Tethering phone w/o using data package - General Topics

Ok so i have searched a while and did not come across any posts regarding this: I have verizon and would like to see if theres a root tether option that will allow me to use my xbox and tablet off my phone. I only have a 4 gig data plan and my girlfriends unlimited plan we have already used 34 gigs in 11 days and they are starting to slow the connection speeds down. Is there a way to bypass my 4 gig limit and have unlimited tether on my phone?

Nope
Buy more data for your plan or use a landline ISP.
As far as i know there's no such thing as free interwebs.

VZW unlimited
That's what the VZW is making the new data plans for, to keep people off using up the towers for data, and to use a landline ISP for data. otherwise the bills for overcharges will rack up at like $10 extra a gb

Just get WiFi if you're going to use that much get something reliable and that you won't have to be constantly worrying About or looking for loopholes

Google Fiber is subscription based. Either way, money will still need to be paid. However, GF is superior to most American ISPs.

Verizon will let you purchase up to 20gb on all share plan then charge you $15 per gig after. never had them slow down my bandwidth. I am still on unlimited data plan.

T-Mobile now charging 14.99 for wifi sharing

This is bull****. Yesterday I was using my mobile ap on my computer and everything was going fine. Then a message popped up in my browser saying to continue using the mobile ap I need to add it to my plan for 14.99. Idk about all of you but I've had no problems since I got this phone at launch using the wifi sharing is there a way around this cuz T-Mobile is really starting to piss me off.

Yep, don't use the t-mobile tether app download wifi tether for root users from the market and use that. I'm assuming you are rooted?
Yea I'm rooted lol I've tried 3 tethring apps off the market and they had the same result as the built in one. I can't find the one your talking about tho. All I'm finding is the ones I already tried.

OP: have you gone over your high-speed data cap? i read somewhere that Tmo mainly charges for tethering if you use a LOT of data. but yeah, that would suck if they are now charging for the use of the data we have already purchased!

It sounds like it's not the wifi app that's doing it, but the t-mobile data servers. I imagine they're acting as a captive portal, redirecting pageloads from a browser with a desktop user agent to their nag screen or something along those lines. I use a Sidekick 4G with the stock firmware and wifi app up here in Canada on the Wind network and it's been working fine.
(BTW, Wind beats the crap out of any American carrier! Their plans include free tethering.)
Networks are greedy they suck.

A lot of the android browsers are able to set user agent as desktop so I doubt it's that. They have blocked the free tether apps from the market and only provide theirs so I think it's just them monitoring their app.
BTW I'm jealous of your free tethering, as soon as the carriers heard people were doing it here they were quick to monopolize on it
Well, if t-mobile is able to interfere with wifi tethering even when you use a third party wifi tethering app, then there must be something else at play. I can't say what though as I'm not on t-mobile.
<brag> Wind is even better than that. $40.00 after tax for unlimited calling, unlimited long distance to US/Can, unlimited text messaging to anywhere on earth, unlimited data with tethering. And I get that whenever I'm connect to a Wind tower, anywhere in Canada. It doesn't distinguish between my home city and another. And no contract. It's prepaid! </brag>

What I mean is they block them in the actual market, like you can't download them. They have no way of monitoring 3rd party apps, that's why I think almost all US carriers have capped data so they can try and stop some.
Not fair man, US needs to get on bord with the contract free stuff. A cheap cell phone plan here for unlimitted is $80 a month and that comes with a 2 year contract, at&t and verizon charge around $120 for unlimitted
Have you tried sneaking one of the third party apps on to see how it works?
That's staggeringly awful. This is the most featureful cell phone plan available, and it's $40. I'm told that people in another province got the plan for $35 at one point.
Yeah we have to side load the apps, google search and download from the browser. I've had a copy in my sd card since the g1 days when things were good lol.
We also have at&t trying to buy out t-mobile which would more than likely drive prices up further. there are a few pay as you go carriers that offer cheaper plans for unlimitted data and text (around $40) but the minutes are rarely unlimited, the data is slower, and they are buying towers off the bigger companies so coverage is usually terrible
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I've always gotten Wireless Tether straight from the Google Code site. It always has the very latest versions, but somtimes earlier ones are the more stable.

EDIT: Only post paid costumers have that issue... prepaid still doesn't have the tethering service available... so it is enabled by default. http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons...PAsset=InternetEmail&tp=Svc_Tab_TetheringWifi
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about... I'm wifi tethering and I've never seen that message. I only tether to a linux computer though. I'm also on the $30 5GB 4G prepaid plan, with unlimited text and 100 mins (I voip with grooVe).
Maybe they are attacking specific customers... I don't think wifi sharing is even an option for prepaid. Perhaps I should stop paying a month in advanced.

The way tmobile explained it to me was they noticed ppl using it and changed their service if your using it and not getting the message its only a matter of time according to the reps I spoke to. I'm thinking the more data you use that gets picked up as being sent through mobile ap the quicker they catch on and slap you with the message and put a stop to it

I'm on T-mobile prepaid monthly 4g plan, rooted running GingerClone ROM on my Sidekick 4g, and I've had no problem tethering. (mostly just testing it out to see if it works, running speed tests etc.)
I can see how T-mobile cracks down on post-paid plans running stock software, but with a prepaid plan on a wifi-sharing-capable phone with a custom ROM, I'm in the clear, right? T-mobile can't block tethering or charge me for it?
But ya, charging $14.99 to tether using data that you're already paying for is a complete scam. Seems like a class action suit waiting to happen.

AT&T New Unlimited Data Plan!.. (10238976 MB allowace)

Has anyone recently checked their AT&T account in regards to their unlimited LTE data plan?
My features are correct when checked "LTE Smartphone unlimited personal add-on", selected
Usage data usage reports 545.64 of 10238976 MB
The ? mark bubble when hovered states:
"You have the 10238976 MB data plan. When you reach your data plan limit,
an additional 1KB will be automatically added at a cost of $null.
Your Data usage is current as of 09:06:34 11/20/2011"

That sucks! Denver doesn't have LTE yet, but I decided to sell my Skyrocket on eBay. Didn't want to be throttled on the LTE plan when only using HSPA+.. I average at least 5 - 6GB a month.. wasn't going to stick around and find out if I reached the top 5% on the LTE plan, when only using the slower network.
I'll wait until more coverage becomes active and reaching the top 5% is a long shot!

Just another win for us Nokia fanboys!! Hell, the N8 has more usable features than most of the phones out now. Couple of questions about this phone and ATT

Upon searching I got too many results to filter through on these 2 questions...
1. Can i get 4g on this phone if I didn't buy it straight through ATT? I tried enabling it on my plan online and it flags that it's not my registered phone so it kicked it out.
2. Can I enable tethering without paying ATT? I've tried a few different apps but the ATT stuff still kills it.

I beg to differ, I've been tethering for years on my unlimited data plan and have never paid a cent for it. I don't use obscene amounts of data while doing it though.
OP, rooting and installing a custom rom will let you tether for free as long as you don't get caught.

Its only a matter of time. Att is watching the packets sent, so you will be caught soon enough.
ive used tethering scince I got my iPhone 3G which was my first phone and ATT hasn't said anything about it and I don't see why people think its wrong, YOU pay for the data YOU should be able to use it any way you want including tethering.
H+, 3G, EDGE, on an aftermarket rom you can enable tethering but you may get a letter fron ATT saying they noticed you were using tethering and if you continue tethering they may add a $45 tether plan to your account...

Unless you have a data plan that includes tethering, doing so is a violation of the terms of service you agreed to, that's what's wrong.
OP, call AT&T and tell them what phone you're using. They should put in the appropriate data plan at no add'l cost or loss of unlimited data, if that's what you have. I got moved from a "regular" 3G plan to one that is HSPA compatible when I got my Inspire.
Of course, if you're referring to LTE, that wont work on the Inspire.

I am curious about your comment about being against tethering. Can you expand on that. I am trying to learn more on the topic. I will not flash a custom rom - have gotten use to SENSE.
I find AT&T being greedy by charging their customers a premium to tether. I pay $25 a month for 2GB and they want me to pay an additional $20 to tether and get another 2GB. I rarely use the 2GB I have now and want to tether when I am not at home when I travel usually. If I go over my 2GB limit, I have to pay $10 for each GB over 2. I am more than happy to pay the $20 more if I use the 2GB but having to pay it each month makes no sense to me - other than carrier greed. --- how does it hurt their network or other customers?
ATT is not the only one that charges extra for tethering. So does, T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. So before you start calling them greedy just stop and think. To say I am totally against tethering may have not been the correct words out of my mouth. ATT has let tethering slide for many years for those that just do it once in awhile for emails or occassional browsing. So they are greedy ehhh? But in this technical day and age there are those that abuse it. Some that just go too far with what they use it for and how much data they use. And that does make it bad for others in certain areas where the bandwith may get diluted. So ATT, like other carriers had to cap it off to make it fair for everyone. The ATT service is meant for your phone and not your home computer.
Buying a gun does not give you the right to take it out in the woods and shoot anything you want. You still need a license for what you shoot. If you travel that much then you can afford $20 extra a month. If you use it that little then seriously root your phone and take your chance tethering. You don't have to give up sense. I am running a ROM that looks and runs exactly like the Inspire 2.47 ROM except I don't have messaging bugs, most of my ads are gone, and I can tether with Hotspot if I so need to.

You are correct with this. Tethering should only be disallowed with the unlimited plan, as it has never been allowed with it. With the tethering plan, AT&T is not charging you more to tether. It is forcing you to buy more data for tethering. Since data is sold as blocks with the tiered plans and you pay for additional data used, tethering should be included with those plans. If you go over the 2GB, you are going to pay an additional &10 per GB and would end up paying $45 for 4GB anyways. AT&T not being so greedy would allow a person that only needs to tether a small amount in a pinch and doesn't go over the 2GB to not have to purchase additional data when they didn't need it. AT&T has it structured like everyone that wants to tether will use excess amounts of data. This is simlpy not true, and for those that do, the need to purchase additional data covers that. Now, the unlimited is different because one can tether greater amounts of data and not have to pay anymore. But with the tired plans, since data is bought I'm blocks, there is no way for abuse.

The unlimited data is NOT lost. Data is still unlimited. But if you switch your sim from a phone that is not HSPA-compatible (like an iPhone) to one that is, you won't realize the faster data speeds unless you let AT&T know you've changed, and they change you over to an HSPA plan. But unlimited data wont change if you're already grandfathered in.

Me too. SIM doesn't matter. Coding in the system doesn't matter. Hardware (radio) in the phone and software (radio, build.prop, apn, etc) configuration on the phone matters when it comes to which network your device is going to connect to

There was a time awhile back when I tethered with my Windows phone, but rarely went over 1gb total usage for the month. I have never tethered with my Inspire, yet last month I went just over 4gb of usage. I know it is against the terms to tether with the unlimited, but for me, it is not more a matter if you tether or not, but a matter if you abuse it or not. And even if you don't tether, you could still use massive amounts of data on this phone. I know I could with the Netflix app alone.

yeah, don't use it for watching movies and as a hotspot for your entire house. There were a few methods used before, but I can't remember them and I don't think I can speak about it anyway as you did sign a contract that limits your data to 5gb. I'm on it too and unless I go crazy with movies I don't get close. Sorry.

Are you on T-Mobile? They recently added a new data plan that is unlimited, unrestricted data use even past 5 GB. For me, it was the same exact price that I was already paying. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure it's the same price as the previous 5 GB plan.

It's part of the value plans. It's called Unlimited Nationwide 4G and is $69.99
Found it cost twice of what I pay now its 89.99 bs price

I'm a family plan and didn't have to pay extra for it. I assumed it would be the same for anyone also already on a 5 GB plan.
I'm on 5 gb plan bit not enough since I mostly watch youtube and Netflix. Doesn't make sense to have 4g and surf web only

You are looking at the classic plan. As I said look for the Value plan. Otherwise there is no other way of getting unlimited internet.
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Packages/ValuePackages.aspx
Also since you are probably on the 100 min unlimited plan then you can jump on the 500min unlimited plan which is $59.99 or the one without unlimited texts for $54.99

Wrong, look at the list.
There is a 200mb option then a 2gig option and then last an unlimited plan which is nearly 1TB.
There is a 69.99 unlimited everything but there is probably a catch lile for new user only with 2 yrs. Agreement

Nope, It does require a 2 year contract but it's not for just new users. It's not a limited time plan or anything.
Damn why can't I just change plan without contract

For me, it would end up costing about $20 more per month as I'm on the value family plan and pay $90 before taxes for 2 lines with unlimited talk, text and 5gb data.
I'd go into a store and see if you can strong arm them into giving you the plan. They hate losing customers since their only advantage is being cheaper, nicer and more open to a range of devices.

That's a lot of advantages lol. I recently switched to Simple Mobile and the speeds are the exact same, signal is the same (uses T-Mobile towers) and I hardly use my phone's data to watch much youtube since there's usually wifi somewhere, including my house. Whoever watches Netflix on their phone via your data connection... you'rs just asking to get capped.
Are you always traveling? Try to use WiFi.

The unlimited data plan tmobile just introduced includes a proxy redirect if you try to tether your phone to another device. If you're blowing through your 5gb cap because all you do is watch youtube and netflix on tmobile, you have two options...choose to loose the ability to tether, and maybe pay a little more.
I get redirect now without. The new plan

Unlimited Data & Native Hotspot

I have grandfathered unlimited data & also grandfathered unlimited data hotspot from verizon. I think I pay $30 monthly for the hotspot feature. I know there are many ROMS that have native tethering without having a hotspot subscription.
What I am wondering is if I cancelled my hotspot, would I be able to use the phone's unlimited data plan to use insane amounts of tethered datas? The month I moved and was without internet for a month I used 70+ GB on my hotspot (which has unlimited data) and Verizon never made a peep. I gather from "openyoureyes" recent post that he uses 55+ GB of data every month without a word from Verizon. I don't know if any of that is tethered.
Does anyone use native tethering on an unlimited plan, using lots of tethered data without incident? I guess I'm asking if Verizon has any way to know if your unlimited data is being used by your phone or a tethered device if you use native tethering?
Thanks
I use anywhere from 50-80 gigs a month and Verizon hasn't complained. I don't have a tethering/mobile hotspot plan but I do have my beloved grandfathered unlimited data and I use the native mobile hotspot a lot...been doing this for at least 2 years.

I have unlimited data grandfathered - and I use the hacked hotspot constantly. I let my kid watch netflix while we're driving long distances (most weekends). I watch netflix myself, often. I easily use 60-80 gigs a month. Verizon has never said anything - ever.

Thanks for the $30 a month guys, where do I send the check?.....
Unlimited data here and I don't pay for the hotspot either. I don't use near as much data as those folks above but I've been doing it for almost 3 years.
$30? **** that.

Did Verizon not lose a class action over charging for LTE hot spot some thing about breech of deal with the spectrum and them agreeing to not charge for the feature.
Yeah, for tiered data subscribers. Unlimited subscribers is kinda a grey zone.

Correct, but that is for the "new plans", the ones with limited data use. I don't know if they specifically say NOT unlimited, but it wasn't intended for us. However, I don't think it would be hard to dispute if they randomly tried charging you extra.
I use about 40GB a month, most is from normal use. Maybe 10GB is from tethering... I try to do most of my downloading through my phone so they don't try to get me for tethering. I can literally do anything I want from my phone that my laptop can do (in terms of data use), its just a little more convent to tether sometimes.
