LTE data usage and you - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I'm thinking of making the switch over to Att because of sprint's lack luster speeds and I was wondering if anyone is having issues staying under the data cap? I currently have unlimited data but I don't use my phone much anymore because i am usually either roaming or having sub 150k speeds.
Thoughts?

The 2gb datapro plan is a good amount of data if you dont use netflix or slingplayer. You can use youtube but not too much. I recommend just getting a used ebay tmobile phone and using it with walmarts tmobile cheapo $50 plan. Then root the phone to remove the "4g" throttle. Or get the $30 walmart plan if you use less then 100 minutes or only use voip apps.

I'm 20 days into my first real billing month and have used only 546MB of my 2GB plan. At home and at work I have wifi, so my only data usage would be on the road. My significant data usage comes from streaming music on my way to work and going back home. That's about 45 minutes total, maybe a few minutes less sometimes, of constant streaming. I don't run any updates or download/install apps while out on the road. I also do some browsing and streaming music during the weekend too while I'm out of the house. I don't think I will reach 1GB this month...

What has you average been on sprint? You can see it online in billing. I have been on art since august after years with sprint and the difference was night and day. I use a ton of data though so I was fortunate that one of the existing lines on the family plan I joined had unlimited data

That's the only thing I'm worried about. I usually average between 1.5 and 2.5 gigs a month but that's on sprint's crappy ass network where I can watch YouTube so that's basically all fb, internet browsing, picture uploads and misc stuff.

My average is about 4gb a month. I am a heavy user (not an abuser) but I do try and use wifi when available. If I were to solely use the network I would come in somewhere around 15-20gb per month.
Keep in mind...going over just means they charge you $10 and give you another gb ...it isn't the end of the world and you have access to your usage at all times thus you can adjust if need be

Im using the 4gb/month and never get anywhere near it.. but I do have a wireless router at the house for my "hot spots"

I'll probably just bite the bullet and grab the 4gb with hotspot. I don't Netflix or sling box at work so that will save plenty of data right there.

I like your Username...... "1488" part for sure

i was in the same situation. sprint customer for over 10 years. tired of crappy speeds. my usage was between 2 and 3 gigs.thats pandora, youtube, facebook and general surfing. i switched and cant believe i waited so long. i am on the 2gb datapro and thats fine as long as i use my wifi at home. i dont try to limit the use, i will just pay the $10 overage if i have to. at least i can watch a youtube clip without buffering every 5 seconds.

Although I have an unlimited plan, I follow my data usage. For a typical billing period, I use something between 3 and 4 GB of data. I am a moderate user, mostly checking the web and email and hardly any streaming.

Make yhd switch you wont regret it. Internet on hspa+ or Lte is blazing fast compared to sprint. Had sprint since 07 left about 2 months ago. Last month my usage was 1.4 Gb. Normal internet usage really doesn't use that much data. And being unlimited is kind of overrated when your speeds stink.

Dang... you guys use hardly any data.
I have unlimited data on a network that CAN handle heavy data easily, and I take advantage of that.
4 days in, 700MB used.
At this rate, it'll be about 3GB.... wow.
I though it'd be more then that, I'm actually trying to get throttled for a test...... time to download the entire Adobe Master CS5 collection on LTE.

Yup, increase coverage and speeds, lower the data cap in half, and use up your data in half the time! I think if I did the math right, I can cap out 5gigs in about 9hours of watching netflix via my playon app alone; which is about 20min a day for a given 30 day month. They should of kept the 10gig at least, considering EVERYTHING this phone does practically uses the internet.
Wow, I didn't know they did that. I thought I used mine a lot, but I just checked and I only use about 500-600 MB a month, lol

Yep, my wife and I have both been throttled and have unlimited. I hate TMO and can't wait to go to Sprint for real unlimited.
I never get close to this.. dont you have real internet, like 99.9% of the world, I believe even remote parts of Africa have internet.. you really dont need to tether your phone for everything.
wow wtf are you guys doing with your phones? tethering to your PC and broadcasting 1080p video on ustream?? My next billing cycle starts in 5 days and I've only used 250mb (I'm in a 4G area). I use my data A LOT too - youtube, surfing the web, market downloads, facebook, twitter, etc. I use an app called Line2 for my incoming/outgoing calls and text msgs which relys on my data and I still don't get close to 1GB.
I will tell you how I consume 5GB quickly.
I am an independent IT consultant where my clients don't allow access to their network with my machine. Therefore, I am tethered 12hrs every business day. Syncing a 3gb IMAP mailbox all day is a lot of data alone!
I consume 1GB every 3 working days.

Then you should have the common sense to have a better internet solution than tethering.
I've never run into the data cap, not because I don't use my data, but because I'm actually wise about it and don't carelessly burn bandwidth. Use Wifi when available, don't try to consume as much data as you can.

Hey, we have no data limits at sprint..
Except you'll be lucky to see more than 300 kbps in most areas during the day with 3g, and ~2-5 Mbps on 4g. We have people in the evo forum *****ing about the extremely slow network, ready to jump ship to vz or elsewhere.
I've come to the conclusion there is no ideal solution. Each provider is a compromise of different elements such as price, service, data, features, etc.
Common Sense? I was answering a question as to how one can get the to 5gb limit, period.
Common sense says Tmobile should have told me about the 5gb threshold when I agreed to a contract, and fine print is not acceptable.

Common Sense? You are expecting a Corporation sales person to be honest with you? They are interested in one thing and that is selling a product. They don't care if you get screwed in the end. They will just take your $200 ETF when you find out how much they lied to you... Well didn't disclose the TRUTH to you and you move on to the next corporation that does it to you in another way. That's what business has come to in America.
A warning would have been nice around 4gigs. TBH, if you say you use the web all the time and only have 4-500megs usage your lying. My biggest data drain went into streaming TV and music from my home server. I was unaware t-mobile even had a limit until i got the message saying I was cut off, because when i had my BB i would usually only average about 20megs a month usage. Hell, I ALMOST went with a 200meg connection, but didn't want to feel restricted so I went with unlimited.
These phones are beast, as they should be with a 4+meg connection! It just doesn't seem fair to offer us all these gadgets and offer us their TV packages and crap then take it away just barely into the month because we actually use what they advertised to sell the product!

On average my apps have been between 2-3megs each...
So at ~87 custom apps, that I have actually kept and not just downloaded to try, at 2.5megs each that's 217.5megs; a total which almost meets your usage so far alone.
Well, I'm in my first month with TMO and already got my 5GB notice. Isn't it nice. I get a ripping 20 KB/SEC on my best download but, usually around 10 to 12KB/SEC on AMERICAS LARGEST 4G NETWORK. That happened right in the middle of a SW update and their CRAPPY network could not even handle a text message and the download at the same time. They cut me down to 5KB/SEC and it took close to 2 hrs to DL 50MB. What a deal they are giving us. The big problem is the only company that I have ever been happy with is no longer doing business in my area. Lots to look forward to.

Is this really unlimited data?

I know its advertised as unlimited data but a lot of them have that fictional cap etc. Reason im asking is my T-Bolt is upwards of 10gb used this month with 8 days left in the cycle haha. I havent even tethered really. I used 1gb a month on my AT&T iPhone, and 10 times more on this. Just dont want them throttling me or something.
Thanks

My guess is id have to go much higher than 10gb for them to throttle. Plus im probably not really that high compared to a lot of people. Most people are really beating up LTE because its the newest thing. Its sickeningly fast!!
As far as I recall, in the contract's TOS they stipulate 5GB or more per month is considered evidence that you are using the phone to do things that are in violation of the TOS (such as hosting a website on your phone, running a public FTP server, etc.).
So while the connection it officially unlimited, there are activities that are considered violations of the service agreement, and 5GB per month is the sniff test.
I'd wager that in practice you have to go well beyond this before anything happens, especially if packet inspection shows you're reaching such high amounts through acceptable usage (e.g. non-stop pandora). I'd also wager that if anything were to happen, rather than cancel your agreement they would just speed cap you for a certain time.

That's been gone for a couple years. The only thing they have in there now is that the top 5% may be throttled.
Verizon throttle's the top 5% data users. Someone on here said they used 100GB in a week though (not too sure about that) so you're probably under that top 5%.
In the fine print unlimited data is 5gb with a 10$ overage per gb. Or that's what it used to be. This isn't including WiFi data that's free .

You got it. I just read the contract terms. From the very bottom of the agreement:
Verizon Wireless strives to provide customers the best experience when using our network, a shared resource among tens of millions of customers. To help achieve this, if you use an extraordinary amount of data and fall within the top 5% of Verizon Wireless data users we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand. Our proactive management of the Verizon Wireless network is designed to ensure that the remaining 95% of data customers aren't negatively affected by the inordinate data consumption of just a few users.

Isn't that top 5% from all users users (even dumb-phones)? If so the bar is set extremely low.
It says top data users, which at face value sounds to exclude dumb phone and include those with tether plans.

Easy, watch a baseball game or two on your phone and see how much data you just used. You would be surprised how easy it is to eat up data I usually go through a few GB to watch a full basketball game stream or something similar (which is the whole point of LTE because we now have proper speed to do such things just as we would on a desktop computer).

I done some light tethering. Mostly stuff on the phone. Pandora, speed tests, browsing, facebook, etc. 4g data is insane.
The pricing structure definitely needs to be changed for 4g data. 2-5gb would be insane.
I think the T-bolt is using more data than other phones for some reason. I used to barely hit 500mb on my Incredible in a month, and I am at almost 3GB this month on my T-bolt. It is connected to WiFi at home and at work, so I am only on LTE when I am commuting or otherwise away from home which isn't that often. I would say at most 1gb of that has been downloading ROMs, but otherwise I can't explain it. I haven't tethered at all other than once or twice to make sure it worked.
I actually have a LTE USB modem as well that I connect to a Cradlepoint router in my office which is what my T-bolt is connected to all day long at work along with my iPad. It hardly shows any data use, though. I am only up to about 1.2GB for this month, and that is mostly because I watched a couple of shows on Hulu on my iPad.
I've used 7GB so far, 21 days into my billing cycle. I have watched maybe 10 two-minute youtube videos, used xda app, wordfeud, downloaded some driver files for my laptop, facebook... no streaming hulu or netflix or anything. it does seem excessive, because i used to use 5GB max per month on sprint. then again their wimax and 3g are both awful and practically unusable. maybe my several dozen speedtests have contributed to the usage... hrmm

[Q] 2gb Data Plan

My contract recently expired and I am looking to upgrade. My question is, is the 2gb Data plan enough to support the Infuse, Atrix, or Inspire? I have read the other thread on this question, however all the responses were about getting unlimited data. I would get it but, being in school, i cant justify/afford the cost of buying an iPhone 2g. I have been looking for a fellow friend or developer in my area to lend me theirs but I am looking to get the new phone in a week or two.
So, in general, is the 2gb plan enough?
My day during the year, 8-3, classes, no major usage, mabey 30 mins internet.
4-10 moderate usage, mabey up to 1 hour usage. Internet, mabey an app or two, and possible Pandora a day or two a month. Tethering mabey 20 mins max 3 days a week or less. weekends, moderate usage, internet sparingly all day, mabey 1:00 max. Summer is similar to weekends.
What is the general opinion? Or personal experience.
I live in Florida and used Pandora a good amount of time during my drive to N Carolina and back as well as my Google Maps, and didn't get anywhere near the 2gb. I'm on my phone most of the day at work (730-4) and use the browser, Facebook app, and various other data using apps. The only problem you might run into is the tethering imo.

Totally enough, even with your usage. I have the same plan and I am a pretty heavy user day to day, I read xda for about 3 hours a day maybe watch like 4 YouTube vids, engadget app, Facebook, stream Pandora for like an hour... and yet the past 3 months I can only get up to using about 1. 5 Gigs.... trust me its enough

Mr.Nun.Ya
it is enough, i use my phone all day and when i get the bill, its nowhere near 2gb.
Unlimited plans make you feel warm and fussy because you always know you won't go over. If you are aware of how you use the internet you will be fine. Me, I turn off my mobile network religiously it save massive battery life and all the apps that want to update can't. (if its in my pocket I don't care about someones facebook update) Second I use WiFi when I can: its free, normal much faster, I do not have 4g but I do have a 10m connection at home and a larger one @ the university I work at.
If you every want to check how much data you have used use this number and it will show you your data usage; *3283#
If you check that once a week you will never go over, or you can use an app like 3g Watchdog Pro(or lite) which is absolutely amazing...it shows you how much dat\ you used that day/week/month...it predicts how much you will use by the date you will be billed based on your current usage, calculates how much data you can use a day for the whole month without going over, it is a very nice app/widget to have
2gb DAta Plan
I constantly go over and I have 4gb, but I also am traveling and tether. Since I never had AT&T until now I was told I am not able to get unlimited which I think is stupid.
That's crap if I had a cap with att I would move to Verizon they have. no cap and the thunderbolt I don't no why you guys think it alright you probably think its OK to pay extra to tether how I use my data is my business its just a way to squeese more money from you
Mr.Nun.Ya
I also have the 2gig data plan, I have not came close to my limit at all. I am on my phone all the time, at least my wife says. The close I came to was 1 gig, that was re-downloading all of my google apps, before I swtich over to my WIfi.
I never use Wifi- because my broadband connection is slower than my ATT connection on the phone. Ihave an older unlimited data plan, and I use 7-8G in a typical month.
Verizon
I was told and have read on several websites that Verizon will be dropping the unlimited data plans and adopting a tiered system like AT&T. If you have your unlimited with AT&T right now, find a 3g smartphone that is acceptable and keep your unlimited. I made the mistake of not doing that and regret it. I do however really like my Inspire.

I've had the Charge since day 1, transitioning from one rom to another and finally aquired 4g back on the 20th of Oct. Since then I've managed to use 114GB of data and my bill cycle ended on the 25th of this month. Just wondering if anybody has managed to use this much data in a months time and if verizon is trying to charge extra for going over 100GB?

You are definitely going to have your account reviewed. That much data usage in a month is nearly impossible on a phone, so they will try to determine if you are tethering.
holy gigabytes batman! I've used less than 200 MB over the past 3 months combined.
Most ive hit was 40GB and nothing happened. 100 is WAY to much for just roms bro, you got to be doing some tethering.
I know I do, thats how I hit 40GB and thats streaming HQ content.
Holy Data Usage Batman! (Sorry, I had to say that LOL)
I barely use 2 GB a month, only once did I reach 2.5 GBs. And that's with streaming music in the car and occasional web browsing.
I hate to say this but people like you, using 100 GBs, is why Verizon got rid of the Unlimited Data plans.
My data abuse record is 50 gb, and that was torrenting almost every night.

I myself average 10-15gb a month, not tethering. I stream Netflix during my lunch breaks though too. Still, most people sound like they are averaging far more than the current cap in place. I don't know what I'm going to do when they start phasing out the grandfathered in people.
Wow, well now I know who all to blame when everyone on Verizon gets pushed into the tiered data plan.
I use my phone for a lot of stuff that uses data. I even tether but only when I'm not around an internet source. I stay below 2 to 2.5GB every month.
Ya I'm definitely not trying to be a data hog but I do download alot of bluray movies off torrents (5-7gb a pop) and Rage the game was 18Gb by itself. I usually only use about 40 but somehow I got carried away this month. 4g I definitely worth it

Most they'll probably do is throttle you (at this point its safe to assume you are in the top 5% data users if not the #1) to 3G speeds or lower. Now if you do it multiple times, then I'd be worrying
Just buy the tether plan if you are using that much IMO. It is still saving you money in the long run over a high speed home connection and it would alleviate the worry of getting forced into tiered data by Verizon.
Meh, I've seen a bill over 425GB.
I'm thinking the top 5% throttling mechanism will keep the network stable enough to keep us on our grandfathered plans. I'd hate to be wrong, I average 6 or 7GBs or so myself.
Verizon seems to be great at coming up with ways to keep the network bandwidth usage in check:
1. Network Optimization- http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/data_disclosure.html
2. Top 5% Throttling - http://www.intomobile.com/2011/09/19/verizon-starts-throttling-top-5-data-users/
3. Turbo API - http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/2/2...er-data-turbo-api-to-developers-fees-to-users
4. ??
5. Profit!
The most I used in 1 month was 15gb. That was watching a lot of Netflix. I probable average 4gb most months.

One of my friends bought into tethering and he previously had the unlimited data. They told him he had to give up unlimited if he paid for tethering. I don't know why but he STILL PAID FOR IT!
I don't understand the idea of:
"Hey...I want to give you *more* money, and you want to give me less features??"

unlimited data, but not. 3.5GB o2 uk (cell net)

Not too pleased about a text saying im using too much data on an unlimited data plan. 3.5GB Used in about 3 week or so isnt tht bad considering todays phone features and my speeds of 1Mb up and down load bandwidth. Any way through or around this fair use policy thing? I want to keep enjoying my new galaxy s3.

3.5GB in 3 weeks is top-tier data usage. You'll be able to find language about it in your contract.
As for getting around it. No dice. You signed the contract agreeing to (however they're laid out) the terms which allow them to throttle/cut you off if you're using a lot.
It's possible, too, that your primary data usage location is on a particularly congested section of backhaul, which will cause problems.
♡true unlimited data♡
Gutted. Ive seen people talk about sprint... an american network provider i take it... and they dont cap your data use. Is this true and are there any such providers in the uk?
3.5GB in 3 weeks >> omg its damn high n
2.13GB of it is youtube... as you do... then googling and googlemaps/satnav are the other big uses. Ive ate through it realy easy.
Thing is i do use my wifi. 14.3 GB worth in the same time frame. Youtube and online fps.
Unlimited Data does not mean it's completely Unlimited, there is a cap of either 1GB, 3GB, 5GB as such and if you go over that limit they will slow down your speeds. Yes, there is Unlimited Browsing, but that's just for surfing. How you used up 3.5GB in 3 weeks is beyond me and absurd!
Mobile Data browsing is for surfing not be used as a replacement Wifi.

I use my wifi when possible. Thts about 13GB in the 3 week.
As you are a heavy user, consider moving to Three when your contract is up. They do all you can eat data packages.

This plan has your name written all over it lol

Wow man! 3 gb in 3 weeks, Next time, buy unlocked then buy a sim card.
1GB a month seems reasonable. Get a life outside your phones screen. There is a whole world out there. I bet you're one of those people who cross the street while texting.
It's easy enough to consume large amounts of data on a monthly basis just because OP has used 3.5gb doesn't mean he hasn't got a life.
I consume loads of data as I stream my music to and from work, Spotify makes up most my data usage. Watch videos at work when on my breaks now and then via YouTube.
Anyway to answer your question, Three provide unlimited data and GiffGaff also. Three are good but depends if signal is good in your area.
If your in a contract then nothing you can do and do not continue to exceed the usage, you'll either get charged for it or lead to a ban.

He does have wifi see post 5. :good:
Really people are still using the old "use more wifi" bullcrap!?! How about phone companies stop spewing crap about "unlimited data" when its not really. Who are they to tell me that I cant use a service that I pay for as I damn well please.
Why should I need home wifi when Im paying 90 bucks a month for my cell service and I use my phone as its meant to be, a mini convenient replacement for my computer.
Its all about technology and cell providers need to catch up instead of slowing us down.

Sprint user here, yeah. 1GB of data was gone in a few days & hell, that was just the phone doing background syncing & photo uploads.
Gotta love unlimited data.

Haha. That is funny. I consistently use upwards of fifteen gigabytes a month. This is with going out with friends everynight, bmxing, designing and writing, and other lifey stuff. Technology is meant to intergrate with your life; not to take you away from it.

All depends on the tarriff and the language of the contract.
From personal experience, I agree with the others. 3 is probably the best network for you if you honestly don't want danger of throttling / warnings and are prepared to pay the price.
Long story short - due to the ASA bringing in new guidance, people can't say unlimited and then limit you in any volume related way without making that clear in terms and offer description.
