What do you power your unit on the bench with ? - MTCD Android Head Units Q&A

Hey yah'll just wondering what everyone uses to give juice to your unit while its on the bench ?
I was using the battery from my boat but am now using a much smaller one I use for my depth radar, wich uses a 12v 1000mA dc charger.
Would it harm the unit if I had both plugged in so the charger can charge the battery while I'm muckin around installing stuff ?
Dont want to set it on fire or anything lol nut I think 1000mA is a bit much ?

Your head unit only draws about 1 amp with no speakers attached. I power mine with a wall adapter rated at 2 amps 12v dc. Powering off of a battery is just like in a car. Charging happens all the time and voltage can vary from 11 - 16 volts.

Thank You !
Yah I took a gamble lastnight & just tried it and she works fine.!
Been trying to get that dang Version Unmatch 01 error off the screen, driving me mad !!

High powered USB car charger?

Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a high mAh output usb car charger? It has to be one with a detachable USB lead.
The one I have currently takes forever just to charge the device by a 1% increment. It doesn't also seem to provide enough power when for example I have sat-nav/GPS running (the device still drops in battery power).
Thanks.
dont even think....
dont even think about it.... i got a charger that does 2 amps instead of 1 amp and guess what my battery blew up!
So what's optimal/maximum amp rating that I can use?
The one I have I would say is pretty much useless when using battery hungry applications/services.
Just tried to check my existing charger but there is no rating on it.
Would I able right in saying the following:
A charger with a 1000 mAh, would charge my battery by 1000 mA in a hour?
I believe HTC official chargers have a rating of 1000 mAh too right? Mine one may well be 500 I would guess.
How quick do other peoples car charger charge their Diamonds?

A charger's specification would never indicate the mAh ( milliamp hour)rating, but would indicate the maximum current it can supply while maintaining an operating voltage (for usb its 5Volts.)
in answer to your question: yes your charger needs to supply more current when you have your Diamond operating and charging at the same time. not all chargers are made equal. some may max out by 500mA, therefore your diamond wont charge at all if its on. as far as I know, most chargers are rated to supply 2A (or 2000mA)
another thing: your diamond uses its own charging circuitry to recharge and maintain its battery. just because a charging adapter says it charges at 1000mAh, i doubt it would actually recharge your battery from 0% capacity to full% capacity in an hour(it just doesnt work that way, and if it did, then your battery could blow up).
as for my own diamond, i seems that it takes around 3-4 hours to get from 0% to full when it is off and using my stock 950mAh.
doing a little math here: 950mAh / 4 hours = ~250mA
therefor in order to recharge your battery, the charging adapter needs to supply 250mA.
but if your diamond is ON and you want to recharge then your charging adapter needs to supply 250mA AND and additional amount of current to maintain your diamonds power.
if youre still able to follow with what im saying here, you may conclude that you just have a DUD charger and you should just buy another one.
as for the other guy who said that a 2Ah charger blew his battery up. I'm a bit skeptical. I think your chargering circuit in your diamond is more likely to fry before blowing a battery up (and if a lithium battery blew up it would have taken out his entire diamond).
Yep, that all makes sense.
By chance, My battery (1800mAH) totally died last night. Put it on car charger and after almost exactly a hours worth of charging, the battery indicated 1% (!) Mind TomTom was running for about 30 minutes of that.
Ok time to buy a new higher rated charger I think. Any recommendations for one with a USB port on it?
Thanks.
i've been looking for one liek that on e-bay as well but i cannot seem to find one. having a detachable usb cord would be nice, but now that i think about it maybe i am better off finding one with a non detachable cable in the event that I dont have a usb cable around.
Yeah, I wouldn't normally mind one with an attached cord but the setup in my car is such that I already have a semi hard wired a usb from a 12v supply and have the [USB] cable hidden then have it pop out near to my car holder.
bingo

2A Car Charger for Desire

Hi Guys,
Saw this 2A car charger for HTC Desire, thought I'll post it here and ask everyone if this will work well with HTC Desire. I dont want to damage my new Desire by buying something that kills it.

Let me know your comments.

Amps are not pushed to the phone from the power source,
They are pulled by the phone, from the power source.
Therefore the phone will only request what it needs, IE you cant overload it.
Voltage on the other hand will!
So to answer your question,
it will be ok.

Thanks Fon22. pardon my lack of knowledge , so what diff will a 700ma or 1000ma will have against 2A car charger ?? Any benefits ? or its better to buy a cheapo 2$ 700ma charger ?
WEll, it's best to get the charger that can deliver the most Amps. So if the phone needs it because you're using GPS and music and what have you - then the amps will be available instead of the phone consumes more battery than it gets from the charger.
So get the one with the biggest Amp spec - but still 12 volts
Thanks guys.
And If I am not wrong , It should work with HTC Desire as well (it is being advertised as being Touch HD)..
Cheers!

I know you're referring to the source (input) voltage, but just incase it confuses someone, you want the OUTPUT voltage of the charger to be 5V. Output voltage of 12V would almost certainly do damage as the stock charger and USB spec are at 5V +/- nominal tolerances.
Amps though, yes. Preferable to have something which can deliver at least 1A.
That is correct - the INPUT is 12V as per the car battery, but the OUTPUT should be no more than 5V - thank's for clearing that up
1A is enough.
It's another important thing to this.
I tried to explain the issue here:

[Q] HTC sensation charging with cigaretlighter on motorcycle

Hi
I'm having a problem with charging my HTC devices on my Honda Fireblade.
My motorcycle dealer added a cigaretlighter so I can charge the HTC while driving and using it as GPS.
The problem is that the Sensation (and even my Desire HD or HD2) won't charge although the indicator light on the charger is on. So I've tested the charger with other equiment and it works.
Does anyone knows what can be the problem? The battery of the Honda is 12V
thx for any advise!
What is the charger output?
It should have 5V and 1A or 2A. If voltage lower, it will not charge..

I use this charger also in the car and there it works.
I bought this charger when I was on a trip and it's original for nokia
He's right, your charger probably doesn't have enough output. I noticed that certain house chargers I already had were charging the phone extremely slow and others charged the phone quickly. That's when I noticed that the ones that charged the phone quickly were 5v and had at least 1A. The ones that were less were too low of an output to charge the phone properly. You're more than likely experiencing the same thing. I'm willing to bet if you check what the output is on the charger you're using you'll probably see it either isn't the right voltage or the amps are too low...or both.

All right, I'll check it first....it's in the car now
The nokia charger is
input 12 V
output 5V - 550mA
So you guys are right....it still doesn't explain to me why the charger works in car and not on motorcycle. Maybe because the battery output in car is higher A?
I'm not into electrical stuff :-(
So, if I order for example this one....it could work on my motorbike?

Bear in mind I'm just speculating with this but your car's cigarette lighter may be putting out more power than your motorcycle's (especially since it wasn't original). Also though it may have been charging in your car, that doesn't mean it was charging at the rate it should have been (it might have been barely charging). Sort of like what I was saying I had experienced when I used a lower output charger (the really slow charging).
Yeah that looks ok. I'd imagine that you be sufficient.
The charger I have is a Nokia DC-4. Bought from Nokia themselves as lots of shops sell copies. The copies don't seem to have the right electronics in them to power the more expensive (read: power hungry) phones. I have to have a converter on the end to go to micro-usb (also a Nokia part) but it means we can also use it for the wife's Nokia.
I'd make sure you went genuine part, or at least one that someone else says works.

It should be working. But better you try it first, borrow from a friend that have this charger and try it on your motobike. If still not working. My conclusion is that your motobike most probabily produce a low voltage or current than what it were suppose to.

can I measure the output current on my bike?

[Q] charger question

Hello,
I have a micro usb charger that cam with my hp touchpad. looking at the label it seems like it supplies a 2A current as opposed to the 1A our phone takes. Can i use it on the G2x resulting in faster charging or will i damage the battery?
thanks,

You can use it as long as it supplies the correct the voltage. I use a 2amp charger with my G2X and I love how fast my phone charges. The phone will only draw as much as it can.
A faster charge results in a hotter battery. Some people think fast charging the battery is also the cause of the infamous SOD (Sleep of Death). Keep an eye (or ahnd) on your phone and make sure it is not getting too hot while on the charger.

The hotter the battery goes, the shorter the battery life span will result as li-ion battery doesn't quite like in hot temp. Never tried a 2A charger to charge my G2X, so I would not know. But I am using a 1A charger to it and it works great If 2A charges does not cause the battery to go too hot, it should be fine.
I've been using this charger since May with no issues. The battery will only draw as much as its capable of drawing. As long as the voltage is the same as the stock charger then there is no issue. You could connect it to a 5 amp charger and it would still only draw the 1.x amps its designed to draw.
Going too low on amperage is where you have to be careful.
thanks for the replies, turns out that 2A charger is 5.3V as opposed to the 4.8V LG charger...

+1 on that, LG may be dumb, but they're not dumb enough to let their phone overload with un-needed electricity.

3 amp charger.

I guess you could consider a aftermarket charger a accessory....... so ive seen on here that every one is pretty satisfied with the 2amp charging speed on our phones, I had a 3amp charger (lost it) that I tried to charge my gs3 on and the battery got really hot. I wonder if a 3amp usp port would charge the gs4 faster?? Or just be a wast of money?

S4 has a hardware limitation on charging current, right now it won't go above 1100mah while charging which is 1.1a, perhaps in future with kernel development we'll be able to raise the charging current but for now purchasing a charger above 2a would be completely useless.

On this point what you need to realize is that the usb cable loses a bunch of the power on the way... so like, a 3 foot cable might deliver most of the power to the phone ... a 10foot cable might only deliver 66% of it... so really a 2amp charger is whatthe s4 needed but going above it is kind of useless
The S4 actually goes to 1,910a when charging, I've checked with and app (galaxy charging current) that's why it charges so fast

Do the lights dim everywhere in your house?
Oh and guys/gals, you cannot get around Ohm's law. 2A at 5V is 10Watts. You can use a 10A (50W) PSU but your phone will only use what it's designed to charge at unless you increase the voltage which I don't recommend unless you like to smell burned electronics.
Larger power supplies do have an advantage, however. You can charge multiple devices at the same time, i.e. a tablet, phone, spare battery, all at once. Good to prepare for a storm like we had last night here.

Haha yes I figured, just being sarcastic, no harm meant.
I will add using this app I find interesting results of cable length vs. mA delivered. If you want to charge fast use a shorter cord.
I may connect it to a bench supply and see how it reacts to a gentle overvolt, say 5.5V. This could be what's needed to compensate for a longer cable, i.e. getting ~2A with a ten foot cable!

The currents which we're discussing when charging apply from the phone to the battery which subsequently uses the battery voltage as a charging indicator. Those 1.9A only happen at low battery percentages with voltages around 3.6V or lower, with raising voltage the current is limited. This is basically what QC quickcharge is. I don't really see the gimmick in it, as such a logic could be emulated in software on any phone.
