Now that Verizon has unlimited data again and I've upgraded to unlimited data, is there any reason I wouldn't be able to run my desktop which has a wireless card in it, connected to my Wi-Fi hotspot? I'm thinking I could do that and cut out my Comcast internet.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
that's actually what me and my wife did.....just upgraded to unlimited which was cheaper than our cable internet... and just us hotspot....thinking of also adding a line for the 10 bucks a month and getting a jetpack....which would still be a lot more cheaper than our internet bill
The only thing is, I called Verizon and They said after you use 10 gb of data via Wi-Fi hotspot that your speed is drastically slowed down

Although I'm not sure I could go through 10 gb per month just using Facebook and playing a few online poker tournaments per month

I can honestly say I haven't really noticed....if anything my netflix seems to buffer for a minute before it plays on my xbox one

I've not had a problem using them and At&T has never questioned me either.
My kids watch so much YouTube on my phone that my data usage is pretty high each month...(I still have an unlimited plan)... so it's not unusual for me to go over 5 gigs or better.
But someone that jumps from not even a gig to over 5 all of a sudden might raise a few eyebrows.

What do you use? The built in app?
i use the built in app and it works flawlessly and gives better options than the wireless tether app (ie encryption-wise and tracking connected devices)

Built in app? Which app is that? I am rooted using the unity ROM,and I'm no noob, yet I am curious to which built in app yall mean?! When I plug in my phone to usb I'm guessing I could select "internet pass thru" and yes after almost 5 years I'm still puzzled. I have always used wireless hotspot or pdanet (back in the orginal tilt haha).

really..how is that when you play online? is it laggy?
If you get 3 bars you will hardly lag and if you have 4 bars you will have no lag

If you don't have the unlimited data plan, I wouldn't recommend using it. I used it and SIGNIFICANTLY went over my data plan cap and was billed overage charges.
I got busted with AT&T using an iPhone... convinced them I had no idea what tethering was or jailbreaking, etc so they let me keep my unlimited plan. Even let me switch it when I got an Inspire after telling me I needed a "4G data plan", even though they don't have 4G... morons. Anyways, I think I'll try it on here. If you haven't gotten busted playing Live, I should be ok.
As long as you don't go crazy you're fine.

As long as u r within reasonable limits, it should all be fine. I do, once in a while, to connect to my office laptop to check mails n stuff, and NOT to download huge files nor stream media.
I say keep it under ten gigs and you will be fine

Don't count on 10 gigs as a soft limit. Companies are working towards eliminating unlimited plans, and eliminating the one in a <many many> stray customers who hog bandwidth hardly make any difference.
in my town AT&T sucks, coverage is completely spotty, we just got 3G about 2 weeks ago and the coverage is unbearable, in my house i get no service at all but when i go in the middle of town it will jump between 5 bars with 3G to 1-2 bars with edge constantly but when ever i go to a city with good 3G im tethering to my mac constantly and my data never goes over 1.5 GB even though i have the unlimited plan
I used WiFi Hotspot once when my home landline internet was on the fritz for a few hours. It was a nice backup.

I get ur point. But u know I've seen many posts here in some threads where I saw people bragging that they used way excess of 10GB and even as a replacement to home internet service. I was only indicating that as long as one doesn't abuse the network, he/she should be good. Sorry if what I said sounded differently than what I had in mind.
I'm thinking of making the switch over to Att because of sprint's lack luster speeds and I was wondering if anyone is having issues staying under the data cap? I currently have unlimited data but I don't use my phone much anymore because i am usually either roaming or having sub 150k speeds.
Thoughts?

The 2gb datapro plan is a good amount of data if you dont use netflix or slingplayer. You can use youtube but not too much. I recommend just getting a used ebay tmobile phone and using it with walmarts tmobile cheapo $50 plan. Then root the phone to remove the "4g" throttle. Or get the $30 walmart plan if you use less then 100 minutes or only use voip apps.
I'm 20 days into my first real billing month and have used only 546MB of my 2GB plan. At home and at work I have wifi, so my only data usage would be on the road. My significant data usage comes from streaming music on my way to work and going back home. That's about 45 minutes total, maybe a few minutes less sometimes, of constant streaming. I don't run any updates or download/install apps while out on the road. I also do some browsing and streaming music during the weekend too while I'm out of the house. I don't think I will reach 1GB this month...
What has you average been on sprint? You can see it online in billing. I have been on art since august after years with sprint and the difference was night and day. I use a ton of data though so I was fortunate that one of the existing lines on the family plan I joined had unlimited data

That's the only thing I'm worried about. I usually average between 1.5 and 2.5 gigs a month but that's on sprint's crappy ass network where I can watch YouTube so that's basically all fb, internet browsing, picture uploads and misc stuff.

My average is about 4gb a month. I am a heavy user (not an abuser) but I do try and use wifi when available. If I were to solely use the network I would come in somewhere around 15-20gb per month.
Keep in mind...going over just means they charge you $10 and give you another gb ...it isn't the end of the world and you have access to your usage at all times thus you can adjust if need be

Im using the 4gb/month and never get anywhere near it.. but I do have a wireless router at the house for my "hot spots"
I'll probably just bite the bullet and grab the 4gb with hotspot. I don't Netflix or sling box at work so that will save plenty of data right there.

i was in the same situation. sprint customer for over 10 years. tired of crappy speeds. my usage was between 2 and 3 gigs.thats pandora, youtube, facebook and general surfing. i switched and cant believe i waited so long. i am on the 2gb datapro and thats fine as long as i use my wifi at home. i dont try to limit the use, i will just pay the $10 overage if i have to. at least i can watch a youtube clip without buffering every 5 seconds.

Although I have an unlimited plan, I follow my data usage. For a typical billing period, I use something between 3 and 4 GB of data. I am a moderate user, mostly checking the web and email and hardly any streaming.
Make yhd switch you wont regret it. Internet on hspa+ or Lte is blazing fast compared to sprint. Had sprint since 07 left about 2 months ago. Last month my usage was 1.4 Gb. Normal internet usage really doesn't use that much data. And being unlimited is kind of overrated when your speeds stink.

Dang... you guys use hardly any data.
I have unlimited data on a network that CAN handle heavy data easily, and I take advantage of that.
4 days in, 700MB used.
At this rate, it'll be about 3GB.... wow.
I though it'd be more then that, I'm actually trying to get throttled for a test...... time to download the entire Adobe Master CS5 collection on LTE.

Not when you have unlimited data. They just throttle your speed.
Ok so i have searched a while and did not come across any posts regarding this: I have verizon and would like to see if theres a root tether option that will allow me to use my xbox and tablet off my phone. I only have a 4 gig data plan and my girlfriends unlimited plan we have already used 34 gigs in 11 days and they are starting to slow the connection speeds down. Is there a way to bypass my 4 gig limit and have unlimited tether on my phone?
Nope
Buy more data for your plan or use a landline ISP.
As far as i know there's no such thing as free interwebs.
VZW unlimited
That's what the VZW is making the new data plans for, to keep people off using up the towers for data, and to use a landline ISP for data. otherwise the bills for overcharges will rack up at like $10 extra a gb
Just get WiFi if you're going to use that much get something reliable and that you won't have to be constantly worrying About or looking for loopholes

Google Fiber is subscription based. Either way, money will still need to be paid. However, GF is superior to most American ISPs.
Verizon will let you purchase up to 20gb on all share plan then charge you $15 per gig after. never had them slow down my bandwidth. I am still on unlimited data plan.
I have grandfathered unlimited data & also grandfathered unlimited data hotspot from verizon. I think I pay $30 monthly for the hotspot feature. I know there are many ROMS that have native tethering without having a hotspot subscription.
What I am wondering is if I cancelled my hotspot, would I be able to use the phone's unlimited data plan to use insane amounts of tethered datas? The month I moved and was without internet for a month I used 70+ GB on my hotspot (which has unlimited data) and Verizon never made a peep. I gather from "openyoureyes" recent post that he uses 55+ GB of data every month without a word from Verizon. I don't know if any of that is tethered.
Does anyone use native tethering on an unlimited plan, using lots of tethered data without incident? I guess I'm asking if Verizon has any way to know if your unlimited data is being used by your phone or a tethered device if you use native tethering?
Thanks
I use anywhere from 50-80 gigs a month and Verizon hasn't complained. I don't have a tethering/mobile hotspot plan but I do have my beloved grandfathered unlimited data and I use the native mobile hotspot a lot...been doing this for at least 2 years.

I have unlimited data grandfathered - and I use the hacked hotspot constantly. I let my kid watch netflix while we're driving long distances (most weekends). I watch netflix myself, often. I easily use 60-80 gigs a month. Verizon has never said anything - ever.

Did Verizon not lose a class action over charging for LTE hot spot some thing about breech of deal with the spectrum and them agreeing to not charge for the feature.
Yeah, for tiered data subscribers. Unlimited subscribers is kinda a grey zone.

Correct, but that is for the "new plans", the ones with limited data use. I don't know if they specifically say NOT unlimited, but it wasn't intended for us. However, I don't think it would be hard to dispute if they randomly tried charging you extra.
I use about 40GB a month, most is from normal use. Maybe 10GB is from tethering... I try to do most of my downloading through my phone so they don't try to get me for tethering. I can literally do anything I want from my phone that my laptop can do (in terms of data use), its just a little more convent to tether sometimes.

Oh how I miss unlimited data...
I am considering adding a line on my account specifically for using the wifi hotspot because it would be the same price as my internet and way faster. I was just wondering if anyone who uses their hotspot very heavily for internet has had warnings from sprint about their hotspot usage?
Wasn't sure if this should go in Q&A or not since it's not a specific phone question necessarily.
The most I used in a month was 5gbs. Im about to reach 4gb this month and haven't gotten a warning from sprint using the modded unlock wifi Hotspot. You shouldn't get a warning from them about hotapot since your not using Hotspot data but your phones data instead. How much gb are you trying to use a month? If you use alot of data each month than sprint might send a letter or notify you about excess use of data but that's like if you go over 40 or 50gb of data i think.

Its really easy to rack up that much data usage while tethering to the 360 and watching Netflix for days on end. A few Seasons of your favorite show and that could easily be 50 gigs used
