Are modified stock roms worth it? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I have been going back and forth on rooting. I have a Sprint s8+ and know I don't have a full bootloader unlock. So my question is, are the modified stock roms such an improvement that you would endorse rooting over just running unroofed? Was there ever a resolution to the wierd battery thing going on? Just looking for some help from our XDA community.
Thanks everyone.

I used a lot of different custom roms and found there was no real improvement in battery life.
Now i use Light rom for about 3 weeks and i really have a outstanding battery life on this rom, it's super smooth and with GPS and Bluetooth enabled whole day (for my gear S3) I still have about 55% battery left at the end of my day with 3 hours of SOT

back to stock for me

Well I am going back to stock for good (atleast for now). I have been with android for about two months coming from 3 years of iphone. I didnt mind the iphone, but wanted to be able to do some customization to it.
I have played the ROM swapping game since day 4 of having the android. Tried several versions from 4.04 to superlite gingerbreads. The thing is, people always say they get better battery life etc etc... but I have yet to see it.
I keep data, wifi, GPS off when not in use and all notifications off. I love the android dont get me wrong, but when it comes to battery life, the iphone kills this phone. But, in defense of the skyrocket, it has a much bigger screen which I am sure contributes to large battery uses. I have found that the stock version tends to give me better battery life.. so stock it is for me.
I don't really see the additional benefits that custom roms offer over stock for the battery life, despite how often the developers update their custom roms and peddle that they save battery. But the additional features that come with custom roms are indeed nice.
Still, should outlast the iPhone 4S any day. I get over a day's worth sometimes if I'm not doing heavy usage.
If you haven't tried MHX's Superlite 3.1, I recommend it. Using it on GB, I got fantastic battery life.
But understand this, ROMs do have only minimal effects on battery life, the level of debloating being the big thing. Kernels will have a bigger effect when used correctly with good CPU management.
But the biggest effect on battery life is you and the apps you install. You need to watch like a hawk with BetteryBatteryStats and CPU Spy to see what's really going on. See what apps are killing your battery and why. Eliminate the problems and you will be set.

Thanks for telling us?
Another worthless noob post as far as battery life he clearly never learned how to rtfm

Yea... it's like im sorry you couldnt figure out whats eating your battery... but do you really think everyone on here just uses custom roms regardless of horrible battery?
OP, your aruguments might apply for the iphone 4, but no way it does for the 4S. This would be like comparing the original galaxy s. The 727 is a powerful phone and lte is a *****. When i'm on Wifi, i can easily have a 30h battery life, but as soon as i'm on 4G or Lte, battery life is a *****. Its life and until they make some kind of super capacity compact battery, it will be the reality of a decent smartphone.
On the other side, i also reverted from ICS leaked roms to stock GB, unfortunately, stock has always been the best choice for me, much stabler than any rom

Yo try faux kernel with stock gingerbread and if you don't get better battery life then somethings wrong with your phone. I've gotten up to 4 hours screen time on with it. I also froze a bunch of bloatware.
Dude again my aokp I had over 8 hrs screen on

You guys just don't know how to make the proper tweaks to save battery, that's all. It's just lack of knowledge, you'll get the hang of it eventually.

[Q] Looking to get this for my fiancee - battery life on stock?

Looking to get this phone for my fiancee tomorrow and am curious what the battery life is for this device running on stock. (Non-rooted) I have my device (atrix) rooted and all tweaked up but I'd prefer to get her a phone that was just good on battery life out the box. If I don't have to mess with it any, the better and easier.
She uses it moderately: Mostly for browsing tumblr and facebook. Occasional internet browsing. A bunch of texts and sometimes a few phone calls. Can she go through an entire 8 hour day with this device not needing a charge?
Battery life sucks out of the box. She could probably make it the 8 hrs but definitely would have to plug it in after that. From my experience anyway... I came from iOS so it was never really a problem for me till I got the Skyrocket. Low battery life makes sense given the specs. But I recommend picking up the extended battery for the Galaxy Nexus. It just fits in the Skyrocket and gives it a small but noticeable boost. BTW Installing a custom ROM like AOKP or SkyICS makes a HUGE battery life difference. Hope it helps. Good luck!
I'd say at the least just root it and install Titanium Backup so you can freeze all the bloatware and it should be fine stock. Mine was stock for a long time and I would get 10 plus hours of moderate use.

As stated the battery out of the box leaves something to be desires but if u get the time and have the confidence to root then I would definitely flash SeanZ Sky ICS. I am using that now and as I type this I have 14 hrs battery used and 4 hrs of display on. 8% battery remaining. Can't complain whatsoever! As for rooting and flashing there isn't much to worry about now a days. Hard bricks are few and far between with many of them being the result of simple carelessness or flashing roms not intended for their phones. Even this can be fixed though with a $50 jtag repair. Soft bricks only require a flash back to stock in Odin and you are good to go. Sorry to go off on such a tangent lol I just couldn't stop typing. Anyways, battery life is ok but charging will be necessary on stock with medium to heavy use. Hope she enjoys the Skyrocket as much as everyone else here has.

You have 3 options:
Option #1 (Stock with extended battery)
Well if you want to remain stock, the best option is to stay on GB and buy the Galaxy Nexus Battery from a verizon store ($26). With GB and the extended battery and the usage mentioned, I am sure you can go 8 hrs and even more.
Option #2 (Custom ROM with stock battery)
If you are looking for a good ICS ROM, out of the ones the best in my opinion is the Sky ICS 4.2E (17ish update). I know there is an update like the 4.2F, but it did not run as smooth as 4.2E so I went back to 4.2E.
Sky ICS has a good battery life, the new features of ICS, few nice tweaks like an extended power menu, wake by using the volume rockers, and overall runs very smooth little or no bugs.
Option #3 (Best battery life)
Killer combo is Nexus Extended battery + SkyICS, you will get 14 hrs of battery life.
If you dont want to buy a battery, you can just be on Sky ICS (Option #2). Read some threads on how to install the clockworkmode recovery, make sure you make a nandroid backup of the stock GB before you flash the Sky ICS and you should be good.
When my SR came out the box , was on 2.3.6 battery life was amazing with moderate usage ... Many people don't know how to use a lithium rechargable batteries

Nexus 5 is coming to me..i need some advice!

Hi guys!
In the next days the Nexus should be arrive also to me and i have a few doubts about the modding! Then i'm not new to Android modding...i have a LG Optimus 3D and i modded it in every possible ways (change bootloader or baseband, flash custom roms, root etc).
I read a lot of guides about Nexus 5's modding and i think that the modding is not hard!
However i want when i will put out the phone of his box i want only to turn on to see if it works fine and then if the battery is equal or above 60 % i want to unlock the bootloader as soon as i can and then recovery, root(with SuperSU.zip or with a stock rom pre rooted) and franco's kernel!
Then i know that flash things and also unlock bootloader can affect the battery percentage...however my main question is if i will make these things immediately after i put out of the box this can affect in some ways the battery's life? I mean...after the battery will discharge for the first time i need to put the phone on charging for 12 hours? (and then after this 12 hours i can mod my phone?)...i'm really confused about battery because i read a lot of things...someone told that with modern batteries the 12 hours is not necessary someone told that is necessary...
Thanks in advance!
There are a lot of different opinions about extending the life of your battery with proper charging habits (including the first charge)...I've read lots of conflicting information too. But honestly, I don't think it's worth stressing over. If you don't charge it "correctly" the first time, any long term reduction in battery life is going to be very minimal.
The average life span of phones these days is about 2 years for most people, and I doubt you would notice a significant difference within that time anyway (barring any defects). Batteries are built to last much longer than that.
My phone arrived with a 90% charge, so I proceeded to unlock, root, etc. right out of the box like just you're planning to, then charged it afterward (don't remember what percent it was at). No problems here, so you should be fine to do the same.

It won't mess the battery. When I got mine I unlocked the boot loader installed a custom recovery, and made a nandroid. Then I played with it on stock to make sure everything worked. I would recommend that
Thanks to all! Some time ago i bought an extended battery for my Optimus 3D by Mugen...and in the start guide they told the the first charge needed 12-14 Hours and then you can charge the battery every time you want! However i wish that my Nexus 5 will have a good percentage and i can unlock the bootloader, after i will put root or a rom stock prerooted and then the franco's kernel! I want to keep my phone stock because for other functions i will installa Xposed! Thanks for the help guys! Oh and if you have any other advice it will be appreciated!

New user - Kernel on Stock CM

Howdy folks,
New OnePlus One user, coming from a Galaxy S3 after years of holding out on an upgrade.
Looking to keep the phone reasonably stock for now (although some of those custom ROMs sure look tempting!) so I've decided to stick with CM12 (which is what I believe it came loaded with) until the OTA to CM13.
But I'm finding the battery life a bit tough to swallow - I'm getting about 60-80 minutes SOT with a total battery life of about 8-9 hours (email checks, browsing the web 3-4 times a day, one GPS check daily) before I hit 5%. Ideally I'd like to have 100-120 minutes SOT with a total battery life of 16-18 hours before I have to charge.
So I'm thinking an underclocked kernel may be the way to go. Problem is - I'm not sure which kernel is even compatible with CM12 at this point, or what would fit my needs, as everyone seems to have moved on to CM13 already, and I'll be honest with you all - I feel lost.
Can anyone suggest a path to better battery life through kernel?
Thanks in advance!
Go back to CM11S. 8 hours sot on Wi-Fi, slightly less on mobile data. No new features are worth the crippled battery life. All roms after 4.4, both custom and official are plagued by the mobile radio active bug and it hasn't been fixed yet. So stick to 4.4 stock and you will get mind-numbing battery life.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm looking to try an underclocked kernel first on CM12 before I downgrade. Besides, with CM13 around the corner that should help with battery life, no?

underclocking doest do anything when the phone itself doesnt sleep. I'm on CM13 nightlies and doze doesnt work half the time, the other half battery drain is just insane from all kinds of sources (Cyanogen System and mobile radio active). I've had this phone for a year and a half now and I've tried all the roms and kernels one can try but nothing so far has come even close to any 4.4 rom. Again, if you want the newest features and don't give a damn about battery life over extended periods, if you don't spent more than 4~ hours per day staring into your phone, if you charge daily, go for any rom you want. If you want a dependable phone that could keep you going for even 4~ days on a single charge with moderate usage (messages, light browsing, bit of gps) then go for a 4.4 rom. Preferably stock CM11S.

Okay, thank you for your input. Doesn't really answer what I'm looking for, but I guess I'll keep it in mind.
Update - decided to stray from stock and loaded Sultan's CM12 ROM - currently have 3.5 hours SOT and 20 hours total with 40% left. That's good for me!

Back to Nexus 5, longest battery possible ?

Dear Fellow XDAers,
After years of abandoning my lovely nexus 5, I am back and want to use it as my MAIN phone. But before I wanted to get your overall opinions for some questions I have in my mind...
I happened to find some archived photos of my screen shots where I saw I was getting around 4 hours of SOT (maybe even more!) with KitKat with various roms (both stock and custom) and sometimes with Xposed. Over the years I have replaced batteries ( I always tried to buy the originals, hopefully I wasnt fooled on Ebay) of course none of the batteries last forever.
Long story short, I am on stock latest marshmallow rom as of now with a 2-month old battery, but SOT barely goes over 2 hours. So my questions to you:
1. Any rom and/or kernel suggestions with good battery life. I dont really mind the android version, I am okay from lollipop through Nougat, as long as it performs a solid SOT.ā€‹
2. I bought batteries online, which again might be a problem. I would like to know if you know any good source for getting a decent battery.ā€‹
I do appreciate all of you for the amazing, continuous Nexus 5 spirit.
battery life i think many factor, like wakelock, kernel, brightness, radio and etc
i'm now dirty unicorn 6.0.1 DU
and using kernel bluspark
I have 2 Nexus 5's... One is normal with CM14.1
Max 4 hours of normal use (screen on time).
And the secound one is modified with a additional battery that I got for 3ā‚¬ from a friend (Thx Slonek).
https://imgur.com/a/1y3NP
Ill add a picture of the mod later.
Edit #1: The modified one is running PureNexus with the blu_spark kernel. Also that was the SOT at 100% brightness.
Edit #2: Updated the gallery with pictures of the device.
I am also switching back to my nexus 5. From what I have read in the forum people like the stability and battery life. That will suite me. If someone has a better suggestion let me know!
What about the rom? A button in the quick options to switch 2g/3g would help saving battery
