New user - Kernel on Stock CM - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy folks,
New OnePlus One user, coming from a Galaxy S3 after years of holding out on an upgrade.
Looking to keep the phone reasonably stock for now (although some of those custom ROMs sure look tempting!) so I've decided to stick with CM12 (which is what I believe it came loaded with) until the OTA to CM13.
But I'm finding the battery life a bit tough to swallow - I'm getting about 60-80 minutes SOT with a total battery life of about 8-9 hours (email checks, browsing the web 3-4 times a day, one GPS check daily) before I hit 5%. Ideally I'd like to have 100-120 minutes SOT with a total battery life of 16-18 hours before I have to charge.
So I'm thinking an underclocked kernel may be the way to go. Problem is - I'm not sure which kernel is even compatible with CM12 at this point, or what would fit my needs, as everyone seems to have moved on to CM13 already, and I'll be honest with you all - I feel lost.
Can anyone suggest a path to better battery life through kernel?
Thanks in advance!

Go back to CM11S. 8 hours sot on Wi-Fi, slightly less on mobile data. No new features are worth the crippled battery life. All roms after 4.4, both custom and official are plagued by the mobile radio active bug and it hasn't been fixed yet. So stick to 4.4 stock and you will get mind-numbing battery life.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm looking to try an underclocked kernel first on CM12 before I downgrade. Besides, with CM13 around the corner that should help with battery life, no?

underclocking doest do anything when the phone itself doesnt sleep. I'm on CM13 nightlies and doze doesnt work half the time, the other half battery drain is just insane from all kinds of sources (Cyanogen System and mobile radio active). I've had this phone for a year and a half now and I've tried all the roms and kernels one can try but nothing so far has come even close to any 4.4 rom. Again, if you want the newest features and don't give a damn about battery life over extended periods, if you don't spent more than 4~ hours per day staring into your phone, if you charge daily, go for any rom you want. If you want a dependable phone that could keep you going for even 4~ days on a single charge with moderate usage (messages, light browsing, bit of gps) then go for a 4.4 rom. Preferably stock CM11S.

Okay, thank you for your input. Doesn't really answer what I'm looking for, but I guess I'll keep it in mind.

Update - decided to stray from stock and loaded Sultan's CM12 ROM - currently have 3.5 hours SOT and 20 hours total with 40% left. That's good for me!

[Q] Battery life on jellybean cyanogenmod

I have a Nexus S with a jellybean stock ROM. Batterylife is currently very poor. I only can do like 5-6 hours on one charge. When you google on battery life Nexus S you see that many people have this problem as well.
I was wondering if I root the phone and install Cyanogenmod if battery life should be better. Any comments?
It depends on how do you use your phone and on your battery's state.
With cyanogen (CM stock kernel) I do 2-2.30 of screen usage, 30-60 minutes of calls, 30-40 minutes of navigation and minimum 30-40 whatsapp messages ( I have disabled all syncronization services except those fo Google)
Well, I have a ns4g and I would say it depends on your usage. I'm getting about 2.5 hours of screen time. If I disable sync & data and such it idles pretty well but I also have 3 accounts that I sync. JB is definitely worse than ICS, where I didn't really need to care that I own 3 chargers and 2 spare batteries.

How long have you used the phone? If its more than 1 year and a half (like me), I just did something that gave me a better battery life.
wait for it..
I bought a new battery. no kidding. I got 13 hours battery life with 2 hours of screen on time. All Stock, like you

[Q] Bad battery life- help please?

Hi there,
I bought my one plus a month ago, and am getting around 3.5 screen time.
It is disappointing as I see screenshots of people with one plus who are getting 6 -10 hours screen time.
I am on battery saver mode, not using music, whatsApp, wase games or facebook, just a little bit email and browsing.
At night it is not going down a lot, but when I start using the phone, it goes down quite quickly.
(1 percent every 2 minutes, sometimes every minute). It seems to get worse every day.
If I start using GPS or video or music, my battery will be finished by noon.
I replaced the battery, and it is the same.
Attached three screenshots. (Including the night)
Help please?
Thank you!
I share you the same feeling when I see others having impressive battery performance specially screen-on time.
I have exactly the same drain behavior of yours, when my phone in deep sleep its sleep like a baby. but when I wake it its become beast awakening.
I run 3g when I am out and wi-fi at home, also running regular apps, whatsapp,snapchat,2emails,1gmail,instagram,web browsing, auto brightness, greenify. I checked with BBS and WLD but no culprit. I am on stock rom with root for the apps, no system tuning.
So you can see my setup is like most of regular users will do but noticeable difference in term of battery performance. I have no clue
Your battery life is fine, better mine
Who has a lot of SOT usually doesn't turn off/on the screen that much. The secret to achieve a lot of SOT is making long session on the screen (and having few apps, like you). So no worries I'm at 64% now with 1 hour of SOT, but I flash updates (CM 12) everyday and wake up the phone only when I need it, with 1-2 minutes sessions.

That isn't really true, I have over 100 apps installed and I turn my screen off whenever I'm not actually using it. I'm a heavy user. I get roughly six hours of screen on time.

Hi,
Well, at least I am not the only one....
The problem is that it is getting worse every day and now I lose one percent in a minute!
Horrible! I have to charge it twice a day, and I barely use it.
I have no root, am not using any of the apps, only a little bit of browsing, and checking mails.
If I try to use waze for a half of an hour or a little bit of music (max 30min, I get only about 2 hours screen time!
It seems really poor from a brand new battery.
I have no clue what to do, or what is causing it. If anyone have suggestions, i will be glad to hear!
Are you using the stock OPO rom? because I always had a poor battery life, I had all kind of protections to keep battery life but when I saw, from 100 I had 70, it was awful, one solution I saw was to flash one custom kernel, somehow improved my battery life, but the final solution was to use a custom rom, I have experienced better battery life with 5+ roms rather than the ones with 4.x.x, maybe you should taste another android flavor and check if the battery life increases
How hard was it to change the battery? Was it soldered? Where did you get a replacement ?

Hi,
Thanks for your comment.
Sorry, I don't understand much in roms ... I bought the chinese version color os, and changed it in fast boot to cm11.
My cm version is 11.0-xnph44s , android version-4.4.4
I believe this is app related. Some apps keep phones awake. I encountered this problem with my S3 because I have lots of apps. But since I made sure I only install apps I absolutely need in my oneplus, I get a fantastic battery life.

I don't have so many apps , and I installed all of them. I keep closing apps that are running on the background through the settings.
The funny thing is that it is getting worse every day.
Now my battery is going down one percent in 30-60 seconds!
I don't know what to do anymore.

[Q] Battery life

Recently I've been experiencing absolutely terrible battery life. I lose about 1% every five minutes with the screen on - sometimes even faster - and find myself increasingly unable to last a full (work) day without having to plug in at least once. My current ROM/Kernel are LolliGPE (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716306) and Elite kernel from when I switched from stock Kit Kat back in December. It's worth noting that I haven't gotten around to updating either since their installation. I can't remember how my battery life was back in December nor before Lollipop, but I'm almost certain it was better than it was now.
My questions are:
What ROM/Kernel do you recommend for the best battery life?
Are there any apps I should check for and uninstall that drain battery?
In general, how can I increase my battery life?
Thanks!

1. Rom/kernel combinations in regards to battery life, or pretty much anything, is a completely subjective experience. You're better off trying different combinations for yourself and seeing what works best for you.
2. To see if you have any rogue apps, better battery stats probably does the best job showing what is using your battery. If an app is an issue it'll show you exactly what's causing it.
3. Best way to improve battery life is to monitor your battery stats with a battery monitor and try to control your wakelocks as much as possible. You can Google search exactly what process is keeping your phone awake and fix your problems one by one.
In my opinion, the three biggest things that truly affect battery life is mobile signal connection, Internet connection strength, and Google services such as Google now. Trying a different firmware version could increase your battery life as well as trying different rom/firmware combinations.
I'm running Adrenaline 1.2 with quantum kernel 1.25 on stock 4.4.4 firmware. I'm getting the best battery life I've ever had with that combo. Then again, in bright light where the screen has to run at full brightness and with a less than stellar signal, it will still eat through power pretty quickly. It's just the nature of the beast.
Odd I am stock non-root and see the best battery I have ever had with Android

After experiencing the same problem as yours with the two mentioned kernels, i seek for solution and found one. backup all my contacts, sms, call log, bookmarks, apps then i did a clean install of fluent rom based on sprint port cos i love lollipop and the two devices are similar in many ways. Surprisingly i get 6hours of usage with just 20% gone and at least about 3 -4 h screen on at the same time. so my advice is to try clean install.

Here are Buckmarble's own recommended settings with the Elite Kernel:
Governor: ragingmolasses
Ioscehd: fiops
Read ahead: 1024
UV: -24 across the board
2265 max 300 min
I use Trickster Mod to set these. I have heard that the frequencies don't stick, but I haven't bothered to check because battery life (running Fluent ROM 2.0) is stellar. I put my M8 on extreme powersave yesterday when it was at 100% because I'm testing a different handset and when I returned to the M8 late yesterday evening it was "all the way" down to 95%.

Battery

I could never pump out more than 5h SoT on my opo. Right now I'm getting around 3h before I need to charge it . I'm on stock Cyanogen on 12. I've tried exodus etc and it's all the same :/ My usage isn't even that heavy, I don't play any games at all so I'm sure this is either a rom issue or faulty hardware issue not sure. Is there any setting/rom you guys recommend ? I was thinking about going back to Kitkat but which version has the best battery life ? Thanks and I appreciate any help whatsoever
PS: I disabled the Google services battery drain.
Bump
hello dev
i advice you of using this rom
resurrection remix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-resurrection-remix-lp-5-2-0-t2971715
at the moment i'm using it and it's perfect not a single problem mem leak or battery
:good:
Exodus should give you a hell of a battery life. I have heard nothing but good stuff about that ROM. I myself have not used it yet, but I'm planning to.
I get between 4,5 - 6 hours SOT with AK kernel and v1.9 of real_pac's synapse settings. I also use greenify.
Try rooting your phone and add these additional tweaks, your battery life should be much better!
I am rooted and everything. I was on exodus but it was as good as cm12 nightlies :/ Resurrection I have tried too and i only got 3h SoT I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong unfortunately . I'll try to use greenify and I'll report back
I feel you, never got more than around 3 hours of SOT. Brightness is always below 50 percent, I turn off gps when I dont use it, 3G/wifi all day long. Im running exodus as some people said it had amazing battery life, but don't really see a difference. I am rooted with he paid version of greenify + the paid version of amplify, and the power nap xposed module aswell as privacy guard on google play services. Yet I never ever even get close to the 4-9 hours SOT which some people seem to get. I really don't understand it either..
what's the awake time on your Android System or Android OS? I think I'm in the same boat, flashed BlissPop and RenderUber and left it idle with no additional settings or apps installed, then come back to it and find a good chunk of battery life gone. Both roms had Android System using 1hr of awake time.
Then I installed BBS on both roms, found nothing. Google Play Services wake up permission is disabled in Privacy Blocker, haven't installed Greenify or Servicely yet but just wondering why on stock settings there'd be such a heavy drain.
Update:
Just found something interesting. The battery drain now is just pathetic. Powered up my phone, left it idle for 30 seconds and reboot. Bam, 1% of battery life gone. Repeated this 5 times in a row, every time the phone reboots, 1% of battery will drop. It doesn't drop right after, it sometimes drop after the phone idles for about 1~2 minute but that's just insane.

This is completely normal, the boot process is very intensive and consumes more battery than if your phone was just sitting idle, or even being used normally.

For those of you desiring a phone with +6h SoT. Revert back to cm11s and be happy with your SoT. I did two days ago and I have no regrets. Running amplify with greenify simultaneously and I'm getting around 7h SoT.

[Q] ROM + Kernel for Best Battery Life?

Hey I'm looking for the closest to stock ROM with the best battery life. Im not sure if i should stay stock and rooted (6.0.1) and go with franco kernel or switch to CM 13 (CAF?)...or something else even.
Id say my usage is about average, minimal usage while working, probably less than an hour talk time per day. Maybe 1-2 hours of screen on using various apps (browser, light games, news apps). Generally i make it through a day with about 20-25% left before i goto bed and plug it in to charge every night.
However when i do make more use of it the battery seems to deplete pretty fast. Ideally i would just like better battery life, its the primary reason i havent upgraded the phone yet. I dont need a faster phone, i need one that gets significantly better battery life.
Any recommendations would be great. Thanks

Your mileage will vary greatly depending on usage and what apps you use.
I have personally found that a good kernel is the key to good battery life. I'm a fan of Cataclysm and ElementalX personally.
Best battery life is with stock rom + stock kernel. Before i used custom kernels, but over a week now i have used stock rom with stock kernel and i must say that i get better battery life than before with customs. IMO.
