I'm on virgin in canada and last month i used 42gb on my unlimited plan...
no fair i was on t-mobiles $20/month plan with 10gb/month and they 'changed' the plan without notice. so now i'm stuck with 5gb...
I'm only at about 1g use right now, work and home wifi (poor signal area) has been keeping my mobile data use down since I got this phone. I'll probably use about 3gigs next month though. Btw, I can see this thread creating some tension with those who don't have unlimited.

No wonder why they are eliminating unlimited, what the heck do you do on your phone to use 28Gb? (tethering i assume)
haha nice. last semester in college, my wired connection wasn't working so i had to 'illegally' tether my atrixs' hspa+ for a week. used about 15gb in a week to watch live streams of the us open. thank god for unlimited data
with the extra ram this phone makes actual real life data speeds sooooo much faster than my other lte phones could do. I'm at 39 gigs so far with billing cycle ending the 29th. And that's without even having the gs3 the whole time, wonder what ill get to next month? Btw no tethering here, I just really like watching HD video

Not too bad methinks..
I have to laugh at all the people who say a few of us who use high amounts of data is why a carrier will remove unlimited data for everyone. So they feel bitter at us for ruining it for everyone else and would rather blame us than their service provider, since its easier.
Oh please, don't you think these carriers would have just throttled or kicked off us few users, instead of forcing tiered plans on all their customers? Its all because of further maximizing profit, not because of us.
Doesn't bother me at all, I still have unlimited data just can't see how people are able to use that much data on a phone in a month.
Must have to have the phone plugged in all the time.
Most I have ever been able to do is 13 GB. I really had to try for that though.
Since July 9th.:
554 MB on Verizon
Since June 24th:
5.58 GB over wi-fi

lol yes i believe i do. luckily i elected to buy the version of the galaxy s 3 that gets preference over others on the data network so sorry i guess everyone will have to wait for me to finish my download before its their turn. best decision i ever made, and to think i actually almost bought the gs3 that you have that gives the busy signal when others are using the network. man im glad i dodged that bullet haha
all sarcasm aside, has anyone ever actually had a problem with using verizons network that can be attributed to data hogs? this isnt 2007 and im not in att using an iphone. big deal, i use a lot of data that i pay for so what. any other user on verizon canuse the exact same amoutn of data as i choose to use bc verizon doesnt throttle the 4g speeds, youll just have to pay more than my price for it. dont hate those of us lucky enough to use all the data we want without paying any overage unless you also go around hating every verizon employee for getting a company discount on the same sevice you pay for. also, those of us on verizon who no longer have the unlimited data plan have access to a discount on upgrades that the unlimited users dont have the smae access to but we sure dont go around flaming others for only having to pay $199 for our $599 phones. every thing is a trade off

Yay for forced data limits/throttle in the future. Vzw doesn't guarantee any "grandfathering". It says right in the contract they can change terms on you and it gives you a free out to go to other carriers. The whole –look at what I can do is quite childish. Whatever.
Heck I use 30gb at home on Cox between two computers and a ps3 and pay for 50gb

A guy over on the Rezound forums hit 1TB. I'm sitting at about 9GB this month.
And for the people bleating about this being why they did away with unlimited data--no. Just shut up. They did it out of pure greed. LTE is cheap, and for every person using 30gb there's 10 people using 500mb. Verizon might be losing money on some customers, but in the aggregate, they were still making money hand over fist, even with unlimited data. But they can make more with shared/tiered. Guess which they went with?
I'm normally around wifi except when I go workout so I rarely break 2gb. Even so I have no problems with data hogs. I've worked a number of years at an isp and I can tell you data hogs are not the problem unless if the network engineers are total idiots. A properly managed network will prevent heavy users from bogging down the network during peak usage.
But many of you guys buy right into the carrier's manufactured bandwidth crisis so they can justify charging $15 per gb.

It's a sad thought, but I think Verizon is really killing it for us Android/smart phone users. Their new tiered plans will start July 7 and the prices are ridiculous. (80$ for 10GB) (30$ for 2GB) and more, but It's not that I hate Verizon. I'm new to them, I've only been with them for 2 months, and I love the quality of service I get. Good thing is we all keep our unlimited data due to our contracts having been signed before July 7th.
But it's like Verizon is trying to kick out all the smart phone users with their already overpriced plans. Att isn't looking any better, but when I look at Sprint (which I left for Verizon) and their new LTE contract and unlimited data it looks like a haven for me.
Now I love my Thunderbolt and will stay with it for most likely half my contract (maybe the whole 2 years) then switch over to Sprint because I really don't want to pay that much for data, I always go above 10GB sadly, I hope Sprint stays unlimited until then, or I could hope for the impossible. That Verizon will stop being greedy. :/
What are your thoughts on this? Will you be sticking with the new plans when your contract is over? or will you switch over to a new carrier? (if so which carrier?) I felt like making a topic about this to read other people's thoughts on this.
I have little choice where I live. It's Verizon or crap signal. Sprint has zero coverage here. I despise Verizon's policies and outright greed. The price on data plans and tethering was shocking when we got these phones (first smart phones for us). I had read some where that their agreement with the FCC when they bought the 700mhz spectrum for LTE is going to cause problems for their tethering plans. It was something about being required to allow tethering on that spectrum.
Regardless, I'm not a heavy wireless bandwidth user, but it would be convenient to be able to link my laptop up when I'm out in the boonies and need to remote into work. And not get raped for $20 every time I need it.
I only signed a one year contract. I hope my rates don't change when its over. Looks like ill be buying all my phones cash to avoid a data plan upgrade.

Glad I got in when I did.
I don't use my data that much, or so I thought...but my bill every month is 6 to 8 GB. I know I can cut that back by downloading all the different ROMs and Kernals on my PC then moving them over...but man it sure is nice using LTE speeds to download 200 plus MB...
I'm not one to start rumors...only this discussion.
Anyone feel this might be a pre-cursor to an iPhone 5? I still don't believe it'll have LTE...

There are only a small handful of phones you can even buy and not be forced to use a data plan.
I would bet my money, if I were a gamblin' man, that when your contract is up...you will be forced to tiered data IF you get a new handset and sign a new contract.
If you're renewing a current unlimited data plan, you will keep your unlimited data. It will apply to new service contracts only.
I skated on unlimited data for 3 years after a 5 gig cap was placed on sprint's aircards because I kept renewing my original contract.
Now, once you let your contract lapse, without renewing it, you will be subject to changes with your service when you do sign back up.

I don't get where people think verizon is so expensive. Compaired to other carriers vzw is not that much more expensive, and even cheaper in some scenarios. Now boost mobile or cricket may be cheaper but that's like walking into a cadillac dealer and *****ing that the cts-v you're looking at is more then the 1998 Taurus you seen down the street. If you want to deal with sprints ****ty service go with them... I'm sure Walmart has some cheap prepay options too. You are paying for a service, you get what you pay for. You pay 29.99 for unlimited 4g data on your phone and ***** because they want to charge you if you choose to enable a different data service on your phone? So you think for the meisly 30 bucks a month you should be able to use 100gbs of bandwith tethering your pc and seeding 50 torrents? All they want is another 29.99 to tether, and guess what, that's unlimited too! On top of that they gave it to you for free for three months for buying your phone.. I can't wait for teired data. And another FYI, Verizon currently does not charge to use mobile hotspot on their tabs, guess why? Because you pay for teired data, they actually don't care how you you ur data, you bought it! Who needs to use 10 gigs of data on their phone a month? I use my phone constantly for work and play, stream Pandora for hours, and have never hit five gigs... Download all your firmware on ur home WiFi network if you want to download straight to Ur phone, or use Ur data cable ( they gave that to you for free too ) home WiFi not fast enough? Drop it and get Ur 29.99 tethering plan, bet that's cheaper then what Ur paying Ur isp now

If it wasn't going to cost more than my phone's value each month in data charges, you might be right. However, for those of us who actually use the phone for work or anything else with high data usage, the new changes are ridiculous.
If they don't grandfather users, I'll be dropping my family plan. I already pay $250/mo for 5 lines - mine is the only one with high usage (data/voice/txting) due to work.
So in April when i picked up my G2X i decided to go to the local Tmobile store to get my phone because i didnt want to wait for shipping and for once decided to save a few bucks and get the contract extension rather than pay outright.
when there setting everything up I was told I needed a new sim card for 4G.
I thought that was odd because I was already given a "new" 4G sim for that reason on my nexus one.
I specifically told the clerk i did NOT want the new 5GB plan because of the data throttling and wanted to keep my old plan. he said no problem.
I have since found out the hard way I am now on the 5GB plan and constantly get the throttle text message and its pissing me off.
Ive tried calling Tmobile and I always end up with someone who barely speaks English and doesn't understand what my problem is.
I explain i want my old plan and not to be data throttled and they read from a script explaining it doesnt cut off my internet or charge me extra.
has anyone dealt with this and succesfully got the old plan back?
even with constantly being on WIFI when its available ( and killing my battery )
i go over 5gb and it sucks.
Everybody got switched to 5GB, I don't think anybody wanted it either. You can't get unthrottled data plans anymore. The only thing you could do is "upgrade" to the 10GB plan.

Well that blows, i was under the impression if you dont change your plan they are obligated to give you the service you've always had.
I havent checked the 10GB price but considering what I am paying now I doubt I will be willing to pay it.
it sucks paying more money for lesser service.
so far in the last few months I feel like Tmobile, My bank, insurance & Sirius have all bent me over & screwed me without dinner or a thank you....
Just curious, how long have you had unthrottled data? I got switched to the 5GB plan back in October of last year.

How it was explained to me, T-Mobile always had the 5 gb limit. They just didn't enforce it automatically like they do now. It was hidden away in the fine print way back that 5 gb was the limit for high speed data, they just had no way of actually throttling til they got the 4g network up and running. So we are screwed. I can't even upgrade to the 10gb plan since I'm on and old myfavs family plan so its not an option for me.

AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L
With mobile data usage continuing to skyrocket and the availability of spectrum scarce, AT&T, like other wireless companies, manages its network in the most fair way possible so that we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience for all our customers.
How we’re managing the network only affects a small minority of the heaviest smartphone data users still on unlimited plans. Put another way, this does not impact more than 95 percent of our smartphone customers.
Our unlimited plan customers have told us they want more clarity around how the program works and what they can expect. Here’s what customers need to know:
Customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – will see speeds reduced if they use 3GB (gigabytes) of data or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle. For context, less than 5 percent of smartphone customers use more than 3GB per month.
For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle
Click to collapse
Customers will get a text message from us before experiencing a change in speed.
Even with reduced data speeds, these customers will still be able to email and surf the web, and continue to use an unlimited amount of data each month.
Not impacted by this program, launched last year, are customers on our tiered data plans.
The reason reduced speeds only apply to unlimited smartphone customers is because their data usage is significantly higher than those on tiered plans. For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans.
Because spectrum is limited and data usage continues to soar, we manage our network this way to be as fair as possible and so we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience to everyone.
We encourage all of our customers to use Wi-Fi whenever possible – especially when watching video, which is the most data-intensive activity.
That’s because data activity over Wi-Fi does not count against the threshold for unlimited customers that triggers reduced data speeds or against customers’ tiered data plans. Customers can find out more at www.att.com/datainfo
But some people were getting throttled even when they didn't go over 3gb. I believe they shouldn't throttle for the whole billing cycle. Only when someone is abusing it when there's a lot of traffic in the network, and restore it after that period. But that would probably require a lot of work. I dunno just my opinion.
Never been throttled, I don't use a lot of data.

Maybe a better way to "CLARIFY" is to change the Plan name from UNlimited to " LIMITED "
That would clear it all up would'nt it?

And does anyone know if this 3GB cap just started?
Because this month I got throttled at 2040mb ... which is... roughly.. 2GB.. right.
I think 5GB sounds fair for an "unlimited" (limited) plan.
I would never go over that!... 3GB... I hover around that every month for sure.

No. Lol. There's a flaw where if you had the original iphone then you could set it up in iTunes and get unlimited data.
In two days, at the beginning of a cycle, when I was on my 2 gig planned (had just got the phone a month or two before..) It decided to go through the roof with my usage. 2 gigs. 2 days...

So you do have a service agreement. A contract. I can guarantee that if you've gotten a subsidized phone from them since your iPhone that you either signed or clicked through a new contract binding you to updated agreements but keeping your unlimited plan.

Here's the deal. Less than 5% of AT&T users have unlimited data. They want the unlimited people gone. They are trying to monetize power-users while managing bandwidth (which is a finite resource) to keep the average users happy. If you had a business and had to choose between keeping 5% of your customers happy, or 95% of your customers happy... you would make the same choice. These decisions aren't about the users today... it's about 2015 when the average smartphone user will use alot more data... and there will be more smartphone users.... etc, etc.
Not saying I condone these decisions... but after all they are a business. They have a finite resource (bandwidth) and have to make as much profit as possible with that finite resource. Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees, and neither does money. End of story.
Well my sister used her upgrade today, and switched to the share everything plan after the guy told her we were using under 4gb a month. Lies? I've been consistently using 20gb+ a month.
Something sketchy is going on. It was good while it lasted, I guess.

Yup I switched to it (share everything) eliminated my unlimited data plan I think share everything was a ploy to get rid of all the grandfather unlimited data users

I switched too. We aren't heavy data users and the bill was dropped 10 bucks.

I GOT THE UNLIMITED BACK!
My mother got very pissed when the verizon guy said she's going to have $150 in overages due to my data usage this month so far. That didn't fly, and needless to say, the guy changed it back very quickly
So there is hope if you call to change it back quickly.

I consistently use around 500MB a month, how do you use 20GB?
Seriously though, of course it was a ploy to get rid of the grandfathered plans, to a degree. Considering ATT said at one time that most people use less than 2GB of data and Verizon's site suggests that most people use between 1-3GB of data, I don't see what the problem is allowing those on unlimited data plans to remain so. Thankfully, I have WiFi.

I use about 15-20gigs a month on Netflix, and for tethering when I'm at work to play online games on my laptop, and to update and download steam games as I only have a 1.5 connection at home vs a 30Mbps for 4g

For some there are. When we came back to Verizon from Sprint we piggy backed off of my in laws business plan. Him switching to share everything dropped his account by $150 and that is AFTER adding our 3 lines. I just use WiFi when I'm home, our home internet is unlimited through our local telephone company.

Well, I have a 10Gb limit / week at college, so all of my big downloads go onto the data plan. This month I downloaded autocad inventor 2013 for giggles. But at work I am constantly using google drive to transfer photos from my phone to use in my work place. I'm taking about 100-200 pictures a day of various tests. It is just easier to transfer them that way than pulling out the usb drive and fussing with drivers on corporate computers.
Yeah i didnt have $600 to pay for the phone to keep my unlimited plan. So i got pushed onto the 2gb plan last week when i upgraded the phone. Is there any way I can get unlimited back?? I really want to use this phone a lot more then i did my old dinc. It sucks the 2gb limit is going to **** me over. How did you get it back. I really want it back!

Lesson learned, don't take free upgrades.... you don't need the latest greatest phone for cheaper more than you need a lower bill. Wait a few months then buy one in the xda classifieds when the next greatest phone comes out. Tons of people will be clamouring to trade or sell there three month old phone. Then they can get enough money so there one week paycheck plus what ever they sell there phone for will give them enough to purchase the galaxy s4.
It happens in cycles here, I bought a galaxy nexus for 250 on eBay like new for Verizon about a month ago. When this phone first came out it was going for close to 600 or more in the forums. Grant it, it is getting older but the tech really is not improving much. Unless you think a quad core will make a difference playing angry birds?
I will never willingly give up my unlimited data for the next best device. I may be behind, but guess what I'm streaming data over 4g in my house that has an unlimited Wi-Fi connection already, and i don't care.

Honestly,
Firstly, verizon has a pretty great network.
I came from ATT and I can attest to the problems they have with data. Being that I lived in Las Vegas, a highly urbanized center with over a million people, and actually one of the very first 3g networks in the country, a place that should (that is SHOULD) have a massive infrastructure, I can tell you that ATT has huge issues in terms of network reliability and consistency.
So now it comes to Verizon and their network. Seeing as they have invested a massive amount into building a pretty good 4G LTE network, and that they honestly do provide great service, is it too much to ask them to want to make a profit? Probably not.
Do not get me wrong, I am not in any way saying that they do not make enough money. My recent arguments with them that led me to nearly leave them should prove that. I managed to get my way, but that way actually involved me having to also give up my unlimited data plan.
What are you doing each month that requires 20gb of data. I would wager that a lot of that usage would be mobile hotspot, or using your phone in a rather unconventional manner.
So now the question is whether it is reasonable to expect you as the end user to use their product as they would imagine you should. You are not racking up 20 gigabytes of usage being an average user, are you?
So then they come out with tiered plans.
Guess what, you choose what fits your needs, and make concessions. We all do this every day. You do not NEED to have a car that goes 250 mph, you may purchase one, and you pay a huge premium for that.
Back to the point here.
For years and years, we in the united states had silver spoons in our mouths in terms of mobile data. It was always unlimited. The minutes and text messages cost us money, and the phone companies could not really monetize data, or they just did not want to until they noticed that they were losing calling minutes and text messages to apps that would do the same things.
Now they want to charge for the services they provide.
And people suddenly have an ISSUE with this?
Do you pay a flat rate for all you can consume water?
Or heating oil, natural gas or whatever else you use to keep warm in the winter?
Does Shell or Exxon sell you an all you can eat plan for gasoline?
Does water flow free, as much as you can use, forever and ever?
Data is more like a utility than ever, and in the coming years, decades, etc the world and commerce will be largely measured in access to data and services.
Just deal with it, and learn to connect to wifi, or do whatever else you need to do without sucking bandwidth and then complaining when they want to make you know... money off of you for using THEIR services.
So can i still cancle the phone upgrade and go back to the dinc? And will that lead to getting my old plan back? Ive only had the phone for week.

I understand but don't agree with AT&T's throttle policy. But this is just ridiculous (see screenshot below).
.01 Mbps!!! Ridiculous... speeds this slow make my phone practically unusable!! And this is "unlimited" data... haha.
I know there is nothing I can do except grind my teeth and take it or go elsewhere.. I hope AT&T loses a lot of business because of this.
I understand throttling to an extent... but to throttle at 3gb with technology today. HD videos, Netflix, YouTube, internet radio, posting pictures with the phones 8mp camera.. of course data usage is getting bigger and limits are getting smaller.
I don't go far over 3gb, its hard to with these speeds.. but its normally the last week of the month that I get throttled. So I would most likely use 4gb, maybe 5gb. I read that 4g phone plans have a 5gb limit... and honestly I thought the Infuse was a "4g" phone... any way for an enormous and very profitable company to stick it to the little guys.
I also noticed that I get throttled at different usage. I use data monitor to track my usage and I've been throttled as low as roughly 2.5gb and at max I'll get to maybe 4gb.
Does anyone know how exactly we are throttled? It can't be automatic if it varies this much, can it? I imagine some well paid old man in a suit counting his stack of money, laughing and randomly hitting a big throttle button. Haha.
I apologize for a semi useless post and ranting away.. it's just been one of those days and needed to blow some steam.
Thank you for listening and everyone who contributes to this forum.
Now I'll sit here while I wait for this post and screenshot to upload on my ATT throttled BS. I wonder if a dial up connection would be faster.. haha. Do they still have dial up internet available? Remember all those AOL CDs? Haha.. sorry... I'm done...

I feel your pain, but from a different direction.
We only have the 200MB per month AT&T plan for each of our 5 Infuse phones and don't go over that.
Most of our internet activities occur at home where we use our Wifi router.
But that single Wifi router feeds up to 5 phones, a pc, and three laptops.
After somewhere around 5GB in a month and our ISP (Clear) starts throttling us slower.
It definitely kills the experience when you can't watch a video from start to finish without waiting for it to buffer a few times.
Unlimited Text, Talk, and Data, only $45/mo: Prepaid Straight Talk SIM Port your number over, and tell ATT to go fornicate themselves.
I am rated at 7.2mbit up to 360mb. I will grab another test once I'm throttled. This is o2 in Munich Germany. They say throttled speed is 64k. We will see.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
I feel for you, but at the same time all carriers are doing this or will be doing it in the near future.
If you look at the current growth of mobile data usage and consider the spectrum they have to work with it's not sustainable. You can only fit so much information in a certain amount of bandwidth.
I am almost always near wifi, so my monthly data usage rarely excedes 200-300 mb. I'm on the 2gb plan but have never even used half of it.
Personally I wish companies would charge for what you actually use. (at a reasonable rate of course)
That will never happen, because they can't do the legal gymnastics to call it "unlimited" and they would scare off the early adopter and trendsetter types.
I left AT&T for Straight talk and left my 400 Meg twice as expensive plan behind for unlimited talk, text and data and now happily tether my Thrive Tablet to my phone on the back woods farm of my grandparents in Kentucky for Christmas where AT&T couldn't even connect! :good:
The thing you are forgetting is Straight Talk isn't true unlimited either. I have them and I'm talking from experience. I've gotten lucky and used almost 5gb and not been throttled but they are getting worse about it lately. I only used 1.6GB this month and they throttled me. There is no rhyme or reason to how they do it but they do it. 2GB and less you are usually fine on ST but if you goto howardforums.com and goto the Straight Talk section they have a thread on the throttling. Some people use 4-5GB and have no issues but some use a bit over 1GB and get throttled. It's honestly still WELL worth the cost because to even get CLOSE to this on AT&T for a single line will be around $110 a month.
I have 3 GB data plan and I think that's enough for me
If you are on single person plan, I also think that straight talk will be better choice for you
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
I hate the fact that they make you have a data plan with any smart phone. But their new family share plan helps a lot.
Going to look into Straight Talk, thx

Throttling never makes sense just like the family share plan it's an excuse to get more money. I got fed up with ATT and left for t mobile. The plans are cheaper and I get true unlimited. With a rooted phone I tether and sure it's not true Lte but I still average 8-10 Mbps and that's perfect for me.

Maybe I don't know will enough about AT&T, but I believe you party same amount of money even you are under contract or not right?
Then all you need to pay is phone cost. There are some good phones with LTE and under $100.
Or you have choice of straight talk which gives you pretty good amount of data with super cheap cost.

tmobile is true unlimited. also has month to month plan no contract. i'm gonna switch over soon when my contract is done with att...
Just wanted to chime in for a second. I had Straight Talk on my Infuse 4G for almost a year and while the service is pretty decent, I noticed that in a crowded AT&T cell I get kicked off. Also, I notice that (very rarely) in some places I don't have access to 3G service whereas other people with contract AT&T do (might be a modem thing, though, not 100% sure). There is supposedly an unspoken limit of 2GB of data per month (and some say even 100MB per day at most), but I have been careful to stay under both of those limits, the maximum I have used in a month on ST was 1.4GB.
Now I'm back on AT&T with 6GB Mobile Data Share and 2 lines (our Skyrocket i727s) and I have to say that the service is more consistent than I had on my time with straight talk (I've witnessed at shopping centers and malls I got kicked off of the data network more than a few times in favor of AT&T customers due to crowded cells), that and the LTE is great and the Skyrocket is just an all around awesome phone. I know the i727 is long in the tooth, but $.97 for a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S3, 1GB of RAM, LTE and that great 8MP camera is too hard to pass up. If you're broke like I was, it's a good deal.
Just my two cents. I know AT&T is a PITA but it could always be worse...you could be stuck on Sprint paying for 4G in an area with no 4G like I used to, lol.
