Oreo reviews here please (describe everything, share photos, ask questionsc etc) - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

Let this thread be Oreo review from Us, users. Have a great day and stay united!

I made this because i remember long time ago, when xperia Z was supported, yet, every update killed a battery and performance a little bit... So I want to know how is Oreo acting on XZP before updating.

When the hell can we expect official Marshmallow ?

Am I the only one frustrated ?
I really want and need the performance boost of 6.0 to enjoy fast app lauch and app switching faster browsing etc..
There is a lot of bull **** talk about this beta, let be clear I want no beta cause it is a pain in the ass
to reinstall your phone too many times, and going from beta to official version might is hard too.
From what I have seen in youtube videos Marshmallow seem to work good ?
so why the hell let us wait more ? why endure this pain and suffering more then they need.
There is people who suffer everyday daily for frustrating performance problems of Mate 7.
Huawei released the Beta to public on purpose cause they want to use us all as lab rats.
Push out the official version now, I will not install any beta software.
This is is important cause if Marshmallow get an satisfying performance increase, then
I might skip to buy Mate 8.
Mate 8 was nice but it has some flaws... The black borders around the screen..bugs me a lot..
for instance..much different to the press renders where the screen did go from edge to edge.
what version of lollipop are you on?

I've emailed Huawei about this, seeing as the 'official' versions has been released in Egypt and other parts of Africa.
Long story short, they only said that they are still in the testing phase and cannot give any form of feedback as of this moment.
Cool that they replied and said they are at least testing.
My question in my first post remains. Reading all he'll and problems people seem to have with the installation of marshmallow I am happy I did resist the temptation to install the marshmallow beta.
However it seem the official must be near?
My wisdom is to those who are in the beta program . Does huawei respond to any feedback of bugs or at all or is it a dead projekt? Seem meaningless to have a beta program if they are not working om it..
The beta has dragged out on time a lot and I honestly doubt they will improve much more then the beta.

Huawei is notorious for severely delaying updates, sadly. I wouldn't be surprised if we only see the update in the second half of this year.
To be honest I'm considering getting rid of my Huawei and picking up the Nexus 6P. The only reason I bought the Mate 7 in the first place was because of the fingerprint scanner, and the 6P has it whilst also being pure Android, which is neat. Not knowing that custom ROMs are virtually impossible with this phone has given me severe buyer's remorse.
it is now march where the hell is our marshmallow ? common Huawei..you really dig your reputation grave deeper and deeper
You have already done 95% of the work why not finish the last 5% this is frustrating!!!
I feel that the project is dead... I hope to be wrong
Enviat des del meu HUAWEI MT7-L09 usant Tapatalk
I think the team responsible have their hands full with some higher priority device so they left this 95% beta unfinished, this update is big and it is said to give the same performance boost as the lollipop did.
Millions people are affected.. I am not sure they realize that. And they are too much of ***** to release their update on Ota since they do not want to be responsible

Note 3 N9005 Snapdragon ROM Reviews - Request a ROM

General
Hi to all, I have been using XDA for around a uear now, but I hadn't registered until recently. I wanted to give back to the community in some way but developing ROMs isn't one (I'm more of a web developer). So due to a lack of recent videos of Note 3 ROMs which I have seen on YouTube. I thought that it'd be a good idea to review ROMs based on performance, battery life etc... As I regularly change ROMs looking for key features such as good battery life and good performance all around. (I have been through many ROMs, soft bricks and bootloops).
IMPORTANT
I'd be greatful if you guys requested a ROM for me to review. I dont mind testing kernels with a ROM too
DO NOT GIVE A DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINK! ALWAYS GIVE THE ROM POST LINK (So I can view it and give the necessary credits)
ROMS WILL BE PICKED FROM THIS POST AT RANDOM
The Review Process
I install the ROM:
Over 3-7 days I test the ROM for performance, battery life, overnight battery life, compatibility, looks and maybe some other stuff depending on what you guys ask me.
Other information
When will I start?
The reviewing will begin hopefully on the 14th August because I'm on holiday.
I also dont mind reviewing applications and other stuff for the note 3 and at least for now my videos will have NO ADS, also if enough people are interested I will make a website for it with the written reviews
Thank you for reading this
Hopefully if this works the first review will be of an unofficial CM13 build by someone.
Please do a review on AryaMod Port S7Edge . I have already tried the ROM, it seems really good. Can you also please do a tutorial on how to install the ROM at the beginning of the video, so that if anyone have doubts regarding installation, your video will be helpful.
Thanks

Sure when I get back I will review it and post an install tutorial on it, I'd do one on holiday but I have tried AryaMod a while ago and its a battery killer lol and whilst I'm on holiday battery life is crucial.
Yeah so hopefully I can start the review process on maybe the 13th but it should he finished and uploaded by the 17/18th
Yesterday I used both the brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 with the iris scanner and the Samsung Galaxy S7.
The only ROM that is like the S7 is Fagner Wolfs Darkwolf S7 ROM.
So far I haven't seen any ROMs with the Note 7 UI with its all new settings and notifications which are more like android stock now but somewhat cleaner and copy the default Samsung white background.
If I had my phone with me I would have recorded it and posted it on YouTube. Sadly I didn't
I might review some stuff early
Any updates on the review ?
Nice stuff
I always wanted a ROM with the latest software from the most recent Note (in this case the Note 7) but with everything compatible and what isn't possible (like camera software due to hardware limitations) reverted to the Note 3 version. Like an actual update from the brand or something among those lines. But there's so much roms out there (and fortunately!) and so much confusion in threads (less fortunately but I can't really complain as everything here is made for developers and not for general public) and not so much time on my end that I can't test everything out and find what I like.
Anyways, I'm just here to show my support on your idea, good luck with that

The ROM to choose

Dear Xda.
I've been struggling to choose between ROMAUR, Duality and Existenz N for my xperia XZ.
I deem my performance and battery life most important, I don't really care about customizations.
Which one would you guys recommend for my needs?
Thanks in advance
Cheers,
Cas.
no definitive answer - but some individual thoughts

I can give you no personal recommendation and for me there are is not too much difference between them.
I doubt that you will notice any difference in battery life between them and stock.
Each has vocal fans.
Read the ROM threads to get a feel what might be good/bad about each ROM.
Personally I did not like the tone I read out of the ROMAUR thread.
I do not like the LOUD claims of Duality.
I had Existenz on my phone for several months and found it to be of very good quality and liked the customizations very much.
I dropped it for stock because it got a bit slow (only one great developer) in security updates and I can live without the tweaks.
Switching a ROM with proper backups will not cost you more than 5 hours.

Just like he said. Back up in TWRP so you can always come back to a state that is fine for you. It's super easy to switch RoMs
Then there is not so many to try so make your own mind, this ain't oneplus forum with countless ROM
If your feelling it you can also add CR droid to your list for a touch of AOSP, but like above, read the thread, get a feel and try by yourself.

Comparison of Nougat and Oreo

Hi. I'm using XZ for a couple months with Oreo, everything except battery is fine. I read some stories about Oreo update on XZ and Premium that this update decreased the battery compared to Nougat. What do you think about it? Should i downgrade to Nougat? I'm a simple user that do not care about the Android version much.
What About Lag With Your Phone ?? My XZ Is Lagging Every time i don`t know what can i do ?

On Oreo, only lags while working with many apps (actually not so many but XZ's ram management is extremely bad). Try cleaning cache/data.
I downgraded my XZ (F8332) two or three days ago to Android 7.0 Nougat as the theming in Oreo isn't like in Nougat. However since I am so used to Oreo's UI I decided to update it to Oreo again. The user experience in Oreo is much better in Oreo in my opinion. And full theming is no longer a deal breaker for me.

Question Has anyone tried GSI ROMs? How're they compared to stock? (1 III/5 III)

The title is basically self-explanatory. I'm particularly interested in these things:
AOSP/LOS/anything clean: how's battery drain? More than on stock or not?
Camera: could we replace ours with gcam? Is 70-105 switch working well?
Camera: do we have smth like XperianceCamera?
What features are we losing with unlocking bootloader? None afaics, but I may have missed something.
Thanks in advance! :^)
About Xperia 5 IV. It works great to me.
1.- No idea, never used stock. I have strong dislikes on Google.
2.- It works fine with OpenCamera, all 4 cameras detected (front, back normal, back close, back wide).
3.- No idea, I would need to try.
4.- It works fine.
Looks like I wrote a novel so TLDR:
I suck at this stuff, just getting back into custom ROMs - tried Pixel Experience 13 and Lineage OS(no Play Services (I think Android 13/A13 Beta)).
Stock Sony Rom + Root is the way to go. At least for right now.
Wouldn't count on GCam working or working well.
(Sony) Photo Pro is proprietary too afaik so you'd need someone to port it to custom OS like Lineage without G Services (what I read someone feel free to correct me). It might work with LineageOS with G Services or whatever else, I didn't try it.
END OF TLDR:
ROM EXPERIENCES:
Pixel Experience was weird, probably worked fine but I don't think the dimensions of the Xperia 5 III work well with how PE is scaled. Just this users opinion. Also I really only tried it to try it- not a huge fan of Google lately.
Lineage OS almost worked but the version I had text messages didn't work. The default one or others from F-Droid. I'm positive its user error on my part. Battery life seemed great though, it's anecdotal but it seemed markedly better without Google constantly checking in. Probably my bias.
Its important to me to have some Sony Apps and overall functionality (seems like low dev support when comparing to other devices IE Galaxy/Pixel) so I think stock Sony ROM+ Rooted is the way to go. Seemingly the general consensus on the forum too (especially since its pretty stock Android anyway).
Bonus objectives for me on stock Sony Rom is to DeGoogle + MicroG although I haven't made it all the way there yet. Then maybe long term try a Xperia 5 IV ROM for sh*ts and giggles for Android 13 since I doubt the 5 III will get it.
FUNCTIONALITY:
Your questions about GCam and losing functionality: I have heard/seen a lot of things online about GCam either needing to be ported to devices individually or that its part of Google's "Special Sauce" software wise. So I would expect stripped functionality if functional at all.
Someone who is a lot smarter and experienced than me should clarify on these last two:
Downsides to an unlocked bootloader+Custom ROM is same as always: risk of user error, bricking your device (soft bricked mine), depending on the ROM you choose you may not have Google Apps/limited so Banking apps and streaming apps won't work or won't go all the way up the resolution chain 4k20 69 fps etc. And I'm sure there is a security disclaimer somewhere out there too if you aren't careful.
Pros are same as always: Control of your device, system wide ad blocker, admin rights to delete bloatware, customization, custom ROMs, better battery life, potentially longer OS support, privacy, security, etc.
RAMBLINGS OF GETTING BACK INTO ROOTING WITH THE X5 III
*In case there are others out there who are similar to me in either getting back into rooting after a long time or the first time*
I'm pretty much a novice at this stuff but I was finally able to get my phone unlocked a few weeks ago and tried a few different ROMs. Out of what I tried I really only remember the Pixel Experience and Lineage OS. PE was fine but I'm not a huge fan of all the Google stuff so I went in the opposite direction and did Lineage OS without the Google Play Store/Services/App Framework whatever. It was almost a keeper for me except messaging wasn't working for whatever reason ((I wonder ^^)but really I think it was because it was an A13 beta). I tried a few different messaging apps but between that and losing some Sony Apps I decided to back to stock.
I feel like the big points for this phone are the camera app, the display customization depending on the content viewed, and possibly the gaming tweaks/music app? Last two are a stretch but eh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
The new plan was/is hoping to do was DeGoogle the stock ROM and replace it with MicroG. I haven't gotten around to it because the post I was looking at on how to do it on this forum linked to another post in a different forum and it was for Android 11. My phone is on Android 12. Looking at the comments people had said the process was the same for 12 as 11 or very similar. Shouldn't be too hard but knowing me it will take me another afternoon or two to get it figured out and working.
Long term I'm kind of hoping that when an Android 13 ROM comes out for the Xperia 5 IV we could try throwing it on our devices too. Since I doubt we will be getting Android 13 on the Xperia 5 III. I know the physical camera is different on the 5 IV but everything else seems close enough to a normie like me that maybe it would be worth it to try. Then its back to figuring out how to DeGoogle on an unsupported device and installing MicroG etc etc.
Sorry its such a late response and not the most technical (or maybe even 100% accurate) but that was at least my experience a bit ago trying a few different ROMs on the GSI thread linked in the "How To" post listed here.
This phone has really grown on me and I'm bummed I'm not savvy in any amount of Android development so I am unable to make customizations/tweaks to the stock ROM. Or customize other OS ROM's to port here. Which makes me reliant on others to do the work so I can leech off it haha. On more widely used phones like Samsung or the Pixel its NBD since there are so many users. But a small community like this, it doesn't seem like there is a lot being done. Not a dig or anything, just not a ton of options. Although being able to install a ton of different custom ROMS from the GSI thread is really cool even if it isn't tailored to the Xperia 5 III.
Part of why I threw up so much info on here goes with the last paragraph. You probably won't get a lot of responses. There aren't a ton of peeps here and those who are generally already know what they are doing.
If you end up trying a bunch of different ROMs and find one you really like LMK!
+1 to that. I don't get 5G and had bad time trying to obtain signal. It doesn't worth.

Thanks for putting all your experiences out here, really a huge help. I would also like to try out lineage, but can't seem to find a supported version. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction?

If you don't mind a customized one, try crDroid
i would like to try custom ROM's but since no TWRP anymore to get for the Xperia's i hate to reinstall everything just to test something new.
