Don't Need a Razer Phone, we got Chroma with Oreo - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi guys, yesterday Razer announced their phone, but a Razer fan will be disappointed... because the phone doesn't have any Chroma code.
With Oreo beta, Samsung update their edge lightning and we've got some pretty awesome new edge lightning, and a "chroma" edge lightning
Check it out here in the video :
As you can see the UI seems to be more fluid, but animations remain the same (be aware, here, all animation are scale at x0,5 that's why it seems to be more faster than usual)

Omg. Love the new edge lightning... looking forward

S7 edge Android 7.0 Nougat: Performance review

Hi, I was wondering about how people are experiencing the performance with Nougat update. Based on my experience on S7edge & S7 (yes I have both ), the grace UX feels very smooth. Transitions / Animations are super smooth. Flipping the screen or scrolling has also been much smoother. One thing I noticed that the phone screen resolution on both my devices default to FHD (1080P) instead of WQHD (2K) with the official (I'm not a beta tester) Nougat update. The in game experience seems a bit smoother especially in Asphalt 8 / Extreme, Need for Speed No Limits & Assassin's Creed Identity. Don't need the feel to revert back to QHD as with Video enhancing feature turned on, the Video playback looks crisp & clear. Don't notice any big difference.
Feel free to share your Nougat specific performance experience.

From S7 edge to Mate 9??

Hello.
So i have a chance to trade my used s7 edge for a used mate 9. I'm a bit bored with my s7 edge and looking for a new experience.
Will I regret it?? Anyone did this move?! Any recommendations?! Real life experiences?!
Thx.
I'm coming from S7, so I can share a bit of experience. Battery life not much an improvement ~4-6 hours SOT, depending on your usage scenario, games and videos tend to suck more battery than other phones (this is specific to Kirin SOC's). Speed and smoothness are still the same since the beginning , maybe improved through updates, it's not stellar but still one of the bests, in top 5 for speed for sure. Definitely better than S7 for speed matters. Dual camera is a nice feature to have, overall camera is good, but not execellent (much better than Oneplus 3T, which I've experienced). Coming from an S7 the low light will disappoint you a little particularly on moving subjects. One thing that should make you think twice is that updates come-out very slow on Huawei. Other than that everything is fine, maybe less errors and glitches that I've experienced on Samsung and the big screen experience is not matched by any other phone.

Samsung Experience 8.1 vs 8.5

For those that don't know, currently the note 8 has the Samsung experience 8.5 and the two S8 variants have the experience 8.1.
Samsung experience 8.5 is superior to 8.1 because 8.5 comes with the one thing most touchwiz users have been wanting since the s3 days. 8.5 gets rid of that "Touchwiz" Lag, that most people associate with Touchwiz.
They managed to remove most of the frame drops that plague touchwiz users when opening apps, scrolling etc.
Will the S7 recieve Samsung experience 8.5? I ordered a Oneplus 5 recently, and i'm thinking of returning it if the S7 recieves the update that puts it in line with most stock android flagships in terms of fluidity and speed.
If you guys don't know what i'm talking about have a look at this video. You can clearly see how optimised the latest version of Samsung experience is.
https://youtu.be/hLSH74_FSNo?t=80
This video here also shows the Note 8 comfortably beating the S8 in speed tests. Even though they both have the same hardware.

Yes! But we have to wait till Android 8.0 update since S7 is not getting 7.1

from an s7 to ?

hi guys so i have had an s7 currently
i always root a phone for no ads youtube websites etc and install nova launcher
i always root also with a stock android rom like i have with my s7 currently
im wondering should i come across to the pixel 2?
i did want a pixel 2 xl but with the screen issues im thinking maybe just the px2 bcos samsung make that screen and lg do the 2 xl.
in the past ive gone
.iphone..n8 ..s4..s5...oneplus2..s7...??
so what do you guys think should i jump ship
and is the 2 xl really that bad with screen issues?
Hi,
I moved from S7(att&t non root) to Pixel 2 (non XL) and here my 2ยข
1. Camera Quality higher than S7, Night shots and Portrait mode really shows you the difference.
2. Faster and smoother than S7 this may due to my S7 is with att&t crap-ware ( I have already disabled most of the apps and installed adhell to get rid of ads in my S7)
3. Google's 3 year software support and dev friendly.
I brought Pixel 2 mostly because of its Camera and I am satisfied.
I moved from an S7 to a Pixel 2 and it's the best decision I made. The camera is great in low light and even better when the lighting is good. The colour reproduction is fantastic in photos and pictures are sharp, clear and vibrant. I always installed Nova Launcher as I did on my S7 but with the Pixel I haven't wanted to. The launcher is very quick and the squeeze function is actually great - I've used assistant more now, than I ever have in the last year and I've only had the phone less than a week.
I have seen a lot of screen burn in issues with the XL but that device was too big for me so I didn't even look at it! The regular Pixel 2 was the right size for me.
Moved from an S7 At&t version that I flashed the unlocked software onto to get rid of the bloat. While that helped the S7 it still had hiccups, slow downs and the dreaded Touch Wiz lag no and then.
With that said the Pixel 2 is almost identical in size with a slightly smaller screen. There is NO COMPARISON on how well the Pixel 2 runs, it's smooth, fingerprint is instant there is such a difference in the overall speed of this phone over the S7. Hardware to software optimization is quite apparent with the Pixel, you will never regret leaving the S7.
I came from an s6 and wow what a difference same screen size but half as thick and so light I love it and everything about it
You guys are making feel really good about choosing the P2 over the S8. My wife and I are coming from the S5, I know it's super old. But I'm feeling really good about the decision to get the P2. I keep saying that I'm not going to worry about Root/Unlocked Boot Loader, but I know about 6 months from now I'll jump in on it. Just hope a lot of Devs get on board with this device.
Former S7 edge owner
I have actually gone from an S7 edge, it was getting noticeably laggy (to me anyway).
With a decent leather flip case (the kind I always put on my phones) size wise it is about the same as the S7 which I found right for my hands and fingers, definitely lighter. The screen is a little smaller due to the bezels but the speakers are far better and it's much snappier. Fingerprint scanner is oceans ahead of the Samsung one.
Software wise I always put Nova on as well and it works as expected, oddly with the squeeze function I find myself actually using the Google assistant and it is pretty useful and versatile.
Bluetooth works well, and battery life is pretty good, better than my S7 but unsure if thats due to the newer battery, fast charge is what I would expect it to be.
I got a 128gb one and its doing well with regards to installed apps and the amount of spotify tunes I tend to load on.
Overall I would say it's a good option to move from an S7 without getting something stupidly large, the reason I didnt go for an XL.

Question S22 Ultra clearly the best phone after OneUI 5 update

Having owned the S22 Ultra since release, it's been a very enjoyable phone, but admittedly there were some stutters and animation glitches on OneUI 4.1. Since OneUI 5, the phone's animations are way faster and smoother, and battery life has improved. I'm not sure, but it looks like they kept more of stock Android as a base and made OneUI a themed overlay. Also, Good Lock has been updated and allows nearly endless customization options. Everything from the launcher, to navigation, to QuickSettings panel, to notifications, to themes, to settings menu and button customization. If you don't like the look of OneUI, you can change it any way you want.
I had previously been on the fence about calling a winner between this and the Pixel 7 Pro because of it's cleaner smoother experience, but OneUI 5 brings that smoothness to the S22 Ultra. Sure, unlocking a bootloader and tinkering with root can be fun but constantly having to undo and redo everything after monthly updates is too much work. Being able to do so much without root is a huge advantage.
The S22 Ultra is the best phone you can get hands down, and I say that after using both the Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
well, seems that you have had a.very nice experience with this update, I got my S22 ultra 908E 2 weeks ago, it came woth android 12 UI 4.1, and was really doubtful to update it to 13, (when released for my device, that is) as I have read some very negative opinions about it, some have neutral ones, your post is the first one that praises the update so enthusiastically
Keep in mind, I'm using the US Snapdragon model. The Exynos models may or may not be performing as well with the update.

I don't think CPU is not the issue on previous version the kernel is.
The S22 Ultra that is distributed in most countries is the snapdargon variant, which is the case in my country, that is why I took interest in your post

You should clear the Android cache in the recovery mode everytime you get a monthly security update or a major Android upgrade. And disabling the RAM Plus feature aswell.

Curious about your thoughts as to how far ahead the overall battery life of the 14 Pro Max is compared to the S22 Ultra and the 7 Pro..
Battery life wise, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the winner. It is very very efficient. At the end of a day, it will still have 50% remaining with moderate usage. The S22 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro both have similar, great battery life for Android, and you're looking at 30-40% at the end of the day with moderate usage. However, charging is very slow on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, slow on the Pixel 7 Pro above 50%, and quite fast on the S22 Ultra.
First time I did not root my phone and I'm quite happy with it. OneUI 5 is also very stable and smooth so far, but I should add that I did not have any issues with v4.1 either.
Two things they should copy from other launchers (i.e. Nova) are the option for padding widgets and also disable the dock completely so that there are different icons on each page.

I think iPhone wins on battery, hands down. I'm a 'much more than moderate' user and it's very rare that I don't have to charge my ultra at some point in the day in order to make it to late evening. I have owned iPhones 12 and 13 pro max and I was rarely, if ever, able to drain the battery fully in a day. I guess it's the way they are designed and operate, one is multi tasking on a platform overlayed on Android on top of someone else's hardware core while the other is fully in-house and mostly single tasking. But I will live with it. I always have a charger nearby and I will put up with the inconvenience of a portable charger because I think Samsung makes fabulous devices and I love the overall experience.

I also want swipe gestures on home screen folders. And compatibility with "regular" launcher icon packs.

Maybe because its so easy to customize and also after updating to a major OS release your seeing problems, I have owned the past 6 flagship unlocked phones from Samsung, never had issues, after every major update about every six months I do a full system restore, and don't use Android backup. It may be excessive but my phones has been trouble free. I test a lot of apps for music, video and make a lot of folders and files so my phone gets very used. I'm sure some have legitimate software issues but I've seen that one setting can make or break the user experience.

+1 for swipe gestures on folders.
Regular icon packs can be integrated in OneUI now in Theme Park. It's just the other way around, you have open Theme Park first and then select one of the listed, installed icon packs using the icon on the top.

I mean "regular" icon pack from the Play Store, not the ones mades specifically for OneUI in the Galaxy Store. What you say does seem to work. I installed Whicons from the Play Store, which is a huge well known icon pack that's been around a long time and is compatible with a ton of launchers that use "standard" icon packs. I cannot find any way for Theme Park to see it. If you could point me at some clear instructions to make this happen, I'd really appreciate it.
Gee, I feel quite silly now. I finally found it. On the one hand, thank you! I am really pleased that this feature is in OneUI, but since it is rather hidden, here are the steps for anyone else who happens across this:
Open Theme Park
On the row of icons along the bottom tap the one called "Icons".
Tap the "Create New" button.
Look for the blue and white icon at the top that looks like a package with a bow on top if you squint right, and tap it.
Then, save it.
Then, apply it.
More complicated than something like Nova Launcher, but at least it is there!
Edited again to add: The problem with this is that any icon that the icon pack doesn't cover just... doesn't have an icon. Only a blank space. So, instead of what happens in Nova Launcher, where you'd just get the default icon for the app, but in white, you get no icon at all.
So near, but so far. Maybe OneUI 5 will be better.
I don't use OneUI as my launcher and I've noticed a much-improved performance. The S22 Ultra was already a great performer, OneUI 5 made it better.

Nova 8 is the latest, however it's not released on the play store as of yet. It says it's a beta, but honestly it's solid as a rock. Been running it since the summer with no issues at all. It's a massive rebase and redesign, with added features and a slick updated Material design. Check it out here:
