Nexus 5 - Sleep of Death? Once going to deep sleep, phone dies. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I have been struggling with a problem the last few days, and have been reading quiet a lot. I got two old Nexus 5 phones, one had a broken screen, the other one had the display glitching problem - related to the flex cable. So I opened them and put a working one together out of both.
So far so good, everything seems to be working, with one exception: Once I press the power button, the screen goes black like its supposed to. If I wait long enough and try to wake the phone, its not responding. The only thing that helps is long-pressing the power button to hard reboot it.
So I did read a lot, about the power button malfunctioning and the batteries dying on the Nexus 5. I ruled out the power button problem and its working like it should. I ordered a new battery, which is not perfect, but has an estimated of 1800 mAh. I monitored the voltage of the battery with different apps, even logging them to see what happens right before the shutdown - but everything seems normal. So this could not be the problem either.
I am currently running the latest LineageOS, but I experienced the same problem running the latest factory image google released for the phone. I even tried different kernels. So I thought, it might not be software related. But since it always happened when the phone starts to enter the deep sleep , I tried to google some about this and found the SOD ( Sleep of Death ) problem for the Nexus 4. Since I was out of ideas, I installed an App called "SOD Killer", which creates a wake lock preventing the device from sleeping. Et voila - the problem is gone.
I could not find discussion on the internet relating to the nexus 5 concerning the sleep mode and the phone dying once it goes to sleep. Am I missing something here? The SOD Killer wake lock solution is a good temporary fix, but I would like to get to the grounds of this.
Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this strange behavior? Thank you in advance,
joha

What I forgot to mention is that once the phone is connected to a power source, the problem does not appear. That is also the reason why I wont get any logs via adb. ;p
I will try to get some logs with an APP and root once I get home - maybe there is some information about the problem causing this strange behavior.

I managed to get a log while the phone died when it wanted to activate sleep mode. But I am not that good in figuring out what in the log might be pointing in the direction of the failure. Any ideas?
I dont like the
Code:
09-21 12:11:51.977 E/BatteryStatsService( 786): no controller energy info supplied
parts in there. What might be the problem here?
Thank you so much in advance!

Does no one have any idea? I guess its hardware related somehow, when the phone tries to enter deep sleep. Anybody out there that knows, what the phone is actually doing when entering deep sleep which might be causing it to die / become unresponsive? Any idea is highly appreciated - I love that phone.

Weird Fuze Power Button Issue

I have been experiencing a periodic problem where the screen on my Fuze will be on, and it will not dim or go to sleep. Even if I press the power button it does not shut off. So the screen stays on completely and will, of course, eventually wear the battery down. While this is happening, it is not frozen - I can still use TF3D. The only way to get the screen to go off is to do a soft reboot, after which it will perform normally (including the power booting working like it should). This happens about once a day.
This generally seems to happen when the phone is charging. When I unplug it, the bar at the top still shows the phone as connected to the power. I also notice that the battery seems a little warmer than usual at the times when charging causes this to happen.
In searching the forum I found one other user who had this issue, but did not see any fixes. Coincidentally or not, that other user was using Blackberry Connect, which I am also.
Anybody else have this problem? If so, any proposed solution?
While I am at it, I have a Blackberry Connect issue as well. The phone will periodically (usually, but not always, in the middle of the night) just stop receiving Blackberry Connect e-mails, even though everything in the Blackberry software looks normal. Again, I need to soft reboot to fix it. If anybody has experienced this or has a solution, it would be helpful also.
Thanks in advance.
my button seams to have quit working all together, soft reset doesnt help, tryed the hard reset mabe im,doing it wrong. it never ressets data basicly has the same efect as a soft reset.
not sure if its a hardware or software issue at this point. it randomly pops up the are you sure you want to quit txt.
Battory compleatly drained overnight, put it on chager and power button works again. No settings where lost that i see, kind of rules out a hardware issue.

HTC Touch Pro power on button problem

Hi guys, I find this quite annoying and wish there is a mod for this. I don't know about other HTC Touch Pro owners but i find my fone quite sensitive.........it's "EASILY" turned on by a single "SHORT" press of the power button.
I didn't even hold it for 1 second, if i suddenly press or tap on it really quick, for not even a second, it turns on.
In case ppl don't understand and tell me that maybe my fone was on in the first place but just have the backlight off, and with a single tap on the power button, the backlight goes back on again. I knew that already. But what the problem really is, is that it's totally off, and when i tap the power on button, it turns on, i.e it vibrates and shows the welcome screen and all that other startup animation.
Is there a way to increase the delay of the finger-press on the power button? Coz it's so annoying that it gets turned on when i don't want it to, especially since this fone's weakness is that it hogs battery even though i've already applied tons of tweaks etc to lower the performance and increase battery life......
Oh and i have another problem, i find the signal kinda weak, is there a program or tweak to increase the signal?? Coz on my old phone Sony Ericsson W950i, the signal is great and I never have bad signal problems with it. But using HTC Touch Pro, i have this problem. This only happens when i'm at Uni, but it's not like they have bad reception or signal blockers there like how schools or colleges have. Just that when i'm inside buildings and there're tons of other buildings around, i can't send the txt coz of bad signals and it's bloody annoying, but using my W950i works fine.....
also I noticed that when i type a txt message using the hardware keyboard, it seems to fail to send most of the time, but only when i'm in UNI. But if i switch to the software keyboard, the one that you use ur fingers or stylus, then when i send the message it often works compare to using hardware keyboard.......any ideas?
Problem No 1: Try Touch Lock Pro
Problem No 2: Try to burn the newest RadioROM.
thx but i'm not trying to lock my phone, so i don't think TouchLock Pro is what i need.......
My Raphael turns also on after pressing the power button for a little few moment. With touchlock Pro you can prevent that you mistake your Raphael. I hope you can understand what I write in my "own" english
Ok so i've got it installed now and went through all the settings but couldn't find anything that can delay the power-on button press, I still have this problem. The app is a screen-lock app, there aren't any options regarding to power-on delays.......
plz tell me what settings etc to use.
I've never said that you can fix your problem with TouchLock Pro. With this you prevent to use your Raphael when you press your power button accidentally.
ya but that's only useful when my fone is on and it locks the phone but i'm trying to prevent my fone from turning on in the first place if i accidentally press the power on button for not even 1 second, because then it will turn on and i don't want that.
same problem here...the phone I thought I had turned off was back on, because accidently it got touched by something else in my luggage.
The only solution which to me is unsatisfactory, is to take out the battery so that it cannot power up.
C'mon...there has to be a better solution than this, no???

wow yay finally someone else other than me also report having the same problem, boy am i glad to know that i'm not the only one having this problem, i thought it was just something wrong with my fone and not all HTC Touch Pros....
i can't believe there aren't any results on Google, no forum discussions or solutions to this whatsoever. Also, nobody seemed to report this problem or come up with a solution on XDA as well as other forums i use like PPCgeekz or WMusers etc.........which is odd considering how this problem is quite annoying, that if u suddenly power on the fone by accident, it can drain battery life and god knows HTC Touch Pro has a crap battery life.............
I think that htc has done a bad job testing the powerbutton on the tp2.
There are some other things like weith, thikness and batterylife that could be improved but the powerbutton issue is realy a BIG bug.
Why they didn't make a slidebutton or a timeout between push and activation?
A dobble tap on the powerbutton could also be a solution.
The next rom shoold have a improvement about this button.
People, please react on the powerbutten problem so someone can fix this.
Thanx

Leaving the Touch Pro (Raphael) for some minutes without battery will stop the clock. So, when you put back on the battery and power up the device, the clock will display the wrong time. The time when you remove the battery.
This is hardware related.
Can produced different symptoms though.
Facts Behind the Power Button
If take a look at the inside of the powerbutton, there are 2 points making contact when you press the button. If you press it, the software will recognize this and the screen will turn off.
If you press it long enough you'll get the "QuickShutdown" message.
But, if water/alchohol/liquid gets underneath the button, the 2 points may be making contact, because water/alcohol conducts.
The button is very weak. Due to this, it may not properly work if you have used it for a long time.
As a result, despite the fact that you hit hibernate/sleep/suspend on the hardware power button = yes, the screen fades to black. But IT IS STILL ON. That explains the battery being drained.
Solution:
Open the phone hardware. Clean the power button connector manually.

i heart everyone talking about the sleep of death and to be honest, i havent really experienced this, but i definatley do have an intermitent power on and off button problem on my touch pro 2.
i read on some other forum that it could possibly be the slider that is casuing the problem. but to be honest, the button its self feels fine and looks fineand when i does work it works a treat. i havent had any water damage done to it what so ever. so im not sure , i am new too all this self help mobile stuff. so please excuse my ignorance. Ive doen the usual hard reset, button works for a few hours then calls it a day. soft rest, was working up until this week. i cant get ot to boot up again, while fiddling with the batter and a power lead. but the power button is so intermitent its driving me nuts. id be so grateful if anyone could shine any form of light on this. thanks in advance

auto - shutdown

Hello
I'm new here and still using the stock rom on my polaris
But lately, i'm having some strange problem: i lock normaly the device and press the power button (once and quickly) to shutdown the light on the screen (but keeping it working), to put it in my pocket. but sometimes, after like 1 or 2 hours, the device completely shuts down. but with no reason at all to do that...
my question is: something not correctly configured? some hardware problem? software problem?
i've serched the definitions menu & sub-menus and found nothing point to wrong configuration. (in menu: start>definitions>System>power>advanced i unchecked all the fields)
I've searched google and here and haven't found anyone with the same problem...
Does anyone here have an idea of what may be causing this?
thanks in advance for your help guys
Happened to me few times.
But I guess this happened to me: I have shut screen and put Polaris in a pocket.
Somehow I pressed Power for a longer period, and phone understood it has to shut down. Accordingly, it wrote question on display with Y/N buttons... and accidentally I pressed Yes.
Mind you, all the time Polaris is in the pocket...
This might not be what's happening to you...
yes, like you, my polaris spends most time in the pocket.
but i never saw the Y/N question on the display.....

Screen won't turn on after screen timeout

I've recently picked up my new Infinity and I've noticed that after the screen times out (I've set it to 30 seconds), it won't turn back on after I press the power button. Sometimes I have to press it numerous times before it will show the lock screen; other times, I've had to press the outer button down to reboot it.
Is anyone else having this issue or know what the issue is?
I have "same" problem and is driving me crazy. Did a cold boot, did a factory reset (through cold boot and through OS) - didn't help.
When my pad is in a locked/sleep state for longer time, it doesn't wake up anymore. It is draining battery as a sponge, but doesn't receive e-mails etc...so it could be it freezes or the wifi is off.
This problem is usually reported with a fact that one has enabled to turn off wifi when in sleep state (prime forums)...
My case:
- i had set wifi to never sleep
- i fiddled with build.prop and i think only after that the problem emerged (i mention this because there is a setting about sleep/wifi thing)
- i have restored orginial build.prop
- i have tried to set wifi to turn off in sleep
- i switched back to never sleep
- i coold boot, factory reset
Nothing helps anymore.
It is better with the Power Fx widget i think.
It happens less regulary, but it still does and I also don't know what else to do.
Some are reporting there is a bug in 4.0.3 ICS - but i don't know.
I think this is not a HW issue, and i refuse to do so
Hopefully JB update will solve this, too.
BTW: as i mentioned in my other topic on this matter, i am pretty surprised that factory reset didn't change my bootanimation and some other stuff on the system folder. Because of this fact i think factory reset will not help with this problem as it seems it leaves some things intact, which could also mean that if there is something wrong with SW it just doesn't overwrite/change it and that's why the problem is still here (broken file, changed file, cache...i don't know).
If this problem persist for a week or so and if there is still no JB update i will probably just go and install the latest update manually, which i think should overwrite all files. But, not sure.
Please if anyone has any idea on what is going on....
I have this same issue. It usually occurs after long periods of being idle and I pick it up to use it, hit the power button to wake it up, and it just doesn't wake up.
I have to hold the power button + vol down button to restart it.
Sometimes it'll happen when I just put it to sleep too or after short idle periods.
It's somewhat embarrassing when in public using it and randomly have to reboot; it also did it once when I was in class taking notes, thankfully SuperNote saves as I go.
Any ideas what the cause is? I'm only rooted, no custom recoveries, ROMs, kernels, etc. I'm running the stock ROM .26

[Q] NS4G - power button stuck

Last night I noticed that pressing the power button on my phone no longer did anything. Thinking that maybe the phone had somehow become frozen, I pulled the battery and put it back in. Much to my surprise, the phone came on all by itself without me having to do anything. It seems that somehow the power button got stuck in the "pushed" position even though I can still push it like normal.
I have managed to work around the issues for now thanks to some features of Cyanogenmod (I can now wake the phone up using the volume keys and lock by tapping a widget in the notification area), but I'm wondering what caused this and if it's something that could be easily fixed.
Has anyone else ever experienced something like this or does anyone know how I could go about fixing the issue?

Anyway, someone solve this problem opening the nexus s and manually cleaning the power button. Here a guide to open your device if you want to try:

Opening my ns and cleaning it did the trick for me. Worth a try, your warranty is void now anyway
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the info. I'll give it a shot when I get a chance.
