Honor 8: SD-Card issues, Android 7.0 - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
a few days ago I updated the software of Honor 8 to Android 7.0. Yesterday I bought a micro SD and plugged it into the phone. The card shows up but the system claims its damaged. I used the option to format the SD card but an error occured.
It says:“command '17 volume partition disk:179:192 public' failed with '400 17 Command failed'“
I searched on the internet for fixes and tried to change the the file system of the SD at first. I changed from exFAT to FAT32 and now to ext4 but the same error message occurs every time so this does not seem to be the main problem.
The SD shows up in the DiskInfo-App but it says it is not mounted. So I tried to mount the SD via ADB or Terminal Emulator but without success. On PC there is an IllegalStateException and on my device there is an SecurityException when I try to mount it via console.
Does anyone have a clue or has experienced something similar? Maybe it is because of Android 7.0 or because I dont have enough permissions (root)?
Help much appreciated

From the sound of it you have a corrupt SD card
I'm on android 7 and have no problems with SD card

Is it normal that some SDs dont work on Smartphone and work on PC? I dont want to buy a new one straight-maybe there will be the same problem with a new one. First I would like to try some fixes

It depends on the SD card, the phone, and the reader on PC, but there can be some compatibility issues with faster cards (UHS-3) on older phones. The one I'm using in my Honor 8 now wasn't compatible with my old phone.
I'd suggest deleting the partition manually, re-partitioning it, and formatting it again. I've had some cards get messed up in my Raspberry Pi that were fine afterwards. You can use either Disk Management in Windows (Control Panel {View -> Large Icons} -> Administrative Tools -> Storage -> Disk Management) or something like MiniTool Partition Wizard (the freeware version works fine). Just make sure you delete the SD card's partition(s) and not anything else by mistake.

Thanks for the tips but it didnt work...
A few minutes ago I tested my microSD (Lexar 64GB) in a Galaxy A3 (Android 6.0.1) and it worked just fine. So I would say that the card isnt corrupt. Next up I tested the A3`s microSD (SanDisk 64GB) with my Honor 8 and it didnt even show up in the DiskInfo-App.
Both cards work as usual on the A3 and on PC and both have the same filesystem (exFAT).
I could only imagine that there is a factory defect with the SD-card slot or a software problem (Android 7.0 bug?).
Would a defect slot even show the card and fulfill the ADB and terminal-commands until an Exception occurs?
I dont know but I would trend to say its a software problem because of the permission Exceptions Im getting with the commands on my device.

I believe that Samsung (and Windows after Windows 7) has native support for exFAT. I am not sure that this is the case for the Honor8, but I haven't tried; I'm pretty sure it supports FAT32 though.
You should try to format the SD in FAT32. Not ext4, not ntfs, not exFAT.
On Windows, it doesn't allow you to format an SD in FAT32 if it is bigger than 32GB. Try the instructions here:
http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/manage-partition/format-64gb-sd-card-to-fat32.html

I tried FAT32 with the 64GB card and today with a 4GB card. They all worked on the Galaxy A3. My device always says the card is damaged and it needs to be formated. When the Pop-Up asks me to format the card and I click on it. The progression bar of the formating starts at 20% every time (it doesnt start at 0%) and cancels immediately and shows this kind of error every time:
“command '17 volume partition disk:179:192 public' failed with '400 17 Command failed'
The message keeps popping-up with every properly working card (the underlined numbers change from card to card) and nothing happens. After the error popped up the system doesnt even show that there is a (damaged) card inside. There seems to be a problem with the formating-process and the reading of the cards in general (formated the cards at the PC and in the A3).

How did you get to EMUI 5.0: official OTA, Charles method, TWRP? The first thing I'd try is going back to EMUI 4.1 and seeing if it works there. If it doesn't, it's probably time to contact Honor for a warranty claim. If it does work there, try updating to EMUI 5 again and see if it works this time.

Ich got it via the HiCare-App.
Ich looked Up the official page to rollback to 6.0.1 but a SD Card is needed somehow... Before I use some unofficial ways and may loose my warranty, I think I will ask for replacement.

Thanks for the very detailed answer.
It indeed looks like either a hardware failure or an issue with EMUI 5.0. If you have access to a USB OTG, you can potentially try to see if you can format/read the card from that; if yes, then the problem is with the slot, otherwise you can try to go back to MM using the USB OTG (don't know if it is accessible by the recovery though).
Having said that, as you suggested, I guess it's better for you to do a warranty claim and replace the phone.

I will have a look. I ordered a new one, which should come with Android 6 ex factory and an available Update I guess. I will try to Setup the SD under Android 6 and hope it will still work after the update.
I also have to admit that my phone behaves a little bit strange when there is a not readable/damaged card inside. For some reason there was a huge delay, when I tried to unlock the screen, at times. When I locked it and a second later I pressed the power button again - no special behavior. But when I waited longer (5-10 seconds were enough sometimes), the time to wake up the screen was ridiculously high. It took up to 5 seconds to wake up the screen (vs. less than a second) ,whether I used the fingerprint or the power button.
-> I searched for the problem for quite some time and voila -when I removed the SD the delay was unreproducible gone.
For some reason all my default ringtones are deleted as well but IDC anymore.
In a few days I get my new device and I'll share my experiences.. Thanks for all the advices
PS:If you have a unlock delay, try and remove your SD.

So I got my new device -fresh out of the box.
I plugged my SD card in and again the same error showed up. (At least it mentioned the brand of the damaged SD-card but maybe just because it's android 6)
I plugged in another working card and again the same error...
How high is the chance that two working cards on other devices do not work explicitly on this device?
So can anyone recommend a microSD (working on their Honor8) with 64GB ? (Available on Amazon maybe)
If this doesn't work, I see myself sending back the new device as well....
EDIT:It was definitely a defect of my two devices. I tried out the same SD in an Honor 8 at a public store and it worked just fine...

I have exacly same problem. Phone is getting hot and slow, when the card is inside. Moreover the phone does not read the card.... No idea what to do..

[Q] 32gb Kingston SD card malfunctioning

I bought a Kingston 32gb class 10 SD card and copied all my files to it (from the previous SD card). It worked great for a week. Then last night I started getting errors about the card either being damaged or unmounted. Googling hasn't told me much. Is there a special way to prepare a 32gb card, is class 10 too fast for my Inspire, does anyone know anything about this? I did find the following in a discussion on creating a gold card, so I'm trying it now (don't know if it will work--I'm running H2testw on the card right now before trying it in the phone again).
Thanks for any help on this.
QUOTED MATERIAL BEGINS HERE
When reformatting the card, Windows will place the DOS boot record at sector 0 and the MBR after the DOS boot record. The SD Card user module is not capable of working when the DOS boot record is placed in Sector-0.
To fix this issue, follow the steps below.
(1) Download Panasonics SDFormatter V2.0 (free utility)
(2) Insert SD card into Windows PC
(3) Format the SD card with the Panasonic utility, SDFormatter V2.0, using the following options.
- Format Type: Quick
- Format Size Adjustment: Off
(4) Eject the SD Card (**This is an Important Step**)
(5) Re-insert the SD card
(6) Format the SD card using Windows Explorer
- Right click on the SD card and select format
- Set file system to FAT
- Do not select Quick Format
(7) Eject the SD Card
(8) NOW You can proceed through the steps as normal and hex edit using the PSAS image without fear of the dialog box "Please format this drive". =D
In the above method, the Panasonic SDFormatter utility places the MBR in Sector-0 and Dos Boot Record following the MBR. With both the boot records intact, Windows will not alter the position of the boot records and will only initialize the FAT tables during formatting.
Update: I followed the steps listed above through #7 (I didn't need to create a gold card so I didn't go on to step 8). My card has worked fine since then.
Very nice! I followed your instructions and got my 16 GB card back. Thanks.
Is the extra money for a class 10 really worth it for a phone though?

The faster speed seems to be allowing much better sound and video synch in videos. Not sure about other read/write operations.

No, I'm just quoting what I found on the net that seemed to help in my case. I didn't come up with the "fix".
Ok, tnx for reply.

I had to reformat mine again, as last night it just went blank in my phone. Not a big deal as the process took about an hour, but as the process worked, but I'm wondering why the card went bad again?

Once I went to listen to my music after this last time of fixing the card, I found that it was messed up again. I think the culprit might have been because when you reformat the card and it's put back into the phone, there are certain folders created. I connected my phone to the computer and accessed the card that way. I copied all of my folders back onto the card and in the process, overwrote the new folders. This might have something to do with it not responding and I must have copied over the problem again, so this last time after reformatting again, I only copied over all folders, except for the existing ones on the card and it seems to be working correctly again. I say it's working correctly because I can see my music again. Hopefully this might help someone who's experiencing some problems in the future and give a little insight on trying not to copy the problem file back onto your card, like I did.

[Q] [HELP!] Micro Sdcard corrupted

So I had this 8gb micro Sdcard that came with my phone and for Christmas I got a 16gb one. I had a lot of precious stuff on the older 8gb, so I put it into an adapter and connected it to my PC, planning to backup the contents and then put it on the 16gb. But when i connected it in, it said "This card needs to be formated before using". I first i thought the adapter was broken, so I put the micro sdcard back into my android phone so I could connect my phone to the computer and do it that way but when it turned on it said "Sdcard ready to remove". The phone wouldn't recognise it either!
I have already put other micro sdcards in the adapter and they work perfectly.
I have a lot of precious stuff on the micro sdcard so if there is a way to fix it without wiping everything, I'd be really happy to hear it.
Will give the person who answered best thanks in all of their last 15 posts.
Maybe try disk manager on your PC and see what format is says the card is..
otherwise try the phone again and again hopefully it will work. Ive had that before and a combination of playing with disk manager and the phone I managed to get the stuff off my card

i would try inserting it into your phone several times to try to get it to catch..also reboot phone while card is inserted..if you have to format the card you can still get everything off of it by using a program like "recuva" .. ive used it many times and it works like a charm..nothing is ever erased on a sd card..its only overwritten..so as long as you havent overwritten anything on the card you can easily get it back..formatting will not overwrite anything
Connect your card to pc, open mini partition tool wizard. Click on your memory in program and next open.
I tried putting the sdcard back into my phone several times and always didn't work . I went onto diskmanager and see screenshot below for info (it's g/ drive). I then tried formatting with various settings and always got a failure see second screenshot.

Hey. Thanks for the reply, I installed that program but it confuses me. How do i access my sdcard with it?
My sdcard is not partitioned or used for swap or anything.
Oh and I've tried formatting with exfat, fat, fat32 and NFTS and always fails
Do you see your sd card in this program? If yes try wipe volume
I checked your screens and your card is RAW- file system is broken or is unknown to the windows , try this:
1
close ALL your programs, insert your sd card to your computer and ONLY WAIT,(15 min.) do nothing, dont touch mouse (weird? yes but your computer will try to repair file system, fot 2gb is less 5-10 minutes, but your is 8 gb class???, that wait more)
2 (optional, but you should try 3 point)
Format your sd with windows installerr (format it during window installation using windows setup disc) you can cancell instalation after format without probles
3
If still nothing (after 25 minutes) try this program http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html - IT IS LAST OPTION WITHOUT SPEND MONEY
Tell me if it worked.

[Lenovo A850] SD CARD PROBLEM

Okay so it is been some months that I am using this phone, there is actually no problem with the SD Cards that I have used in the past few months, I bought this new SD Card(that has problem) in the last 1.5 month/s it worked really well and no problem at all. But in the last 2 days, I restarted my phone(changing sim card) turned it back on, then it did not detect the SD Card, I have tried some things like formatting the phone but it did not fix it, I have tried inserting the SD Card into a card reader and insert in my computer it worked, it detected the SD Card, I then tried formatting it from the operating systems formatting tool, I also tried formatting it with SDFormatter V4.0 but it did not fix it. There was a day when my friend tried to edit voldf.stab file from /etc/ since I want it to be like the External Storage will be Internal and vice versa. That is all the informations I can give and is in my mind right now, you can ask more questions regarding this tho thank you so much for reading and I really need help in here. I cannot figure it out.

My assumptions-
-Faulty SD cage (in case you accidentally slotting in SD card with force)
-Recent change in kernel (I really don't know about kernels, check the other thread)
-Pathogens....( I mean viruses, probably system level that bugs the interference from SD slot to system)
That's my guess. You may try to consult an experienced phone serviceman, or Lenovo Service Center (if your city have one).

[CM13.0] Internal storage problem

Hello.
I have just wiped my device and installed the newest CM13.0 - Marshmallow (LG G3 D855). After rebooting and configuring my phone I got an information that my SD card is unknown. After pressing the notification the phone asked me if I want to use my SD card as external or internal storage. I read about this in the Web and decided to choose the 2nd option. The card was formatted (it was stucked at 20% for couple minutes and after that time progress bar disappeared - no information about success or errors). Internet said me to reboot my phone after the operation is completed.
Now I have a problem. External storage disappeared. I was expecting it to be a part of my old internal storage (about 10GB + 64GB of my SD). What I saw was still 10GB and nothing more. I tried to go to the settings and checked `Storage and USB`. I found my card but I couldn't check the size and anything (there was an information "Checking...", which didn't refreshed even after 2h of waiting...). I think my SD was FAT32, but I'm not sure.
Now when I put the card into my PC i see it has 16MB of size. I tried to format it with size adjustment into NTFS, exFAT and FAT32 - the size of 64GB came back but after doing factory reset and configuring everything in the same way as I described before, I get same issues (using all the file systems).
After all I got angry and decided to choose using my SD normally as an external storage. In this case I see my card and I'm able to copy data on it, BUT... It has size of 16MB... I'm tired of this and really don't have any ideas how to repair it. I don't care if it is internal or external storage. I want this to start working as expected.
Informations:
- LG G3 D855
- CM13.0 (cm-13.0-20151127-NIGHTLY-d855.zip (290.07 MB))
- MicroSDXC ADATA 64GB CLASS-10 (AUSDX64GUICL10RA1)
[EDIT - SOLVED PARTIALLY]
I have partially solved the problem. I noticed that this 16MB is just a swap space. Probably that's why Android saw it as a partition to use.
I managed to set my SD as an external storage. I used EaseUS Partition Master. I deleted all partitions on my card. Next I created a new UNFORMATTED partition (just a raw partition). Then I put my card into the microSD slot in my G3 and started the phone. I chose `external storage` option and it worked! I tried the same for internal but it hangs at 20% and gets an exception. So for now until they fix this, I will use it in the old way.

i cant say this will work, but if i had your problem i would clean off the rom and flash it again, and while in twrp before booting, format your sd card. if that doesnt help, i dont know what else to try.
i didnt know this storage option was added to cm13, but anyways, i would never use external storage as internal. ii have seen people try for years, and usually come back with some problems.

I just ran into this problem on a LS990 (Sprint LG G3) and your post gave me a lead on how to fix it.
I didn't have a microsd reader handy so I used adb shell while in recovery and deleted the partition with fdisk
1. opens ADB
Code:
adb shell
2. This shows you the partitions on your device so you can pick out your external sd card
Code:
cat /proc/partitions
3. mmcblk1 was my external sd card, yours may be different
Code:
fdisk /dev/block/mmcblk1
4. P shows your partitions on the device
Code:
p
5. D deletes the partition on your selected device device
Code:
d
6. O creates a new empty dos partition table
Code:
o
7. N creates a new partition and I accepted all defaults
Code:
n
8. W writes new partition table to disk and exits fdisk
Code:
w
9. I then shut down my phone and removed the microsd.
10. Power phone back on. Once phone has completed boot, insert SD card and it'll give you the option to set up the SD card because it's corrupt. This time, choose portable.
**Note: I'm not an expert by any means and this may be completely unnecessary to go through, but this happened to work for me. Use at your own risk**

corrupted sd card but PC sees it just fine

So, about the problem. All was fine untill a few hours ago. My note 10 notified me that my SD card is corrupted. OK, no biggie, lets just take it out and put it back in. Worked before, but not today.
Tried the same SD card in my laptop, worked without any problem. I'm feeling trolled. Next i tried with otg sd card adapter. It says "no supported partition was found".
Next, tried another SD card, still nothing. Tried that one with otg - bam, works. So, it's not card that's bad. Tried another one, was empty so i formatted it on phone. Nope - still corrupted. No matter how many times i formatted it, it's always corrupted.
But it works on laptop. All 3 of them work on laptop. Two of them i can see with otg, the one that was all the time in the phone says no supported partition.
Then i thought, maybe the sd reader in phone broke. Rebooted to recovery and guess what? First SD card that showed corrupted message works just fine in recovery. Now, one reset to factory setting would probably solve the problem but i have tons of apps that i'd need to backup and no space to do it because my sd card ain't showing in OS.
All i wanna know is am i doomed to reseting android or is there any trick i could use to avoid that?
Copy all things on your pc,format the SD Card in the Phone and copy all Things back to SD Card
nope, didn't work. had to reflash OS
