Recently changed my battery for no real reason but the fact that I had another fully charged and couldn't be bothered plugging phone in.
So off for the rest of the day I went, noticed instantly that battery was lasting longer. At 60 percent I had exactly 2 hours screen on and by the end I had gotten well over 4 hours. My old battery used to get that but after update to 4.3 I was getting less (approximately 3 hours). Getting less battery time after the update was normal to me as not many people know that from 4.2.2 to 4.3 samsung removed the brightness reduction profile used in specific apps like chrome/browser to conserve battery (80% of full brightness setting). This was done to get battery life points at release date.
On top of that I noticed the phone was cooler and more faster, this however was not major just a more stable sense of feel.
Now the point of this post is to find out why, now I know there are issues with batches of battery's but unsure of its implication.
Another possible theory is faulty battery causing higher heat output and power loss which could also have at times caused throttling of phones performance to prevent damage (which we all know it does, quick example is using phone heavily while charging)

I am pissed at Samsung. My phone nearly burned a hole in my pocket and lost its juice inless then 30 minutes when it approached 30% battery. I went to the battey tab and took a screenshot of its discharging curve! No surprise! The battery was hot and lost nearly all of its power in less than 15 minutes. I have yet to take it to Samsung to get a new battery before it catches fire!
Any recommendation on how to prevent that from happenening?

Buy a other battery, you can get one cheap on ebay (Don't buy one that is really cheap, they are mostly ****ed up) :highfive:

That isn't the battery's fault; there is something on the phone that is using up 100% CPU (explaining the heat and rapid battery drain).

Agreed. Although, the battery could be the start. My phone gets extremely hot. I check the CPU usage and it's being occupied no matter how many times I clear the RAM.

If I'd be you, I would start from the battery callback... I would look if my battery is not swollen, if its serial is starting with BD...
but, it is me. I have a strange behaviour to start from looking if similar problem occurred for someone here in the past...

Possible battery solution (fix)

Fellow universal users who suffer from battery problems, i know this issue is reccuring and is in many threads and forums now. However i am sorry to increase the talk in another thread. I just thought i would share my peice of advice.
Attached is a pic of the universal battery and below is a little procedure that you might wanna try.
Lets say your universal battery is dying after 10 mins and you just had charged it overnight (meter says it died at 95% or whatever.. ) here is what you do.
1- take the battery out locate the pin provided in this pic attached. its the second pin from the top if you are holding the battery with the connector being to the upper right corner (just see the pic)
2- cover this pin with a thin peice of tape that you will leave temporarily. till the battery fully dies.
3- turn your universal on after placing the battery in it again
4- change the power settings in a way that leaves the universal on for all the time unless you manually turn it off.. so all the power savings are off.
5- let your battery drain all the way until it just turns the universal off.
6- take the battery out and remove the insulation from that pin
7- turn your universal on again and let it charge overnight or till the light turns green.
8- this fixed my universals' battery and now mine turns off at 5%
p.s. while the universal is running and the pin is insulated you will notice that the battery indicator that shows the percentage left doesn't work. (thats the whole point making the ppc blind and not being able to read how much is in the batter and take full advantage of whats in it as far as power goes, this will make the battery realize that it was drained more than usual and forces it to recalculate or recalibrate itself.
by the way you will also notice that the universal wont be able to get charged while that pin is insulated. so again my advice is fully charge your battery , take it out, insulate the pin then drain it all the way , take the insulation out and recharge until light is green.
please post if you had a successful result and hopefully for all who are suffering from this battery problem now they have one more hope.
This is what they call "Resetting" or "Formatting", nad while it's good for NiMH and neccesary for NiCd batteries, it can actually prove harmful to the LiION battery of the Universal, since it may over-deplete the battery.
Use with care, and only if you can't afford a new battery, since this might leave you without a battery!
Deeply discharging of Lithium Batteries
People may remember the videos of burning Dells and Macs. Deeply discharging lithium cells puts them into a critical stage. You may loose a bit more than only the battery ...

i monitored mine and was playing games on my uni until it turned off once it did then i took the tape out and fully charged it.. then viola it worked fine. i dont see any risk plus yes there is in the lithium batteries a problem similar to the nicad research about it and verify.. anyway you dont have to follow, just saying this worked on 3 of my batteries.

NiCd yes, but those are of a completely different architecture. There's something called the Memory effect there, which means that the battery retains the previous charge as the threshold for the next charge, meaning they can't be "topped up", because then only the "top-up" can be drained from the battery.
Lithium Ion batteries retain this memory effect too, that's true. But in them, this is nearly insignificant, meaning the can be topped up at any time, even at 99%, and the almost full charge can be drained. Almost, because there is a minimum threshold beneath which the internal mechanism changes and the battery becomes unusable.
That is why I recommend against deep-discharging the batteries. What I did once was ordered a battery, and noted that it came with a six-month warranty. Now I get a new battery on the warranty(free) every six months, regardless of the state of the old one. But usually by then it startsx to show signs of weakness...

Unfortunately, the Memory Effect in Li-Ion batteries can be made worse if the battery is of low quality and/or has impurities in it (due to manufacturing or age). This is why our original, top quality, batteries are dying (due to age) and the cheap ones we buy off ebay are pretty bad (low quality)

I second that. This may be a fix, but be careful!! As with anything in these forums, it caries its own risks.
Probably best just to buy a battery from a respectable shop\dealer and get a warranty with it...
hey guys ... i´ve tried it ...
i think it works, give it a try.
takes 4-6 hours to completely discharge, the i´ve loaded it one night long. today i´ve played long time with my colegues at work, used bluetooth several times, hat some calls... and now, after 10 hours without charging it has 45 % of charge.
at the moment i turned the brightnes to the maximum, with wifi, beam, phone and bluetooth on, to see at wich percent my universal will turn of.
i give you a notice if this happens.

sounds great try to guve it another shot if you want .. fully charge it and then put the tape on until the universal turns off . maybe you will get closer to zero like i did and if not then.. meh 19% isnt that bad compared to people shutting off at 40 and 80 ...
the only reason i came up with this method was because i read in the wiki that some pople discharged using led or whatever to depelte tha battery or even on bootloader. i thought about it in a way that would make mnore sence using the device itself to deplete its own battery (think about the ammount of power tha led will be drwaing vs the amount the ppc will be drawing ) maybe the chip in the battery claiberates itself on the ammount of draw ... most likely not but it crossed my mind like that so i gave it a shot and it seems to be an exploration by surprise

It sounds very much like "deeply discharging" to me - you are disabling the sensor which is also the failsafe circuit!!! The sensor is not there just to "annoy you" by shutting off early, it's there for safety reasons!
All Lithium ION batteries shut off quite a bit BEFORE they are fully discharged. This is because a truly 100% discharged Li-ION battery (or even close, like 95%) becomes unstable, and this can cause it to set on fire, leak acid, and even violently explode causing you serious injury or burning down your house (people have actually been killed by exploding Li-ION batteries). This is rare yes, but it does happen and it has happened.
We all know that the sensor in some Li-ION batteries can lose its calibration over time, though this is NOT due to a "memory effect", NiCD batteries were the only chemistry which suffered from that problem. But you have no way of knowing if the sensor is really de-calibrated, or it is shutting off because of a fault with the battery, or even that the battery is just nearly dead.
For gods sake people please be careful, this hack may look "cool" and yes it probably will work on quite a few batteries, but it can also be extremely dangerous, and is just not worth the risk, especially when you can get a new battery for less than $20!

in germany you have to pay nearby 50 -60 $ for a new battery, and you never know if it is a good one or some old crap.
for that reason i will try to maximise the life of my battery ...

****! It worked on my UNI. I've used my original battery which is about 2 to 2.5 years old. As of now still 77% after 8 hours with beam on, bright max, gprs on. WOW! Thank You!!!!!

[Q] Faulty Battery?

So I've had my Samsung Galaxy S 4G for over a year now. Rooted it many times with no issues. Until recently, my phone's battery meter seems to be messed up. Sometimes when I charge it to 100%, I use it for maybe an hour and it reaches up to 60%. Then, it randomly shuts off as if the battery is dead. I reboot it and it tells me to Connect my charger because the battery is 0% which is weird because it just said it was 60%. It shuts off again immediately and I wait for like 10 minutes later, then reboot it, only to see it say I have 40%ish left. I have already used Battery Calibration because it has worked in the past but now something seems to be wrong. I even use the Doubletwist Music app and it seems to be draining my battery life significantly more than usual as well (1 hour would take up about 25% of my battery) and the random shut-off because of "low battery" life occurs. Is this a battery problem ?
Try the one click gremlin remover, or flash another ROM. You can also try wiping cache, dalvik, and battery stats if you haven't. If the problem persists then you're probably looking at a bad battery.
Check your battery physically, if is bloated/swollen, then it is defective and needs replacement. but if not, then try going back to stock GB and see if the problem persists.
Take it out, put it on a flat smooth surface. Spin it on both sides. If at least 1 side spins like more than one or two circles, it's broken.
Thanks guys. I never thought a battery would get bloated but when I took it out, I immediately noticed this and haha in regards to the post on top, I thought you were only joking but you were right ! Anyways, I just ordered the same model number of the battery on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ils?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1348188495&seller=&sr=1-1), in hopes that my battery life is back to normal !
Just a note, any recommendations/advice/tips on what you should/shouldn't do in terms of charging a battery. What I usually do is charge my phone every night and unplug it once I wake up. Maybe that contributed to the bloating.
Heat and deep discharge kill Li ion batteries, so your approach is good. Topping it off during the day won't hurt either.

Yeah when the battery is bloated around the middle it means you need a new one. Battery life is not that bad on cm9 with a new battery. The old batteries thats been through a billion flashes and possibly overclocking with overheating and cooling are bound to suffer on cm9. Anyways their cheap on Amazon like $7 bucks for OEM.
I am prob gonna get a new extended slim one.

Serious battery capacity decrease

Hi, I just ran powercfg /batteryreport in CMD. The generated report states that after 30 charge cycles, my full charge capacity has dropped to 27,646mWh. the designed capacity is 31,502mWh, so my battery lost 12% of capacity in just 2 month!!
does your surface also suffer from serious battery capacity decrease? please run "powercfg /batteryreport" in non-elevated CMD and look at the report in C:\Users\*username* please post your result including full charge capacity and charge cycles.

mine is unchanged, reporting 16 cycles. I got the Surface 12/17 so I'm a week shy of two months myself.
I don't let my LiOn batteries deep cycle (drain down past 20%) if at all possible, as this reduces their lifespan.
Yeah my battery report says the same thing, even though I haven't noticed any lifespan decrease yet.
Mine has also dropped from 31,502 to 30,444 and 3 power cycles. Surely the battery can't be degrading already?!
At 34 cycles, mine has settled from 31.502 Wh to 30.214 Wh. It is very slowly losing capacity still (was at 30.740 for a few weeks in January) but seems to be mostly holding steady. The noticeable drops correspond to deep discharge cycles; I'll endeavour to avoid those.
Mines at 28472 with 38 charges. I got mine at launch 10/26/12. This is scaring me. Coincidentally I have noticed a decrease in battery life and was wondering if it had to do with the jailbreak as that is when I started noticing it.
47th cycle now, I still have 30,281mWh. I got my Surface RT at around 25th Dec.
29,415 after 47 cycles. Pre-ordered mine, arrived around launch date. This does seem very weird, batteries really shouldn't do that. Anyone have any experience with getting one replaced? Hopefully this isn't a problem Microsoft wont acknowledge.

That might be the issue perhaps, I have never allowed my battery to drain 100% or 100% charged for too long.
Mine is still at 30k range despite 49th cycle
I am extremely upset about this - in only 25 cycles, my battery capacity has gone from 31,502mWh down to 24,154mWh. And to top it off, I have been wondering why it seems the battery life isnt that good anymore. Is this permanent, or can you condition your battery by not allowing it to drain as much?
I have been letting it drain all the way down, and when i charge it, i plug it in overnight. Obviously this is the wrong way, WTF - you would think that they would tell you about this in manual, etc.
To be fair, this has been common knowledge for literally as long as laptops have been using Li-Ion batteries (well over a decade). I agree that it should perhaps be better documented for those who have somehow never before encountered a LiIon battery, but acting like this is some never-before-heard-of consequence of hard-draining your battery is... weird.
Leaving it plugged in all night is fine; the charger is pretty smart about handling that. Just try not to let the charge level drop below 10% (ideally, not below 20%, just for some safety margin) and you should be fine.

The charging system is smart enough to not overcharge, so you don't need to worry about this.
No one should be "reconditioning" or deep cycling batteries anymore - at least not if they are LiOn/LiPoly.
Got mine 11/4, 22 cycles, down to 25,xxx. Pretty disappointing considering I don't let it die all of the way. I'm hoping this is just an OS reading issue.

I turned off all low battery alerts and forced the battery to run completely dead, and recharged, and now mine has gone up a few points to 28,579 from 28472, with 39 charges, so I think it needs to be reset once in awhile. I however was not aware that leaving it to charge all night and using while plugged in could hurt the battery as others said - Still question that logic. I also have used it to the point of turning off but because Win8 has adjustible power options to force it to turn off when it reaches a certain battery level, I am not sure any of us run the battery down to nothing.
i just wish we could get a stupid battery ap/utility that would tell us battery life left in percentage or something to help us monitor it better.

Got mine on release, I've fully discharges mine about 3 or 4 time mistakenly, cycle count 49, full charge capacity 29,985, given this I've altered my battery plan to give a warning (low battery level) at 20% rather than 6% and to shut down (critical level) at 15% rather than 3%.
Oddly enough, my battery plan has never been adjusted so theoretically it should never drop below 3% yet my battery report clearly identifies it dropping to 1% at one point.
So, are you guys telling me that I should try letting it drain down to 0 and then recharging it to see if it is simply an issue with calibration?

Does anyone else's max stay on 1% battery for hours?

So my maxx will drain to 1% battery in about 3 days with 3 hours screen time. The thing is once I hit 1% it can stay on 1% and not shut off for hours. Right now its been on 1% for about 7 hours, I have a youtube video going just to see how much longer it will go. Its been playing a youtube video now for about 20 min on 1%.
I just got this phone last week, is this because the system hasn't fully calibrated the battery? Or is the battery defective in some way? Its kind of annoying because you think you are out of battery but it keeps going so I don't really know how much battery I have.
Definitely not normal. I'd do a factory reset to eliminate a software issue and if the issue persists seems like it must be a hardware issue, exchange it
These sound like calibration issues. Can you fully charge your battery and then leave in on the charger for awhile -- like an hour or more? That should calibrate it correctly.
I have never nor will ever let my battery get that low. These batteries don't like to be drained and then fully charged it's not healthy for the battery. I don't let my battery go below 30 to 40 percent if I can help it. Most of the time I let it get to about 50 percent then I charge it.

not to be rude but where is you information or evidence backing your statement? this goes against everything i know and i certainly always allow my battery to fully die then i fully charge it over night while it is off, i believe charging at 40 percent fools the battery into thinking that is the end of the battery's daily life span and therefore dying prematurely due to it believing that 40 percent is the end.
I do not have any real evidence except i've gotten exceptional battery life with my Ultra after allowing a full cycle (draining all the way and then fully charging while powered down)...i have gotten just under 32 hours with 4 hours and some odd minutes screen on with about an hour of voice calls and random other usage such as tapatalk browsing, internet, texting and maybe some email or youtube....i occasionally play some games like the new CoD Strike Force

Coming from a Gnex, I have a charger within 3 feet of me everywhere I go. I'm trying to break myself of the habit of plugging it in but mine still gets a charge at some point during the day, if only in the car. It has always been my practice to let my phones run down almost to dead maybe once every couple of months. I feel like it keeps the phone's battery meter calibrated although I have nothing to base this on.

Charge and Discharge Cycles

How many charge/discharge cycles should I expect to get from my S6?
I got the phone in April, and since then I have used it for both business and private use.
I charge it overnight wirelessly, take it to work fully charged, then discharge and recharge it twice whilst at work (using the Samsung charger that came with it), then put it on charge for a 3rd time when I get home ready for the next day.
Fast forward 9 months and already I am seeing reduced battery life... Is this to be expected from 3 charge/discharge cycles per day, 6 days a week?
I've never seen this as a problem until now, as all my phones have either had removable batteries, or were only on 12 month contracts and were replaced before the battery became too worn.
Is it worth trying to get a battery replacement under the 12 month warranty before it runs out?

please clarify what you mean by "reduced battery life". Any phone will suffer reduced battery life to some degree after 9 months.
How low do you let the battery go before charging? Some say it's not good to constantly recharge when the battery is not low (above 50%)? Others say that doesn't apply to newer phones with better battery tech. I don't know.

I generally run it down to 15% when the battery warning comes on... Very rarely to 5% when the critical warning comes on.
When I take it off charge, after about half an hour of screen time, it's down to 80-85 already, then I can get about another 2 hours of heavy use and constant screen time before it's dead again.

Read somewhere reliable some time back that it's somewhere between 500-600 cycles before you see any degradation.. And I think there's something in the warranty which covers reduced battery life within 1st year provided you can prove it which basically means very rare!
