SD Card Corrupt or Unsupported ?? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi guys
I know threads on here like this don't get many replies on here but i thought it was worth a shot....lol
I've been using a Toshiba SD card in my S5 for a few weeks and i was using it as adopted storage the a 50/50 mix.
I'm now trying to use it in my S7 but i either get an error saying that its corrupt or that its unsupported and that it need to be formatted.
Every time i try a format it it just give an error.
I have tried formatting the adopted partition in the S5 and then doing a full format but i still get the error.
Ive also tried formatting it on my PC (using the built in format utility, GUIformat , formatter and running a few chkdsk commands but everything checks out ok.
The PC reads and writes to the card perfectly and if i put the card back in the S5 it works as it should.
So it seems like its just the S7 that's having problems with it.
I know its the a hardware fault with the S7 as i can use other SD cards in it, its just this 128gb one that im having problems with.
Any ideas how to fix it?

Anyone ?

Update.....
I've tried a low level format and also formatting it with sdformatter but it still wont work in the S7.
Any ideas ?

oh well , like i said it was worth a shot....lol
I think its time for me to find another forum

I didn't even know Toshiba made SD cards. I assume it is a class 10? If you were using it in your S5 how old is it?

Thanks for the reply (ive not had many on here)
Its a class 10 U3 like the one here:
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDX...-SDXC-4K-Card-with-Adapter-UHS-I-U3----90MB_s
It wrks perfectly in the s5 and on my PC, its just the s7 that's having problems with it.
I'm thinking its got to be something to do with making it an adoptable (50/50 mix) sd card in the s5 that's caused the problem but i thought formatting it would have fixed it.

I have seen other people have this issue but there is no reason why adoptible storage would have anything to do with it. It is just your OS using your SD card in a certain way. The SD card really doesn't care. So you can't format it from the phone, right?
---------- Post added at 09:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:03 PM ----------
Best I can tell. As long as you format it from your computer in FAT32 format it should be able to be read. If it still can't be read it is probably a firmware issue with the phone and that SD card.

Thanks again
I was just thinking that it could be the encrypted partition thats created when doing the 50/50 mix that could be causing the problem as that would only be able to be read in the S5 (although i have tried formatting the card in the s5).
If i format in in say my PC and then put it in the S7 it pops up saying something about the sd card being in a unsupported filesystem and that it need to be formatted, if i let it try and format it, i then get an error saying volume partition disk:179,64 public' failed with '400 command failed, and the card then shows as corrupt. if i then try and reformat it again i just get the same error.

Here is another thread on the same error: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/help/sd-card-error-format-t3311030
If it were me I'd just call it a day and spend $40 to $100 on a shiny new sd card

Got similar problem
Ive took my phone from service - they replaced mother board. Now it doesn't read my microsd XC. But it can read two other microsd XC.
But before they replaced mother board it was able to read my card. And now my card works in EVERYTHING except my phone. I checked it in 2 PC, SGS7, SGS7EDGE, 3 different phones, 2 photo cameras. It works fine. Reading, formating, writing.
When im tring to format it in my phone it stops at 20% and then appears an error "command 'XX volume partition disk:179,0 public' failed with '400 XX command failed" where XX is incrementing value each try.
Any ideas?
I tried to use adb shell sm commands - no use.
Device Exinos SM-G930FD. Stock. Last Nougat update. No Root
Downgrade to Android 6 got no result.

Have the same problem with my Samsung 64gb Sd card in Galaxy S7. Card was previously encrypted and shows now as broken. Reformated on PC using DISK PART. Visible in S7 but after fotmat and restart still broken. Looks like S7 is destroying large SD cards if you encrypt it.

Hey, guys. I have an S7 Demo Unit which I bought back in October. One of the first things I tried after buying it was to insert my working Kingston 16Gb Class 10 Sd card but it didnt recognize it, no messages at all, so I thought the sd card slot was damaged. A few days ago, I bought a really cheap phone just to receive calls, and it came with a 2Gb sd card, so I just gave it a try and inserted it into my S7, and I was surprised to see that the phone warned me that the card was unsupported, I went ahead and tried to format it but received message "command '11 volume partition disk:179,0 public' failed with '400 11 Command failed". The weird thing is that the two sd cards work great on other smartphones and PCs at home and even if I put whichever card in the S7 via an sd adapter as USB on the Go they work perfectly fine. I've tried several things to format it and get the cards to be read on tje phone but to no avail.
Do yoy know if this has to be something with software on the s7 ?? I have read that this happens on some Moto X also.

I have the same issue on my S7 with Toshiba SDXC card 64GB. Tried to search for a solution but couldn't find.

64GB micro sdxc "damaged", unable to format

So I've been looking around for help on this across various sites and I've had no luck fixing my problem.
I'm running the most recent CM10 nightlies, which I read might influence which formats the phone can read, and even after I formatted the card to FAT32 via the gui app and easeUS partition editor my phone still says my card is damaged. When I try to format it it just says "unmounting card" with the spinning circle and sits there, never unmounting and formatting like it wants to. I tried to mount/unmount and format in CWM, no dice. This card is brand new out of the package today so there's been no previous use or problems.
Am I just going to be unable to use this card while running CM10, would I have to go back to a TW ROM or stock to make it read correctly? It will show up on my computer when I plug it in and files transfer to it fine so I figure it's a problem on the phone's side. My old 16gb card from my DX works fine and that's what I'll use in the meantime but the space is dangerously low, hence why I jumped on this 64gb card when it was an Amazon deal.
If anyone has some insight or experience with this I'd really appreciate it, I'm guessing it's a problem with CM10 or I missed some tiny step somewhere but I've tried a lot and had no success.

What exactly is the partition editor you used, and why? The GUI program to format it to fat32 is sufficient...
I would guess either it's the card(what brand btw?) or the partition editor.

It's the "SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-064G-U46A", I've noticed a lot of GS3 owners have been buying something similar or the same.
I used EaseUS Partition Master as well as the fat32 gui program that's been circulating, sounds like you know the one, and while the format was successful the phone still sees the card as damaged and won't completely unmount the card when I try to format it like it says.
You try formatting it on a windows computer

That's there exact same card I got. Format it again with the gui but DON'T use the partition program. I guarantee that's what is messing you up.

Did you use the sd adapter to plug into the computer or you did it while it was inserted in the phone already? I did the latter, idk if buying an sd slot to usb would change anything.
I am having the same problem. I thought I had a bad card, so I sent it back. Now I am searching for a solution as well. I will give this a try later tonight.

Ah ok, looks like I'll have to buy an sd-usb plugin then.
Had the same issue on two different cards and eventually they said that they were an unsupported raw format. Called sandisk and they said there are a lot of issues with the 64gb class 10 cards and the SGSIII. I am on my third one. This one has been working almost perfectly. I often get a unmounting remounting issue with the card, but I am not blaming the card yet as ever since I flashed the cracked aboot I have been having odd issues. I am going to put my phone back to stock and start over here today or tomorrow.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I fixed it
I bought a multi-SD plug-in with USB, slid my card in there, ran the gui on the card, put the card back in my phone and it worked fine, the phone recognizes it. For whatever reason the card didn't want to format while it was in the phone despite my manipulations, so plugging the SD into the computer is crucial I think.
Thanks for the support guys.
I have done everything described here, and still have what the OP says. Card is not recognized, like its not even plugged in to the phone, is formatted as FAT32 and works in windows.

Well, I literally fought this for 3 hours, and finally I just deleted the entire partition and formatted the card in the stock ROM. Then I pulled the card and formatted with EaseUS partitioner as FAT32 and put it back in and it worked. Then I flashed back to CM10 and it still works.
How frustrating this is....

SanDisk ultra SD unsupported?

Just trying to set up my new phone and having some issues with the SD card. It had been previously used on another device and when installed it came up with an error saying this device does not support this SanDisk card. No problem I thought it would just need formatting. I've done this twice selecting the option to use as internal storage and yet I still get the same message when the format has been done.
Any advice please ?
Surely this device should be able to use the SanDisk ultra 64GB card?
Now getting an error message when trying to format saying something like 'command format unsupported' or something like that the message only flashes up then disappears

Z5 No external SD after Marshmallow [NOW WITH FIX]

Morning all
I updated my Z5 to MM 6.0, and i am no longer able to access my external SD card. Card is a Sandisk Ultra 32Gb CLass 10
It was NOT set up as shared storage before the update, and worked fine before the update.
I have taken the card out of the phone and re-inserted it to see if it'll detect it, but that restarts the phone and still does not show.
I've also taken the card out and put it in a card reader on my laptop, contents show fine as they were before the update, and even tried formatting to exFAT to see if it would detect it, but the phone still does not see it.
Is there a fix for this? I'm a bit annoyed at this, and will be thoroughly pissed off if it won't come back as i use it for camera and music storage to keep the phone memory as clear as possible.
EDIT: NOW A FIX

My SD Card is now named 2885-BD47 but I still am able to access all content
At least via File Commander and also via Gallery and also games...
Same problem here. In addition, I could not delete anything on the card through File Commander nor format the SD card in the android storage setting (got some sort of partition error). I also connect the card to PC through phone (with card inside the phone and set to MTP) and the PC could "delete" it but the files are actually still there after that when I open them through phone. I don't have a card reader with me at the moment so can't try that. The card was working fine before I upgraded to MM.
I reformatted mine after it was causing the phone to crash after the update. Try normal fat32 and make sure it's an active partition

Done that this morning, still no joy. Reads fine in a card reader, just not in the phone.
Oddly, it does not show at all like DMC_UNIVERSE post, i've been through all the folders and nothing shows with the contents of my SD card.
Really annoyed now
Sony have advised me to try the Software Repair via the Companion software. Still not working, and i've lost all my data. Now have to set up the phone from scratch again!!!
This is a Marshmallow issue, not a Sony one. It happened to me on my Nvidia Shield Tablet after it got the MM update too...

Connect the sdcard to the pc with sdcard usb adapter or reader. Try to wipe its contents, format it with default settings, select quick format. (backup whatever u need first).. After thats done insert the sdcard in to the phone and format it using the phone format sdcard option in settings>storage.
If for any reason after you reinsert your sd card back in to the phone all the contents on the sd card are still there, then simply put.. Your micro sd card is defect. Throw it out and buy a new one. Lol. This is alsoa common problem with sandisk ultra micro sd cards. Sandisk even admit it in a forum i read once, cant remember the link im afraid. But a simpke google search is your best friend for that .
Hope this cleared a few things up for u

Oh something i forgot to mention, if any of you have a custom recovery and rooted device, try this, (as it could be possible your device had put a protection/lock on the sdcard). Try to format the micro SD card within the Custom recovery instead if it doesn't work from within the settings menu.. you'll also have a bit more detail as to whats going on with the card. If custom recovery fails to format the card, then the card is literally defect. Buy a new one

I'm not sure as to what the MM update has to do with it, It could just be coincidence that your MicroSD card just happen to become defected at the time of the update...
although it seems like too much of a coincidence.. there is only 1 way to be Exactly sure, that it aint your MicroSD.. If you have any data on the card that isn't important. Then try this and post back your results....
1. Insert the microSD in to your MicroSD adapter or card reader on your PC..
2. Try to format the SD card within windows either as eXFAT or FAT32 (Try both) Inserting the card back in to the phone after each Format with both File Systems
3. Check the SD card in files within your phone with a file explorer and see if the Data on your SD card is STILL there, If it is.. The Card Is Defect/Damaged/Corrupt etc..
4. If all the data is gone, Then navigate to your Settings>Storage>Format SD CARD (using the phone/device to format it)
Let me know how you Go..

There have many threads and discussions on the sandisk forums with many people having the same issues with these csrds.. Some people even bought 4-5 of them and had to send them all back to sandisk and get them replaced with working cards.. Apparently these cards do not handle being formatted too many times all that well.. Infact, people have been claiming that when they format it once or twice the card still works fine. Then after the 4-5th time, they just give out and just stop working all of a sudden.. Here is the link to the forum
http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...sk-Ultra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/td-p/284884
One user claims he used this method and it seemed to have fixed the problem.

I had the same problem as everyone else here on the forum. Nothing worked but this.
You have to format the card using Windows Command level option;
1. Run and type "cmd"
2. Then type; "format L:"
3. Get a cup pf coffee and relax
*
Notes
** L = your sd card drive letter
** don't use quotation marks
** there is a space between format and the drive letter
------------------------------
Give that a try and let me know how it goes..
Good luck guys..
EDIT: I am infront of my PC now, so I am going to try format it this way through CMD PROMPT (aka MS-DOS), and because its a 64GB card, it will take a little bit of time.. So far it's been going smoothly and it's at 13% (roughly 1% every 45sec - 1min 10sec).. It must be doing a thorough format rather than a quick format.. Let's just wait and see if all ends well..
I Will post the results / outcome once format is complete and after I test it in one of my devices..
Edit: no good.

ReEdit:: Well, the good news is, my marshmallow Z5 detects and accesses my 32GB card with proper file pathing, rw access etc..
Maybe taking your sdcard out while updating to MM could have prevented a file pathing corruption, renaming.
But @ the person who's sdcard just stopped working altogether, but you're card done for man. Funny thing is, its mainly sandisk cards. I'm not a fan of sandisk, they are too unreliable IMO..
Right, after a lengthy formatting session using windows and CMD prompt, neither worked (exFAT or FAT32).
I downloaded SD Card Formatter as suggested by this post http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...tra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/m-p/285302#M1787, and tried formatting with this (link to format tool: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html).
I tried 3 times with this, the only option that worked was to use the FULL (OVERWRITE) option within the software. Took a while, but once done, the phone discovered the card when it was inserted back into the phone. It is now recognized by all apps, and for good measure, i ran a format of the SD card from the phone's storage options in the settings menu. No prior contents showing, so all is good.
I've since copied the contents back onto the card, and they are now visible.
Thanks guys for your help!

Glad to see you go it sorted out and working mate..
Just something to remember for future reference, windows disk manager wont allow formatting anything bigger than 30GB to fat32.. You need to use a program like easeus partition master when doing so..
But im sure you're already aware of that .
Anyway. Glad you got it sorted anyway mate..
Well, i tried again using the tool provided in the link. Its a no go. The card is a dud.. I hate sandisk devices i tell ya.. Lol
same happened to me also the Play Services error, ended up reformatting the sd and clean install MM, all workin great now
i found a solution to your problem
try formatting your sd card to ur other phone and try it again on your z5

I'm currently going through this sane issue this is very frustrating for me. I have 3 64gb micro sd cards that i bought that has been coming up as corrupted on my phone. 2 of them I bought on Amazon for $20 both sandisk, i figured since it's probably one of the fake sd cards that has to be the problem. This micro sd that I literally just bought from best buy is showing up as corrupted as well, i formatted it using the the android system rebooted my phone and the same thing occurred, i honestly didnt start having sd card problems until i updated to 6.0 I really just want to know why is this happening and is there any kind of fix to this.
My last resort is to go back to katana rom and try again. If that doesn't work then I'm either getting an replacement device ir a new phone

So I totally forgot that I post in this thread, to make a long story short it was something wrong with MM on my device where every memory card [except my old 16gb SD] instantly gave me a corrupt message, so what I did was downgrade back to LP to test my theory to see if it was my SD or MM and I've had 0 problems so far. Didn't get a corruption message the second the sd card was placed, i mounted and uncounted the sd card several times and had 0 problems. All my apps are linking with Link2sd effortlessly on my Samsung sd card I bought a few days ago, so I'm concluding that something went wrong with MM.

I was enjoying MM for the simple fact that I'm able to video call people. I had to test out my theory by placing my Samsung sd card that I formatted on my laptop, in my LG L70 running cm13 and had 0 errors. I also rebooted the phone to see if it'll corrupt after starting up like it did in my lg g Stylo and again 0 errors. I then switched my sanddisk sd that was in my stylo and put it into my L70 and no errors popped up. I then formatted my Samsung on my laptop and right when I placed the sd card in my stylo, BAM! sd card corruption, so at that point I knew it either had to be MM or my phone, the only strange think like I said was My 16gb I had since the Sidekick phone era worked flawlessly every time when I had MM installed.

That is strange.....I wunder if it is mm doing it..... What exactly is it in the operating system that's making it do that......also when you would format your SD card did you format it the same every time or did you mess a round with it and try FAT32 fat16 so on and so forth?...iv owned the l70 and the stylo and didn't have any problems....well I bricked both phones but no problem with the sd cards........ Are you making sure to unmount the SD card every time before you remove it?... I'm really curious now I would like to know what it is that was making it do that just for my own curiosity sake

I have no clue bro, I try to figure out why it was doing it in MM and not LP. I formatted both sd cards with their default settings and when I partitioned them I followed a guide to do it the right way.

Honor 8: SD-Card issues, Android 7.0

Hey guys,
a few days ago I updated the software of Honor 8 to Android 7.0. Yesterday I bought a micro SD and plugged it into the phone. The card shows up but the system claims its damaged. I used the option to format the SD card but an error occured.
It says:“command '17 volume partition disk:179:192 public' failed with '400 17 Command failed'“
I searched on the internet for fixes and tried to change the the file system of the SD at first. I changed from exFAT to FAT32 and now to ext4 but the same error message occurs every time so this does not seem to be the main problem.
The SD shows up in the DiskInfo-App but it says it is not mounted. So I tried to mount the SD via ADB or Terminal Emulator but without success. On PC there is an IllegalStateException and on my device there is an SecurityException when I try to mount it via console.
Does anyone have a clue or has experienced something similar? Maybe it is because of Android 7.0 or because I dont have enough permissions (root)?
Help much appreciated

From the sound of it you have a corrupt SD card
I'm on android 7 and have no problems with SD card
Is it normal that some SDs dont work on Smartphone and work on PC? I dont want to buy a new one straight-maybe there will be the same problem with a new one. First I would like to try some fixes
It depends on the SD card, the phone, and the reader on PC, but there can be some compatibility issues with faster cards (UHS-3) on older phones. The one I'm using in my Honor 8 now wasn't compatible with my old phone.
I'd suggest deleting the partition manually, re-partitioning it, and formatting it again. I've had some cards get messed up in my Raspberry Pi that were fine afterwards. You can use either Disk Management in Windows (Control Panel {View -> Large Icons} -> Administrative Tools -> Storage -> Disk Management) or something like MiniTool Partition Wizard (the freeware version works fine). Just make sure you delete the SD card's partition(s) and not anything else by mistake.
Thanks for the tips but it didnt work...
A few minutes ago I tested my microSD (Lexar 64GB) in a Galaxy A3 (Android 6.0.1) and it worked just fine. So I would say that the card isnt corrupt. Next up I tested the A3`s microSD (SanDisk 64GB) with my Honor 8 and it didnt even show up in the DiskInfo-App.
Both cards work as usual on the A3 and on PC and both have the same filesystem (exFAT).
I could only imagine that there is a factory defect with the SD-card slot or a software problem (Android 7.0 bug?).
Would a defect slot even show the card and fulfill the ADB and terminal-commands until an Exception occurs?
I dont know but I would trend to say its a software problem because of the permission Exceptions Im getting with the commands on my device.
I believe that Samsung (and Windows after Windows 7) has native support for exFAT. I am not sure that this is the case for the Honor8, but I haven't tried; I'm pretty sure it supports FAT32 though.
You should try to format the SD in FAT32. Not ext4, not ntfs, not exFAT.
On Windows, it doesn't allow you to format an SD in FAT32 if it is bigger than 32GB. Try the instructions here:

I tried FAT32 with the 64GB card and today with a 4GB card. They all worked on the Galaxy A3. My device always says the card is damaged and it needs to be formated. When the Pop-Up asks me to format the card and I click on it. The progression bar of the formating starts at 20% every time (it doesnt start at 0%) and cancels immediately and shows this kind of error every time:
“command '17 volume partition disk:179:192 public' failed with '400 17 Command failed'
The message keeps popping-up with every properly working card (the underlined numbers change from card to card) and nothing happens. After the error popped up the system doesnt even show that there is a (damaged) card inside. There seems to be a problem with the formating-process and the reading of the cards in general (formated the cards at the PC and in the A3).
How did you get to EMUI 5.0: official OTA, Charles method, TWRP? The first thing I'd try is going back to EMUI 4.1 and seeing if it works there. If it doesn't, it's probably time to contact Honor for a warranty claim. If it does work there, try updating to EMUI 5 again and see if it works this time.
Ich got it via the HiCare-App.
Ich looked Up the official page to rollback to 6.0.1 but a SD Card is needed somehow... Before I use some unofficial ways and may loose my warranty, I think I will ask for replacement.

Thanks for the very detailed answer.
It indeed looks like either a hardware failure or an issue with EMUI 5.0. If you have access to a USB OTG, you can potentially try to see if you can format/read the card from that; if yes, then the problem is with the slot, otherwise you can try to go back to MM using the USB OTG (don't know if it is accessible by the recovery though).
Having said that, as you suggested, I guess it's better for you to do a warranty claim and replace the phone.
I will have a look. I ordered a new one, which should come with Android 6 ex factory and an available Update I guess. I will try to Setup the SD under Android 6 and hope it will still work after the update.
I also have to admit that my phone behaves a little bit strange when there is a not readable/damaged card inside. For some reason there was a huge delay, when I tried to unlock the screen, at times. When I locked it and a second later I pressed the power button again - no special behavior. But when I waited longer (5-10 seconds were enough sometimes), the time to wake up the screen was ridiculously high. It took up to 5 seconds to wake up the screen (vs. less than a second) ,whether I used the fingerprint or the power button.
-> I searched for the problem for quite some time and voila -when I removed the SD the delay was unreproducible gone.
For some reason all my default ringtones are deleted as well but IDC anymore.
In a few days I get my new device and I'll share my experiences.. Thanks for all the advices
PS:If you have a unlock delay, try and remove your SD.
So I got my new device -fresh out of the box.
I plugged my SD card in and again the same error showed up. (At least it mentioned the brand of the damaged SD-card but maybe just because it's android 6)
I plugged in another working card and again the same error...
How high is the chance that two working cards on other devices do not work explicitly on this device?
So can anyone recommend a microSD (working on their Honor8) with 64GB ? (Available on Amazon maybe)
If this doesn't work, I see myself sending back the new device as well....
EDIT:It was definitely a defect of my two devices. I tried out the same SD in an Honor 8 at a public store and it worked just fine...
I have exacly same problem. Phone is getting hot and slow, when the card is inside. Moreover the phone does not read the card.... No idea what to do..
