Dex Unexpectedly Works Using USB-C hub - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

THE GOOD:
I bought a USB-C hub (TOPGEEK USB C to HDMI 3-in-1 Digital Multiport Adapter on Amazon for $21.99, can't post the link on here) for my Chromebook Pro and it works great mirroring and extending the desktop on an external monitor. I figured I'd give it a shot on my unlocked S8+, and low and behold, it launched Dex from my phone without help from any 3rd party app, rooting the device, etc.!
THE BAD:
I can run Dex and have connected a USB keyboard/mouse combo, but this setup only works using the phone battery. As soon as I plug in the Samsung charger, it kills Dex and exits the app. I tried skipping the HDMI cord and just tried charging the S8, but that does not work either -- BUT, it will charge the chromebook. So I am confused as ever, and everything I've read on XDA, googled, YouTubed, etc. does not match exactly what I'm using or have setup, so it's hard to draw any conclusions.
Any thoughts of what could be going on? I'm tempted to buy another hub, but I don't know what to look for that would fix my problem.

Anyone have a suggestion of what to try next? I thought there'd be more excitement since I am not rooted, did not flash a custom kernel, etc. Just plugged in the USB-C hub and launched Dex directly.
Or am I missing something??? Nothing I've read exactly matches the case I've got right now...

It certainly is curious, but it still is Dex. - totally not interesting for 99% of the S8(+) Users. Plus it´s already achievable through custom Kernels.

For using Dex and charging simultaneously you can use the wireless charger free given by Samsung. Let me know if that works

Wireless charger offer still active?
Can anyone confirm for me whether Samsung is still offering the free wireless charger for new S8/S8+ owners? I have a new AT&T Galaxy S8+ and it does not have the "My Galaxy" app loaded on it. I also can't find it in either the Play Store or the Galaxy Apps store. Does anyone know if this offer is still being honored? I see a page about it on the Samsung website, but all the instructions talk about using the "My Galaxy" app to get the coupon code to claim one.
Thanks!

Has anyone tried to connect the S8 to a USB-C enabled display (that also possess a USB hub) to see if it would work (as the USB-C from the display should deliver power and data)

video out

this is probably a silly question but is this impossible?
somehow have a usb to svid lead and some software?
i forgot about sound.. could audio be run through miniusb also?
Well, while I can't say its IMPOSSIBLE, I can say its highly unlikely to exist.
The mini USB on these devices is designed only to be a slave port (meaning, it can connect to a host, such as a PC, but it cannot act as a host to other devices, such as a mouse or keyboard... the connected device needs to host it). That being said, the mini-USB wouldn't appear to have the capability on the surface.
I have seen mini-SD cards that use the SDIO interface to control a VGA output, but the problem with the Tornado is that the card slot is under the battery, making it impossible to have a wire sticking out to a screen. And even then, its not a "true WYSIWYG" video out, but rather the ability to show slides, such as powerpoint using their software.
Now, the reason I saw that its NOT impossible is because theoretically, I've already done something similar using a Media Center PC attached to my TV. I had a video on my phone that I wished to show someone on a bigger screen, so I plugged the tornado into the PC using the USB, and started WM5torage, which effectively made the tornado a mass storage device. Then, the media center PC played the video from my storage card on the TV.
While this may not be exactly what you had in mind, I think its possible (if someone were inclined to design it), to make a box that could pull off video files on demand from your device, and then output them to a svideo or RCA jack. It still wouldn't be a real VGA out, but it would sorta make you feel like you had an ipod video.
As far as audio, your device already has a stereo audio jack. You can plug that into a Television using a 3.5mm to RCA adaptor cable (similiar to the ones that sell for the ipod video), and then a 2.5mm to 3.5mm coming out of your phone (I did that once too, don't ask why...). Won't help with video though.
Some more information that is interesting to note:
-There ARE some windows mobile devices that have USB host capability, particularly the Toshiba pocket PC's of yesteryear. They allowed usb keyboards, printers, mice, flash drives, etc... to be connected to the port directly on the device. So, that would make what you are describing much more feasible. However, the Toshiba's also supports an expansion pack that included a VGA out, so you'd already be all set if you had one of those! too bad they haven't come out with a current device in a long time (there's some new ones on the horizon I've seen though).
-New Bluetooth specifications are being laid out that include protocols for transfer of video, much like A2DP is for audio. The problem is, much like A2DP for audio, there will most likely be many hurdles with compatibility, and it probably won't be so reliable even when working.
Good luck!
That would be pretty cool, to have something like "bluetooth audio/video distribution profile"

I'm pretty sure it will need BT 2.0's enhanced bandwidth to carry all that data smoothly, so either way when this comes out, we'll need to get new devices by then.
But yea, the concept IS cool... Bluetooth totally rocks when used properly!
inasmuch as i would like to believe that such a thing can be done, dishe's right. it is unlikely. theoretically, it possible - but the cost and hassle to create something like this would not be cost effective (and hassle-effective ^_^) for the inventor... unless there are reaaally generous people out there... sigh.
anyway, check this picture out. if this were real, that would make this the perfect phone (oh, and hot swappable SDIO... almost forgot about that ^_^)

A few ways do do this...
Run MyMobler via BT and use camtasia or windows media encoder to Live Screen cap the MyMobler window. Then Stream to any format and publish. You can also play out to webcam.
There was a miniSD video output cad you can get on ebay, but for some devices where the SD card is under the battery it wont work.
Lastly there is Comvu.com try thier cab it works well with wifi and 3g

Apple CarPlay Dongle - Autoplay - Not working correctly

Hello all!
I have bought the Apple Carplay Dongle with the app called AutoPlay. (https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B076D2BP4S) The App and the dongle have the newest version.
The problem is that the head unit will start completely new or the connection get lost to the device. I tried several devices (iPhone 5S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone X) - I also changed the lightning cable.
The usb from my device is working. Maybe I do something wrong?
I used a XTRONS, Android 8, Octa-Core, 4GB RAM, 32GB ROM device.
Some suggestions would be great.
Just curious, what did the reseller suggest?

The original adaptor appears to be made by Carlinke. They have a website of the same name - you should start there (sorry, I can't post external links yet).
I had to buy a USB splitter to get my CarPlay dongle to work reliably. A single USB port just wasn’t enough.
Now in the cold time of the year I have a problem with the dongle. The dongle is not connect over the usb to the android device. The app says that I have to connect the box. Is this normal? - After some time of driving it is working.
Now it is the problem that I have to restart my device to get the box recognized by the app. Did someone have some suggestions?

looks like you have the carlinkit dongle like mine, you may need to update firmware on box. I got the latest box firmware from alliexpress selleer ( as per time of this post )
install instuctions
1) format a USB drive as FAT32
2) place img file in root of USB
3) plug dongle into andorid unit ( do not put in USB yet )
4) open app
5) once app asks you to connect phone, plug in USB drive into dongle.
6) you will get message on app saying box updating.
7 ) finally check setting menu in APP to see box and software up to date ( you will need to be connected to WIFI for this I belive)
Thanks for your post.
Is it right that the latest version of app and dongle is from the end of december 2018?
I have the same box on a px5 android 6 and it keeps restarting/disconnecting when I use a navigation app like google maps. I tried using 2 usb ports for extra charge, different phone, cable, etc.
nothing works
Yes, for me it is the same.
I think there is also no update available since 4 months. I do not know why.

Question TB-J706F Need HDMI Output

Have any of you tried to connect the tablet to a monitor with a HDMI connection?
What adapter WORKS.
I have on the j716. My monitor has usbc input, that works fine, and I also have a cheap choetech USBC to hdmi convertor(I bought 3 years ago), also fine. I doubt anything special is needed. One thing I did find is zui 13 added more options, unless I failed to find them on earlier version.

P11 Pro TB-J706F.
Is there a setting I need to change before/after connecting the adapter and the TV? All I did was connect it to the tablet, then to the TV and got nothing on the TV screen.
I ordered a Xiaoxin Pad Pro TB-J706F but I don't have it yet, hope someone else can help you.
So I got my tablet and I bought an adapter and it works perfectly
It's called USAMS U22, paid it around 18$
Does it change the aspect ratio to 16:9?
No, it mirrors the screen, so it had some black bars all around, it was not bad but in my TV I can adjust the zoom vertical and horizontal so now I have no black bars.
In the post I linked previously it says it can be used as second screen with native resolution with some tinkering on adb but I did not try yet.
Also to answer @flhthemi I did not have to change any setting, when I plugged in the cable it asked me if I wanted the sound to go on HDMI or internal and it just worked.
This is the item but I bought it locally in a shop

Can you post the brand and model number please?
Brand: USAMS
Model: US-SJ282
Name: U22 Type C to HDMI 4K HD Adapter Cable(Female),15cm
There is also (I do NOT have this one):
Model: US-SJ281
Name: U21 Type C to HDMI 4K HD Cable(Male),1.8m
I bought it at a retail shop, online I found this in Aliexpress:
https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32960700912.html
even if it says it's not available you can check the details and maybe find another seller
@flhthemi I think you need to check what the one you bought supports because probably any USB C To HDMI Cable([email protected]) should work.
Edit 2
Looks like yours is 4k (3840x2160)@30hz
@MrCrayon Thanks so much for the info! I'm going to try and find one of these in a couple days as I'm out of town right now.
EDIT: Well this is strange...the adapter I had already bought, that didn't work, is now working. Mighty strange.
I used this Hub https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/1005003027956343.html?spm=a2g0o.9042311.0.0.f728b90apPwr7u and could connect to a TV/Monitor.
I bought a Steam Deck Dockingstation and my Lenovo just won't connect, a message briefly pops up about selecting an HDMI device but it constantly goes away and appears again.
Any suggestion?

Carplay - Phone that supports charging and OTG simultaneously?

Hi all,
I'm looking for the phone that allows charging and using OTG simultaneously. I have the Carplay adapter that can be connected to the android phone and I want to use it in my motorcycle as media dashboard. The problem I'm facing right now is that every phone I'm using doesn't support the charging. When I connect the power supply the communication with accessory stops and when it's disconnected the accessory is working again.
I was testing on Motorola G31, Samsung S10 and Pixel 2 XL. The adapter itself works fine as I was testing it on my Macbook and I can charge and use usb accessory at the same time.
If you know some phone that will work I would be greatfull for the recommendation. I prefer the usbc connection.
The second question I have which is way less important. Is there an custom rom that is very lightweight and allow just to run the application for the adapter to boot as fast as possible?
=====================================================
For anyone looking for simple answer I can confirm that Poco X3 is working fine, if you know other phones please add a post

Say what??? You're killing me.
Yes, of course there is OTG over USB 3 Type C.
You buy a (passive) adapter and it works, just like with micro USB 2.
Now you're going to ask me how.
I actually have a device that I build that switches dynamically straight USB vs OTG.
It's a 5.1k resistor from a CC to ground puts it in OTG.
Here's a video of two Androids hooked together with one being a "digitizer" and the other using it through a OTG adapter.
See: https://www.amazon.com/24pin-USB-C-Resistor-Black-Housing/dp/B07T97LC9L
I've found the youtube channel that shows that it's possible using Poco X3.
Here's an adapter I made for Type C. You can use it normally (with a straight micro USB cable) or as OTG with a micro USB OTG adapter.
And if you connect it to a 5 wire device that switches the micro USB ID, then it can do both alternately.
The black heat shrink hides a 5.1k resistor.
Oh, as far as PD goes:
Code:
# USB power role changes
on property:sys.usb.typec.power_role=source
write /sys/class/dual_role_usb/otg_default/power_role ${sys.usb.typec.power_role}
on property:sys.usb.typec.power_role=sink
write /sys/class/dual_role_usb/otg_default/power_role ${sys.usb.typec.power_role}
you should maybe read about USB-C and its protocols especially USB-PD.
oh I have one too, and it works. with custom kernel you can even charge on host mode.
smnc said:
USB-C devices don't use USB On-The-GO (OTG) like the older devices discussed here, instead they use something called Dual-Role-Mode/Dual-Role-Devices (DRD).
Whereas USB-OTG host/client was determined by hardware; DRD uses context to determine the host/client devices, which needs to be implemented in firmware/software/logic.

@smnc if I would reply to you I would have mentioned you. I just quoted your post from another thread.

Have a good evening.
Yawn.
Of course there is no "OTG" in Type C.
But if somebody wants to use a regular USB A plug of a keyboard/mouse on their Type C device they just buy an "OTG adapter".
USB Type-C plugs associated with the “A” end of a legacy adapter cable are required to have Rd (5.1 kΩ ± 20%) termination incorporated into the plug assembly – see Section 4.5.3.2.1.

Someone Logged into my stolen phone!!!

So someone decided to steal a broken phone belonging to me. The screen was smashed & im pretty sure it wouldn’t turn on, I couldn’t feel it viberate when powering on, but unsure if even powered.
Now since then I logged into the Google account & seen the device was active yesterday on a known network, I couldn’t see the name.
No SIM cards or sim tray in the phone for mobile data.
Passcode to enter the phone was my name.
Is it possible that someone powered the phone on with the broken screen there for it connected to a known network? Even possible to power on a phone with. Broken screen? Phone need to be unlocked to connect to Wi-Fi?
I am dumbfounded.

Yes it's doable. See what free legal avenues are available to you where you are. I would leave it be as such until you do that. Best if you can find and prosecute the offender. Hammer 'em.

no need for screen unlock to connect to known wifi. it's possible to mirror screen to tv and control phone with mouse and keyboard, though

There's lots of sites saying that if it supports USB 3.1 then it supports video.
OTOH, Qualcomm has tons of USB 3.1 processors and DisplayPort alt-mode only came in on the SDM835, SDM845.
I've tried using an HDMI adapter on my SDM636 (USB 3.1) and it doesn't work.
I've no idea if the adapter converts from DisplayPort to HDMI or whether it uses HDMI alt-mode.
