Hello,
after struggling with Samsung S2 Kernels in the past i made a switch to Apple. Basically i did not like iphone, but i fell in love with two points:
1. ROM updates without fatal crash of the whole system
2. No Bloadware/Adware
Are there any Android phones who satisfy both points? I googled around and found a couple of interesting phones with certain weakness.
1. Google Pixel 2 (Very expensive, thats one reason not to simply buy iphone 8)
2. Oneplus 5 (Too big)
3. Xiaomi (Missing band 20, MUI stable/maintained/bloadwarefree?)
4. Huawei p10 (low end phone, bloadwarefree?)
Are there more options? Could you extend the information about the ones i found?
It's been a long time since I've been dealing with ROM's. Are there stable, maintained and easy to install options for Samsung s8 available?
As a student i loved to play around, tweak stuff and have my phone flashed every other day. Today i have to work a lot and need my phone to work properly, yet its no big deal to flash once every two years.
If those questions are already answered or you got other things that might help please send me the link, i will read everything carefully.
Thank you

Hi all,
i've spent a few days reading in these forums before i finally registered myself to get some help.
I'm currently on an iPhone 3G running together with a Macintosh and I'm finally planning to get rid of the iPhone.
My general thoughts were to leave the iOS System and get an Android Device, although lately WP7 also caught up my attention but I just think it can't keep up with Android.
I build this Mindmap to compare all the advantages and disadvantages of the operating systems and devices, and I would be thankful if anyone could add some points to the map, or even clarify things if I have missunderstood something.

(You have to delete the space after http, since new users can't post links somehow :/ )
My Priorities are on the following points:
- design
- smoothness of the whole user experience
- tethering
- customization
- adding music/movie/picture content from mac os x (since all contact/calendar information is now synced in the cloud)
And while I don't yet understand what the difference between the 2 billion different firmwares presented on this site is, I think I could work myself into the whole topic, and flash my device (E.g. to make the Galaxy S smoother).
Thanks in advance,
Smirny
P.S.: Note that this Mindmap represents my own thinking of what is an advantage and what is not. E.g. I put the App Store thing as a negative of the iPhone, since there are just primitive apps and no system-affecting apps like on cydia etc.
I bought a iPhone 4 and owned it for two months and returned it almost IMMEDIATELY after playing with a android os phone ... apple ripped off a ton of stuff from android a called it apple innovations
... LOL

Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 All the way man !
The Galaxy S could be my choice, since it has 2 cameras and Gingerbread could offer some "FaceTime" alternative ... but we've got that lousy Firmware support from Samsung, so I don't know when we can expect a official Gingerbread for the Galaxy S I9000 :/
Hi,
Im currently considering a replacement phone so I could store my NS into drawer. BTW I just realized its almost exactly a year a wrote similar post - November 27th 2012 ... but I sticked with NS so far ...
Ive got three candidates
- Android-powered Moto G and Nexus 5 (Id prefer the latter, but in my country costs N5 about 50% more then MotoG so its a thing to consider)
- WP8-powered Lumia 920
To say about Android - Ive got some purchased apps but its not a big deal for me. Of the two mentioned cells, Id love N5 because I would have the opportunity to flash much more different roms, thanks to the "support" from Google. I believe MotoG would be ok too and is much cheaper.
To say about Windows: While I use many widgets on my Android, Ive got no problem to stop using them - I generally dont look at them anyway (eg. Tasks, AgendaWidgetPlus) or they have WP8 equivalent (eg. Nameday widget).
Also, Im a bit bored with Android after all the years (not saying the improvements, especially in 4.4, are not good) and the unified look of the whole UI.
So now, afther having completely setup my Google web and mobile applications, Im playing with Outlook.com and the MS account ... and considering which way to go ... And I need some help or better to say guidelines ...

I'd chose Nexus 5...as far as I had it ( 5 min ) due to a friend that purchased it lat week,it is simply awsome...
NOTE: I have read the older threads HD2 vs Galaxy S, but they're from the very beginnings of the two and, while I still believe some of the comments are fair enough, they refer to other times.
Ok, so here's the background: I own a Galaxy S (GT-i9000) and I am not satisfied at all with it. Whatever Android version I'll flash on it, it does always strike back with some annoying bugs. Stock GB 2.3.6 works but many apps I have will not go along with it; CM9 (ICS 4.0.4) works, but hangs too often. CM10 (both JB 4.1.2 and 4.2.1) for some reason is so slow I can't even keep it for a day-to-day use, and it crashes frequently with no apparent reason. Finally I ended up using a CM11 nightly (KK 4.4.2), and seems to work, I'm still testing it.
But the point is I can't keep going on like this. It's more than a year that I don't have a stable configuration on the phone and I keep flashing ROMs and installing apps over and over every two weeks or so, every time going through all the settings again and again, restoring backing up and restoring... I'm just tired of it all!
Today, good news: A friend gifted me his HTC HD2 because he messed up with the software and the phone wasn't working anymore. I managed to flash the original WM6.5 OS and I found out that the touchscreen wouldn't respond to any kind of touches -> most probable cause, as discovered from searches, is the touchscreen controller which got broken. A touchscreen (only) would cost me around 25€ (around 35$ USD) excluded the costs of the actual replacing job. Not a very big deal, I may afford that.
I haven't tried an Android OS on the HD2 (even if wanted, I couldn't with a broken touch) but I see there are many custom ROMs available, and this is nice. Hardware differences seem to be not too big and honestly I like very much the HD2 design and the slightly heavy feel of it in my hand (off topic: what's all this thing about making phones light-weight? it's not like people would love to have a piece of paper in hand instead of a phone ). The Galaxy S is just awful from this point of view and as I said before, I am not satisfied at all with it.
The big question: is it worth spending money on the HD2, so I could replace my Galaxy S (possibly sell it)? Or should I keep the Galaxy S? When replying with your opinion on which should I keep, please add your reasons for suggesting such. And before you ask, yes, I have a whole life (apps) on android that I need so I would be using Android on the HD2. Thank you very much in advance!
Hello,
There are 3 threads devoted to discussions about devices, please repost your question in one of these three threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread.
Thanks!
As posted in the Title, I need a tablet to use for dev/test/demo purposes. Mostly B2B applications. I'm having a hard time finding one that meets my needs. Please help!
Preferences:
1. Would like to stay as close to stock android as possible.
2. Updates and Support. There are two routes in mind, a very cheap device that we would have to replace frequently, or preferably a more solid device that will get updates for years to come.
Side note: Root and custom rom might get approved with a device with a factory unlock-able bootloader. This would have to be from a company with a good track record like OnePlus for example.
In the past we've used Nexus devices for dev/test/demo purposes. Now that those are no longer made, we'll probably get a pixel 3a for a phone form factor. They've supported the original for over 3 years now. Correct me if that's not a good option.
Mods, feel free to move this if there is a better place for this question.
Hello,
my last rooted phone was the s3 many years ago. That aside, tomorrow marks the 3rd day I've had my Oneplus 8 5G. I seen a post where a guy will unlock your bootloader (which I will message him about). I was looking around to see what roms exist and it looks like there isn't many if any at all. There used to be tons for the s3. what happened? is the oneplus 8 not popular for rooting or something.

No, it's just the time for users to enjoy 3 years of oxygenOS update. Android 11 will come sooner for OEM, ROMs are a bit slower.
Plus it's special with OnePlus devices. We could call OOS a custom ROM with all the customizations features it offers. And trust me, it's not funny to flash a ROM on your device right away, take the time to be fed up with the UI/UX, then flash something.
To answer your question, ROMs are coming, but later. We already have unofficial LOS and official Paranoid Android (one if the best ROM out there to me). And we have a lot of kernel (proof that what we need for now isn't to modify the ROM, only maybe the kernel). But it'll sure come !
most likely after android 11 is released. currently in my opinion android 10 is quite stable.
In actuality it is because of the way that android 10 changes file systems and the ways you can interact with them. For a huge example, most phones that shipped with Android 9 or before can install twrp (if available). Phones that ship with Android 10 (and presumably 11 in the future) cannot, because for now, twrp is in a semi functional state, but many important things are broken. Like the ability to modify the system partition. Which is essential to installing a custom rom.
