is it better to use a rooted touchwiz based rom on older samsung phones in comparison - Android General

I have a samsung galaxy note 2, I would upgrade to the 4 but I'm a student with basically no spare cash.
When I got it I immediately rooted it to CM13/ Resurrection Remix. I've never had a flagship so I've never experience amazing performance. When rooted I noticed it occasionally heats up, get's slow etc.
So I started wondering should I just go back to the stock rom or a touchwiz based rom. I normally used NOVA launcher anyway, the only thing that would change is the OS .

In my opinion I would not upgrade old Android phones (Like a phone at Jellybean) and try and upgrade to something like Marshmallow.
But I could be wrong, maybe it could be something with the battery but I am not sure.
Take a look at your system usage and see from there. Is your phone slow? Does your phone ever crash (Apps failing to respond?).

I too was thinking that it could be the battery. I'm considering ordering a new one of Ebay.
And yes my phone occasionally crashes, sometimes it will work perfectly sometimes it will be slow as hell.
I just checked my RAM and I was using 1.5/1.7GB .

Underwhelmed

Am I the only one here that is underwhelmed by this phone?
I received my 64GB version today, did the rooting/recovery stuff, installed some apps (mostly news) and find the phone slow, with shocking battery drain, poor network signal and a purplish hew on display ( gets better if brightness turned up)
It's on stock with 44s Cyanomod software version.
My comparison is with the my previous phones S3,S4,N4,N5 and HTC One M8.
I'm going to initiate a return.Very disappointed.
Well, I came from, have a G3, which I really like. We've gotten 3 OPO's. Battery lasts for several days with moderate use, heavy use for my daughters phone, very nice. We've made no special 'battery setup' to have this several days battery life.
In general, I find the quickness on par with the G3. The phone works well, overall we are pretty happy with them, and two of the three of us mess about with the rooted side of 44s to experimental L ROMS. A few of the L ROMS, though notably more snappy, still are rough, so unless I don't have anything to do, I try and stay away from them... until the oem version comes out.
Display is great and uniform. Networks work just like my G3, consistency and strength, the data/phone side providing I have the correct APN.
I was just checking the OP against my G3 yesterday, after the G3 having sat for a month, being un-touched. My sense of the two remains the same. The G3 is a bit more polished, but the OPO allows for getting into the dirt and playing with it.
Sounds like your initial experience has been unsatisfactory, and the initial 'presentation' of a thing can sure put a cloud over it. Just like meeting a person for the first time, first impressions can make or break it.
Good luck.

I hope this is a hardware problem with your phone, and a fluke. I've just ordered today and hope it is better than my Moto X(2).

Hopefully for you this is a hardware issue.
I've initiated a return and since this will take some time I've decided to install other ROM's in case it was a ROM issue.
Just installed the Mahdi ROM but Titianium backup restore doesn't want to work.
Time for another ROM.
Will update if another ROM solves the issues I've had.
No luck with this phone.
Installed mahdi, Stock 4.4.4, Pan Android and cDroid.
Another strange issue that I've had with all ROMs is Textsecure and Viber apps not working. I have never had issues with these apps.
Started the RMA.
I'll go back to the N5 and live it's poor battery & only 32GB storage.

I had a problem with TB on Mahdi as well. It would crash spontaneously. I wiped out TB and installed fresh. IIRC it was something like that that cleared up the issues. If I remember I'll let you know.
Agree 100% op. Got mine a few weeks ago from craigslist. Very laggy phone on all ROMs I've tried. Battery life isn't anything to brag about either. Only reason I'm keeping it is because the lollipop ROMs seem good soo far. Definitly not a flagship killer phone though.
You guys probably got bad hardware. I am on the 2nd OPO (broke first by accident), both have been really good. Exactly the same setup on OPO and N5, OPO battery lasts twice as long and there are no lags of any kinds. I actually sold the N5 on Ebay today and bought a 16gb OPO, so I am going to have two

Why does my Z3 have such poor performance

I came from using an iPhone. The things I loved about iOS were the smoothness of the operating system (especially the animations and scrolling in apps) and the nice slection of apps that is available. Now I was up for a new phone last month and after serieusly considering the new iPhone 6 I decided to give Android another go. I really liked what google had done with android 5 and the new apps coming out were much more to my taste. I tried several phones in shops and my wife's One plus One. To my surprise the one plus was very smooth most of the time. Scrolling was finally almost without lag and it felt nice enough to use.
Now I decided to go for the Z3 as I loved the phone itself. As it has the same insides as the oneplus I assumed it would be just as smooth. It isn't. Its a lot more laggy and that is especially the case when scrolling in various twitter and rss apps. I annoys me to the point where I read want to ditch the phone.
I have tried several factory resets and even flashed the stock firmware (old and new) via flash tool. Whatever I do it doesn't seem to help. Why is the one plus (and the nexus 9) so much smoother than my Z3 when I use them side by side. Is there something I could try to improve this? Maybe performance will improve when we finally get Lollipop? I am at a loss.
Just a thought, but under Settings > Power Management > STAMINA mode, do you have Extended usage turned on?

I have. But I only when have stamina mode turned on when I don't use the phone for long periods. Otherwise it is turned of.
Try turning it off and reboot your device. Normally the Z3 is working buttery smooth without any lag or stuttering. When activating extended usage the phone should display a message advising you to keep the setting turned off if it causes too much performance issues. In my experience, once you turn extended usage on, it kind of remains active in the background until you actually reboot the phone, even if you turn the setting off. I also find that the performance loss coming with the extended usage setting is out of all proportion to its power saving abilities.
Tried but that has no effect. Still way less smooth scrolling through fenix timeline than scrolling through exact same timeline on my wife's one plus. Really strange. Games are comparable but scrolling in all apps is just poor.
what firmware are you using? before the latest update mine was a bit laggy, but even with extended stamina mode enabled all the time now, phone is super quick.

Tried reflashing it twice with full factory reset and still no improvement. I will say it is slightly less laggy though than it was on the previous firmware. Maybe its just i am used to IOS. But what bothers me is that my wife's Oneplus is much smoother while that has the same hardware,.

what apps do you have installed? my z3 next to other peoples iphone 6's and s5 etc, seems lightning quick, again with extended stamina enabled. maybe you have a rogue app or an app running in the background killing your resources?
No looked into that. That's not the problem.
Maybe the title of the thread is misleading. I agree the Z3 is snappier than an iPhone. That's pure speed though. What I am talking about is smoothness. Particularly when scrolling. That's when the laggyness is most noticeable

i never really thought about it before, but maybe because i am using apex launcher? are you able to try another launcher, do you get the same thing?
do you have any dev options enabled?
I use Nova Launcher. The launcher is fine. Its scrolling inside apps that is the main problem. And occasionally elsewhere in the os but going through homescreens is smooth

ok so its the apps that cause the problem then. how about the dev menu, do you have any options in there enabled? if so which ones.
Only Verify apps over USB and USB debugging.
hmm, not sure what else to suggest looking at. maybe someone else will have an idea? something is clearly not quite right though. have you tried using cpuz to see what your cpu is doing? do you get fullspeed on the cpu?

Just checked. It seems like the CPU is working fine though there are a lot of spikes when I only have cpuz open.
I think I will probably just wait and see what lollipop has to offer in a month or so and if it doesn't improve I'll likely switch back to an iPhone. Maybe my priorities are just in the wrong place for android.
Have u tried using any other Z3's as a point of reference? The comparisons that I've seen btwn the OnePlus & the Z3 seem to state near identical performance re: ui smoothness & stutter free scrolling, etc.
I, for one, have no such issues with my Z3 although I may not be comparing the same apps with which u speak of? I'm using Nova Launcher & the lollipop theme.

Unfortunately I have no way of comparing another Z3. All the apps that I use are not installed on the demo models in shops. I have been using my wife's oneplus now for 24 hours and the difference is immense. I would say it is almost completely lag free. A lot nicer to use. Such a disappointment for me as I really wanted to like the Sony more than I do. I now also notice that I very much dislike the glass back.

First thing
Please don't compare iOS to Android..they are both very much different platform and iOS manages memory very much efficiently and also their hardware platform is completely different from other companies.
Now About OnePlus > it uses CyanogenMod which is modded to work more efficiently than pure android or any other skinned android like SenseUI, XperiaUI or TouchWizUI.
Nexus 6 uses pure android which is way more light then other UI so you got the answer maybe why our Z3 lags...but i dont mind a little lag here and there..its quite normal its a phone after all..
My mom has the iPhone 6, I can't say its any better than my Z3 in function but the Z3 has a much much better battery life and is as smooth as the iPhone 6. Maybe you have an errant app/s, try a factory reset is nothing works. Most people who switch to Android from iPhone seem to prefer HTC Sense UI, my dad bought the M8 for that very reason. The Z3 is pretty close to stock and almost as good as Sense in my opinion and is stutter free in use.
I don't know about CM being more efficient because some review sites like GSMArena found the colors OS version of the Oppo phone to be better performing and having slightly better battery wise. CM is less cluttered compared to OEM garbage and has more useful options though.

[Q] How many Skyrocket users are now in 2015?

I'm still in love with Skyrocket, but some developers and mantainers stop making new buils because feels like there are just a few Skyrocket users out there.
I think it's just because some of us are waiting for a more stable Lollipop release and better compatibility of xposed. But believe me, Skyrocket only needs a little push, and this is the time; I found a repartition thread for Hercules and same method works for Skyrocket, it means less space limitations and more juice to pull out of Skyrocket.
What do you guys think?
I still have the phone but even with a new battery I don't get much life out of it. Especially compared to my HTC One M7. I still have a real fondness for the Skyrocket. I'm running lollipop on it via the Candy ROM and it runs pretty good . In fact I think it runs much better than it ever did compared to when I had it on stock touchwiz.
I see by looking at file host download counts that over 400 downloads for Lollipop.
So a lot still using,I know some may be repeat downloads where they have gotten bad dl's,but still plenty. Just don't know how many developer's are still rocking the skyrocket.
Hope they keep up the builds there doing now . Lollipop is making my SR faster and longer life on battery.
Just bought one to use as a media streamer for summer.
Mine still get use as Ambio / music players. They are incredible devices, and amazingly enough, still reasonable performers. Not flag-ship worthy anymore, but remarkably close to the middle of the pack for mid-grade devices, and much faster than the low-end crap.
If Samsung hadn't gone nuts on locking (and encrypting) the bootloader for AT&T models, I'd still buy their hardware.
yap my beloved skyrocket is still with me as my daily drive
starting to have some problems with it but not something that a 15$ part cant fix
My husband bought me the LG Optimus G (AT&T) as a gift. Ended up returning it.
I like both versions of the S2 (i727 & i777). My husband used the i727 before upgrading. Mine was the i777.
Parts are cheap and phone is way easy to repair. At the moment I am using the i727 because the i777 needs fixed.
I don't need all the bells and whistles of a fancy phone. I have an S5 but its used by the kids.
Still have my skyrocket. I'm running cm11 but really want a stable lollipop rom. But my phone is about dead. it is so slow and laggy i cant figure out how to fix it. ive switched roms and it still remains frustrating slow.
I got my i727 back in 2012, and it's a great phone. My problem is finding a stable AND secure rom (meaning, consistent updates). My favorite for a while was Slim Roms' "Slim Kat"... but they haven't updated it in over a year I believe. I did find a way to increase app space by partitioning using a custom PIT file (someone shared how on these forums). I would be happy to hear rom suggestions, as I am using T-Mobile in the US currently.
Skyrocket going strong still, even after 3 years.
I bought my skyrocket 3 years ago and I still use it with Stock AT&T touchwiz ROM. Battery is new and gives me half a day backup. I love it and the old 4.1.2 interface seems refreshing after seeing tons of lollipop phones with similarly decked out homescreens and notification bars. The big font, the big icons and the bright colours on this phone (Especially with the AMOLED screen) still feel awesome.

That sounds nice! What service provider do you use? I am currently using T-Mobile, so I had to use a different radio to get it working better. Do you happen to know what radio that stock rom comes with, and if it might work for T-mobile? My phone is seriously throwing a fit right now so I gotta get a new rom on there soon.
*Edit* I just used Odin to return my i727 to stock AT&T rom (ATT JB 4.1.2 I727UCMC1 ..) which can be found here on Vincom's sticky under "
3: STOCK FIRMWARES: ODIN FLASHABLE - FULL/COMPLETE/ STOCK", and it seems to run fine as I use my T-Mobile sim card! Running very smoothly right now. Before the AT&T stock rom was updated (back when I got my phone in 2012), I do not recall it even using the signal correctly when I inserted the T-Mobile sim card, so I opted to use custom roms with short-term joy and a lot of pain and suffering in the long-run. Will let you guys know updates as I continue to use it, because long term is the real test of how a rom handles!

I'm on Airtel in India. And the stock ROM comes with UCMC1 radio and it works pretty okay. The ROM is solid now that I've used it for 3 weeks now. There was one occurrence where the phone rebooted when the battery was low and when it came back on it had factory reset itself (That was a pain to bring back everything update). Other than that ROM has been solid.
As far as signal and data is considered, what I found out which worked better is when I installed xposed framework and installed a mod called Intelli3G. If I change the network mode to WCDMA via UltraCfg I used to get 1 bar signal. But when I used to switch network mode via Intelli3G I get 2-3 bars. I don't know why it is like that, but it works.
Why would anyone still be using this phone? It was a piece of crap. Literally the worst purchase decision I have made in my entire life. Nothing but problems.

Still using the original battery after three years? My battery life wasn't very good even when new and was awful after like 6 months getting like 1.5 hours screen on time with like 8 or 9 hours off the charger.
I could see it being a little better with custom ROMs since you wouldn't have to deal with the pathetic TouchWiz but not much and I didn't want to void my warranty and insurance by installing custom ROMs. After the first update it was so slow(even after a factory reset) I missed half my calls because the phone was so slow that the call had went to voicemail before it had registered my swipe to answer.
The build quality sucked too. The phone was creaky and had several gaps between parts. The back cover didn't sit flush with the back of the phone even after replacing the back cover which I did 3 or 4 times during the two years I used the phone because of how easily it scratched and worn out.
It also had issues every few months were it would get stuck in boot loops.
After using that piece of crap for two years I vowed to never get another Samsung phone unless serious changes were made by Samsung.

I have two - my wife and I bought them the same day - and the only issue I have had so far is the power button on the black one going out after 2.5 years. (One of the solder techs at my work replaced it for me.) Otherwise, both have been fantastic devices. They don't creak, the backs go on perfectly, and they still function quite well - even if they are fairly slow compared to my M8. Even the TouchWiz poo that shipped on them was functional - I just prefer CM.
I think you got a lemon.
even though i got mine new i also bought 2 used ones for family members, all 3 are still working great

android 11 major battery and performance issues

so i got the phone almost 2 years ago with andoid 9 and it was fast and smooth no overheating and ~5h screen on time and with every update it got slowwr and hotter with worse battery now wirh android 11 i barely get 2.5h screen on time and takes 2h+ to chanrge instead of 1.2hours and it gets hot with more than 3 apps in the backgrounds would a factory reset even change anything or do i not bother and sell it
btw its exynos model runing 2 sims all the time and alwaya updated through ota wirh same apps (tried app optimizer from samsung but same thing)
imho a clean installation by Odin w factory reset could improve your situation

Yes, yes it does.
Scope storage and all kinds of CPU cycle sucking useless Apple like crap. More needed app privileges barred making trusted apps like Karma Firewall next to useless.
My Note 10+ is still running well on Pie.
It has some bad vulnerabilities but in practice I have yet to do a force reload due to malware.
My recommendation is to flash it back to Pie or Q if you liked that. Q is pretty screwed up too.
Google is on a prolonged Vista style losing streak
Trust Google? not... and Google nobody wants a bloody Android Apple.

XtreStoLite 2.2 Android 5.1.1 - do you advice me to update?

Phone (G920F) is getting old now, it's 2022, and I had it as a backup. Last week a new battery arrived and I swapped it so it's nice to see it holds it's charge. I've started to install some apps but noticed a few won't work, infact playstore didn't even show me kiwi browser just an example and YouTube Vanced won't install after 14....something. Question is what is the latest android I can install on this thing? What's the lightest ROM similar to this? And most importantly should I even bother updating or will the same faith happen if I go to say Android 7.0? I'm not sure what to do, I have a working phone but some apps don't support 5.1.1 (it's ok I'm using alternatives). I'm just not knowledable enough to figure all of this on my own.
Plan is to swap the SIM card with a Galaxy S9 almost every day while the S6/S9 is charging, hence the dual phone wield and the recent refresh of the battery.
i still use my old G920f and i start feeling i have to change it and get a new phone
why !!
-batter in 2022 battery with 2550 is not enough at all
-the camera there is now phone has so much batter camera special at night
-Android 7 u will get problems with some apps and even if i use custom rom always there is bugs
if you have money u should upgrade man
