Phone doesn't detect SD cards - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I've run into a rather interesting issue with my FRD-L04. My bootloader is unlocked and I'm running stock B385 with TWRP. No matter what I seem to do, the phone doesn't pick up any of the multiple SD cards I have.
EDIT: I've had a breakthrough!
The SD card appears to function ONLY IF the SIM card isn't in the tray. What on earth?
My SIM card was manually cut down from a full size one but I didn't think it would cause any problems. If I take out the SIM card and put the tray in with just an SD, it reads it completely.
I think this might have something to do with my SIM card being really old?

I was previously testing an early version of RROS on the phone but quickly made my way back to stock nougat, but somewhere in the process my SD card slot may have lost functionality. I don't think I'm able to run the marshmallow rollback process if my SD card isn't detected. TWRP doesn't let me mount any of the cards I have.
I've tried using the DLoad method for the rollback package and it failed at 5%. I don't think it detects the card at all.
Is there something I can try to do to make the SD card slot work again? I'm formatting my SD cards in the appropriate format (Fat32). I have a 16GB Lexar 300x and a 2GB MicroSD card from Samsung, neither work.

That is weird, try to format them with your computer and use exfat. See if that does anything  do slow format as well if you have Windows. Not quick format.

You are also able to run the roll back packages if you make a dload folder in the root of your honor internal storage. :victory:

I just tested exFAT and it also didn't work on either card. A friend of mine just got the same phone and his SD card can even be accessed through Windows while the phone is plugged in, this never happens for me.

When did this start to happen? Do the cards work in another phone?

The cards work in every other device except this Honor 8. It may have started happening when I switched from B360 to RROS and then back again, but I don't think I've ever seen them work on the phone, even with EMUI 4.1. I get no prompts or information in the files manager, just 32GB internal storage.

If you never have seen it work I would take it to a service center and have them look at the sd card reader :/ maybe someone with more experience than me with this matter could help you on the forms if you don't want to do that.

If the update process in recovery even reaches 5% it means the phone detects the card with dload inside it. I'd recommend u to try and rollback and see.

I've partially figured it out - It's clearly something to do with my SIM card. The phone will 100% recognize any SD card as long as the SIM is out, if the SIM is inserted it immediately disconnects the SD card.
My SIM card has storage on it for contacts because it's from around 2008 or 9. Should I try getting a new sim card and see if that fixes the problem?

May be you should Service centre. It may be hardware issue now but may worsen later so better to send it now or ask for a refund if it is still less than 10-15 days of purchase

The phone is 9 months old, I doubt it's still serviceable. I'm going to try upgrading to a new SIM card and see if it makes a difference
EDIT: I just reflashed the stock recovery from B360 via fastboot, and then ran the OTA for B388. The "quick update" failed so I chose "download full package" during the install as it worked with my previous update from B360 to B385.
It installed, and when the phone rebooted, my bootloader was relocked. It relocked itself via the OTA.
This also fixed the SD card issue.
I don't even know how that works. I should lock the thread somehow I suppose!

If you have any further issues. I'd recommend that your contact Honor directly as they should be able to help you resolve your issue quite easily.

Following today's system upgrade my SD card won't mount

I've had my Idol 3 for a couple of weeks now and I just love it . . . so do my 'green' friends! However . . .
My Idol 3 got a major upgrade today, and now the phone won't permit mounting of the SD card . . . home of many apps!
The option under Settings/Storage is not greyed out, it's just that when I tap 'Mount SD card' nothing happens. I'm also getting a continuous notice, i.e. "SD card safe to remove".
The card was not removed either before or after the upgrade, but since I have had the above problem I have done reboots, restarts and hard reboots, and and have removed and replaced the card a couple of times . . . . I'm at a loss on this one!
Does anyone have any suggestions that will help me get the SD card mounted please?
Many thanks!
Just maybe a very strange coincidence here. I have been using the same 32gb sd card since I bought this phone and never had a single issue with the card or the phone (related to the sd card). This morning I checked to see if there was an update, I did not download or install it (since I'm rooted) but man ever since that moment I have been having f-ed up sd card issues. The same types of problems with it randomly unmounting the card and telling me the card is safe to remove, finding the card unmounted and touching the Mount button does nothing and just now I removed the card and my Chromebook is asking if I want to format it... WTF?
All this makes me wonder if Alcatel secretly installed some updates in the background today even though I did not intend for a system update. Hmmm.
I had similar issues with a sandisk microsd.....with it randomly losing everything on the sd....I switched to a samsung microsd and the issue went away so I think it's just very picky with the cards and you should try different manufacturers...also fat32 seemed more reliable than exfat. Samsung and Adata are two I had good results with outside sandisk which I previously considered the gold standard.
Thanks folks.
At this time I don't think it's an SD card issue unless the update corrupted it.
I mean, it was fine before the upgrade guvnor!

Backup the data to pc...format the card in the phone...copy the data back.
Same happened to me on the first OTA update and on this OTA update. I took my SD card out, put in a computer, copied all my files to a desktop folder, re-formatted the SD card, moved all my files from the desktop back on to the SD card once the format was complete and the phone mounted the card no problem. Total PITA and will consume about an hour and a half of your time to do all this. Not sure why this keeps happening on OTA updates, but next time, if Alcatel releases another OTA update, move all your apps back to the phone and remove your SD card prior to initiating an update. Only think I can think of?
Thanks both. Formatting is apparently the only way to go except that my computer wouldn't read the card via the phone.
Soooooo, I have mounted the micro SD in an adapter, and the card is currently being copied to my computer.
I'll let you know how that goes after I've done the format and copied things back.
Maybe just removing the SD card prior to an upgrade will prevent corruptions, or do you think that the upgrade 'needs' the SD card in place?

As the external sd is considered "optional" there is no reason you can't pull it prior to doing an upgrade to eliminate the chance of it getting corrupted.
If you have TWRP flashed and your situation is like mine was you'd find IT could read the card just fine and adb access while in TWRP copied off the data for me so seems related to the actual rom.
The solution
As some of you may have expected, and suggested, I was able to resolve my issue by . . .
1 Backing up the data on the SD card
2 Formatting the SD card
3 Copying my data back to the SD card
However, the .android_secure folder on the SD card was 'locked' by the phone, so I removed it and using Windows Explorer I copied the contents - all my apps that had been moved to the SD card - manually.
If you go this route yourself, your 'favorites' that you dragged to the home screen will be missing, so you'll have to re-do that process. It only takes a matter of minutes.
I want to thank those of you who responded with suggestions that pushed me all the way to the top of my 'success' mountain. The view is great!
Now if only the upgrade hadn't corrupted my SD card in the first place. Grrrrrr!
However, for those that don't realize it, the Idol 3 is a terrific phone that is soon to increase in popularity and recognition.

You might consider installing syncthing and running it on the pc and phone...it uses p2p technology to sync folders between devices....open source version of bittorrent sync. Glad you are back up and running.

"SD Card safe to remove" "Preparing SD card" over and over again.

Hi fellows, sorry to bother you i always try to manage to solve all problems on my own (researching) but there no info on the subject.
A bit of history: im the happy owner of an MT7-L09 since last month. I bought it with a Sandisk Ultra 32gb micro sd class10. I've been using the phone without any problems. Didnt even tried to root it.
What i actually did was to set up the SD card as a the default memory location. I dont actually really know what this does apart from saving all media in the SD (mainly google play music, photos and videos i shoot with the camera, some big obb files, etc).
Last week i downloaded oficial Lollipop 5.1.1 release and did a manual update. All good, i kept on using it without any problems (aside from considerably lower battery life) for a couple of days.
Then i decided to gain root access. I followed this steps after googling for help.
I gained root access but after this, it keeps looping between "sd card safe to remove" and "preparing sd card" as long as my sd card is in its slot.
After that i:
Got SD card out, used a PC to backup contents (no damages), gave it a quick format in windows fat32, then format in android. PROBLEM WAS STILL THERE
Then i went back to the pc and gave the card a slow full fat32 format, then format again in andoird. PROBLEM STILL HERE
I also recently bought an action cam with the same SD model. Got that one out and placed it straight into the phone replacing the other. SAME TYPE of SD HERE, SAME MODEL. PROBLEM PERSISTS.
I think it might be related to flashing a recovery or something like that while i had my sd card as default memory location. I really dont know what to do to ger it read any of my SD cards again.
Shall i flash original kit kat firmware again? maybe 5.1.1 again and loose root access? I couldnt find any information regarding this issue rather than try another SD card which i already did (the problem surfaced after the process of gaining root access).
Any clues?
Thaks

I just started having this problem today. I have been on the official 5.1.1 since it launched and never came across any issue until this morning. I never ever rooted or flashed anything custom and the boot loader is still locked.
As of today I started having this issue, looping between "SD card safe to remove" and "Preparing SD card" however I am able to access the SD Card and intervals. The SD Card works perfectly fine on any other device.
One thing I changed recently (2 days ago) is the default memory location, I set it to SD Card, so I am going to revert that setting back to Internal Memory and see if it fixes the issue. Thanks for the tip
If anyone else has come across this issue and/or knows how to fix it please help
UPDATE: I tried reverting the default location setting back to "Internal storage" and found that the setting had already reverted back automatically, presumably because the SD Card is not always available So no luck with that. I am starting to suspect it's a hardware issue!
UPDATE 2: I left the SD Card in the device and connected it to the PC in order to take a backup using HiSuite. As soon as I plugged it in the error stopped cropping up. I finished the backup, unplugged the USB and so far the "SD card safe to remove" and "Preparing SD card" did not show up again. It's been over an hour now. Yesterday I plugged in the device to my PC in order to copy some pictures so something may have happened at that point I'm suspecting.

Mine is still steady after a few days, hope you fix yours too [emoji6]

Solved. It must be some issue caused by HiSuite. I connected, made full backup, safely extracted SD from computer and problem seems to have ceased.
Thanks

I got this problem today after reflashing stock recovery.
It disappears after remove and reinsert sd card, but after a reboot problem was still there.
Now I solved checking debug usb setting, because after recovery flash it has been disabled itself.
I have this problem but with the USB storage device, I bought a new one which has two plugs, one is usb the other is micro, to transfer from laptop to phone without cables. It works on PC, it works on my husband's Huawei Mate 7, but just loops on mine. Other USB storage work fine on my phone with cable, but this new one just loops "preparing to connect" and " USB removed", even when trying to connect with cable.
All software is up to date, no modifications have been made.
Any simple ideas would be appreciated (I'm not into flashing/rooting etc!)

Z5 No external SD after Marshmallow [NOW WITH FIX]

Morning all
I updated my Z5 to MM 6.0, and i am no longer able to access my external SD card. Card is a Sandisk Ultra 32Gb CLass 10
It was NOT set up as shared storage before the update, and worked fine before the update.
I have taken the card out of the phone and re-inserted it to see if it'll detect it, but that restarts the phone and still does not show.
I've also taken the card out and put it in a card reader on my laptop, contents show fine as they were before the update, and even tried formatting to exFAT to see if it would detect it, but the phone still does not see it.
Is there a fix for this? I'm a bit annoyed at this, and will be thoroughly pissed off if it won't come back as i use it for camera and music storage to keep the phone memory as clear as possible.
EDIT: NOW A FIX
See post #16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66090631&postcount=16
I got the same problem, but finally I found that my SD card path changed to /storage/D8F7-09FA, It makes some App can not find SD card, I think it's a bug in the new OS.

My SD Card is now named 2885-BD47 but I still am able to access all content
At least via File Commander and also via Gallery and also games...
Same problem here. In addition, I could not delete anything on the card through File Commander nor format the SD card in the android storage setting (got some sort of partition error). I also connect the card to PC through phone (with card inside the phone and set to MTP) and the PC could "delete" it but the files are actually still there after that when I open them through phone. I don't have a card reader with me at the moment so can't try that. The card was working fine before I upgraded to MM.
I reformatted mine after it was causing the phone to crash after the update. Try normal fat32 and make sure it's an active partition

Done that this morning, still no joy. Reads fine in a card reader, just not in the phone.
Oddly, it does not show at all like DMC_UNIVERSE post, i've been through all the folders and nothing shows with the contents of my SD card.
Really annoyed now
Sony have advised me to try the Software Repair via the Companion software. Still not working, and i've lost all my data. Now have to set up the phone from scratch again!!!
This is a Marshmallow issue, not a Sony one. It happened to me on my Nvidia Shield Tablet after it got the MM update too...

Connect the sdcard to the pc with sdcard usb adapter or reader. Try to wipe its contents, format it with default settings, select quick format. (backup whatever u need first).. After thats done insert the sdcard in to the phone and format it using the phone format sdcard option in settings>storage.
If for any reason after you reinsert your sd card back in to the phone all the contents on the sd card are still there, then simply put.. Your micro sd card is defect. Throw it out and buy a new one. Lol. This is alsoa common problem with sandisk ultra micro sd cards. Sandisk even admit it in a forum i read once, cant remember the link im afraid. But a simpke google search is your best friend for that .
Hope this cleared a few things up for u

Oh something i forgot to mention, if any of you have a custom recovery and rooted device, try this, (as it could be possible your device had put a protection/lock on the sdcard). Try to format the micro SD card within the Custom recovery instead if it doesn't work from within the settings menu.. you'll also have a bit more detail as to whats going on with the card. If custom recovery fails to format the card, then the card is literally defect. Buy a new one

I'm not sure as to what the MM update has to do with it, It could just be coincidence that your MicroSD card just happen to become defected at the time of the update...
although it seems like too much of a coincidence.. there is only 1 way to be Exactly sure, that it aint your MicroSD.. If you have any data on the card that isn't important. Then try this and post back your results....
1. Insert the microSD in to your MicroSD adapter or card reader on your PC..
2. Try to format the SD card within windows either as eXFAT or FAT32 (Try both) Inserting the card back in to the phone after each Format with both File Systems
3. Check the SD card in files within your phone with a file explorer and see if the Data on your SD card is STILL there, If it is.. The Card Is Defect/Damaged/Corrupt etc..
4. If all the data is gone, Then navigate to your Settings>Storage>Format SD CARD (using the phone/device to format it)
Let me know how you Go..

There have many threads and discussions on the sandisk forums with many people having the same issues with these csrds.. Some people even bought 4-5 of them and had to send them all back to sandisk and get them replaced with working cards.. Apparently these cards do not handle being formatted too many times all that well.. Infact, people have been claiming that when they format it once or twice the card still works fine. Then after the 4-5th time, they just give out and just stop working all of a sudden.. Here is the link to the forum
http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...sk-Ultra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/td-p/284884
One user claims he used this method and it seemed to have fixed the problem.

I had the same problem as everyone else here on the forum. Nothing worked but this.
You have to format the card using Windows Command level option;
1. Run and type "cmd"
2. Then type; "format L:"
3. Get a cup pf coffee and relax
*
Notes
** L = your sd card drive letter
** don't use quotation marks
** there is a space between format and the drive letter
------------------------------
Give that a try and let me know how it goes..
Good luck guys..
EDIT: I am infront of my PC now, so I am going to try format it this way through CMD PROMPT (aka MS-DOS), and because its a 64GB card, it will take a little bit of time.. So far it's been going smoothly and it's at 13% (roughly 1% every 45sec - 1min 10sec).. It must be doing a thorough format rather than a quick format.. Let's just wait and see if all ends well..
I Will post the results / outcome once format is complete and after I test it in one of my devices..
Edit: no good.

ReEdit:: Well, the good news is, my marshmallow Z5 detects and accesses my 32GB card with proper file pathing, rw access etc..
Maybe taking your sdcard out while updating to MM could have prevented a file pathing corruption, renaming.
But @ the person who's sdcard just stopped working altogether, but you're card done for man. Funny thing is, its mainly sandisk cards. I'm not a fan of sandisk, they are too unreliable IMO..
Right, after a lengthy formatting session using windows and CMD prompt, neither worked (exFAT or FAT32).
I downloaded SD Card Formatter as suggested by this post http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...tra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/m-p/285302#M1787, and tried formatting with this (link to format tool: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html).
I tried 3 times with this, the only option that worked was to use the FULL (OVERWRITE) option within the software. Took a while, but once done, the phone discovered the card when it was inserted back into the phone. It is now recognized by all apps, and for good measure, i ran a format of the SD card from the phone's storage options in the settings menu. No prior contents showing, so all is good.
I've since copied the contents back onto the card, and they are now visible.
Thanks guys for your help!

Glad to see you go it sorted out and working mate..
Just something to remember for future reference, windows disk manager wont allow formatting anything bigger than 30GB to fat32.. You need to use a program like easeus partition master when doing so..
But im sure you're already aware of that .
Anyway. Glad you got it sorted anyway mate..
Well, i tried again using the tool provided in the link. Its a no go. The card is a dud.. I hate sandisk devices i tell ya.. Lol
same happened to me also the Play Services error, ended up reformatting the sd and clean install MM, all workin great now
i found a solution to your problem
try formatting your sd card to ur other phone and try it again on your z5
just sharing my knowledge hope it work

SD Card Corrupt or Unsupported ??

Hi guys
I know threads on here like this don't get many replies on here but i thought it was worth a shot....lol
I've been using a Toshiba SD card in my S5 for a few weeks and i was using it as adopted storage the a 50/50 mix.
I'm now trying to use it in my S7 but i either get an error saying that its corrupt or that its unsupported and that it need to be formatted.
Every time i try a format it it just give an error.
I have tried formatting the adopted partition in the S5 and then doing a full format but i still get the error.
Ive also tried formatting it on my PC (using the built in format utility, GUIformat , formatter and running a few chkdsk commands but everything checks out ok.
The PC reads and writes to the card perfectly and if i put the card back in the S5 it works as it should.
So it seems like its just the S7 that's having problems with it.
I know its the a hardware fault with the S7 as i can use other SD cards in it, its just this 128gb one that im having problems with.
Any ideas how to fix it?
Anyone ?
Update.....
I've tried a low level format and also formatting it with sdformatter but it still wont work in the S7.
Any ideas ?
oh well , like i said it was worth a shot....lol
I think its time for me to find another forum

I didn't even know Toshiba made SD cards. I assume it is a class 10? If you were using it in your S5 how old is it?

Thanks for the reply (ive not had many on here)
Its a class 10 U3 like the one here:
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDX...-SDXC-4K-Card-with-Adapter-UHS-I-U3----90MB_s
It wrks perfectly in the s5 and on my PC, its just the s7 that's having problems with it.
I'm thinking its got to be something to do with making it an adoptable (50/50 mix) sd card in the s5 that's caused the problem but i thought formatting it would have fixed it.

I have seen other people have this issue but there is no reason why adoptible storage would have anything to do with it. It is just your OS using your SD card in a certain way. The SD card really doesn't care. So you can't format it from the phone, right?

Best I can tell. As long as you format it from your computer in FAT32 format it should be able to be read. If it still can't be read it is probably a firmware issue with the phone and that SD card.

Thanks again
I was just thinking that it could be the encrypted partition thats created when doing the 50/50 mix that could be causing the problem as that would only be able to be read in the S5 (although i have tried formatting the card in the s5).
If i format in in say my PC and then put it in the S7 it pops up saying something about the sd card being in a unsupported filesystem and that it need to be formatted, if i let it try and format it, i then get an error saying volume partition disk:179,64 public' failed with '400 command failed, and the card then shows as corrupt. if i then try and reformat it again i just get the same error.
Here is another thread on the same error: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/help/sd-card-error-format-t3311030
If it were me I'd just call it a day and spend $40 to $100 on a shiny new sd card
Got similar problem
Ive took my phone from service - they replaced mother board. Now it doesn't read my microsd XC. But it can read two other microsd XC.
But before they replaced mother board it was able to read my card. And now my card works in EVERYTHING except my phone. I checked it in 2 PC, SGS7, SGS7EDGE, 3 different phones, 2 photo cameras. It works fine. Reading, formating, writing.
When im tring to format it in my phone it stops at 20% and then appears an error "command 'XX volume partition disk:179,0 public' failed with '400 XX command failed" where XX is incrementing value each try.
Any ideas?
I tried to use adb shell sm commands - no use.
Device Exinos SM-G930FD. Stock. Last Nougat update. No Root
Downgrade to Android 6 got no result.
Have the same problem with my Samsung 64gb Sd card in Galaxy S7. Card was previously encrypted and shows now as broken. Reformated on PC using DISK PART. Visible in S7 but after fotmat and restart still broken. Looks like S7 is destroying large SD cards if you encrypt it.

Hey, guys. I have an S7 Demo Unit which I bought back in October. One of the first things I tried after buying it was to insert my working Kingston 16Gb Class 10 Sd card but it didnt recognize it, no messages at all, so I thought the sd card slot was damaged. A few days ago, I bought a really cheap phone just to receive calls, and it came with a 2Gb sd card, so I just gave it a try and inserted it into my S7, and I was surprised to see that the phone warned me that the card was unsupported, I went ahead and tried to format it but received message "command '11 volume partition disk:179,0 public' failed with '400 11 Command failed". The weird thing is that the two sd cards work great on other smartphones and PCs at home and even if I put whichever card in the S7 via an sd adapter as USB on the Go they work perfectly fine. I've tried several things to format it and get the cards to be read on tje phone but to no avail.
Do yoy know if this has to be something with software on the s7 ?? I have read that this happens on some Moto X also.
I have the same issue on my S7 with Toshiba SDXC card 64GB. Tried to search for a solution but couldn't find.

corrupted sd card but PC sees it just fine

So, about the problem. All was fine untill a few hours ago. My note 10 notified me that my SD card is corrupted. OK, no biggie, lets just take it out and put it back in. Worked before, but not today.
Tried the same SD card in my laptop, worked without any problem. I'm feeling trolled. Next i tried with otg sd card adapter. It says "no supported partition was found".
Next, tried another SD card, still nothing. Tried that one with otg - bam, works. So, it's not card that's bad. Tried another one, was empty so i formatted it on phone. Nope - still corrupted. No matter how many times i formatted it, it's always corrupted.
But it works on laptop. All 3 of them work on laptop. Two of them i can see with otg, the one that was all the time in the phone says no supported partition.
Then i thought, maybe the sd reader in phone broke. Rebooted to recovery and guess what? First SD card that showed corrupted message works just fine in recovery. Now, one reset to factory setting would probably solve the problem but i have tons of apps that i'd need to backup and no space to do it because my sd card ain't showing in OS.
All i wanna know is am i doomed to reseting android or is there any trick i could use to avoid that?
Copy all things on your pc,format the SD Card in the Phone and copy all Things back to SD Card
nope, didn't work. had to reflash OS
