Has anyone recently checked their AT&T account in regards to their unlimited LTE data plan?
My features are correct when checked "LTE Smartphone unlimited personal add-on", selected
Usage data usage reports 545.64 of 10238976 MB
The ? mark bubble when hovered states:
"You have the 10238976 MB data plan. When you reach your data plan limit,
an additional 1KB will be automatically added at a cost of $null.
Your Data usage is current as of 09:06:34 11/20/2011"
(I'm glad my math skills still works 9999GB, it will be my mission to get as close to that limit as possible!)
138.6MB of Unlimited. This is via *DATA#

That is 9,999GB. Do you really think you'll go over that? Computers use numbers; I'm sure its just some sort of visual representation, while also being ridiculously large to ensure you don't surpass it.
How did you get that plan option? or is it just a grandfathered plan?

LOL!!!! AT&T strikes again. So what's the point of using LTE if its constantly throttled?
exactly.
vz isnt much better.. id kinda rather be throttled then get overage charges weekly (if i was on any other carrier or on a tiered plan with att)
will make another complaint to the fcc this time it will be on price fixing between the big three.

That sucks! Denver doesn't have LTE yet, but I decided to sell my Skyrocket on eBay. Didn't want to be throttled on the LTE plan when only using HSPA+.. I average at least 5 - 6GB a month.. wasn't going to stick around and find out if I reached the top 5% on the LTE plan, when only using the slower network.
I'll wait until more coverage becomes active and reaching the top 5% is a long shot!

There's not unlimited anymore because AT&T doesn't want it around, point blank. It has very little to do with the users. It's statements such as yours that justifies their actions and allows them to slide under the radar. Don't blame your peers, blame the company gouging you for profits.

Mine still says: 5287.95 MB of Unlimited, and I have 20 days left in my cycle and I have never been throttled with my data usage and no, I don't tether but I do stream alot of movies to my phone, which is a Nokia N8 (a non-smartphone in the eyes of AT&T) I love how I can get the cheaper non-smartphone unlimited data plan and it is all within the limits of my contract. Just another win for us Nokia fanboys!! Hell, the N8 has more usable features than most of the phones out now. I love the fact that I can connect a portable hard drive up to the phone and play movies onto a HDTV via HDMI or just over wifi and play it on my PS3 or xbox360, the 12mp camera with a real xenon flash and not some ****ty LED flash, Battery life is awesome, 48gb of memory, FM transmitter (because Ipod docks are for *******!!), and if I wanted to say **** AT&T and switch over to T-Mobile, then I could without having to get a new phone because it works on T-mobiles 3g network as well.

blah sadly today tmobile capped by data, because i went over the`5gb limit. is there a way to uncap it, or at least does anyone have an idea?
It took me just a week to get my data capped. Its because id rather use my phone and get 8mbps instead of my home Internet which is sadly 0.4mbps. I don't think its possible to get the cap removed. Your going to have to wait till your next cycle.
I thought they just throttle it and not cap it?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
GEEZ, what are on do you guys do to stream so much data? I've never hit close to that in a month
Lol i practically use my phone as a computer. I download things from games to music
I thought that for Unlimited Data they just drop you down to 3G after you've used 5GB on 4G.
It is my understanding that they throttle you pretty hard at 5 GB, to GPRS or EDGE speeds.
If you haven't deleted it, My Account will show your usage. I use 3G Watchdog which will straight-line predict your end-of-month usage as well.
For people not used to the speeds available, it isn't hard to chew up 5 GB in a month. For example, if you stream 128 kbps radio for an hour in the morning and an hour on the way home, that is about 3.3 GB of payload, so probably 3.5-4 GB of data transfer a month.
Thankfully TuneIn FCs a lot
Yea man they bone you pretty hard after you go past 5gb. I went from 4g to edge smh, I am aboit to calk and complain. I am pretty sure there was a way to get passed it on the vibrant, after things get settled for the galaxy s 4g I'm sure we will be able to do the same.
I thought it was 10gb?

Thats not worth it. Every carrier has a cap even if they advertise that they don't. I've read on the internet that on sprint people get throttled and maybe even get their accounts canceled going over a certain limit. I think tmobile's is the best option right now.

Thats wrong, Sprint is the only carrier with true unlimited. Although there data speeds are the worst of the big four. I barely got 1mbs on 3G and around 4mbs on 4G. When i could get a signal, witch sucks cause i live in KC. Sprints headquaters is here, I could no longer take the slow speeds and went back to tmo where i have 4G everywhere I go. Usually around 8mbs and i have 3G around 5mbs.

The war of words and facts continues with sprint preparing a new TV ad -- more of a campaign -- where CEO Dan Hesse goes on camera and defines the word "unlimited" and what concepts it is not compatible with.
These incompatible terms are "metering, overage, or throttling, which is code for slowing you down", Hesse says while Bill Morgan, sprint senior vice president-Corporate Marketing agrees that some of Sprint's competitors are creating confusion in their customer's minds by referencing "unlimited" plans which are not unlimited in reality.

Your prices are locked in as long as you stay with them. The prices may get even better now that together that will be bigger than Verizon and start trying to beat eachothers prices. Not to mention with any luck better service area. Still not that excited to see them merge.

Thanks a bunch
So now that more and more phones are going to support netflix I for one was extremely happy over this. I work at some job sites that are extremely boring so I normally throw a few movies on my tablet for entertainment.
Well having netflix streaming through my phone was so awesome! I watched a few movies last night and then boom all my data died. checked my data usage on t-mobile and I had used 5.6gigs of data.. still have like 12 days until my data resets.
I am thinking that carriers are going to see a lot more people maxing out their "unlimited" plans now with netflix.
Of course if available you would want to use wifi to watch movies but I was thrilled to think on road trips, boring job sites, etc I could watch a movie at will.
I am thinking with more data intensive apps coming to our phones these caps to "unlimited" plans need to go away.
Just my two cents
Not only netflix but with Google Music as well.
But yea i busted my last month as well. With like a week to go.
Thanks
Thanks for the heads up... The whole "unlimited thing" needs to be reworked .. i maxed out my 5 gigs streaming slingbox on my phone during the ncaa tourney .. i watched one game and that was it
yeah, I did the online chat with t-mobile and asked them why they would roll out things like netflix onto android when the data cap will be toast by just a few movies and his reply was "it was meant to be used over wifi" I can see where they are coming from but I really think you will find more and more with everything being stored on the "cloud" these caps are going to start being a serious issue.
Just hope in time they will go truly unlimited.

T-mobile used you be truely unlimited I think. Don't expect any of the carriers will ever go backwards in their policies reguarding data usage. Especially with netflix, pandora, google music and all the other high data usage apps out now. Those things along with people using their phone data to download roms and mods and to tether has really killed any chance of true unlimited at normal speeds. The data caps will only get worse and more expensive as more and more people do these types of things and as Android gets more users.

If I am somewhere with wifi I could most likely watch netflix on my laptop. The data cap completely kills the usefulness of mobile netflix.
A one hour show uses approx 100mb I think
I'm wondering if the old Android unlimited data plans are still truly unlimited. I have the same $25 data package I got with my G1 back in '08.
Nope, just called, the old unlimited plans cap at 5gb. They could have at least given us the 10gb cap, since we signed up for "unlimited".
AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L
With mobile data usage continuing to skyrocket and the availability of spectrum scarce, AT&T, like other wireless companies, manages its network in the most fair way possible so that we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience for all our customers.
How we’re managing the network only affects a small minority of the heaviest smartphone data users still on unlimited plans. Put another way, this does not impact more than 95 percent of our smartphone customers.
Our unlimited plan customers have told us they want more clarity around how the program works and what they can expect. Here’s what customers need to know:
Customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – will see speeds reduced if they use 3GB (gigabytes) of data or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle. For context, less than 5 percent of smartphone customers use more than 3GB per month.
For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle
Click to collapse
Customers will get a text message from us before experiencing a change in speed.
Even with reduced data speeds, these customers will still be able to email and surf the web, and continue to use an unlimited amount of data each month.
Not impacted by this program, launched last year, are customers on our tiered data plans.
The reason reduced speeds only apply to unlimited smartphone customers is because their data usage is significantly higher than those on tiered plans. For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans.
Because spectrum is limited and data usage continues to soar, we manage our network this way to be as fair as possible and so we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience to everyone.
We encourage all of our customers to use Wi-Fi whenever possible – especially when watching video, which is the most data-intensive activity.
That’s because data activity over Wi-Fi does not count against the threshold for unlimited customers that triggers reduced data speeds or against customers’ tiered data plans. Customers can find out more at www.att.com/datainfo
But some people were getting throttled even when they didn't go over 3gb. I believe they shouldn't throttle for the whole billing cycle. Only when someone is abusing it when there's a lot of traffic in the network, and restore it after that period. But that would probably require a lot of work. I dunno just my opinion.
Never been throttled, I don't use a lot of data.

You're still getting unlimited data. When you signed up, did the contract guarantee you unlimited data at speeds greater than or equal to XXmb/s, or just unlimited data?
Maybe a better way to "CLARIFY" is to change the Plan name from UNlimited to " LIMITED "
That would clear it all up would'nt it?

And does anyone know if this 3GB cap just started?

I think 5GB sounds fair for an "unlimited" (limited) plan.
I would never go over that!... 3GB... I hover around that every month for sure.

Here's the deal. Less than 5% of AT&T users have unlimited data. They want the unlimited people gone. They are trying to monetize power-users while managing bandwidth (which is a finite resource) to keep the average users happy. If you had a business and had to choose between keeping 5% of your customers happy, or 95% of your customers happy... you would make the same choice. These decisions aren't about the users today... it's about 2015 when the average smartphone user will use alot more data... and there will be more smartphone users.... etc, etc.
Not saying I condone these decisions... but after all they are a business. They have a finite resource (bandwidth) and have to make as much profit as possible with that finite resource. Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees, and neither does money. End of story.
Not too pleased about a text saying im using too much data on an unlimited data plan. 3.5GB Used in about 3 week or so isnt tht bad considering todays phone features and my speeds of 1Mb up and down load bandwidth. Any way through or around this fair use policy thing? I want to keep enjoying my new galaxy s3.

3.5GB in 3 weeks is top-tier data usage. You'll be able to find language about it in your contract.
As for getting around it. No dice. You signed the contract agreeing to (however they're laid out) the terms which allow them to throttle/cut you off if you're using a lot.
It's possible, too, that your primary data usage location is on a particularly congested section of backhaul, which will cause problems.
♡true unlimited data♡
Gutted. Ive seen people talk about sprint... an american network provider i take it... and they dont cap your data use. Is this true and are there any such providers in the uk?
3.5GB in 3 weeks >> omg its damn high n
2.13GB of it is youtube... as you do... then googling and googlemaps/satnav are the other big uses. Ive ate through it realy easy.
Thing is i do use my wifi. 14.3 GB worth in the same time frame. Youtube and online fps.
Unlimited Data does not mean it's completely Unlimited, there is a cap of either 1GB, 3GB, 5GB as such and if you go over that limit they will slow down your speeds. Yes, there is Unlimited Browsing, but that's just for surfing. How you used up 3.5GB in 3 weeks is beyond me and absurd!
Mobile Data browsing is for surfing not be used as a replacement Wifi.

I use my wifi when possible. Thts about 13GB in the 3 week.
As you are a heavy user, consider moving to Three when your contract is up. They do all you can eat data packages.

Wow man! 3 gb in 3 weeks, Next time, buy unlocked then buy a sim card.
1GB a month seems reasonable. Get a life outside your phones screen. There is a whole world out there. I bet you're one of those people who cross the street while texting.
It's easy enough to consume large amounts of data on a monthly basis just because OP has used 3.5gb doesn't mean he hasn't got a life.
I consume loads of data as I stream my music to and from work, Spotify makes up most my data usage. Watch videos at work when on my breaks now and then via YouTube.
Anyway to answer your question, Three provide unlimited data and GiffGaff also. Three are good but depends if signal is good in your area.
If your in a contract then nothing you can do and do not continue to exceed the usage, you'll either get charged for it or lead to a ban.

Really people are still using the old "use more wifi" bullcrap!?! How about phone companies stop spewing crap about "unlimited data" when its not really. Who are they to tell me that I cant use a service that I pay for as I damn well please.
Why should I need home wifi when Im paying 90 bucks a month for my cell service and I use my phone as its meant to be, a mini convenient replacement for my computer.
Its all about technology and cell providers need to catch up instead of slowing us down.

Sprint user here, yeah. 1GB of data was gone in a few days & hell, that was just the phone doing background syncing & photo uploads.
Gotta love unlimited data.

Haha. That is funny. I consistently use upwards of fifteen gigabytes a month. This is with going out with friends everynight, bmxing, designing and writing, and other lifey stuff. Technology is meant to intergrate with your life; not to take you away from it.

All depends on the tarriff and the language of the contract.
From personal experience, I agree with the others. 3 is probably the best network for you if you honestly don't want danger of throttling / warnings and are prepared to pay the price.
Long story short - due to the ASA bringing in new guidance, people can't say unlimited and then limit you in any volume related way without making that clear in terms and offer description.

I've had this phone less than 2 weeks, grandfathered into vzw unlimited data. Needless to say I think vzw is going to hate me...

I'm on virgin in canada and last month i used 42gb on my unlimited plan...
no fair i was on t-mobiles $20/month plan with 10gb/month and they 'changed' the plan without notice. so now i'm stuck with 5gb...
I'm only at about 1g use right now, work and home wifi (poor signal area) has been keeping my mobile data use down since I got this phone. I'll probably use about 3gigs next month though. Btw, I can see this thread creating some tension with those who don't have unlimited.

Purpose of this thread....Help show why Verizon did away with unlimited data?
No wonder why they are eliminating unlimited, what the heck do you do on your phone to use 28Gb? (tethering i assume)
haha nice. last semester in college, my wired connection wasn't working so i had to 'illegally' tether my atrixs' hspa+ for a week. used about 15gb in a week to watch live streams of the us open. thank god for unlimited data
with the extra ram this phone makes actual real life data speeds sooooo much faster than my other lte phones could do. I'm at 39 gigs so far with billing cycle ending the 29th. And that's without even having the gs3 the whole time, wonder what ill get to next month? Btw no tethering here, I just really like watching HD video

Not too bad methinks..
I have to laugh at all the people who say a few of us who use high amounts of data is why a carrier will remove unlimited data for everyone. So they feel bitter at us for ruining it for everyone else and would rather blame us than their service provider, since its easier.
Oh please, don't you think these carriers would have just throttled or kicked off us few users, instead of forcing tiered plans on all their customers? Its all because of further maximizing profit, not because of us.
Doesn't bother me at all, I still have unlimited data just can't see how people are able to use that much data on a phone in a month.
Must have to have the phone plugged in all the time.
Most I have ever been able to do is 13 GB. I really had to try for that though.
Since July 9th.:
554 MB on Verizon
Since June 24th:
5.58 GB over wi-fi

lol yes i believe i do. luckily i elected to buy the version of the galaxy s 3 that gets preference over others on the data network so sorry i guess everyone will have to wait for me to finish my download before its their turn. best decision i ever made, and to think i actually almost bought the gs3 that you have that gives the busy signal when others are using the network. man im glad i dodged that bullet haha
all sarcasm aside, has anyone ever actually had a problem with using verizons network that can be attributed to data hogs? this isnt 2007 and im not in att using an iphone. big deal, i use a lot of data that i pay for so what. any other user on verizon canuse the exact same amoutn of data as i choose to use bc verizon doesnt throttle the 4g speeds, youll just have to pay more than my price for it. dont hate those of us lucky enough to use all the data we want without paying any overage unless you also go around hating every verizon employee for getting a company discount on the same sevice you pay for. also, those of us on verizon who no longer have the unlimited data plan have access to a discount on upgrades that the unlimited users dont have the smae access to but we sure dont go around flaming others for only having to pay $199 for our $599 phones. every thing is a trade off

Yay for forced data limits/throttle in the future. Vzw doesn't guarantee any "grandfathering". It says right in the contract they can change terms on you and it gives you a free out to go to other carriers. The whole –look at what I can do is quite childish. Whatever.
Heck I use 30gb at home on Cox between two computers and a ps3 and pay for 50gb

A guy over on the Rezound forums hit 1TB. I'm sitting at about 9GB this month.
And for the people bleating about this being why they did away with unlimited data--no. Just shut up. They did it out of pure greed. LTE is cheap, and for every person using 30gb there's 10 people using 500mb. Verizon might be losing money on some customers, but in the aggregate, they were still making money hand over fist, even with unlimited data. But they can make more with shared/tiered. Guess which they went with?
I'm normally around wifi except when I go workout so I rarely break 2gb. Even so I have no problems with data hogs. I've worked a number of years at an isp and I can tell you data hogs are not the problem unless if the network engineers are total idiots. A properly managed network will prevent heavy users from bogging down the network during peak usage.
But many of you guys buy right into the carrier's manufactured bandwidth crisis so they can justify charging $15 per gb.
