Why isn't there OREO? - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Good day all,
Thank you for reading my question.
My previous phone was a Nexus 6. On that phone I have OREO. There are multiple devs baking these ROMs.
When I ordered my U11, I searched on XDA for an OREO ROM, but couldn't find any.
Why is this?
Thank you in advance!

Because HTC Sense is not AOSP?
It takes time for HTC to adapt the changes they make to the framework on a new Android Release.
The testers have an oreo build for a few months now..and i is currently going into the RC phase.
It won't take that long anymore.

Thank you for the answer.
I understand that Sense isn't available for OREO.
But, do we need Sense? Is Sense needed for a ROM in our U11? Why isn't there a Dev making an AOSP version for the U11?
Personally, I'm not waiting on Sense or other add-ons. I would be very happy with just an AOSP version
I just dropped the questions out of interest.

There is one AOSP rom available for the U11 for nougat. But even that is still in alpha.
AOSP roms on HTC devices often lack on proper camera support and device specific functions like Edge Sense or Motion Gesture etc won't work...and there are always other little and sometimes bigger things not working here and there.

Don't forget, depending on where in the world you are, it's not just HTC that needs to tweak oreo for the u11. Carriers also need to do some tweaks sometimes (Sprint for example), that ads a large delay because carriers are slow as heck in getting it done.

I understand you OP, i've had a Nexus 5X for two years and already had Android 8 since the beginning of the summer (beta program) and already had 8.1 for a while.
When i switched for the U11 i was kinda surprised it was running 7.1.1 but from what i've heard the OTA is coming Q4 so we'll get it in a few days i guess
When i had the One M8 i loved my AOSP rom but as it's been said, that squeeze thing couldn't work and a few more things probably, i guess we're stuck with Sense, i'm glad it's a good UI not like Samsung's or LG's

ADW2 seems to work well on my U11 though, at least it gives some tweaks that Sense doesen't.

If it is anything like last year with the m9 the update will be just before xmas for dev and end of feb for wwe with major carriers following in march through april.

FWIW, the OREO update came up on my unlocked HTC U11 on 11/29/17. Three things I've noticed since HTC adapted OREO's personalization features to HTC Sense:
1) You cannot change the shape of the icons
2) You cannot change the color of the notification dots
3) All icons downloaded from HTC Themes get reshaped into a cushion silhouette
But all in all, these personalization limits are nothing to get worried about. I'm pleased with the smooth functionality overall.

The themed icons get framed in a cushion-shaped silhouette. I tried the Marbles, Los Angeles and Dodge Charger themes. All got reshaped.

Here are the Marbles and Dodge Charger themes on OREO. The icons are framed in a cushion silhouette:

Does anyone else...

...want Sense 3.6 to be the final Sense version that we get for the Sensation? I mean, I love it. It's great. Obviously a more polished version makes sense, however, I think this sense version is pretty great. (I've had tons of Sense phones and have used many roms.) Sense 4.0 looks so... Blah... to me. That plain grey, I like it on AOSP and in the menus on Sense 3.6... but for it to be the launcher bar on the bottom... I dunno. I feel like they are doing away with the glassy gloss of Sense that made me love it.
Anyone else agree?
Yes, I would love to see sense die, but it seems to be popular enough to some that it keeps HTC making it. These custom skins also give a layer of distinction between manufacturers. I know my next phone will be a Nexus phone or a phone that active and successful AOSP based roms. I don't like how HTC doesn't open up the source for the sensation making it harder for devs to cook up fully functional roms.

They do open the kernel source up, but IIRC it's only after a phone or update with that version of the kernel is shipped this occurs.
So my guess is once they push out the ICS update they will make the kernel source available here: http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads

Don't get me wrong, I love Sense. However, I don't like the direction they are going with Sense 4.0. I would like the new landscape rosie and lockscreen, other than that... Sense 3.6 is the way I like my Sensation.
Μe too,I think now they are making it too grey ang ugly for me.sense 3.6 has that touch polish you can't see elsewhere.

I think 3.6 is kinda ugly. Those grays are very real in Sense 3.6 but they have a bluish tint to them. I just wish the current releases weren't so laggy. Sure, they're stable and the lag is tolerable, but nothing beats AOSP 4.0
Personally I can't stand sense, but thats just a personal preference. I didn't realize how much I disliked it until I received a sense device. I used to think it was just a skin and a different launcher would fix it.
It would be great if HTC offered factory baked AOSP roms as an option. So those who want a regular android experience will continue to buy HTC phones and can do so without voiding their warranty. I get why people like sense, even more when you take it back to windows mobile 6.x (touchflo), but as long as sense is a part of HTC phones for the future, I will no longer buy phones from them. Except for 9 months on blackberry I have had only HTC phones for at least 6 years.

Blue tint is a bug affecting some users. Flash this kernel to fix it: 1.512_GHz_overclocked_kernel_3.0.16-g9788208_by_SebastianFM.zip
You can't really complain about Sense 4.0 when no one has even used it.
All you've seen so far are leaked videos and pictures. It could still change before it's released.

[Q] Questions about Sense and Android 4.0

Hello guys,
I've just recently got the One S on contract from Netcom and coming from a Samsung phone this really has been a new experience for me all together. But I have a problem. The phone itself works flawlessly and lags nothing compared to the HTC One X - but I really, really, really HATE SENSE.
I just can't seem to get used to it and since I've pretty much done custom flashing on my old Galaxy S since the very start, I just can't wait to replace SENSE as soon as possible - in the mean time, would it be possible to just unlock the device and put a STOCK version of ICS on it? Like one for the One S so that I get to keep stuff such as the HTC browser and maybe the custom Alt+Tab kind of thingy they put on?
Personally would like to build my own custom ROM with some mixed ingredienses but I wouldn't know where to start.
Any ideas? Or do I just have to wait and stick to this in the mean time?
As a stop-gap measure, you could install another launcher. I did this on the HTC Sensation for awhile before we started having either the non-sense options or true AOSP builds like we have now. From my limited experience, this is a flagship device and developers and users and documentarians will show up. The Sensation has a pretty rich community of both sense and AOSP builds now. One cautionary note though. On my Sensation running a modified version of CM9 there are things still being fixed. You may find early versions of ICS will have a variety of issues as developers get things solved. Its particularly hard before source gets released though. Its like peddling a bicycle backwards in a dark tunnel when its raining.
As mentioned above, install Nova launcher for now.

Au Contraire!
I am going with the One S because it runs Sense 4 ( best android overlay)
I was going to go with Samsung Galaxy S2 but my friend showed me his, everything about TouchWiz was unappealing from the large text the stale interface.

I guess each one has it's own taste
My gripe with sense is just what you describe as appealing.. the small black text on white background in most of the interface is killing my eye-sight at night. Guess I have been used to the Android 2.3 experience for too long and as much as Sense 4 works wonders - it just not my cup of tea. This could of course be fixed if there was a "black" skin that could be applied. Preferably with as little bright colors as possible (I know, may sound boring but will eventually save a few hours of battery in the long run due to the AMOLED display running "less hot" )
I'm in the same situation as the OP, really enjoyed ICS on my Desire until the display broke (got slammed display first into table... IKEA > HTC)
Anyways here's hoping that I understand these nuggets correctly: "MoDaCo Custom ROMs are based on official ROMs - either shipping or leaked."
"Stock style and Vanilla (ICS) style prebakes will be available as the ROM takes shape."
Source: first post in [ROM] 11 Apr - MoDaCo Custom ROM for the HTC One S - Sense and Vanilla styles in the One S Development forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592126
So hopefully Paulobrien just removes Sense etc from an official ROM. Not sure whats up with the cooking lingo though, maybe there is a dev-chef-lingo dictionary somewhere on XDA!
Also I second your request for where to start learning to build your own ROM! Should post a Q in the noob-friendly thread here.

Perhaps you are right
Looking at sense 3.0 interface , the black blackground is weird, sense 4 with white background for settings seems much more natural. I have spent quite some time around my friends who have EVO 3D and Sensation, and I have to admit I will miss the eye catching animations and the easy access carousel function. Of course this is will be my first HTC phone so I can see how people hate the white look of settings. Coming from an iPhone with white settings too, it will be a similar transition for me. Sense just seems to have so much depth and much to explore compared to other Android Overlays. Having ICS along with it just makes the experience much smoother and sweeter.(Pun partially intended )
So... can anybody tell me if the Stock ROMs that have been cooked for the One S recently work good enough to run for production (i.e. HTC camera, launcher, weather widget)
I really would like to feel that AOSP experience again just like on my old Galaxy S. But I don't want to loose any functionality

MIUI to ONE XL coming soon!

Over at the MIUI site, there some new about MIUI ROM being created for the HTC ONE X being in beta right now. Additionally they talk about how one of their developers is getting the HTC ONE XL from AT&T and will be changing the beta for the ONE X to work for the XL as well. Just though I should share these awesome news
thats great but doesnt miui basically emulate ios
Not at all. The stock miui theme looks a little like iOS but the miui theme engine can make your phone look like anything you want

it's basically the best of both worlds.
BUT. It's also WILDLY themeable and that's the reason I like it so much.
OMGOMGOMGOMG this makes me that much more excited to get my phone. lol. MIUI has been and most likely will always be my favorite rom basically ever, aside from AOSP. I like to use both on occasion.
I don't know why anyone would want to replace the One X's stock interface with the MIUI one. Sure, past Sense versions have been bloated, and MIUI has been a great (in some ways) replacement. Quick, pretty, functional. But I haven't had a moment's lag on my One XL, so I don't need anything quicker/more responsive. Any increase in responsiveness would be moot. And (IMHO), MIUI doesn't look as good as Sense 4. Lastly, you're actually going to lose functionality by running MIUI. I can almost guarantee you'll lose many great camera features, such as the awesome burst mode and simultaneous video/photo taking. HDR likely won't translate over either.
On another point, someone mentioned once (can't remember who, but I think it was a Cyanogen dev) that the MIUI team doesn't pay as much attention to security holes as they should, instead focussing on function and UI bugs.
Just my two cents!
Miui would be awesome and I agree the theme aspect of it is just awesome and given I'm a theme addict it would be ideal for me. This is exciting news indeed.

whaaaaaaaaaaat?! this is very unexpected, but great, news!
i'm a lover of MIUI. they're just now getting stable-ish releases on the GNex but not a dialy driver imo. hope i hang on to the HOX long enough to see a stable one.
If I could just find a rom or something similar to what I have now on my cappy that would be great. And the only two main things I like is how it puts my weather forecast in the notification pull down bar and it also shows weather and upcoming calendar events on the lockscreen.
I'll be installing the AT&T One X beta as soon as I see it. MIUI's so freaking awesome, I love how each part of the phone (lock screen, task bar, UI etc) can be skinned on it's own. People who think MIUI's just a wanna be iOS probably haven't dug into it. I initially installed it because I was an iOS fan with an Android phone. But as I got into the theming I was just blown away.
OMG! I need this!
I used MIUI on my Evo 4G for well over a year, my fav ROM ever. I cant wait if this is true.
Meanwhile, you can use the MIUI home launcher

Also MIUI has updated the desktop/icons with 720p HD support,
MiHOME doesn't work well with out device. It's buggy and laggy. One of the devs from MIUI.us said he could bring the ROM to our phone but he needs the phone! I cant just send my phone across the country, lol.
I can not wait for miui

Any chance we'll see more LG Stock modified ROM's?

I've been running AOSP ROM's for years now, and have come to be kinda.... bored with them. They all generally have the exact same features, look very much alike. I found myself really liking the LG skin. The launcher and icons are sharp looking, and I like the geometric sharpness of the stock icons (if that makes sense).
I already have g3 Tweaksbox installed, as well as a few other xposed mods, but I was curious if anyone was working on a ROM with stuff like that baked right in it. When I had my S3 there were a ton of touchwiz ROM's with a lot of that baked in and they seemed to work better than just having an xposed mod do the work.
Hopefully when lg releases lollipop!
I'm getting this phone today after being with iphone for 2 years and I am amazed to see the lack of development with it being such a kick ass phone. I came from the HTC Evo 3D era where you had hundreds of roms/customizations to choose from. This phone has been out for about 6 months and there is less than 10 roms available with a lot of them dropped and/or locked.

I didn't have that phone, but a quick google search leads me to believe that while the phone was released in June of 2011, it wasn't unlocked until November of 2011. So I bet there was little to no ROM support during the first 6 months of that phone's life either. Funny how our memory works.......
But you have three choices.....
1) Learn Android and become a developer yourself. That would be great because you would be contributing to the community instead of just taking from it.....
2) Get another phone that has a larger developer community already.....
3) Shut up and be patient. Complaining about the lack of developer support is just rude and unhelpful.......

YES!!! If the person complaining had bothered to read through, they would have seen that the phone has only recently been able to have the bootloader bypassed. Obviously the 2 years they have been away from the android world has dulled the senses and understanding of how things work.
For the timeframe, there is lots of development going on. I personally am enjoying the stock rom having come from a Sammy phone and I find the stock LG experience currently enjoyable (after rooting and removing bloat of course). I have no issues waiting on development to progress, but I will keep watching and reading.

But, you have to remember that back in those days a lot of features that were offered in those custom ROMs have now made it to AOSP... thus eliminating the desire for custom variations.
An installation of pure Android 5.0 is extremely feature filled and very fast. I'd say the real lack is the camera (still!!!), but it's not too terribly bad.

You're right. Actually, the reason I was saying there was a lack of development is because I was only looking in the At&t section. Back in the Evo 3D days, there was only one development section. Now they have split it up into the different carriers and android or original. Is the problem with the camera you are talking about through custom or stock roms? I took a picture today with the G3 and it looks beautiful compared to my crappy Iphone 5. Which ROM is the most complete up until now?

I'm pretty sure he's referring to AOSP based roms camera apps. You see, there isn't yet a way to bring the full potential of our G3's camera to an AOSP based rom. If you want superb camera quality like the G3 can deliver, stick to LG stock based ROMS.
As for a "more complete" rom until now, it's a bit more complex to answer. Many custom roms offer great features, but if you're looking for stability and getting the best out of your G3's camera or features, I would stay with a stock based ROM like Cloudy's. Check LG G3 Android Dev forums for that one. As for smoothness and latest features on Android, a Lollipop AOSP based custom rom would be cool.

I understand where you are coming from now. There are several reasons why the threads are differentiated by carrier and international models. One is due to hardware and drivers. Others include such things as carrier specific mods. By separating, it lessens the potential for bricking phones and various other issues. I'm sure there is much more.
AOSP ROMs have never delivered the camera performance I want so I stick to molded stock.

Is Losing Security Updates Concerning?

I'm on a GS8+ and while I'd rather be on a Pixel or iPhone I honestly have no real complaints about the phone now with One UI (which is fantastic BTW) The only reason I'm anxious to upgrade is bc I'm not sure with my US unlocked model I'll continue to get any security updates past my April patch. I'd love some expert opinions on the real danger if I don't upgrade any time soon. The phone is great, I'd say fully optimized, and 2 years later may actually be better than it was new. I just don't like running hardware that doesn't continue to have security support. With the way Play runs now with added security layers and continued app and components being updated through the Play Store, do I have anything to really be concerned about????

Yeah, it's by far the best version I've ever seen that's not pure Android, in some ways I like it more bc of the focus on one handed usage especially on large screens it doesn't force you to stretch across the entire display. I also like the gestures way better than the current Pixel version, and based on what I've heard about Qs current beta I don't know if that's going to change.
