Z5 No external SD after Marshmallow [NOW WITH FIX] - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Morning all
I updated my Z5 to MM 6.0, and i am no longer able to access my external SD card. Card is a Sandisk Ultra 32Gb CLass 10
It was NOT set up as shared storage before the update, and worked fine before the update.
I have taken the card out of the phone and re-inserted it to see if it'll detect it, but that restarts the phone and still does not show.
I've also taken the card out and put it in a card reader on my laptop, contents show fine as they were before the update, and even tried formatting to exFAT to see if it would detect it, but the phone still does not see it.
Is there a fix for this? I'm a bit annoyed at this, and will be thoroughly pissed off if it won't come back as i use it for camera and music storage to keep the phone memory as clear as possible.
EDIT: NOW A FIX
See post #16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66090631&postcount=16

I got the same problem, but finally I found that my SD card path changed to /storage/D8F7-09FA, It makes some App can not find SD card, I think it's a bug in the new OS.

Thanks for your reply. I've looked in storage, cannot find anything like that on mine, looked in all folders, no luck

My SD Card is now named 2885-BD47 but I still am able to access all content
At least via File Commander and also via Gallery and also games...

Same problem here. In addition, I could not delete anything on the card through File Commander nor format the SD card in the android storage setting (got some sort of partition error). I also connect the card to PC through phone (with card inside the phone and set to MTP) and the PC could "delete" it but the files are actually still there after that when I open them through phone. I don't have a card reader with me at the moment so can't try that. The card was working fine before I upgraded to MM.

I reformatted mine after it was causing the phone to crash after the update. Try normal fat32 and make sure it's an active partition

Done that this morning, still no joy. Reads fine in a card reader, just not in the phone.
Oddly, it does not show at all like DMC_UNIVERSE post, i've been through all the folders and nothing shows with the contents of my SD card.
Really annoyed now

Sony have advised me to try the Software Repair via the Companion software. Still not working, and i've lost all my data. Now have to set up the phone from scratch again!!!

This is a Marshmallow issue, not a Sony one. It happened to me on my Nvidia Shield Tablet after it got the MM update too...

Connect the sdcard to the pc with sdcard usb adapter or reader. Try to wipe its contents, format it with default settings, select quick format. (backup whatever u need first).. After thats done insert the sdcard in to the phone and format it using the phone format sdcard option in settings>storage.
If for any reason after you reinsert your sd card back in to the phone all the contents on the sd card are still there, then simply put.. Your micro sd card is defect. Throw it out and buy a new one. Lol. This is alsoa common problem with sandisk ultra micro sd cards. Sandisk even admit it in a forum i read once, cant remember the link im afraid. But a simpke google search is your best friend for that .
Hope this cleared a few things up for u

Oh something i forgot to mention, if any of you have a custom recovery and rooted device, try this, (as it could be possible your device had put a protection/lock on the sdcard). Try to format the micro SD card within the Custom recovery instead if it doesn't work from within the settings menu.. you'll also have a bit more detail as to whats going on with the card. If custom recovery fails to format the card, then the card is literally defect. Buy a new one

I'm not sure as to what the MM update has to do with it, It could just be coincidence that your MicroSD card just happen to become defected at the time of the update...
although it seems like too much of a coincidence.. there is only 1 way to be Exactly sure, that it aint your MicroSD.. If you have any data on the card that isn't important. Then try this and post back your results....
1. Insert the microSD in to your MicroSD adapter or card reader on your PC..
2. Try to format the SD card within windows either as eXFAT or FAT32 (Try both) Inserting the card back in to the phone after each Format with both File Systems
3. Check the SD card in files within your phone with a file explorer and see if the Data on your SD card is STILL there, If it is.. The Card Is Defect/Damaged/Corrupt etc..
4. If all the data is gone, Then navigate to your Settings>Storage>Format SD CARD (using the phone/device to format it)
Let me know how you Go..

Cannot format through phone like I said in my previous post.
Tried on pc and completed the formating but the files were still there after that. Files are still accessible through pc and phone after the formatting.

Im afraid your sdcard has forsaken you.. I just happen to still have the sdcard that belonged to my mate, and i tried formatting, wiping contents through phone and pc. Even though pc allows you to format, it actually doesnt do anything. Try a new sdcard mate

There have many threads and discussions on the sandisk forums with many people having the same issues with these csrds.. Some people even bought 4-5 of them and had to send them all back to sandisk and get them replaced with working cards.. Apparently these cards do not handle being formatted too many times all that well.. Infact, people have been claiming that when they format it once or twice the card still works fine. Then after the 4-5th time, they just give out and just stop working all of a sudden.. Here is the link to the forum
http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...sk-Ultra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/td-p/284884
One user claims he used this method and it seemed to have fixed the problem.

I had the same problem as everyone else here on the forum. Nothing worked but this.
You have to format the card using Windows Command level option;
1. Run and type "cmd"
2. Then type; "format L:"
3. Get a cup pf coffee and relax
*
Notes
** L = your sd card drive letter
** don't use quotation marks
** there is a space between format and the drive letter
------------------------------
Give that a try and let me know how it goes..
Good luck guys..
EDIT: I am infront of my PC now, so I am going to try format it this way through CMD PROMPT (aka MS-DOS), and because its a 64GB card, it will take a little bit of time.. So far it's been going smoothly and it's at 13% (roughly 1% every 45sec - 1min 10sec).. It must be doing a thorough format rather than a quick format.. Let's just wait and see if all ends well..
I Will post the results / outcome once format is complete and after I test it in one of my devices..

Edit: no good.

ReEdit:: Well, the good news is, my marshmallow Z5 detects and accesses my 32GB card with proper file pathing, rw access etc..
Maybe taking your sdcard out while updating to MM could have prevented a file pathing corruption, renaming.
But @ the person who's sdcard just stopped working altogether, but you're card done for man. Funny thing is, its mainly sandisk cards. I'm not a fan of sandisk, they are too unreliable IMO..

Right, after a lengthy formatting session using windows and CMD prompt, neither worked (exFAT or FAT32).
I downloaded SD Card Formatter as suggested by this post http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...tra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/m-p/285302#M1787, and tried formatting with this (link to format tool: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html).
I tried 3 times with this, the only option that worked was to use the FULL (OVERWRITE) option within the software. Took a while, but once done, the phone discovered the card when it was inserted back into the phone. It is now recognized by all apps, and for good measure, i ran a format of the SD card from the phone's storage options in the settings menu. No prior contents showing, so all is good.
I've since copied the contents back onto the card, and they are now visible.
Thanks guys for your help!

Glad to see you go it sorted out and working mate..
Just something to remember for future reference, windows disk manager wont allow formatting anything bigger than 30GB to fat32.. You need to use a program like easeus partition master when doing so..
But im sure you're already aware of that .
Anyway. Glad you got it sorted anyway mate..

Well, i tried again using the tool provided in the link. Its a no go. The card is a dud.. I hate sandisk devices i tell ya.. Lol

same happened to me also the Play Services error, ended up reformatting the sd and clean install MM, all workin great now

i found a solution to your problem
try formatting your sd card to ur other phone and try it again on your z5
just sharing my knowledge hope it work

Thank you! That worked perfectly.
For the record, I just bought this 16 GB Class 10 MicroSD card before leaving town for the holidays. We ended up having an Xbox 360 in my kid's room and they were able to check out games for free at the front desk. But the console didn't have a hard drive, so my kids couldn't save their games. Since I didn't have anything on the microSD card yet, I put it back in it's SD adaptor and plugged in into my travel USB card reader and voila...the Xbox recognized it and ran perfectly. I just couldn't figure out how to format all the xbox files off of it after.
Thanks again.
OK, I have a new question. But I'm posting it here because it pertains to formatting the SD Card.
After formatting the card, three of my apps are grayed out and have the letters "SD" on them. Obviously, I erased part of their data when I formatted the SD card. I didn't realized that I had any apps there. Now I can't even delete the apps. What do I do?
Try to uninstall from Setting>Application>manage Apps.
If that does not work than go to titanium back up and uninstall from there
IF that does not work than manually remove it using root explorer

Odd Issue With a Micro Sd

Hey guys this is my last place to turn before I just go buy a new one but I want to see if anyone at all can help me.
I have a Sandisk 32 GB Class 4 Micro Sd. I bought it off a guy on the xda marketplace and it was in the factory packaging and took me a half hour to get out so I doubt it was fake unless people forge the packaging.
Well the other day I went to copy a file onto the card by mounting it to the computer. It copied just fine but when I unmounted the card and went onto the phone the file was no where to be found. This was off to me so I mounted the card again and it opened fine but there was no file. I then copied it again and it said it worked like it normally does. i unmounted then mounted right away and guess what the file didn't exist.
This is where it gets interesting.
I then mount the card again and select everything and delete it all. It says it works fine. I then disconnect the card then mount it again and guess what all the files are back. Like nothing happened. I then proceed to format in windows by right clicking and hitting format. It didnt do anything. I then go into recovery on the phone and try and format it. Nothing happens. I then connect the card directly to the computer with a micro to sd card adapter that is made by sandisk. It mounts to the computer fine. I then go into Easeus Partition Manager and click format. It finishes and comes up with an error saying There are some error occurred while writing partition chains on disk.
If anyone has any idea please help.
UPDATE: I have contacted Sandisk and they are going to send me a brand new card.

Is the card detected by the mobile?
If yes, try to format it in the mobile itself with the format option.
Also check how much space it shows , before & after formatting.
Try low level format

Could be a duff card but sometimes I have had this if the card has not been fully un mounted try waiting a couple more minutes before removing the card to give the system time to fully un mount it
Or it will not be written to.

dont mean to sound like a **** but you do realize I posted this over two years ago right?
but anyway the card was defective so sandisk sent me a new one.
Nooooo. This is the same issue I'm having! Ugh... mine is a 64 gb and we're about to go on a long trip. I wanted to add more music. And I can't afford to buy one from the local stores. They're too expensive! :'(
I bought mine from GeekBuying.

SD Card BlanK????

I have a razr and recently updated to ICS, but it's kind of sluggish so I decided to factory reset the phone. Before I did that, I remove external sd card (32gb) then reset the phone.
After that, I put the sd in a card reader to my computer to put some more music but it was slow for some reason, so I took it out. I put it back in my phone after the factory reset and it gave me this "sd card blank or has unsupported filessystem".
I tried rebooting the phone..I didn't work. I don't want to format..ALl my pics and apps.
I used a card reader and put it in the PC ...It didn't even recognized it...It basically did nothing. I used a different card reader and pc still the same. Then I try to use software call "Getdataback" it didn't recognized that I had a sd plugged it.
For some reason, only my phone recognized that there is a sd card plugged in, but It gave me this error.
HOw can get my data back?
It seems that many people are having this problem. Try restarting your phone several times and see if this helps.
If not, some people reported that reflasing the kernel works just fine.
btw, you should have done a NANDroid backup or something similar, it would have helped greatly.
Also try inserting any other SD Card into your phone and see how that turns out, does it work or not!?
I think the problem is the corrupt sd card
I can't get windows to recognized it!! I plugged it in using a card reader, but nothing.
I searched online..people had the same issues, but some can still access their card from a computer so they recover the data.
Mate, I have no idea how your SD Card got corrupt. In this case it might just be your computer.
If you were copying something and you unplug your SD Card/Reader out; you will get problems and corruptions like these.
However I have a suggestion, try plugging the SD Card to a Mac, before you totally give up on it. See what you get.
I don't think this is the case. Sd card problems happened for me when I formatted my sd card using a rooted android. I actually used the computer to fix the problem.
---------- Post added at 11:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:22 PM ----------
Your sdcard reader may have a huge problem if sdcard recogntion is in this kind of state.
I had the same problem but I formatted my sdcard as my card was recognized. I don't think this problem is common.
Ok. I see that you have used two card readers. If your sdcard is recognized by your phone, it should be recognized by your computer.

Q) how to format FAT32 64gb card ? can't write/delete files.

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can possibly do??
The card came as EXFAT, but most roms only support FAT32.
I formatted the card to FAT32 which was fine .. but after copying a few files the card now refuses to write or delete files. I can still open and view media that's on it but that's about it. I can't even re-format it, it will say the disk can not be formated or write error. The card isn't corrupt though, I copied around 30gbs of video on it when it was in EXFAT partition before. J
I'm using an SD adaptor into my card reader, but yes I have ensured the lock switch is off.
edit - oh also, when you place the card into the phone it'll say that the card is damaged/blank.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers,

pretty much - there's nothing you can do. I decided to email Sandisk and here's their response:
I understand that the error that appear after format is “write protected”. First we would like to apologize for the inconvenience.
I understand that you are getting write protection error while accessing the flash drive. The flash drive has detected a potential fault and become “write protected” to prevent data loss. There is no method to fix this. You will need to back-up your data and replace the flash drive.
So you have to RMA it. I'm abit confused because others on XDA have successfully covnerted their 64gb cards to FAT32 without any issues.
Could it be a faulty batch of sd cards?.

[Q] SD Card Not Writeable?

It seems that my SD card is not writable when inserted. Is this true? I tried to create a new folder on it with root explorer (I am not rooted though) and it said that my device needs to be rooted in order to accomplish that task.
Any ideas?
Jonn
Did you try something like es file explorer? I would try that.
That didn't work either. It says "operation failed".
I actually noticed that it wasn't working playing act raiser and it wasn't saving my position. Moving the ROM to internal storage worked. I then tried to create a folder.

Huh. Just tried a different SD card and that one worked. Weird.

I spoke too soon. After removing the sdcard that worked and putting it back in, it no longer is writeable.

It works again if I pull the card out, restart the shield and put the card back in. Perhaps something up with the mounting process?
It appears that once a card is mounted, if it is removed and re-inserted, it remounts as read only.

It looks like sdcard mounting is messed up. I can't get any of the sdcards i have tried to mount.
Did you go into settings and actually click unmount before removing the SD Card? Many linux systems (android is linux) will mount devices which werent safely removed in read only mode for some bizarre reason.
I tried that as well. It still doesn't work.

when you go to storage under settings, under sd card does it show total space for card. if not maybe you have to format it to NTFS first. thats what I had to do with my new card. also said to do so on shield guide

I did not read the destructions. The destructions have useful information? Where may i find these destructions? I assumed fat32 so that is what my sd is formatted to.

Yes, I formatted it to NTFS before I inserted it. It shows the total space and space available, it just doesn't allow anything to be written to it. I can take it out and put it in a PC and it works correctly. I also have another SD card that I tried and it worked for a few minutes, but I haven't been able to get it to keep working.

The only memory card I have gotten working (about 1 minute ago) is 512MB and formatted fat32
The card i want to us is a 16gb microsdhc formatted fat32 when this memory card is in my shield it knows it has a memory card but says it has no partitions on it.
I am running testdisk on the sd card and it found 9 partitoins. I will try and clean that up.
To be honest, I've never tried SD card support on the device. So I can't say one way or another. But I'll be looking at it soon enough since I got my first build of CWM for SHIELD waiting for me to debug in the other room once the kids go to bed.
I just tried two different 8GB class 10 transcend cards, an 8GB class 2 generic card and a 256mb sandisk card. I put each card in and copied a file from internal storage to it. Then I removed each of the cards without unmounting and put them back in and proceeded to copy a file to the card again. Every time it worked successfully. I do not even know what format they are in and didn't format them before testing. And, maybe the issue didn't show up because I didn't give it enough time. I am not sure.
Also, I know this is probably a really dumb question but the micro sd slot is spring loaded. You are pushing it in until you hear a good solid click right?
issues
Having issues of my own.
Bought a 64gb sandisk SDXC card for shield. It worked 100% fine in my SGS3 formated for exFat. But not in the shield...
It seems to work somewhat when formated for NTFS. But the file path is really messed up and 1/2 my apps cant see the SD card because of this. It something like (root/storage/sdcard1/....)
2 apps that are basically usless right now due to this are Power amp & FPse.
Android doesn't normally support either exFat or NTFS. The shield may include support for them but if I had a shield I would steer clear anyway and go with what android definitely trusts in FAT32.
Hopefully NVidia will do a firmware update to sort these problems though
