Blueborne Patch for T-Mobile Note 5 Update - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

I just got of the the phone with T-Mobile support a few minutes ago, and they informed me that they will be pushing the September security patch, including Blueborne fix, on or before Oct 7.
Until the patch is installed, they are recommending that you keep your Bluetooth disabled.

It appears that they lied.

Sounds about right coming from t-mobile

Actually, it appears that Samsung lied to T-Mobile.. Samsung decided not to release the September patch because, as they told me, "Not to worry, Samsung phones are not vulnerable" to the exploit. Samsung indicated, as did T-Mobile, that they are skipping the September patch but plan to push the October patch around the end of the month. T-Mobile said that Samsung has delayed due to focus on getting the Samsung Now 8to market on time.
As Samsung said, "Samsung will never make its customers unhappy and your security is our priority." Bulsh#t. Gets the full transcript of my chat with Samsung:

Sudeep S: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Samsung Technical Support. How may I assist you?
Jeff: Hi Sudeep.
Sudeep S: How are you?
Jeff: Well, and you?
Sudeep S: I am fine, thank you for asking.
Jeff: When will Samsung be pushing the Note 5 Sept security patch to TMO?
Sudeep S: We have a dedicated team to assist you on the product that you are inquiring about. Please stay online while I transfer the chat to the appropriate department for further assistance.
Info: Please wait while your chat is transferred to the appropriate group.
Info: You are now chatting with Archana C.
Archana C: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Samsung Technical Support. How may I assist you?
Jeff: Can you tell me when Samsung be pushing the Note 5 Sept security patch to TMO?
Archana C: Give me a moment to go through your previous chat.
Archana C: Okay, Jeff.
Archana C: Help me with base band version of phone.
Archana C: You can find it in About device >> Base band version.
Jeff: N920TUVU4EQG3
Archana C: Jeff, I see that your phone is up to date. As of now, there is no available updates to phone.
Archana C: I should inform you that updates are pushed trough carriers by Samsung in batches.
Archana C: If there is any update released then you would receive the On The Air update to the phone.
Jeff: The phone is definitely up to date, and has not received the Sept patch. TMO says that you have not provided patch to them
Jeff: The most recent one is August. Phone is subject to silent Blueborne (bluetooth) takeover exploit
Jeff: Definitely _NOT_ up to date
Archana C: We do not have exact details on when the updates released to phones.
Archana C: Jeff, not to worry about that.
Jeff: NOT TO WORRY ABOUT A SILENT EXPLOIT THAT IS VERY WELL KNOWN???? ARE YOU KIDDING????
Jeff: Unable to safely use key features of phone. Other phone providers have pushed updates to the carriers including TMO.
Jeff: This will be last Samsung phone I purchase as clearly Samsung does not prioritize security of customer information.
Archana C: Jeff, I should inform you that Samsung phones are not affected by this Blueborne.
Jeff: That is absolutely false.
Archana C: However, our team is taking security measures but have not released any security update til now.
Archana C: If it release the update, then you will receive the notification to your phone.
Jeff: All other phone providers have pushed the Sept patch as have the telcos. Why not Samsung??
Jeff: And why did you tell me that my phone is safe?
Jeff: I can only conclude the Samsung does not care about security of customer information.
Jeff: This is a lie: "Jeff, I should inform you that Samsung phones are not affected by this Blueborne."
Jeff: or you have been provided false information to convey to customers
Archana C: Jeff, there is no Samsung phone affected to this. That's what information we have from our sources.
Jeff: That is absolutely false.
Archana C: I understand your concern, Jeff.
Jeff: It seems that you do not understand my concerns at all
Archana C: However, Samsung is in process to release the update to phones.
Jeff: Why are you in process to release the update if " there is no Samsung phone affected".
Archana C: Samsung will never make its customers unhappy and your security is our priority.
Jeff: I'd like a straight answer on something that is a severe defect in a product that I have purchased from Samsung
Jeff: Well, you are making me unhappy, and it is clear that my security is not a priority.
Jeff: So, please stop using canned responses and get a proper answer.
Archana C: Give me a moment.
Archana C: I've reconfirmed with my supervisor. We haven't received official confirmation yet because we haven't come across such issues with Samsung devices. When the update is available for release through Samsung, you will receive a notification asking to download and install the update.
Jeff: You have received official confirmation from Armis security several months ago (multiple times) and have not responded.
Jeff: You have also been informed by Google
Jeff: As to a customer complaining that their phone has been hacked due to this exploit, it is a silent exploit, so they would never know that all of their personal and private information has been stolen from the device.
Jeff: So, your response is not meaningful in the least.
Jeff: Nor comforting.
Archana C: I definitely understand, Jeff. I will surely report this on your behalf to the appropriate team who will take necessary action.
Jeff: Well, you guys just lost me as a customer. I won't be coming back.
Archana C: Samsung takes security issues very seriously, Jeff.
Jeff: There is ZERO evidence of that. There is abundant evidence to the contrary
Archana C: Please be assured that your phone would not be affected.
Archana C: Meanwhile, you will receive the security update to your phone.
Jeff: THAT IS A LIE. THE PHONE IS WIDE OPEN TO BEING AFFECTED
Archana C: I will make my efforts to report this to the right department.
Jeff: Great. They already know, and apparently this isn't important to them.
Jeff: So unimportant that they have provided you false information so that uninformed customers are comforted.
Jeff: And, strangely, you keep repeating it.
Archana C: Jeff, that's an important to us. Samsung will never provide you with the false information to comfort.
Jeff: Then why have you done so multiple times?
Archana C: Jeff, that's true that no Samsung phone is affected by that.
Jeff: THAT IS A LIE. The phone has been independently confirmed to be vulnerable. Unlike Apple and Microsoft phones, all Android phones, including Samsung's, use the Linux-based Bluetooth stack which is vulnerable. That vulnerabilty is closed with the September update which Samsung has not provided.
Jeff: I'm done. This is a stupid conversation.
Archana C: Jeff, Samsung will release the security updates soon.
Jeff: I'll be purchasing a phone from an alternative vendor.
Archana C: Please be assured.
Archana C: Give us a chance, Jeff.
Archana C: I am sure that you will receive the update to your phone soon.
Archana C: Just to confirm, are we connected on the chat?
Jeff: yes
Archana C: Please be assured, Jeff. You will receive update soon to your phone.
Archana C: Do you have any questions to me?
Jeff: No

Are they serious?! Samsung phones aren't vulnerable?? Wow...
I like Samsung phones and their hardware but not their lack of seriousness when it comes to vulnerabilities. You were right to call out the rep for his textbook responses. For him to lie to you straight up like that makes me also not want to buy a Samsung phone either like you said--sad thing is they don't care. I'm still on the July patch by the way so I didn't even get August. I continually check for software updates and even just a few minutes ago it said I'm up to date.
If Samsung wants to keep competing with Apple they need to wisen up and support phones that people like us paid good money for. The phone is just two years old and its already getting neglected not just on Oreo but on serious security patches. I use Bluetooth a lot for my car and for now it makes me nervous. Samsung needs to fix this and continue to support the Note 5 with further patches. Ridiculous.

Still no update. I say we keep calling T-mobile and Samsung to get them to push the update out faster

If you use the Final version of KHONGLOI-NOUGAT ROM, when you run the app to check to see if your vulnerable, it comes back as being safe.

I'm not rooted though. Sad part is that rooting your device and voiding your warranty actually keeps you safe as far as security patches go whereas "playing by the rules" and waiting on updates puts you at risk. Go figure.
I don't want to root and risk messing up my phone. I really shouldn't have to. Samsung and T-mobile should get their **** together and put out timely updates. They need to cut down on the amount of phones they make and focus on UPDATES instead.
I want to edit this to include something. I said above rooting actually keeps you safe and I know rooting your phone opens you up to vulnerabilities but I'm talking in the sense of flashing ROMs with the latest security patches. Just wanted to clarify

still no update

I called T-mobile and now they said between this Friday and next Tuesday we should have a security update. So we'll find out soon if that's true

I will be checking for an update today. Today is supposed to be the last day within the time frame I was promised for an update.

No update from T-mobile for any security issues on the Note 5. Good thing I can still use my Dell laptop from 2010 that has the latest patches...

Super Bad News: JH7 is it!

Just chatted again with Samsung Support and there is no additional update coming out to fix the GPS. Anyone wanting to jump ship waiting for a fix, can jump now.
here is my chat log...
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Alice '
Visitor: hello alice
Alice : Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: I had chatted with support last week about the over the air update to my captivate phone via att.
Visitor: the samsung rep told me not to do it
Visitor: which i did not.
Visitor: I did notice that a Kies mini application is now listed on your website
Visitor: should i install that? will that give me the update to my captivate phone?
Alice : Yes, that's correct.
Visitor: I understand from my previous chat session that a gps update was coming
Visitor: before the end of september
Visitor: is the update from this Kies mini program that update? or something else?
Alice : The update was for the firmware and to fix the GPS issue as well.
Alice : I'm sorry, the update is not for Kies.
Visitor: I was told that the update, wasn't the gps update
Visitor: and it wasn't ready yet, and that when it would be ready it would be on the samsung website
Alice : I'm sorry for the mis-communication.
Visitor: after speaking with my friend who applied the update, he said his gps didn't get any better
Alice : The update was for the firmware which also enhances and fixes the GPS issue.
Visitor: is the over the air update the same as the one from the Kies mini?
Visitor: so is it fair to say, that this is "the update" and no other ones are coming out to fix the gps issue?
Alice : No, the firmware only updates the connectivity name from Samsung Kies to Kies.
Visitor: i do not understand your last reply
Visitor: once i load the mini kies software, it will push out an update with the last letters JH7
Alice : I understand your concern.
Visitor: this firmware or fix is the one to fully address the gps issue?
Alice : Yes, that's correct.
Visitor: there are no other updates coming out before end of september?
Visitor: so i am to expect the next update will be android 2.2 operating system?
Alice : Please click on the link given below to access the article with instructions to update the handset:
Alice : http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=339171
Alice : The Update is not for Android 2.2.
Alice : In the future, the device should be upgradeable to Android Froyo 2.2.
Alice : Important Notice: Samsung Customer Care has no knowledge of when/if a release will be made available prior to official release.
Visitor: what i am trying to get at.. is there any other gps fixes or updates coming out to make the gps respond better
Visitor: i think there maybe an issue with my phone because i am unable to check for a software update
Visitor: it says it can't connect to att servers
Alice : The link provided is to update the handset and if the fix for GPS issue.
Alice : In this regard, I suggest you try updating the handset after a while as the network to update is now al a maximum load and may take some time.
Visitor: i read the article
Visitor: and it does not say there is a gps fix or update in it
Visitor: sorry
Visitor: see it now
Visitor: ok will try kies mini route.
Visitor: if my gps is still not working properly what do you suggest?
Visitor: a replacement?
Alice : Typically Samsung warranty covers repair only, unfortunately I do not have the authority to offer any exchanges at this time. If you would like to only discuss an exchange at this time, I can recommend that you contact our Voice support at 1-888-987-4357, Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST).
Visitor: I of course have to try the update first...
Visitor: but in your opinon, should i request an exchange if it does not work?
Alice : If you experience any issue after updating the handset, please call the above provided phone support for the options available according to the situation.
Visitor: ok thanks for your help
Samsung supports are typically clue less. Don't take their words for anything. For all I care, you might just chatted with a bot.
great bot! check out the link the bot sent me... clearly it says gps update.

Yes, that's what the info they got. Remember Samsung publically said the same thing when JH7 is first released. Support CSRs are the last person to know any upcoming updates. That shows how bad Samsung support really are.
Great, Samsuck totally screwed us with this
I'll give Samsung/ATT until the end of September to get an actual GPS fix out, like they said they would.
I have already called AT&T about the issue and they are prepared to give me another phone of my choice if I decide to send it back to them.
Otherwise, I will probably sell it and go back to a Nexus One or maybe attempt to get a Telus Desire. I think it has the ATT 3G bands.
Alice seems to frequent these forums from Samsung chat logs. She never seems to know whats going on either.
I just went up through the ranks of Samsung customer support right before posting this. Chat first, won't waste your time posting it here as it has already wasted enough of my time. Second, phone call to "tier 2" support, had me do a battery pull and restart, obviously a waste of time, got transferred to "tier 3" support, apparently the highest level of support and where I was really trying to get anyway. Had me go into settings and turn on "wireless networks", yet another complete waste of time. However, I wasn't looking for him to fix it over the phone, I only wanted information.
Believe me when I tell you I held his feet to the fire looking for some information on whether or not there was ANY information or ANY update coming out AFTER the JH7 OTA update. He assured me there was no information on any other update in the pipe other than JH7 which had obviously already been released. I did get him to divulge that they have had "a few" other calls from people who's GPS was still not working even after the update and that the calls that had come in so far were only for the samsung captivate and that they hadn't had any other calls in regards to the other Galaxy S phones on the other carriers which seems suspect to me since to the best of my knowledge, all the other Galaxy S phones share the same GPS problems. He said all he could do was take down my information and pass it on to "research and development". I even tried to get him to transfer me to research and development to no avail.
In the end, the only recourse I had was to mail a letter to "Customer Relations" or some such thing in Texas explaining my situation. I really believe that the only thing I took from the conversation that was of any real use is that the only way they are going to do anything about the problem is if they get enough people calling and complaining about it.
Do yourself and all of us a favor and call in to voice your concern with getting the problem fixed. It only takes a couple of minutes and maybe someone will be able to get more information than I was able to. 1-888-987-4357. Sorry I don't have better news to report.

samsungs crappy support ftw!
Another post about an uninformed service rep - taken as gospel.
I really wish all the people that posted and believed this stuff would actually jump ship - then the forums would have less junky alarmist posts.
I have to say, that was somewhat painful to read. You pretty much railroaded her. You kept making multiple unrelated statements and mixing them with multiple questions before giving her a chance to respond. I don't feel like you could learn anything that way.

Good point, it was really hard to read that. It may be an automated bot it may not be, but the questions were so all over the place that it was impossible to tell what was going on.
Again, if this was a person making matter of fact statements - it is not someone in the know. It is just a 1st or 2nd level tech support person and they never know what is really happening in the dev world.
I didn't think there would be such a backlash against me about this thread. I was trying to be helpful and let others know that according to support, there isn't another update for GPS.
If you want to believe it is a robot, or canned, or some dumbass they put on the chats is your right. But my bubble has been burst and I don't think another fix is coming.
My strategy was to try and see if Alice would slip and let me know if there was a gps update coming out. She did not falter.
I would love to be proven wrong and would love to see the magic bullet gps fix, but i have zero hopes of that now.
The gps is big for me, but the rest of the phone is great.
I think everyone can agree this was a debacle for Samsung, and my next phone will probably be an HTC.
I will also keep most things to myself as well because clearly they are unhelpful in this forum.
We all know there is Froyo update that will be coming in a month or two. Samsung has the time to tweak the GPS more or even fix it in Froyo build.
But I don't think there is any Eclair 2.1 GPS fix in the works. All indications are Samsung has decided to move on.
Nothing personal against OP but I personally will not trust anything Samsung support said over the phone or in a chat session. Have been there many many times before.
Today a Samsung rep told me the sky would be falling...
Okay all jokes aside and as someone who has worked support before, reps are bottom feeders. They do not know anything about their company, their companies mission, or current development/progress. They are given a task, and their task is to find a way to keep you from calling in again while making sure that you buy a product from them in the future.
From the responses, she is not a bot. Thinking it is a bot is just silly, however, this does look scripted. Likely samsung is using India, the phillipines, etc.
If you allow this interaction to shape your feelings about your phone, I would like to question your intelligence. You're going to get this from any company. The grass isn't any greener on the other side.
Don't expect better from htc. The evo was capped at 30 fps. All the reps told anyone who asked that this would be unfixable in software because it was a hardware cap. They stuck to their story until a few days ago, when they removed the cap in software. That's not an isolated incident either. I remember when they sold phones with great gpus and advertised that fact. They didn't actually have drivers for it in the phone, so the gpu just say there inert. They never fixed that. Htc regularly lies to their customers, just like samsung.

I'm curious as to how you "know" a Froyo update is coming in a month or two? AT&T has never once officially committed to releasing a 2.2 update. The only thing that's been official is that the I-9000 was supposed to get 2.2 by the end of september, and now that's slipped back to some time in October, probably the end of the month. Samsung has to get any updates approved by AT&T. Maybe I'm missing something, but I have not seen one official word from AT&T concerning this, just speculation on top of conjecture from people on here "in the know"...
Alice and Kies-Min
I'm in the USA so technically according to *Alice* with which I also chatted online, Kies is not supported. (of course that person provided the link to Kies Mini anyways) I was clearly told this is the JH7 update which WILL fix the GPS. From other forums I have read I will lose PC/Internet (tethering). Alice indicated yes, I'd lose that then.. oh wait, no I wouldn't.. it'd be a choice I could chose. So I downloaded and installed KiesM. I connected my phone and no surprise it didn't recognize it. I rebooted the phone. I am rooted, 1click lag fix and att bloatware removed. The KiesM found my phone and said it was unregistered and would not allow me to update it. I then closed the app and opened up normal Kies. It found there was a new version of Kies (assumed it included the JH7 update) and it downloaded etc. It also said it could update my firmware. When i attempted I get an error showing my pda, phone and software versions and states (while none are jh7) that it could not be updated. I also have tried the over the air option and continue to get no updates available. So, I can't even get this (what about half say sucks other half love) update even if I wanted to. Pretty disappointing. I really do love this phone EXCEPT that it doesnt connect to my alpine ida-x001 which I have scoured forums everywhere to see why the usb continually connects and disconnects and this second issue, poor, terrible GPS functionality. Last night was the first time I actually needed it but fortunately I can read a map and street signs fairly well and didnt need the locator beacon, just the actual address. Point of my long post, if you know how to get the update via kies let me know. If you know that it being rooted and ATT's bloatware will prevent it from installing, respond to let me know and I can try the update. I'm not opposed to it... however reluctant i am according to the negative posts..

In the US Galaxy S release party, Samsung publically promised Froyo 2.2 for all US Galaxy S variants. AT&T didn't say otherwise. So, we will take the Samsung's PR or marketing's words for granted.

Anyone else tired of waiting on Verizon?

After today's expected launch went without an event, I contacted Verizon.
Here is the link to the about page for VP and Chief Marketing Officer, Marni Walden.
http://bit.ly/iAKpSp
I sent her the following letter (click the link at the bottom of her page)
Ms. Walden,
I am contacting you as a very disgusted customer. Since last fall, I have been waiting for Verizon to release a Windows Phone 7 device. I learned in the fall that this device would not be available on the CDMA networks, and as a software developer, I understand how Microsoft had not yet implemented support for it. However, Verizon has been stringing its customers along for about five months now with the implied promise of a Windows Phone 7 device, yet has not delivered.
In December, VZW advertized to Microsoft employees the Trophy, and it promised an "Early 2011" delivery. That offer had an expiration date of 12/31/2010, although that delivery has been pushed back to March, April, and May, and the delivery time range has been removed from the flier.
On March 23 the CDMA Sprint HTC Arrive was released. CDMA support was finally here. But Verizon dragged its feet. An April launch was expected, because despite the tight lips at Verizon, pictures were leaked of a Verizon branded Trophy, as well as an April expiration date on the Microsoft employee offer. That came and went. Now two Thursdays in May have come and gone without the device that many of us are waiting for.
You are not doing anything but making customers angry by dragging your feet, not releasing the device, and not giving us a release date. You are holding on to a phone that was available in Europe last October, albeit without CDMA support. Which means if you wait much longer you will be releasing a year-old phone. Do you think it is all right to treat your customers like this? Are you that ticked off at Microsoft over the failure of the Kin that you are willing to drag your customers who want the Windows Phone through the mud like this?
It is high time for whomever at Verizon is throwing the temper tantrum about the Kin to get over it, and give us the phone we want. I don't want one of the 47 different Android phones you now carry. I don't want the iPhone. I and many well-informed consumers like me, want a Windows Phone 7 device. Please quit holding us hostage.
Sincerely,
Richard Hopkins
Verizon frustrating
I've talked to many salespeople about what signs there are of the Trophy being released. The general consensus is that the rumor start a month before the device is available and training is done a week before. None of these things have happened for the Windows Phone 7 device. There are two blank spots at Costco for two new devices.........maybe.....?
A dummy device was spotted at Best Buy this week. http://bit.ly/iig3Sr
XBox Live had a Verizon Trophy theme for download yesterday (since pulled) http://bit.ly/mTOJbU
Verizon employee training started two weeks ago. http://bit.ly/itTXms
The phone is currently on Bestbuy.com, and can be placed in shopping cart, but order cannot yet be completed. http://bit.ly/mbk04A
Press shots have been leaked http://bit.ly/m3wCia
Verizon is excited to offer Win Phone 7 http://cnet.co/erI5Wp
I'm not sure how much louder the rumors could get, to be honest.
Encouragement
Just talked to another Verizon guy and he said training was last week. Asked the Costco people and they said they "hoped" that one of the spaces was for the Trophy.
You're going to learn very little if anything at all by canvasing the VZW employees and retailers. They can (and often do) lose their jobs for letting information out. And since they often do leak, they are often kept more in the dark than those of us who know how to use Twitter.
I just had a nice chat with Lachelle at Verizon Wireless. I voiced all of the concerns I've had, blah blah blah.
Among the things she said:
1. We can't give out release dates for our phones because it affects our competitiveness. My response: You announced on Feb 11 that you were going to carry iPhone, release in a month. You gave a month notice, and you launched on time. How competitive are you on this platform if you're the only major carrier in the world (with supported language) that doesn't have a phone on the platform? You have like 47 different Android models, but not everyone wants Android.
2. I will pass your comments on to our marketing department so they can look into whether we should carry this phone. My response: You WILL be carrying this device. You have made a special offer to Microsoft employees, and have modified that offer at least 3 times that I can think of off the top of my head. A dummy device has been spotted in a Best Buy store, and I've seen pictures of it online (I forgot to tell her it is listed on bestbuy.com). Your store employees have been trained on it. Verizon branded devices have been seen in the wild (I forgot to tell her about the one on craigslist). You're on the edge of launching, and granted, all I've got are rumors, but the photographic evidence to back those rumors is overwhelming. You are frustrating your customers by keeping this so tightly under wraps. The whole world, except for Verizon employees it seems, knows that there is a device coming, and the lack of information is frustrating your customers. I stayed with Verizon, and gave you until the 12th, because the most powerful evidence of a launch seemed to point at the 12th, but I NEED the phone now, so today I became an ATT customer, and I'm talking to you on an ATT phone.
Anyway, she gave me the typical "I'm going to pass this up to marketing" blah blah blah and "thank you for your feedback because it helps us to keep our customers happy blah blah blah." She also said that the more they hear from customers, the more attention they can give this issue. WRITE THOSE LETTERS!
We'll see what happens. I'm kind of hoping, since there is a droid phone launching tomorrow, that it may be tomorrow, however that is just speculation on my part and I have no evidence to back it up whatsoever.

[Q] Will the government shutdown delay release of Nexus 5?

Has the FCC issued a final certification on the Nexus 5 yet? If not I'm thinking the release of the Nexus 5 (and many, many, other devices that require FCC certification) are going to be delayed since I doubt any work is going on at the FCC until the shutdown is resolved.
I believe it was already certified...

That's what I thought but can only find references that the FCC was in the process of certifying it, nothing that said they had completed the process.

"Washington: Device makers such as Google Inc. may have to delay introductions of new smartphones and other products because the partial US government shutdown halted certifications that the gadgets don’t cause interference...."
F*@%! That must be the reason we haven't heard anything about an announcement yet. I bet they were planning on announcing yesterday or today, and then releasing just in time for halloween. That would tie in with the whole kitkat candy thing.
I'm with you Google to obtain these certifications! Negociate with the authorities to launch the product asap.
Release on places other than the USA!
"President Obama has signed a measure averting a default on the nation's debt and ending the 16-day partial government shutdown"
The remaining certifications should be granted soon (I hope).

[ security discution ] Flaw Lingers in Samsung Phones, Illustrating Hacking Risk

Last fall, researchers at cybersecurity firm NowSecure found a bug in most Samsung smartphones that could allow hackers to spy on users.
In March, Samsung told NowSecure it had sent a fix to wireless carriers that they could distribute to users. It asked NowSecure to wait three months before going public.
Last week, the researchers bought two new Samsung Galaxy S6’s from Verizon VZ +0.89% Wireless and Sprint S +0.43%. They found both were still vulnerable to the security hole, which involves how the phone accepts data when updating keyboard software.
NowSecure CEO Andrew Hoog shared his version of events with The Wall Street Journal as his company prepared to release its research Tuesday. The story helps illuminate why hacking is so hard to stamp out.
That’s particularly true in smartphones, with its diffuse system of device makers, software programmers and network operators. Things likely are only to get worse as Americans connect their thermostats, door locks and cars to the Internet and face the need to update their software.
Samsung, Sprint and Verizon didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.
NowSecure’s Ryan Welton was scheduled to present his findings on the bug at a Black Hat mobile security conference in London on Tuesday.
The flaw shows how hackers can take advantage of software updates for nefarious purposes. In this case, Welton found he could hijack the process of updating one of the virtual keyboards Samsung installs on many Android smartphones. From there, he could eavesdrop on phone conversations, rummage through text messages and contacts, or turn on the microphone to capture audio.
That was possible, Hoog said, because Samsung didn’t encrypt the update process.
NowSecure’s story also offers a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes talks that often occur when a security company finds flaws in consumer software used by millions. The security firms generally give software makers time to fix the bug before going public.
In this case, NowSecure said it contacted Samsung in November 2014. On Dec. 16, Samsung asked for more time, Hoog said. On Dec. 31, it asked for a year to fix it, he said.
Hoog thought that was too long, reasoning that if his researchers found the bug, hackers would too.
The companies went back and forth until March, when Samsung said it had crafted a patch and had sent it to wireless carriers. They agreed the bug could be made public in about three months.
“We had some heartburn” over the delay, Hoog said. He said he does not know of any incidents where hackers exploited the flaw.
It was then up to the carriers to push users to download updates. That doesn’t always happen, or a user, running an old phone, may not bother.
NowSecure says it is yet to find a patched phone as of this week. Though “we still have to go to a T-Mobile TMUS -0.28% store,” Hoog said

I am guessing this is referencing the same exploit being discussed in the arstechnica website?
New exploit turns Samsung Galaxy phones into remote bugging devices
If so does freezing/uninstalling Samsung Keyboard 4.0 in Titanium backup be an effective stop gap measure considering I rarely use the default Samsung keyboard?
the problem samsung have a fix for this BUG but i dont know why samsung dont give this fix in an update are beter and the problem are fixed now perhaps wait to launche it with an M update ??? or an L 5.1 ?

**demand tmobile and samsung release blueborne patch**

Call, email, message etc both companies until they release a security patch for our phones. If enough of us call they will take notice and release updates. Be polite but firm.
calm down
No
I didn't mean to post 3 times. Not sure how that happened. But anyway my post is an outright demand over the blueborne patch. Samsung and T-mobile cannot just have a major Vulnerability sitting in the wild where people with the knowledge (and don't doubt that people can't figure out how to hack) can just get personal info off a phone. I have an almost 8 year old laptop that got patched from Microsoft. Why can't a two year old phone get a patch as well? It's been months
