Default SMS app? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I'm moving back to a Pixel (I ordered the smaller Pixel 2) phone after not having used one since the Nexus 5 days. I'm curious if they ever improved the whole SMS/MMS text messaging situation that I had with the N5 (MMS would often stop working for no apparent reason in the Google "Messenger" app). What is the default app on the Pixel 2 going to be?
And if that app stinks, what's a better alternative?

Likely the same one included in and android 8.0 which is just named Messenger. However.. It's android, you aren't limited to the default messaging app anyway there's tons of options. One that I use is Textra, it has an ad on the top unless you buy it but otherwise I found it to be far superior than any default messaging app.

Does Samsung Ever Upgrade Stock Apps?

Hi all, I'm a very recent switcher from iPhone (just got the SR 5 days ago after owning the original iPhone and then the 3gs for the past 4 years) and had a question about the stock apps.
I really like the stock Samsung e-mail app over the Gmail app for managing my gmail accounts but one thing that is a glaring omission is the inability to archive e-mails. I know you can do this through the Gmail app but to me the Samsung app is just slicker plus it has unified inbox which was great on the iPhone.
In the original iPhone mail app you used to not be able to archive Gmail email for the longest time until a fairly recent update (i think it was the same update that gave us unified inbox- not sure though). Along the same lines, is it possible that Samsung will ever update the stock e-mail app to support archiving? If so, how do you update stock apps? Does it only come with a new OS update like ICS?
I guess I could be persuaded into looking at 3rd party apps but I think I really prefer to stay with stock because I know it has been specifically designed with this phone's hardware in mind and is probably the most optimized with regards to memory management, battery, etc. Thanks!
gmail for android supports archiving already.
You might be able to archive with activesync/imap if you move the email out of the inbox folder but that's more of a hack then anything else.
To answer your original question I would not expect many changes to the stock apps excluding those that are in the market (maps, gmail, etc) until we get ics.

App Questions

Hello all,
First let me say I am very impressed with the Nexus 5. I have been using a LG Optimus G Pro as my daily driver, but took the plunge and got a Nexus 5. As I get used to my Nexus 5 I have noticed two things that I loved with my OGP and am hoping that you Nexus 5 users can point me in the right direction.
On my OGP I have a Contacts app that is just pure contacts. It does not include a dialer like some contacts apps have integrated. The one awesome feature of this app is that it has a join feature, which allows me to merge the same contact that could be across different systems(email, Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, etc). I absolutely am in love with this feature and the stock People app on my Nexus 5 does not have this feature. Does anyone have any suggestions for apps that would allow me to re-gain this functionality?
Second the default Email app on the OGP has major functionality that is not in the stock Email app on my Nexus 5. Specifically I can setup the ability to sync mail in different ways, at different times. For instance I push my mail from 8 am to 6 pm on Mon-Fri, and at all other times its a manual sync. Having this functionality allows me to minimize battery drain at times I do not need push mail. Does anyone have any suggestions for apps that would allow me to re-gain this functionality?
Like I said I am really liking my Nexus 5. I just need a few app tweaks to make this work well for me, in comparison to my OGP!
Thanks,
Steve

Severe MMS Photo Quality Degradation

My wife just picked up a Pixel, coming from a Samsung Galaxy S5. We noticed right away that MMS photos are very pixelated. They are compressed way more than they were on her S5. I didn't notice any settings to change the compression, but it's as bit annoying. Has anyone experienced anything like this?
It's just the app... I believe that googles messenger may descale or compress more than some others. Samsung's text app was one of the few things they got right... Try a diff app for text.

Thanks, I'll try Textra and report back.
No issues here using Google messenger. I'm on Verizon, my Pixel was purchased from Google store though.
Problem solved with Handcent Next SMS app. Tried Textra, and messages were taking over 10 minutes to arrive (even after playing with settings).
Glad something works better.. But just an FYI all text apps drop mms quality of photos. There are messaging apps that solely use data that won't or email if you truly want 100% of the resolution to send.

Are you by chance using a Pixel purchased from Google on Verizon's network?
I ran into this when I converted my Verizon HTC M8 to the Google Play version of the M8 by switching ROMs. There is a device identifier string inside of the framework-res.apk file and if Verizon's APN servers don't recognize it, their server sets a ridiculously low size limit on MMS (just a few kB).
This will probably require rooting your phone (at least temporarily) to resolve. Here is how I fixed it on the M8:

Sorry that this is a bit OT, but is anyone having issues recieving mms? I cannot get mms at all, on project fi. What's weird is that I can send them just fine.

Best messaging app

New to OnePlus, have the Verizon version of the 8 with the Verizon messages app as default. I'd like to go back to the Google messages app but it doesn't allow full functionality for some reason so I'm looking for a comparable replacement. Any recommendations?

A bit of backstory :
I'm literally obsessed in finding a messaging app that has good design and UX, because before Google had revamped Google message, I didn't liked the design of the app. I tried sooooo many app, in the end I can advise 2 of them that are really good (excluding Textra SMS since I heard they had privacy issues):
• Pulse: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.klinker.messenger
• QKSMS: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moez.QKSMS
Using Google Messages. Make sure your Carrier Services app is up to date. Reboot and the RCS features should work.

Dialer&Contact App

Hi guys,
after moving from 7t to my new 8t i was wondering, why Oneplus doesn not use there own dialer and contact apps? ?
Is there any way to change it or to use the oneplus apps instead?
They're moving more into Google's, same as they did with Nord.
You can however install them to your system if you're rooted: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-8t/how-to/how-to-oneplus-dialer-call-recording-t4189165
Personally I think the Google dialer, though not exactly the same as the one on the Pixels, works really good. I do not need a 3rd party app to try and stop spam...works pretty good for what it is. Why anyone would ever want to keep their contacts ON THE PHONE is beyond me! What happens if your phone fries to a crisp and you do not have a reliable backup of your contacts??? They're toast...extra crispy toast at that! Using Google contacts means you can swap phones every day and your contacts go with you...not to mention you can manipulate them from a PC. Now as for the Google Messages app...well...I don't use it because I see no benefit to RCS and Textra just blows it away so...I use Textra.
