 30 minutes.
I know for a fact that fast charge isn't supported on this phone, at least not with the OEM charger, plus it has micro-USB, so I doubt the charger can feed it that much juice in so little time.
The charger itself seems to work fine: It never gets hot while charging, not the Leagoo, nor my old iPhone 6, since I use it for both devices.
So, long story short, is there a way or tool to ***really*** know what state that battery is in? I've tried both DevCheck and CPU-Z, and both say that the battery is in good health, and still retains its nominal capacity of more or less 3,000 mAh, but I have my doubts about that.
I think the battery capacity is reduced somewhat, and I need to know by how much.
Any help and input would be much appreciated!
I must add that I flashed a stock ROM on this phone (yeah, again...) a few days ago, so maybe it's the ART cache being replenished that's causing my battery issues, but still, the problem is so inconsistant that I don't know anything anymore...
I had to flash the stock ROM again after trying (again...) to root the device (successful, but doesn't bring anything of value) and finding it barely responsive.
I'm gonna leave the phone as is, ROM-wise, but my battery is still a matter of concern, because it dies on me at the 60-65% mark more often than not, though two days ago I let it drop to 30% without the phone shutting down.
Like I said, it comes and goes. I really need to know if that battery still retains its nominal capacity or not. Any help in that regard would be most welcome...
